Answer: I just let it burn out. It will smoke for six hours fully loaded. If you know you only want a couple of hours of smoke stuff some aluminum foil in first. This way the pellets are at the open end and will light easier.

Yes it seems all the pellets would just fall out and some do but for the most part the pellets just sit in the tube and their shape seems to lock them pretty well. I’m speculating here but if there were a cap it would make lighting the pellets fairly difficult. Using a propane torch is recommended. The tube would get pretty hot after burning 10 minutes making putting on a cap tricky.

Answer: When you are cold smoking, you don't want the heat. The "grill" is simply a vessel in which to hold the smoke. If you are using the tube to add smoke flavor to food and grilling I typically add the smoke flavor in the same way, cold smoke for the flavor and then finish by cooking with the heat from the grill. You can have the tube in with the grill fired up but keep it away from the fire of the grill or all of your pellets could burn up from the flame impingement adding a lot of heat but not so much the smoke.

Answer: Sometimes bad pellets/wood is the cause. Sometimes it's user error. Start with the best wood you can find, it's #1 nono to get the wood that is cheaper....then fill the tube up about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way. Then get a butane torch and light it till it catches fire. You want it to smolder red and gray. Then it is 100% lit and will burn for hours.
Answer: I have had excellent results when I use a torch and get a full fire burning out the top for at least 10 min. I light on the top, but also run the torch around the sides about an inch below the top of the pellets and get a good fire going. I love my smoker.

Answer: I’m not sure but perhaps the pellets weren’t lit up enough. The top part has to be on fire for a bit before you blow out the flames and put the tube on its side. I had a little trouble the first time I used it.

Answer: I have had very good luck with my smoker tube but I think the type of pellets makes a difference. I got good results with all pellets except cherry. They didn't burn very good. The rest were great (apple, hickory, pecan) the smoke lasted about 5 hours and I did mostly cold smoking. I use a butane torch to light the pellets and get them good and hot and let them burn for about 5 minutes before blowing out the flame and getting good smoke. I hope this helps....

Answer: Doesn’t appear to need washing. Pretty much everything is reduced to ash that just easily dumps out. In my experience, no creosote or other resins don’t accumulate, they just burn away. The metal does discolor from the heat of the burning pellets but doesn’t in any way effect it’s performance.

Hot Smoking is performed at temperatures that cook the meat whilst flavoring the meat with smoke. Cold Smoking involves preserving the meat by long term smoking from 1 to 30 days. Key aspect is the temperature needs to be 86° Fahrenheit.

I will say, last time I used it I had gotten over confident and didnt check it for a while (it had worked so well every time) it had went out, and since I was only smoking chicken wings. Answer: I don't think there would be any problem in filling it part way. Make sure the pellets are filling the tube and not spread along the bottom. I've found using a propane torch to light them works best and there shouldn't be any problem lighting say half way down the tube. Personally as cheap as pellets are I wouldn't mess with trying to burn half a tube.

I ignited mine with my weed torch and got it flaming for 5 minutes. Blew the flame out, placed in center back of grill. Works for me, couldn't be happier.

I found others out there like me that have the common complaint about pellet smokers not producing enough "smoke taste" for their liking and I was no exception to this. I gave this smoke tube a try and it was perfect for what i needed! My only complaint would be the lack of instructions, mainly it would have been nice to know that I'm not to fill it to the very top with pellets. It needs to have about an inch of space left open at the top to properly light and stay lit for the it to work/breath for the pellets. Once I figure that out it worked great!

Also if you stack the pellets all the way to the top, you'll expect some to fall out onto your grates when you set it down. Would have been nice if there was a way to cap the top to prevent the pellets from spilling out.
One tube full of pellets got me about 3.5 hours of steady smoke.

Traeger is a very good smoker but not enough of the “bite” for brisket. This item adds a larger smoke ring and lets you choose a wood you love. I layered wood chips then pellets, wood chips then pellets. Lasted 2-3 hours ~ I did it trice. I used oak chips, plum chips, apple chips, and hickory pellets in between. Overall brisket was an 8 or 9 / a 10/10 only happens once in a blue moon with a pellet smoker !!

