This reel was easy for my husband to add to my pole. It’s suggested for medium fishing use. It’s smaller than I thought it would be but it actually did a really good job when I took it for a spin. It’s a smooth cast and reel. It didn’t lock up when I caught a fish at all. It seems like it’s better quality than the price. I definitely recommend it.

Quantum, a division of Zebco, makes this fine reel as the latest addition to their line of casting reels. This is the Quantum TH100S, also called the Quantum II Baitcasting Reel. It is a quality baitcasting reel manufactured with a graphite frame and sides and containing eight ball bearings. This reel has Quantum's DynaMag Cast Control, which uses magnets to adjust the casting tension. The reel also has an adjustable pointer at the hub end of the take-up handle that can be pointed to the line weight you have in your spool, a handy little trick.

Few resources can be found on the web for how to use this reel. See the video I've included for more on the features and operation of this reel, including how to remove the spool to insert new line.

Instructions for use of the spool tension knob are these: "When using a baitcast reel, the spool tension knob must be adjusted properly to allow peak casting performance. To properly set the spool tension, perform the following procedure: a) With line, lure and rod assembled, hold the rod at a 45º angle. b) Press the thumb bar while holding the spool with your thumb. c) Finely adjust the spool tension knob until the lure slowly descends to the ground as thumb pressure frees the spool. The spool should stop at the instant the lure touches the ground."

A fine reel by a known manufacturer, this lies at the high end of Quantum's baitcasting offerings.

Northern Lights : Replaced older spinning reel.

I've used the same spinning reel since the 90's and it's always worked well for me, but I felt like it was time to try something a little different.
I haven't gotten to use this reel for actual fishing yet (I've recently discovered fly fishing and right now I'm kind of obsessed with it) but I wound this reel with 6 pound line and a lead weight, and practiced casting in my driveway.
There's a bit of a learning curve, but I think I've got it down now. Practicing casting was quite enjoyable and I'm looking forward to going to the lake soon.
