Giving some pretty strong consideration to buying a new 2015 Nitro Z6 with a Mercury Optimax Pro XS 115. So for those of you who are Nitro or Mercury owners what are your thoughts on pros and cons of these boats and motors?
I feel like you would be better of buying a used boat. Ssure 22k no hagle price. but when you figure putting decent electronics plus taxes and dealer fees that they add in your closer to 30k. I would think your better of buying a 2006-2010 Barely used Nitro/Triton/skeeter in great shape that has the 225. that has the power pole, that has the electronics. especially if you fish tournys. get the 200-250HP that 115 is gonna be a dog.
Buy Mike Ike's Boat.

Sure that boat might have been fished hard. but it was probably very well maintained and probably in tip top shape.
I would agree with the above and say that you can get much more for your money by buying used. You can get a lot of used boat for the same price. www.boattrader.com
Also I used to work at a dealership and it seemed people were extremly happy with the 2 stroke outboards all the saltwater guides who ran offshore almost always ran an ETEC or Saltwater series II HPDI yamaha.the 2 strokesare extremely realiable and lower maintence cost. The annual service on a boat with twin 225 ETEC's was the same as a year on a single 4 stroke yamaha or Verado in the same HP.
My dad has a 2002 yamaha HPDI 225 that recieves about 75 hours a year and with the mininmum recommended maintanance that motor has never left him stranded.
I've owned quite a few used boats in my life and with every one of them I've inherited someone else's problems and the warranty and financing options are a plus as well. Last year my boat was in the shop 4 months out of the year and for what I paid in repairs I could have been paying a note on a new one. I'd like a bigger boat like you guys mentioned but I drive a 2005 GMC Canyon (smaller truck) I really can't pull it.
You sir, have a very good problem

I'm 16 man, and when I get older I'm gonna buy the nicest bass boat I can find haha. Good luck on your decision!
Having a father on the bass pro nitro state team certainly has its perks. One being I've sat in a z9 the last 8 years. I've rode in and drove triton ranger nitro stratos skeeter and Phoenix. You cannot beat a nitro z series boat. Especially buying one new. The warranty is excellent. mercury outboards are the best of the best when it comes to that. You will not be disappointed when you take that bad boy out on the water. Very very good quality and fishability. Get it and let us know how happy you are to have got it.
I too was looking at the z6 nitro. I ended up with a triton 179trx with 115 pro xs. Yes, a bigger boat would be nice but........I have tacoma and didn't want to put too much strain on the truck. Plus I wanted a boat I could fit in my garage and not have to buy/build a covered area to store it. I couldn't be happier with it. I have friends with the 21ft boats and 250's. They have higher running/maintenance costs and only go 10-15mph faster than I do(practical speed, not max) The speed, storage and deck space is nice but not worth double the cost to me. Do not add the upgraded electronics from the factory. Nitro/bps charges way too much. Your better off getting the base model and purchasing electronics off the 'Bay. Either install yourself or pay someone to do it. You'll come out way ahead.
^ agree completely.

Only 10-15 mph faster? How fast is that 115 pushing you?
I have a 2011 Nitro Z-6. Have had it about a year and have had good service out of the boat so far, very happy. Optimax 115 will do 55+ mph +. Also maintenance coat are good, All in all good boat for the money.
I have a little older but very similar boat in the Nitro 882DX, it has the 115 on it. If there is one piece of advice I could offer you from a guy that uses this boat often, it would be to get the 150. You will be happy you did.

57mph with 2 healthy guys. 36 gallons of fuel, full live wells and too much tackle. Fast enough for me. My buddy cruises at 62 in his pheonix. He Can go 70 plus but rarely does. I don't see too many people going more than 15 mph more than me.

You sir have the worlds fastest 115!
Congrats
I must have. Thanks guyOn 1/13/2015 at 1:43 PM, Hi Salenity said:You sir have the worlds fastest 115!

It is not even so much the top end, my boat with me in it and a little fuel, some fishing gear will run 51GPS once it gets on plane. The thing is I don't like the time it takes to for the nose to come over. If that does not bother you then the 115 may be big enough, but I am going to bet with a couple of guys a tank of gas and some fishing gear and you are not going to like it much.

57 seems pretty fast, is that on the speed O or GPS?

The z6 looks like a nice wide boat with great storage. I'm sure you'd love it. Depending on the size of lakes you fish and the number of payments you'll have to make you may regret that 115?
Ride in one before you jump off that cliff.
I don't care who you are everyone wishes they had a faster boat.

Speedometer.

