Questions about Camp Chef 24 in. WIFI Woodwind Pellet Grill & Smoker with Sidekick (PG14) - WIFI & Bluetooth Connectivity
Q:
How wide is it all once it's assembled?
Answer: Hi. It’s 56 inches wide assembled with the sidekick.
Q:
Where is this manufactured? How thick are the walls?
Q:
Can you get this pellet grill with caster wheels?
Answer: Yes. I did.
Q:
What is the clearance under the sidekick to the ground? How many inches from the ground to the bottom of the sidekick?
Answer: I never measured but it looks like 16 to 18 inches
Q:
Could I cook a turkey with the 24-inch model?
Answer: Yes, I smoked a 13lb bird this year. BEST way to cook a turkey!!!! Slide a pan of water/stock/fruits/spices, etc under the rack
Answer: I don't see why not. If you remove the upper racks it should fit. I did a standing rib roast in a Corning dish to capture some of the juice this past Christmas and it turned out great.
Q:
How does the grill portion work if it doesn't have burners? i'm considering this or a pit boss combo with pellets and gas. i do a lot of gas cooking.
Answer: I had a Traeger Grill for over 10 years and when it finally quiet working; I spent a lot of time looking and comparing many of the pellet grills on the market. I settled on the Camp Chef 1) because of all the great reviews 2) all the options you can purchase for the Camp Chef 3) the value, I believe you get more with the Camp Chef for the money. The side burner for me is a must have, you can boil clams, crab and vegetables outside so it doesn’t stink up the house. I use it to cook sausage, eggs, French Toast and pancakes. The pizza oven that attaches is great. There are so many uses for the gas sidekick.
Answer: The sidekick is your gas burner. You need the Camp Chef Deluxe BBQ Grill accessory that you set on top of the burner.
Answer: It’s a separate gas burner with cast iron grates thr propane tank is held with a given bracket, works great
Answer: It has a slide out cover for grilling. It grills just fine. It also has an option to add a sear box, which sears steaks phenomenally.
Answer: You can pull a lever which removers the diffuser and provides an open flame. I had the optional sidekick which has burners also. I am very satisfied with my Campchef
Q:
Can anyone speak to the smoke control? I have a zgrills, entry level pellet smoker now, i wish the food tasted smokier....
Answer: Fantastic smoke control, however the more smoke the less accurate the temperature. So, you have to monitor closely.
Q:
Camp chef vs traeger pro 575?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: pellet clean out. variable speed control fan, upper and lower racks, higher cooking temperatures, optional side sear unit with attachments. Wifi is easier to use. like comparing a Lexus to a toyota.
Q:
How thick is the metal on the camp chef grill compared to the Traeger grill
Answer: Feels the same size in gauge
Q:
I would assume the controller is battery powered. if do how long does the battery last? does propane fuel both the side kick and the pellet grill?
Answer: It requires a 110 outlet to power the display, the pellet feed auger and the igniter. So, have an extension cord ready. The side kick is propane and does not require 110 power.
Answer: The controller is AC powered, no batteries. You can also control with your smart phone. The propane only fuels the sidekick, not the pellet grill. The pellet auger and heating element is AC powered.
Answer: It is not battery powered, you must plug this in. A pellet grill has an auger and the power cord is for the controller and the auger. Propane only runs the attachments if you get the, the sidekick and sear station.
Answer: You plug the grill into an electric outlet. No batteries. The propane only works on the side kick, Pellets fot the grill.
Answer: Controlled runs on a standard plug for the grill. Propane only effects the sidekick, the pellet grill uses an electric heating rod to ignite the pellets
Answer: The controller requires 110V. The propane only operates the Sidekick.
Answer: It has to be plugged in. The controls and the auger to move the pellets have to be powered.
Q:
Has anyone regretted getting the 24" unit instead of opting to get the larger 36" Woodwind?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: so I did think about getting the 36" version but in the end I didn't not. I am also glad I didn't the 24 is large enough to smoke 6 -8 chickens or racks of ribs. if you throw very large parties you might get some use out of the 36" but then you should be look at a different smoker then. you asked
Answer: For me the 24” is plenty. I have done 2 racks of ribs and a brisket no problem. If you are cooking for 20 or more people then maybe the 36” is for you.
Q:
can i convert the sidekick to natural gas?
Answer: i have seen people do that when they get them by making an orifice change, Camp Chef does not have a kit but its a flame thrower igntion system and most people are changing the orifice out
Q:
What are the grates made of?
Q:
Can you see the meat probe temps from the WiFi app?
Answer: Yes. You can also enter a name (chicken, tri-tip whatever) for each probe for whatever it is that you are smoking.
Answer: Yes, but I don't believe the temp was accurate. I used a Meater prob and got a different temp which I believe was accurate.