What I don't like about it is the open end at one side of the tube with no cover. The open end you will not see in any of the photos.
That probably is nit-picky, but the item looks and seems incomplete. They give you 2 S hooks to hang the unit--but you can't use them because one side is completely open and all your pellets will fall out.
UPDATE, I just used it--works perfect!
It burns completely through the entire tube! I wouldn't have thought so by looking at it, but don't be afraid to buy it, you won't be sorry.

I've used on the grill and in smoker box (cuts down on opening to add chips).
A bit hard to get pellets going - a torch is the way to go as I used dessert torch and the pellets went out a few times. Finally I stuck in bottom of smoker on the burner - it worked and had wonderful smoke for hours.
I can't wait to try smoke cheeses.

As a fairly accomplished home cook and occasional caterer (for select friends only), I enjoy making incredible food.
I started experimenting making Lox, or Gravlax, after a recent trip to Seattle, having been impressed with the variety and selection of fish products during our trip.
Having hot-smoked meats, foul, ribs and fish in my Weber Smokey Mountain (WSM), I was up to the task to expand my cooking and cold smoke was the next challenge.
I knew my WSM would generate too much heat for a cold-smoked lox so I started my research for a cold smoke generator.
And friends, this one is it!
For my lox experiment, I bought a sack of maple wood pellets and loaded them into this smoke generator. Filling the tube around half full and then leveling it to evenly disperse the pellets into the tube.
To light the pellets, I placed the open end of this smoke generator on my grill's side burner and left it there for a few minutes until i had a nice smoke stream emanating from the holes in the tube.
I then moved the smoke generator to my cold Weber grill grates (see pics) and placed my brined salmon (atop a cooking rack for maximum air/smoke circulation) onto the grill grates and covered the grill hood.
Basically, the desired method for cold smoking is to capture and encapsulate your foods that you seek to cold smoke in as small a space as possible to allow the cold smoke to wash over and bathe your food in smoke. Doing this is what imparts the smoke flavor, all without adding heat and cooking the food you're smoking.
I kept the smoke generator tube around 10 inches away from the salmon and let the smoke waft all around it for 90 minutes.
OH MY GOD! The flavor on this salmon was incredible and the amount of smoke generated was PERFECT!
If you're seeking a quality, well made cold smoke generator, this unit is IT! Look no further.
Now if you're going to use Traeger or other pellet types to create smoke from, you'll need to get those pellets smoking. A gentle match will not work. You must burn/ignite them for a few minutes until they start to smolder.
You can use a torch burner or a grill's side burner but budget at least a few minutes to get those pellets smoking.
Once lit, your pellets will gently burn through the tube, consuming/igniting the remaining pellets inside the tube.
And that folks it your lesson in how to get this tube to be the perfect cold smoke generator.

I thought I'd be able to fill this half way if needed but I find it's almost impossible to get it started when less than full. However, when full, it starts easily with a propane torch and will smoke for about 4 hours. If you want additional smoke flavoring it definitely does that without adding any creosote bitter taste.

This is a great addition to our smoker. This adds additional smoke and also allows me to cold smoke as well. Cold smoking cheese, fish and ham to make Tuscan Prosciutto. This simple to use tube makes our smoker more flexible and adds great smoke flavor to our gas grill too. I really did not like out gas grill until I bought this. Now real charcoal taste through the smoke this makes. It lasted over 8 hours. I think if I were to pack it tightly, I could get 12 hours out of it. Amazonian Personian : Heat Gun is best tool to start this
It's a great addition to any grill or smoker. I looked up good ways to start this smoking, and people suggested 2 ways. Either butane torch, or heat gun. I tried several times with a butane torch, and it was very difficult to keep it going. I believe it got the pellets too hot and burned away everything that could smoke. The heat gun on the other hand worked perfectly 1st try. I bought the cheapest Wal-Mart heat gun I could find and it took about 1 minute to ignite the pellets, 10 minutes of burning, the I blew out the fire. It smoked for HOURS!

