Which do you use and why?
I think I would like a butt seat.....however I'm wary of not having a fishing seat for my back towards the end of the day.
Anyone with back issues use the butt seat?
Not a cheap expense.......but I don't know when that has stopped me before.
I had to quit using my butt seat because of my knees. Both are bad and one has had surgery and the other needs it. It was different learning to cast sitting instead of standing and I just can't flip at all sitting.
Butt seat at the trolling motor, full seat in the back.
I like the butt seat
I have back issues and cannot stand for long periods. I need the back support of a full seat when I sit down.
No seat, I need to move around a lot because of my back.
At my age I have to rest my back from time to time. Luckily, I am tall and long legged, so I have mounted a regular boat seat atop two standard pedestals. It's almost like standing, but I get the full pack support.
I'm in with the rest of the oldfarts, while I like the butt seat, my back likes the sit down fishing seat and my back wins everytime. My deck is large enough I can stand and have plenty of room when working a spinner bait in close cover, flipping, or pitching but doing those things are not for long intervals. It's not long before I have to plant my butt back in the seat.
I prefer a butt seat because it offers more room to move around. I don't have back issues so I can't comment on that, but I'd suggest to run your butt seat up front and a regular fishing seat in the back. If you need the back support at some point that day, you can swap them out if need be. Besides, you can pick up a but seat pretty cheap so it's not a huge cost.
I use a butt seat. Use it like a leaning post and it doesnt get in the way of casting/setting hooks. It usually doesnt get put on deck untill I feel like I could us a little break.
I use a butt seat that has a concave back, just raise it a little higher and it supports your lumbar when leaning.
Butt seat when its rough otherwise I stand we usually both fish the front and its just one more thing to work around

Hey! I resemble that remark!
Plus, I have an offset seat post that moves the seat back some to give me more room when I do stand.
I prefer a butt seat to a chair on the front deck. An exception to this rule would be if I was somewhere like Taneycomo, where you are doing a lot of drifting and drifting backwards at that.
I got the seat where you turn it one way and it is something to lean against, turn it the other way and it is more amenable to sitting on. Should you get a butt seat, I strongly recommend getting the pneumatic pedestal, so that you can change the angle of how you sit/lean from time to time.
On a side note, I don't flip very much at all, but I pitch quite a bit. Anyway, I first learned to pitch sitting down, in a 2 man Water Buster. You can learn how to pitch sitting down, just takes practice.
Strongly recommend a 6 1/2 or 6' rod, as opposed to a 7' or longer rod for this application.
If you are going to fish co-angler very much, knowing how to make a 60' pitch sitting down is a good skill to have.
Thanks everyone.
I think I'll stick to my chairs for now........can't cheat around on the bad back issue and there have been many times where I needed to sit down and have the back support.
Here's a seat that's a real back saver doubles as a butt seat. I have two of them one for me and one for my Co-Angler.
I have a back fusion and must be able to actually sit down for a while. Bass fishing is the worst thing for my back.
Besides I tried the butt seat when I first got my boat and every time I would bend over I'd contact the butt seat and just about knock my fatt butt out of the boat. Go ahead and laugh. It is funny, now!!
My boat just has a sitting seat, which I leave at the bank. If I had a butt seat I would probably use it since I find myself leaning against things throughout normal days, but I cannot afford to buy one right now. Even with chronic back pain and after a back surgery I find that a day fishing doesn't bother me too much. Maybe it's all the moving that I do on the deck. Now my feet are another story. . .
I have something similar to what Pa Angler posted a link to and it works for me. I have to rest my back at some point in time as it gets tired. Also what has helped me when I stand is the absence of a trolling motor pedal which I used to keep my foot on all the time all day long. With the remote Terrova, both feet are on the deck and it keeps both of my hips straight. Seemed to help tremendously. Just some more info for you to ponder over.

And more $$$$$.
The Terrova/Xi5 are on my list of interests.

Chris, if you can afford it down the road and you are not partial to the big foot pedal the bass guys are using, then you will no doubt love the Terrova. I had a Power drive on my old boat, and the reaction time was really slow. The new Terrova's are much faster than the power drives, however they are not as fast as the cable style trolling motors. I on the other hand was never a big fan of the cable style trolling motors. I always had a low profile pedal and it has made it easier on my back. I do stand a lot, but I also can walk around and not have to be chained to my foot pedal. It is just easier for me with this style of trolling motor. It's not for everyone, there are die hard bass guys that just hate it. To each his own. If you have any questions or want more info, just let me know.

This is what I use and love it. Just like J said, if my back gets sore just spin it around.
Never got the whole butt set thing!
I've always bought extra tall pedestals or made my own. I've always walked around a lot so I just folded the down out of the way. I can cast, flip, pitch, or punch sitting; when I set hook I'll stand at the same time.
I have severe back problems. I just can't get used to sitting. I use a butt seat but every hour or so I go down to the running seats and sit for a while. gives me a chance for some coffee and think about my next plan of action.

This
Don't know about butt seats but I love my Tempress Navistyle Hi-Back.
Basically my seats are just lean-to's and not seats at all. They are concave on one side and semi pointy on the other. I raise mine to my lower back when I want it for balance in rougher water or wake from boats but it's not really for sitting on. Luckily, no back problems so far so nice comfy seats aren't a mandate yet.

Take a look at this:
Butt seats for now but a little arthritis in the middle of my back says we may be going to seats before long.
Just learning to fish. Have a bass tracker Pro190TX and I tend to be on the back deck. I am not totally comfortable yet in the boat and thought about getting a casting/butt seat to use instead of the large normal seat to have more room to move around. Tend to lean on the current seat when the back is folded down. Could someone tell me the difference between a casting seat vs a butt seat? Been looking at the Tempress Pro Casting Boat Seat due to the fact it appears to be a bit larger and has a higher back. Any input would be appreciated.
Nobody has mentioned it, but stretching every now and then helps tremendously, depending on your issue. Maybe I'm nuts but I'm not above laying on my back right on the deck and...
a) giving the back a good rest and some proper lower back stretches
b) getting some sun
c) resting my wrists and arms
Just a few minutes here and there helps me more than any chair or pain meds can, on a boat or on the banks
Spinal fusion several years ago changed everything for me. If somebody else is in the boat or its rough I must use my butt seat. It allows me to use my whole body to compensate for the boats movement. If fishing alone and it's calm I can use my sit down seat. The sit down seat forces me to stabilize my upper body from my lower back which is bad news quick and fast if it's rough. I can't stand to long without fatiguing and then the pain follows shortly. I can lean for as long as I want. Hope that helps.
I do not sit much while fishing but when I do
I straddle . . .
So there is another option.

Fourscore and six years ago...I still prefer the concave lumbar support over anything.
