I am compiling a list for Walmart of stuff to pick up for the boat this weekend.

Extra boat key
Sunscreen
Bugspray
Paddle
Flashlight w batteries
Spotlight
Rain gear.
I have a lot of other stuff as well. I thought this might be a chance to go thru what everyone else carries in their boat. Come on!

I carry a tool kit, I carry enough sizes of sockets, wrenches, vice grips, bits, etc., that I can adjust any size nut, bolt or screw that is on my boat or trailer. Specifically, don't forget a prop wrench for your big motor and several extra pins. If you ever get a bunch of line wrapped around your big motor prop, you need to get it off NOW! It is possible to mess up seals and stuff pretty quickly.
Looking at your list, I think that a culling system is very optimistic. If I fished a bunch of tournaments I would probably have one on my boat, but given my current level of skill, it would probably gather dust.
There are a few things that I carry that aren't on your list.
A - Lure Retrievers. I carry both the extendable pole type and the hound dog type. I
seem to know multiple ways to get stuck, so I need both kinds of lure retrievers. I
use both of them every tri it seems.
B - I always carry a heavy duty extendable push pole for shallow situations where
running the trolling motor isn't appropriate.
C - As I've gotten older, I've found it necessary to plan ahead for taking a leak. Most
of the time I can hang it over the side to take a leak, paying attention to wind
direction of course. I have found that when it is really windy, that is a bad idea.
I don't like standing on the edge of the boat in that situation.
Carrying a bottle that is easy to leak in to is handy in that circumstance. I just keep
mine in the livewell. That way it is always "rinsed out"
D - This year I have decided to pay more attention to water clarity and be more
"measurable" about it, so I carry a secchi disc now.
E - I see you are carrying a spot light. I do as well, although I don't use it often.
F - I do on occasion practice selective harvest, and most of the lakes I fish week to
week have a fish cleaning station on site. In my fishing truck, I keep a fish
cleaning kit. Fillet knife, skinning pliers, zip lock bags, hand cleaner, etc.
Cleaning fish is alot easier when you've got all the right tools ready.

A set of jumper cables. If you're 5 miles from the ramp and find your cranking battery won't crank the motor, you can jump it off one of your trolling batteries.
If the electric trim on your motor runs through 2 relays as most do, have 2 spare relays on hand. They're cheap, easy to replace and can keep you on the water or get you back to the ramp.

Second on the pfds and a throwable. I keep 2 in my boat, one in front and back. Get a fire extinguisher too. I believe that is a law in most if not all states.

Until I started using BR, I never knew how much stuff Walmart carries. I don't shop there often if ever, especially for fishing stuff but I'm surprised to see how many guys on here use that place as their primary tackle spot. It must boil down to location and whats available. Anytime I have peeked at the fishing stuff in a Walmart around here it is usually junk for the most part.

Mark, take a trip down south. Where we have one small aisle of fishing stuff, they have multiple large aisles.

Southern IL or southern US? I've been to Missouri, Kentucky, Tenn, Arkansas, Florida...just never in a Wally World there. So it's a location thing I suppose. Being that we have 2 Bass Pros, Cableas, and mulitiple DSG in driving distances...I guess that would explain why our Wally worlds have junk.

South of I80 LOL Hell, I was at a Wallyworld in TN in which the local police dept. was located in the store.

I will never again not have a set of jumper cables in my boat. On 2 separate occasions I got to the ramp, only to find out my cranking battery was dead and couldn't start my motor. Now I keep a pair in the boat and my truck.

I asked this same question and I got some good advice when I bought my first boat... Buy it when you need it. Outside of the stuff to make you safe and legal, and most of this stuff listed here is good advice, but what some use, others never will. I have some boat fenders that I have never used that I bought right after I got my boat. A total waste of money. Keep a pen and paper on the boat and when you identify a need, write it down.

I use a mini mag light, but I also have a hat clip on led light if I need hands free.