Amazon Customer : Works as advertised
Works exactly as advertised, although it does seem a little high-priced for what it is. Complaints that I see in these reviews are from people who simply don't wait long enough before extinguishing the Flame.
Spend a full minute with a handheld butane torch lighting the pellets then let it burn or 10 minutes before blowing out the Flame. Smokes for about 4 hours.

This thing is awesome! Doesn't burn as long as they say it does but I think that's due to it being close to the fire box. I was honestly about to get rid of my pit boss because the smoke flavor just wasn't there. This made a huge difference in flavor, used the tube twice per cook on a pork shoulder and ribs, they came out perfect. Before it would've been a light, almost undetectable smoke flavor. I had also raised my water tray up a few notches and put tin foil over my vent to allow less air/smoke to escape.

I love the pellet smoker that I've had for about 6 months. The precise temperature control and many other ease-of-use features are great. However, I missed the strong smokey flavor that I used to be able to get when I used other smokers that allowed me to put on as much wood as I wanted and to keep the smoke going constantly. This product completely solves that problem, and the food is great again. It's very easy to use.... just follow the directions. I used wood pellets in it, and I got five hours of continuous smoke from it. Before I bought this smoker tube, I thought that the great reviews must have been an exaggeration, but they are not. I just bought a Traeger and was sadly disappointed in its ability as a smoker; advertised as a smoker but it is definitely not. I was looking for something that could help produce more smoke in my Traeger so I could get that smokey flavor into my meat. I bought two of these items and run them simultaneously in my Traeger and it works amazing!. Brisket, chicken, ribs all now have that smokey flavor that should come with a smoker. They are also small enough since they are a tube to be easily place in the back so they do not take up too much valuable real estate of the smoker. Recommendations if you have a small smoker 1 is fine. I have the larger version of the Traeger so two are required for the larger volume of the smoker. Highly recommend this item

Tube seems to work great so far. I haven’t used to actually smoke anything yet, it’s still too hot outside right now. I did do a test ru though, it lights quite easily and gives off the perfect amount of smoke without excessive heat. Looking forward to doing some cheese this fall.

What an amazing and wonderful smoker. After 20 years in Texas , you learn smokers and how to use them. This little tube gives me the big Texas taste out of my lil baby Weber . Right here on a deck in Maine. No midnight alarms . No waiting. In a pinch , heavy duty aluminum foil will tamp it down and secure your smoke. Just fantastic and can’t believe I went this long without one. Just a terrific product.

This is a great addition to our smoker. This adds additional smoke and also allows me to cold smoke as well. Cold smoking cheese, fish and ham to make Tuscan Prosciutto. This simple to use tube makes our smoker more flexible and adds great smoke flavor to our gas grill too. I really did not like out gas grill until I bought this. Now real charcoal taste through the smoke this makes. It lasted over 8 hours. I think if I were to pack it tightly, I could get 12 hours out of it. I highly recommend this tube to anyone looking for an inexpensive way to add smoked flavor to your food. Easy to use, clean and store.

I bought this to add some smoke to my gas grill. I have a pellet smoker, and I don't think this would replace that, but it's a great way to cheaply and easily introduce some smokiness to what you're cooking on the gas grill. A full tube burns for a couple of hours. I definitely like the shape of this one. It doesn't roll around.

It’s kind of fun (you get to play with fire), provides a lot of smoke, and burns for a good four hours (which is about as long as meat will benefit from smoke). I fill it full of wood chips (and some pellets to fill in the spaces between the chips), light with a propane torch, let it burn for about 7-8 minutes, and lay on the cooking grate. Voila!