Answer: Absolutely, and you get to name each probe if you want. This is a great product.Bob L.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Does it come with a cover?
Answer: No, it does not.
Q:
Have they upgraded the app for android by now?
Answer: Only for some phones. It's been rough for me and my Android devices. IPhone and samsung seem to be good. I have Google Pixel 4XL and before that a Moto Droid Z4. Neither came close to working well. Grill still is fantastic but the wifi portion has been terrible.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Can you program your app to automatically adjust the temperature of the grill to keep the food warm once your food is done cooking?
Answer: No, but it’s simple to lower the temperature in the app.
Q:
Could the grill be easily be "built in" to an outdoor kitchen?
Answer: I haven’t received it yet.
Q:
How tall is it from the lowest point without legs? We want to install on a pull out tray in our rv
Q:
we do not have 2.4 g internet only 5G. Will the wireless firmware be updated so that we can use that feature??
Q:
Why don't all 4 legs have casters?
Answer: stability? I put mine in its spot and have not had to use the wheels after that.
Q:
How much to convert my pg24mzg smoke pro to pid controller
Q:
This comes with the sidekick griddle correct Does this one model come with the griddle
Answer: Correct it comes with pg14 sidekick griddle
Q:
Can you cook two 16-20 lb brisket on this at once?
Answer: Yes one on top rack and one on lower rack
Q:
How many pounds of pellets will this consume per hour at 225 degrees?
Answer: less than 1 lb
Q:
What Accessories are available for this bbq?
Answer: Optional cover, insulated blanket, jerky racks, front shelves
Q:
What is the length of the electric cord that powers the auger?
Answer: I actually haven’t unwound the cord yet. I use an extension cord from my house to the smoker. I’m not at home now so i can’t measure it. I would guess 6 or 8 feet at least.
Q:
Are there restrictions for the type of pellets used?
Answer: Yes. Make sure to use pellets specifically for pellet grills. These are pure wood pellets with no binders. There are cheaper pellets available for pellet stoves. Pellet stoves are not used for cooking. They are used for heating a garage or house. These cheaper pellets usually contain binding agents like glue.
Answer: No. But would suggest you use a high-grade pellet-like Traeger or Rec Tec. This is an excellent Smoker and Pellet Grill.
Q:
How well does the sidekick do for searing?
Answer: It does very well, but you need the BBQ Grill box accessory, otherwise you'll have to do a griddle sear because that's what it comes with.
Q:
How many square inches of grill on the 24"?
Answer: Bottom rack is 418 sq. In
Answer: Lower Rack Area: 19.5 in. x 22 in.
Q:
Does this include the next gen wifi?
Answer: yes the new woodwinds have the new wifi
Answer: Yes it does, the app for it works better with iPhone than Android
Q:
I would assume the controller is battery powered. If so how long does the battery last? Does propane fuel both the side kick and the pellet grill?
Answer: Propane is for sidekick only.
Answer: No it plugs into the wall
Q:
If I get the Sidekick, does it come with the griddle and grill box or do I need to purchase those separately?
Answer: When I bought my Camp Chef Woodwind Pellet Smoker it came with the Sidekick. The Sidekick came with a griddle. I also bought the Sear Box which has the grill.
Answer: The Camp Chef Sidekick I got came with the Flat top griddle. I had to order the Camp Chef BBQ Grill Box Accessory separately.
Answer: It comes with a griddle, but the "grill" part is sold separately. I bought the Camp Chef Deluxe BBQ box to put on the sidekick for searing steaks or grilling burgers, etc...
Answer: Comes with griddle
Answer: Comes with the griddle you will have to purchase the grill box and pizza oven separately.
Answer: pg14 is the griddle and sideburner sold separately
Q:
It is an electric grille?
Answer: Food safe wood pellets are what you actually use to smoke / grill / bake. Electricity is used to drive the auger and deliver pellets into the firebox. An electronic ignition starts the fire once pellets are present, and an electric bellows keeps the flame going. If equipped, the side accessory (searbox or sidekick) uses propane. So yes, you need electricity to run the grill but its not the main fuel source. I hope that was not too confusing.
Answer: The main pellet grill part is electric. The sidekick burner is propane
Answer: It uses electricity to burn and smoke the pellets.
Answer: Yes. Electric and uses pellets
Answer: yes
Q:
Does the wifi app allow you to leave the house and run errands while still staying connected via a server the way our Arlo security system works?
Answer: Yes it does. Just connect the grill to your WiFi and when you leave your home network, the app will still have a cellular link to the grill.
Answer: Yes it does. I met a buddy for a beer and connected to app thru Sprint LTE and could control temp and smoke. Actually turned my arlo camera at the smoker so i could see it as well. Really cool stuff
Answer: I don't know. The app doesn't work on the android platform. We love the grill, but disappointed we can't get the app to work on our phones!
