Used these in combination with a spin float and 4lb. Fluorocarbon on a spinning rod. Caught brook and rainbow trout in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Had a blast, would recommend!

While I usually tie my own flies, this looked like a collection forth ordering. I thought the flies looked far better made than you’d find in the typical Chinese-made assortment, and the price was so low I was curious to see how they made them look so good. I figured even they weren’t great trout flies they’d be fine for panfish, or giving to beginners flailing away at the water.

The choice is good overall, with only a few that I’d discard. Some are very well made and proportioned, like the squirrel tail nymphs and the wooly buggers. Most are too bulky, a common fault of both amateur tiers and commercial flies. I’ve posted a photo of some of my flies next to this assortment, and you can see that my flies are tied a lot sparser. A few of the flies in this assortment are just not very good- all the dries, certainly. Every supplier of cheap flies feels the need to include a Royal Coachman, a fly that’s been around for over a century and featured in many books that I’ve never actually seen anyone fish.

The foam popper should be good for bass and larger panfish, as should the deer hair flies and most of the nymphs. Actually, any fly here should catch a hungry warm water fish if presented properly. Trout will be a little trickier, but the sparser nymphs, the wooly buggers, and the soft hackle flies should work if fished properly.

Would I recommend it? I think it would be well suited to a beginning fly fisher who is still getting the hang of it and expects to lose a lot of flies, especially if they’re fishing warm water. It’s a lot less traumatic to lose a dozen flies that cost less than 40 cents each than ones that you paid $3.50 for or spent an hour tying.