I just bought a Traeger and was sadly disappointed in its ability as a smoker; advertised as a smoker but it is definitely not. I was looking for something that could help produce more smoke in my Traeger so I could get that smokey flavor into my meat. I bought two of these items and run them simultaneously in my Traeger and it works amazing!. Brisket, chicken, ribs all now have that smokey flavor that should come with a smoker. They are also small enough since they are a tube to be easily place in the back so they do not take up too much valuable real estate of the smoker. Bought this to supplement the smoke from my wood pellet smoker. Couldn't be happier with the results after the first use. My smoker grilling surface is a bit small; but, this product is compact and can be placed on an outer edge of the grill with good effect. First effort was with shrimp and I'm here to tell you, it turned out great (and was spouse approved). Also worked well on veggies (asparagus, zucchini and squash). You'll get about 4 - 5 hours of smoke from the fully loaded tube. This product is a very good buy.
Renaissance Man : Awesome for clean smoke
I have been using wood chips for years, with my gas and charcoal grills. I have never been satisfied with the amount of smoke that I get out of the wood chips, either soaked or dry. After purchasing this smoke tube, I am absolutely overwhelmed as to what I had been missing over the years, by not using wood pellets. After purchasing the cheapest wood pellets that I can get my hands on, it’s easy to fill the tube with either one kind two kinds or as many flavors as you want wood pellets, with different smoke combinations. I put the tube in the gas barbecue up under the burner, and I get smoke within five minutes, that lasts approximately two hours. During those two hours, the smoke is very intense, and imparts the smoke into the meat that I am barbecuing. The pellets burn completely, and leave very little fine ash behind, which makes cleaning the grill a lot easier. For my cold smoker, I ordered the 6 inch version of the smoke tube, so that the tube would fit under the meat in my cold smoker. I fire the pellets in the tube up with a propane torch, prior to putting the tube into my cold smoker. That way, very little heat transfers to the product, such as eggs, oysters and cheese. I am very satisfied with this product.

This pellet tube works just as well or better than the more expensive name brand one. The design of pretty much all of these is the same and its a simple concept. This particular pellet tube works fantastic and gives me 4-5 hours of continuous smoke when I fill it up with pellets. I dont bother with using a torch to light it or any kind of accelerant, I just use a $10 heat gun and hold it on the end for about 60 seconds and it lights all at once with a Woosh! Then I keep it standing up and let the flame burn for about 10 mins, blow it out and put it in my smoker. Couldnt be easier.
PismoPat : Hard to light without a tourch
This was very hard to light using good quality pellets and our gas range. I don't have a torch, so I could not light it as shown on the instructions. It kept going out. Then it got wet with pellets in it and they turned to something like concrete. Ended up throwing it away. If the bottom came off, it would really help with cleaning.

When this arrived I inspected everything and was very happy of the quality of the items. I loaded it with pellets and began smoking cheese. This is a great job and everyone raved over the different cheeses that we smoked. How I got along without this for so many years is beyond me. As I write this we are smoking more cheese to give away this Christmas season.

This smoking tube is easy to use and a lot of fun. Have you ever wanted to cold smoke? Smoke some cheese? Well now you can. Just read the instructions and buy smoking pellets and not chips. I messed up the first time I used this and bought chips and not pellets and could not get it to work. After realizing what I had done I went back the the store got the correct pellets and went to cold smoking some cheese. This tube puts out minimal heat and maximum smoke. You will not cook anything with this but you will achieve a great flavor. The tube last about 4 hours if completely full.

I was honestly apprehensive about buying this product thinking it would not produce good results. I, in good faith, bought two of them and tried it for the first time a few weeks ago. Very easy to load with chips and pellets, started it with a BernzOmatic torch and off to the races. Burned at an acceptable rate and produces ample smoke. Overall a very good supplement if additional smoke is needed. A quick tap and swab with a bottle brush and it was super clean. I hear people use these for cold smoking and based on my experience so far, I think it would work well in that application. The next test will be when I smoke more of my salmon and hopefully this will be a great aid in my quest to always produce amazing smoked salmon. Good Luck!