Answer: Yes it is supposed to let you do that although we have had issues staying connected even while at home.
Q:
Where is this manufactured? How thick (what gage) are the walls?
Q:
Does this grill come with front caster wheels
Answer: It comes as pictured, two casters and two legs without casters.
Q:
What is the return policy on the grill?
Answer: I don't know. I have no intention of returning
Product reviews of Camp Chef 24 in. WIFI Woodwind Pellet Grill & Smoker with Sidekick (PG14) - WIFI & Bluetooth Connectivity
Uhmm : Griddle is the worst part
Bought one for my son for college graduation and was going to upgrade my Treager but so far it's even for the money.
Amazon Customer : *** Dinner will never be the same ***
First of all the smoker was easy to assemble. My 10 year old "helped" me put it together as a fun Father/Son project, and if he can read the directions and follow them anyone can. Once we assembled it and ran through the required 30 minute break in period, it was time to put her to the test. As you can see from the pictures, she looks great on the deck, but looks aren't everything. I was impressed with the simple and easy to use computer display. I also had no issues hooking it up to the CAMP CHEF APP and controlling it from my iPhone. The controls were easy to see in the bright light, and the temperature probes were a cinch to hook up and operate. This is our first smoker and as a family of 7 to have everyone at dinner raving about how good it is was nothing short of a miracle. We smoked pork shoulder for our first test, and it came out delicious. Some of our kiddos are very picky eaters but the plates were all cleaned. The CAMP CHEF was not only easy to use but it was fun. I will be spending a lot of time this summer smoking everything I can think of. Thanks for the AMAZING smoker Camp Chef! We will be buying more products in the future from you!
ANA : Easy to use and convenient
So far so good. Very easy to use. Good flavor but charcoal is still better in terms of flavor profile. Was wondering why people still opt for the sear box. Found out that while there's an option to use open flame, it only does a so-so job getting the desired grill marks. I do want to mention that after some time, I got bored doing nothing and just waiting for it to be done. You set the temp and leave it alone. But on the flip side it allowed me to do other things without attending to it too much. Overall, I like it for the ease of use and I can check the temp indoors. That was the reason why I bought it for - time saver and convenient.

Jared : Good grill, bad experience
Bought this grill in June. Arrived and I immediately assembled as I was really excited to try it. Unfortunately the auger didn’t work so no pellets were fed to grill. Emailed camp chef customer service. Took them about 3 days to respond which isn’t terrible I guess. The customer service rep was very polite and didn’t give me any pushback on trying to fix the problem. She told me I could try to replace the hopper or just try and replace the auger. She said the hopper was super easy to replace and they would ship me a new one. She said it was 4 simple screws. The hopper finally arrived about 2 weeks later and the packaging was damaged as if it traveled by horse and wagon to get here (see pic). The hopper was a little damaged but I just fixed myself to not have to deal with another shipment and use the grill I’ve been so excited about. Well, the hopper was not super easy to put in as explained. The whole job of removing the old and replacing the new took about 2 hours. I really think in my case of buying a brand new grill that camp chef should hire some technicians to come and do these fixes for you. I mean it was $1200 and then had to fix it myself. Just doesn’t make sense. I’m very happy with the grill now but think Camp Chef can do better with customer service.
R. Gunn : Produces some really great smoked meats
Totally in love with my woodwind 24! I’ve had it for 3 weeks now and used it 6 times. I first smoked a whole chicken low and slow, awesome flavor and juicy! Then I have been experimenting with smoking then searing on the sidekick (with grill box attachment). I’ve done burgers, steaks, and pork chops, all great! I smoke them for about an hour or two on “high smoke”(220degrees, smoke level 3) depending, wait to get close to temp, then pull them off and sear them on the grill box at high heat (it gets to like 800 degrees!) for a minute or two per side and bam they are perfect. I also used the woodwind as more of a traditional grill once for 2 lbs of chicken thighs, cooked them at 375 for around 20 minutes and they were juicy and still had a ton of smoke flavor, so you don’t even have to smoke low and slow to get that wood flavor. So far I haven’t turned the smoke level up past 3, and i still get heavy smoke flavor. I read reviews of pellet grills in general not having enough smoke flavor but i have not had that problem at all. I have been using traeger brand hickory pellets, but looking forward to trying other woods and other brands. Next up I’m trying a brisket, watch out! Oh also my side shelf was bent upon delivery—their customer service sent me a new side shelf and added front shelf just to be nice, now that’s customer service right there. I almost bought a Traeger originally, but I’m really glad I went with Camp Chef. Feels like a product that will last me 10 years. Oh also, the app worked from the start for me and is super easy to use. I did have one time when it randomly wouldn’t connect via Bluetooth. I chose “forget device” on my Bluetooth settings in my phone and then reconnected and it has been fine ever since. So nice to have the app to monitor grill temp and probe temps. Love the 22lb hopper capacity so I don’t have leftover pellets sitting in bags. Easy clean out feature it great. Really can’t say enough about this machine. This is my first pellet grill and the first time I’ve ever smoked meats, so happy!
