why is this dehydrator almost $500?
Answer: At this point the cost for the more expensive (metal shelf) version is 350 dollars, not "almost 500". Still pretty steep, and maybe over-priced. But everyone who owns one seems to rave about it being a piece of quality equipment. More like investing in a major appliance than, say, picking up a blow dryer at Costco.
Answer: The reality is no dehydrator is worth this much, you are paying for a name brand and convenience of folding it away. There is a lot of cheaper models with more power 1000W for $100 starting up to 200 for folding style like this. I was going to purchase one but there was one review on another site that made me reconsider this.
Answer: The price reflects the cost of manufacturing. All very high quality materials: tempered glass doors with heavy-duty stainless steel hinges large, stainless shelves, and rugged construction with high temperature resistant plastics. The construction is quite a bit more complicated than a standard box dehydrator (it takes a lot of parts to make it fold). Many dehydrators feel a bit flimsy and are not built to last. Spend just a few minutes with this one and you appreciate the quality in design and construction.

Answer: I spent $150 more than a comparably sized model of a different brand, in order to have stainless steel shelves and to be able to store the unit easily. The quality of the materials, ease of use, dual time settings, and compact size when folded (I can store it on a cupboard shelf) have made my investment worthwhile to me.

Are the shelves stored inside the folded-down unit? Or do you have to take them out and store them separately?
Answer: The shelves are stored separately. They come with their own zippered storage case which is about an inch high an keeps all the shelves together and clean while not in use.

Answer: You could use it as a proofing oven, the lowest temperature would be 85 degrees but there is no humidity control. You can use the dehydrator to culturing yogurt and fermentation too.

When the timer goes off, does it automatically shut off the machine?
Answer: Yes, the dehydrator will shut off once the timer has elapsed. The Sahara Dehydrator has a dual-timer function, so it can be set to run at one temperature for a specific length of time, then switch to a second temperature for a specific length of time. This is quite useful for setting a high temperature at the beginning of the dehydrating process to dehydrate a food item quickly, then finish the dehydration at a lower temperature. I just dried some green beans, now after a few days they have a tinge of white on some, are they spoiled?
Answer: Proper storage of dried food items is important to prevent spoiling. Dried foods should be stored in an air-tight container such as a mason jar or vacuum-sealed bag. The white color you are seeing could be a discoloration associated with the drying, but the safest option would be to discard them, especially if the white areas are at all powdery or fluffy (like mold).

Answer: I have had steel and plastic shelves in other dehydrators and the biggest difference to me is durability most noticeable when they twist from how you carry or set them down.

Answer: The mats do not have edges, so a thicker liquid like for making fruit leather will stay on the mat, but something with the viscosity of milk would not.

Answer: You get 16 x 10 of surface per shelf. You could probably fit three or four shelves with the garlic on it. When you use 7-shelf it gives you maybe an inch between each so your head of garlic wouldn't fit.
Answer: It would really depend on how big those heads of garlic are. I'm not going to try and figure it out because I don't have that much garlic. Let's just say... A lot of garlic. More than 20....dare I say more than 50...??

Answer: We are essentially discounting the price of the Poly Unit to allow folks to purchase who might not otherwise be able to. It should be priced higher.

How many pounds of beef can be dried in one batch?
Answer: I haven't used mine for drying meat yet. But the shelving trays are pretty sturdy, so It would probably depend on how you're prepping the meat (thickness, size of pieces, etc.).

Answer: Very important: The DR-710 sold in the USA is 120V only. The DR-720 sold in Europe and other locations is 220-240V. Using a system on the wrong voltage may damage the unit and void the warranty. If unsure check the rating panel for the model number and voltage before plugging the unit in.

Answer: The dehydrator unit can fit either type of shelving, so you could order the unit with poly plastic shelves, and later replace them with stainless steel. The carrying case will fit the dehydrator regardless of which shelving option you choose.

Answer: Fan only mode happens when you are selecting a temperate and scroll the control wheel all the way to the lowest temperature and then keep going left. Below 85 Degree it will go into Fan Only mode. To turn off the Fan Only mode scroll the control wheel to the right when selecting a temperature.

Answer: Silpat is a brand, and while for example their 3d molds probably wouldn't be a good idea with most fillings however any food and temperature safe mat or sheet including a silpat silicone one should be fine for fruit paste or anything else you want to use a sheet for.