Don't forget a roll of toilet paper, stored in a zip-lock bag. Ya just never know if/when it will be needed.

Anchor and a good rope that is 3 times longer than the deepest water you plan to be in. This is an absolute safety necessity for any boat. Stranded but anchored in a storm is much better than stranded and being beat to death on the rocks.

I prefer a package of baby wipes. Good for your hands, face, and whatever else that needs a good wipe. But, I still carry TP also as a back up, also in my work truck

down here in georgia where im at, the nearest bass pro is about 3 hours. The walmart closest to me has 4 large aisles of nothing but fishing stuff. at the dsg closest to me, a quarter of the store is all fishing stuff and they really dont carry much low quality stuff.

You may want to take the boat to your local Power Squadron and have them inspect the boat and tell you what they suggest you have on board.
If your state's game and fisheries prints a booklet on safe boating you can look for it's checklist.
Other things you may need include fuses, extra prop with a small block of wood and a strong wrench; pliers; extra motor keys; registration for boat, motor and trailer; anchor; ropes to tie to dock; and something good luck. You always want something for good luck.
Have fun. Be safe. And watch out for the fools on the water.

I carry a piece of PVC pipe about 3 feet long to use to relieve myself. I don't have to worry about peeing on my boat and I just rinse it out to flush. I call it my pee v c.

All great ideas! I have added a few things to my boat since once is a pair of cheap bino's to check spot and see if there is a boat on them from a distance. secondly is a cheap snorkel mask. I hung a terminator spinnerbait the other day and dove to get it. I was trying to follow the line down and retrieve it. No go... Now have a mask.

Glad I'm not the only person to get in the water to get a lure, I've fished with people that think I'm weird for jumping in for a spinnerbait or whatever but man I can't stand losing lures, a hook and worm is one thing but a spinnerbait or crank bait gets snagged and I'm getting in to get my money back LOLOn 7/8/2013 at 8:45 PM, BuckMaxx said:All great ideas! I swam naked for a custom painted jerk bait a few years ago in 58 degree water. It was the only thing they were biting on. I wont do that again, but by the time the shrinkage factor set in, I was already wet and committed. I might have to rethink that next time.

At least you have a small fishing aisle. The south side doesn't have anything lol. The walmart in branson, Missouri hasnt a decent amount of stuff but you might as well stop at BPS on your way.

Did you try the bow trick or also reel down to the bait? I would let that spinnerbait go for the price anything above $15 and I'll work to get it back though.

As previously stated a hook cutter. Mine is an 8" bolt cutter from Menards. Under $5 and lifetime guarantee. It's not only handy for cutting heavy wire or nail weights, it's a life saver for fish hooked through a gill plate, an eye, or in the throat. Not to mention getting a hook free from a hand or a head.

I fish a lake that is heavily matter with weeds. the frog bite is UNREAL in it. but you simply can't motor into to a lot of water so I bought a Avery extendable push pole. I then made a lure retriever head out of a paint roller body that pins on the end. Now I have my push pole slash lure retriever stowed away in the bottom of my box.

Thanks for advice. I think about a headlamp. It's more convinient to use when fishing. I've heard about Zebralight H51 a lot. Recently I have found one more headlamp - Armytek Wizard

Lots of great suggestions here, and you can almost see a regional influence.
Don't forget spare fuse(s) and a prop pin for the trolling motor, and fuses for the switchblock if your boat has them. Also 2 spare drain plugs and a clip on hat light for the glovebox... eventually you will need them.

Spare prop? why would you need a spare prop? Maybe if you are travelling 20 miles.
you need a couple of screwdrivers and some pliers. or a real tool kit.
get some cheap jumper cables in case your starting battery dies so you can jump it with your TM batts.

I found a container of Wet Wipes to be more multi-functional than a roll of TP, but there is enough storage in my boat that I carry both, several containers of both, really. When you come across a fellow angler "caught short" you just want to throw him a roll of tp and be done with it, and NOT be worried about running out yourself later.