Michael Hunter : Not bad, but not good either.
First off I've had this grill since may 2020, almost a year. My first impression was a bad one. The box arrived badly damaged, Assembly was easy enough, directions are straight forward and easy to read. I will say this thing is heavy, way heavier than my relatives traeger.
Food tastes great right off the bat, I've only connected it via Bluetooth so I can't speak for the wifi. Controller is extremely well built, easy to use, and aesthetically pleasing.
The bad: it arrived with two missing screws and two very loose screws that hold the hopper and controller. Moving it with the screws how they were I'm surprised the loose ones didn't give out. Second bad, the lid leaks smoke everywhere, so bad on a windy day it seems to just blow the smoke right out of the smoker. I contacted campchef about both issues. I was told the lid was designed that way, and they gave me the size of the machine screws to go buy (I didn't ask for new screws, it's easier to get them from the hardware store). They did eventually send a new lid, but ill be dang if it wasn't loose and rattling around in the box with the hardware. Scratches everywhere. Last gripe, the quality of the grates at this price range is atrocious, so hopefully after a few years you can find a work around.
The customer service was very nice and quick to respond, but if they keep packing product like they do they're just throwing money away.
Uhmm : Griddle is the worst part
Bought one for my son for college graduation and was going to upgrade my Treager but so far it's even for the money.
Darrel Ralphce : Not built well
Well Wow! I was expecting a fantastic smoker.
I got a Home Depot cheap POS! It leaks grease nit into the bucket mind you but 6 inches away from the bucket. It leaks smoke everywhere even out the tubular legs lol! I set it at 325 Degrees f it stayed at 295 on a day that was 60 degrees! The controller works at about an 8 out of 10. Simple but effective. I have used it three times now. Every time I have had to stop and restart the grill. The side kick is great BUT. It will not light via the sparker! I feel this dangerous. The results from smoking sessions was an 8 out of.10 also . MAN I have about 1500 invested with issues like these? Not happy at all!

Bart Jacks : Expensive but worth it!
I Like Alot of smoke flavor. My ONLY complaint is I can't get it to smoke more!
Other than that this has been a great purchase! A smoker and grill all in one!
The there was a couple.of things that made this one stand out above ALL the others.
1. The pellet hopper clean out! So easy to change out flavors of pellets or to store them away.
2. The burner clean out! This probably should have been my first but, this was crucial to my purchase!
3. The sliding grill vs smoke plate inside that is controlled by an exterior pull! LOVE LOVE LOVE this feature!
4. The connectivity with wifi and Bluetooth! I did my first brisket over night with the automated system!
My old one I had to get up every hour to check the temp! This was worth the price right there!
My ONLY concern is, how.long this will last before I have to replace it. I have a cover for it but my grills get used alot and throughout the whole year! My grills only last about 4 to 5 years. My wife said, "that's alot of money just to have to replace it in 4 years"
So I'm time will tell...
Dickle : Horrible customer service
Don’t expect support (or even a callback) if your unit takes a dump.
Auger and auger fan stopped working after 2 years. 3 calls and 2 emails to Camp Chef have gone unanswered. Damn idiots must run the place.

Halvycp : Well built, very easy to use. Not your Dad's old-fashioned grill!
I bought this for my dad's 80th birthday. He has been cooking old school for decades and he is so excited for the upgrade. Easy for him to use. The large wheels make it easy for him to roll it around. The controls are simple. The construction is amazing. One of the best features of the Camp Chef is the Sidekick. So cool that we can attach the one burner with a griddle to the side. Dad already has his eye on the pizza oven!
It did take a little time to set up. Not hard, just took a little time. I tried it on my own at first, but it was easier with two people.
We have been cooking on my brother's Woodwind, but his doesn't have WiFi. (Nothing but the best for dad!) The heat is consistent and easy to control and a cooks like a gem.

Mark Redman : Works like advertised, Nice grill.
This is my first pellet grill. It works great, just as they said it would. Item arrived quicker than they originally said it would. It was a little involved assembly but the instructions were fairly good. Some areas of assembly instructions were not clear. There was no missing hardware. Assembled by myself and took approximately 4-5 hours to complete and was doing the burn in. Very easy to operate. Was pleasantly surprised with the wifi/bluetooth setup. Read a lot of bad reviews about the wifi and I had no problems setting it up and operating via wifi. Overall quite happy with my purchase. I have only had for 2 weeks so I can't speak to reliability.