I like to occasionally cold-smoke in my smoker and in the past I've used a pellet tray that was 'maze like' in function. It never really worked that well. So my expectations were rather low for this pellet smoking tube. Holy Cow was I wrong -- this thing was awesome. I was able to smoke about 4 to 5 pounds of assorted cheese with the tube about half filled with pellets (stuff bottom with tinfoil and fill the rest of the tube with pellets). Amazing, amazing amount of smoke. Smoked for 2 hours and let cheese rest for about 2 weeks. Soooooo good!

I bought this to add some smoke to my electrc smoker, and also be able to use my propane grill as a smoker. It does both and really produces A LOT of smoke. The only reason I didnt give this a five star rating is the fact that you have to really work to get this thing going with a propane lighter if you want it to work. if you put it in your electrice smoker make sure it is right on the heating coils or it wont work.

OK, I used to use wood chips in my smoker but now with this, I add the pellets, light it and let it burn for about 5 minutes then blow it out. I can place it in my smoker below the meat with the gas flame on to provide the appropriate temperatures, and this puts out smoke for at least 5 hours. Most of my smoked meats were done in about 4 so I just let it burn itself out and I'm estimating it lasted for another hour. Anyway, this is perfect. I had one of those boxes before and it was totally useless. But this, it really works. I've used it three times so far and have zero complaints.
choc : Great way to smoke cheese and meats
I've used on the grill and in smoker box (cuts down on opening to add chips).
A bit hard to get pellets going - a torch is the way to go as I used dessert torch and the pellets went out a few times. Finally I stuck in bottom of smoker on the burner - it worked and had wonderful smoke for hours.
I can't wait to try smoke cheeses.
GeeManTex : It ok, but not what I expected
This thing is very thin metal and the holes clog easy from the drippings. Yes, I know it is not supposed to be under where it can get dripped on, but there is only so much room and being able to hang with the S hooks. I don't see this thing lasting due to the thinness. Cleaning the ash from inside is a pain and the brush that comes with it is useless. The bristles are not stiff enough.
I ordered a different one today that is states it is thicker (Heavy Duty 20 Gauge Stainless Steel) and has a completely different hole design. We'll see how it works out.

I have never used a smoker like this before. I found it easy to use but not that easy to clean. I think it was tough to clean because I spent 8 to 10 hours smoking salt. I had to reload the tube once during that time and then let it go until that was gone. I've only tried this one time. I put chocolate and salt on to cold smoke. Both turned out great. I started with chocolate and one tray of salt for 2 hours, then I removed the chocolate and added a second tray of salt. The picture of chocolate is so you can see how nice the smoke was.

Love the Traeger my father bought me for Christmas. I BBQ and my only issue is the Traeger does not produce a lot of "smoke". Reservedly, I tried this. Not a fan of adding chips in a hot box on the grill. However, the tube was perfect. It smoldered for a full 4 hours+. It was light and white, perfect amount. I ignited mine with my weed torch and got it flaming for 5 minutes. Blew the flame out, placed in center back of grill. Works for me, couldn't be happier.
jeremy kent : Best way to enjoy tasty smoked animal!
This turned my little gas grill into a proper smoker. I was sceptical at first but my desire for beautiful tasty smoked animal overwhelmed my desire to save some cash. It's a bit difficult to light the pellets with a lighter but worth the effort. For a nice slow cook I recommend lighting one burner on low and putting your meat on the opposite side and put the tube in the middle. Baste regularly and enjoy!

I've tried a couple of cold smoke methods, ruining a cheeit load of eggs and cheese. This tube fixt everything. Ya fill it, ya light it, ya leave it to do its job, ya smoke perfect cheese. Don't understand the silicone basting brush that comes with it, but now I own two basting brushes. Well build, should even be able to stand up to my abuse. It won't roll around like the round units, and comes with hooks to so you can hang the also hang the mother. Not to mention it was less expensive than most of the others. Quick and easy if ya don't wanna get your big smoker out...lay it all on a sheet pan and throw a box over it. Burns pellets, small chips, even dust (from the bottom of the bin) I love it!