Answer: The fan in the Sahara is very different from old-style typical dehydrators. Most dehydrators use a typical "propeller" fan. The Sahara use a curved blade rotary fan. It blows heated air out from the sides. Fresh filtered air is drawn in from the back, while some recycled air is also drawn in from the front. This circulates the air inside, keeps the humidity low for drying and is energy efficient. There is a animation of this on the manufacturer web-site (cannot link to this here).

I like the stainless steel shelves and the amazing folding ability of this dehydrator! Fantastic design. Works really well, has variable temp settings including low enough to dry mushrooms perfectly. Made delicious dried apples, persimmons, bananas, and fruit rollups. Good color retention in the fruit. Lots of shelf space. Until my next harvest from the garden, it's tidily folded up on a shelf, along with the thin zippered pack of shelves. I'm eager to try drying flowers and herbs and even some garden veg. Wonder if it would help the next time one of us drops a cell phone in water?

This is an amazing dehydrator, I had it running at 135° for 8 hours, making miso salmon jerky, made my house smell like a fish market ???? worth it! I want to persevere the shelves for as long as possible, so I put the fish on 1/4 sheet trays. Worked amazing. Really intuitive to open and unfold, thought I would need an engineering degree but it was really simple. The time and temp are easy to set. Not to loud, honestly not any louder than a running fridge, you get used to the noise and it's really clear when it shuts off, you notice the silence. Beeps 3 times when it's done. I've only had it for 3 days, if I think of it in a year I'll leave another review. Worth the money.
2 Week Update. I have one complaint, the knobs are tiny, hard to grip. I might buy wider ones if I get really motivated about it. But really, that's my only complaint. I've been running this dehydrator basically non stop for 2 weeks. I've made salmon, beef, and mushroom jerky. I plan to make venison jerky tomorrow. I've powdered lemons, limes, oranges, tomatoes, Sriracha, sardines, red miso, black garlic, and sweet peppers. I've made instant white and wild rice. And SOOOO much more. I'm really running it all the time, I think it's been off for 30 hours since I got it.
4 month update.....I used it as a pancake warmer today for Easter breakfast. I can only make 1 pancake at a time, so I set the dehydrator to 130° and kept the pancakes warm until they were all ready. First time we've all eaten pancakes at the same time. ???? Multitasking product!
Hey I remembered! 1 YEAR REVIEW. Buy it. Really. Buy it. I run it daily, I always have something in it. I’ve used it to proof bread, make yogurt, keep pancakes warm, powder food, jerky, dog treats, fruit roll ups, and tree ornaments(lime slice garland). Seriously, buy it. Still haven’t got motivated about changing the nobs, still on the list though. The plastic shelves are in great shape, no discoloration. I have run them through the dishwasher, but I usually just rinse them. They wipe clean so easily. I bought grill mats to use as dehydrator mats, much cheaper and I was able to cut them to the perfect size (take a lighter to the edges to clean them up). I was so afraid I would never use this, but I shocked my lazy self by using it more than anything else in my kitchen, buy it. I have folded it back up once, ONCE, it’s always in use.

It arrived with no physical damage. However, when I tried to dehydrate bananas, I found that after 10 hours that the heating element wasn't working. I inspected it further, and noticed that the unit didn't produce any heat even on the highest settings.
Since contacting the company, they sent me a new unit to swap with the unit Amazon sent me next day. The new unit they sent me exceeds my expectations for a dehydrator that folds up to a third of its operating size. During the holiday I have since used the unit to dehydrate bananas and peppers, and it works really well.It's really nice not to have to compromise on quality with this compact dehydrator.
I really wish that I had ordered the unit from the manufacturer instead of Amazon, for multiple reasons:
1. At the time of purchase they had a deal running where you get silicon mats with your purchase of the stainless steel version of the dehydrator. These will prove to come in handy for smaller chunks of veggies and sticky fruits.
2. Brod &Taylor has much better customer service than Amazon.
I you are looking to get into making your own spices, healthy snacks, or you just want to preserve some fruit that would otherwise spoil, I recommend this dehydrator. If you are not crunched for time, and don't need the satisfaction of next day delivery, check with their website. You are more likely to get some extra goodies with your purchase, and trust me you would definitely rather deal with their customer service than that of Amazon.