You might want to check that against the GPS in your finder, my speedometer usually shows about a 4 mph difference. 57 with a 115 moving that kind of weight would be really fast.
My fiancée and I got a 2015 Nitro Z6 in November with the 115 4 stroke. The guys I bought it from took it out the day before I picked it up and said he got it to 55MPH. I've gone 40 fully loaded down and sure I would love to go faster but it doesn't make a difference to me. It planes quickly, has adequate storage. The only problem I have found is if I want to store my rods on deck where they put the strap (port side) it interfers if I lay the trolling motor down, they gave me an extra so I can mount it on the starboard side no big deal.
I am a first time boat owner so to me this little boat is outstanding that fit in our price range without runnin the risk of going used and getting a lemon. If we could I would of opted for the Z7 but for now the 6 is amazing. I've only taken it out maybe 5 times and the winch on the trailer broke so that will get fixed tomorrow but other than that we have loved it.
Purchased a 2014 Z6 this past July. I went back and forth on buying a larger, used boat, but ended up purchasing a brand new z6.
I had the crappy Lowrance at the console mounted at the bow (looking to upgrade ASAP to something with side imagining), put an Elite 5 HDI at the console, had a keel guard installed, added a passenger console, had the cheaper rims put on, and didn't choose the option for the $600 cover. During the season, I store the boat in my garage (barely, barely fits) and had it wrapped for winter storage.
I had an issue with a cracked rim, luckily I had a spare as the tire would not hold air. When my boat was in the shop for wrapping and winterizing, the BPS guys in Hooksett, NH took care of the warranty swap and I received a new rim with no hassle.
Overall, I love the boat and am very happy with the purchase. I know someone above mentioned having 36 gallons of fuel in their boat (maybe he has a second tank), but I believe my z6 holds 21 gallons. With a full tank and about 425 pounds of passengers in the boat, I topped out at just over 50mph on the GPS. However, I have not been able to get the boat on plane with 3 people in the boat and just look like a goof with 3 guys in the boat going 7mph around the lake. Granted, although the boat has 3 seats, to keep with the weight rating, it is really 2 adults or 2 adults and a child. Anyone think a stabilizer would help with this? Or is the 115 just too small to get an overweight crew on plane?
I agree with Slefler, the rod strap on the deck should be on the other side as it gets in they way when the trolling motor is up.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Crankbank, I believe you're right with the 21 gal.
I've had 4 people in the boat, 3 of em were... Oversized myself included, it took a tad bit longer but we were able to get on plane but I really had to horse it at the beginning. When you mentioned that above it made me remember that was the only reason I was "if-y" on the z6, 2 people fish very comfortably but with 3 it gets a little cramped.
I can't imagine having the small Lowrance on the bow lol, I'm 6'4 that's a long way down. I had a HDS 7 Gen2 on a ram mount at the console, need something for the bow though.
That is good to know- I will have to try a little harder to get boat on plane with 3 people onboard.
Yeah, the crappy black and white 5" display is pretty much useless. Toying with the idea of swapping it out for a Humminbird 899.
I don't blame you. We kept the black and white flush mounted and it's surprisingly accurate and on par with the hds7 as far as depth and temp.

That is good to hear- as that is all we use it for anyways... I like having the mapping at the console, but am hoping to venture into the SI/SS world of electronics.
Nice, we have SI/DI, how to use it? I still have no earthly idea.
So after to talking to a lot of people including you guys, doing some research and going down and looking at some new Nitros I think I'm gonna go with a bigger boat. I'm going to go ahead and sell my truck and buy a full size truck now so I'm able to tow a bigger boat. Then later this year I'll buy either a Z7 or Z8.

I think you would be happier with th Z7. The Z6 is little small for the bigger lakes in MI.
Well I'm a step closer guys I sold my small truck last week and Monday I purchased a 2003 GMC Sierra Z71 extended cab 5.3. I now have my boat on the market so when it sells I'll be making a decision on which boat to buy. I'm gonna get at least a Z7 maybe bigger.

Not so much. We were pushing 65 with a 115 merc on our full bullet. Then again, I did rebuild it from scratch with the help of a former merc racing engine builder. You'd hear me coming miles away. But definitely go for the 150. It'll make a world of difference.

Any video of that?

That was almost 10 year ago. Way before I owned a smartphone. Or a phone in general. Oh...why do I feel old now?
Have to ditto the others. Test drive that Nitro, fill the livewells, bring some tackle, and a donut loving friend. See how well the craft gets on plane. I introduced a friend to bass fishing and he bought the equivalent boat a few years back and was bitterly disappointed. He gave it back to the shop, took the loss, and bought my Ranger. He's a very happy man now.