I really wish that I had ordered the unit from the manufacturer instead of Amazon, for multiple reasons:
1. At the time of purchase they had a deal running where you get silicon mats with your purchase of the stainless steel version of the dehydrator. These will prove to come in handy for smaller chunks of veggies and sticky fruits.
2. Brod &Taylor has much better customer service than Amazon.
I you are looking to get into making your own spices, healthy snacks, or you just want to preserve some fruit that would otherwise spoil, I recommend this dehydrator. If you are not crunched for time, and don't need the satisfaction of next day delivery, check with their website. You are more likely to get some extra goodies with your purchase, and trust me you would definitely rather deal with their customer service than that of Amazon.

The unit looks great! It is versatile and it works. It does actually reach 167 F!
But it is way too noisy. I have my headphones on and I can still hear the oozing and whistling of the fan!
There is no way to shut the fan off if you want to use it as a fermentation station.
The power cord was way too short. I was lucky I had an old cord that worked otherwise I would have returned it.
All in all, if you have a small apartment, the noise of the fan will be unbearable.
I do not recommend this product for the price.

I really do love my dehydrator. I do wish the holes in the trays were a bit smaller as to not allow smallish food bits to fall through. Also, I'm not sure the temperature of 165°f actually gets there. I have used two different thermometers to test it and both thermometers only got up to 150°f with the dehydrator empty. One thermometer was an oven thermometer and the other was a thermometer used to temp food items. Neither time was there food in the dehydrator which I know would naturally bring the temp down a bit until fully dried.
I do however love how easy it is to store, use, and clean! The only time I use it at such a high temp would be for jerky and I can just finish that off in the oven if I am worried about it.
One other issue was that the doors are a little uneven and they said I can fix that using a knob near the door but, I have yet to find said knob. It does not effect the usage of the dehydrator in anyway. Just annoying to my eyes.
I did contact Brod and Taylor about the temp issue and they were quick to respond but, I'm not sure how helpful they really were. I know this was a long review and if you made it this far I just want you to know that it is worth buying especially if you don't have a lot of storage space for when you are not using it. I love this thing. Space saver for sure compared to other dehydrators and it’s very easy to clean. I opted for the stainless trays and food pops right off leaving very little residue. From jerky to apple chips and other dried fruits it been fun. I’d suggest buying dehydrator sheets or wax paper line the bottom to make clean up even easier. Plus you can use them for roll ups.

Very easy to set up and fold down storage. I bout it this summer to dry my apricots. I think I got around six 3.5 pound bags of cots. so gooood. I think each tray took around 20-22 hours. I am planning on doing other fruits.

I like the stainless steel shelves and the amazing folding ability of this dehydrator! Fantastic design. Works really well, has variable temp settings including low enough to dry mushrooms perfectly. Made delicious dried apples, persimmons, bananas, and fruit rollups. Good color retention in the fruit. Lots of shelf space. Until my next harvest from the garden, it's tidily folded up on a shelf, along with the thin zippered pack of shelves. I'm eager to try drying flowers and herbs and even some garden veg. Wonder if it would help the next time one of us drops a cell phone in water?

There is so much room to dehydrate so many things. The easy to read and use controls makes it a breeze. The hardest part is now just the waiting. The fact that we can fold it up when we're not using it makes it even better as we don't have a ton of counter space.
We've already done beef jerky, salmon jerky, and raisins. Our next project is to try pineapple.

I was hesitant about spending this much money on a dehydrator but it was well worth it I love that I can fold it up and put it away and it's a nice touch that they supply a zippered bag to store the shelves in.

It arrived with no physical damage. However, when I tried to dehydrate bananas, I found that after 10 hours that the heating element wasn't working. I inspected it further, and noticed that the unit didn't produce any heat even on the highest settings.
Since contacting the company, they sent me a new unit to swap with the unit Amazon sent me next day. The new unit they sent me exceeds my expectations for a dehydrator that folds up to a third of its operating size. After using this 5-6 times now to make chicken jerky for my dog, I can say I highly recommend it.
The collapsible design is great for storage. The metal grids come in its own zippered pouch to keep everything neat and clean. The front of the unit has a very easy to read display, and intuitive controls to dial up the temperature and time needed (it will automatically shut off after the requested time, which is nice).
Admittedly, it is a little noisy (it's not so bad that it drowns out a television or anything, so I don't mind). It takes a little longer for a batch to dry than my older unit, but that might be because, when unfolded for use, it has 1.5 times the capacity of my older one too. The one downside that is a bit of a bummer is the relatively short power cord (it's probably 2-3 feet long), which limits where you can set it up on your kitchen counter.
However, the benefits greatly outweigh the slight inconvenience. I would recommend this unit.
