Okuma Trio baitfeeder
Performance
The Okuma Trio Baitfeeder Spinning Reels feature Okuma's patented simple baitfeeder system. The rear of the reel features a switch that fully disengages the gears and drag system. There is a secondary micro-click drag system that controls how freely the line is made available to the bait, preventing line overruns. Biting fish are allowed to move freely, while total control is still maintained over the line and reel. With just a single turn of the reel handle the baitfeeding system is disengaged and the drive and drag systems are re-engaged.
Techology
The Trio Baitfeeders feature Okuma's Crossover Construction technology. This technology utilizes lightweight graphite construction that is bolstered with solid aluminum in all the right places. This results in a lightweight comfortable reel. The Okuma Trio Baitfeeder Spinning Reels include all of the signature strength and smoothness features that are a signature of the Trio series of reels.

Questions about Okuma Fishing Tackle Trio Standard Speed Bait Feeder Spinning Reel
Q:
How do these compare to the avenger models?
Answer: I have the 30 and the 40 now if your going for something really big get the 55 but to the Avenger it is by far the top dog it is so much smoother and it can take braided line now if you want to put mono on it go with the Avenger but I recommend the Trio there is not a flaw in it.... Highly recommend spending a lil more for the Trio I have 28lb braid on the 40 and 15lb braid on the 30 .. 5-7 med ugly stik G2X with the 30 and 6-0 med on the 40
Q:
Size of the seat?
Q:
will this fishing reel be ok to use on the gulf coast (salt water)? fishing for Pompano
Answer: Yes , this reel can be fished in fresh or in salt water. Make sure to rinse with fresh water after using the reel in salt water to prolong the life of the reel.
Answer: I had this reel. It was ok. It ended up falling apart about a year or 2 after i got it. The drag tensioner fell off.. i used it for saltwater also. Big snook, cuda, kings... its a cheap reel, and not worth the money. But it does look cool. Thats about it. Id get a shimano sahara or a penn battle for about the same money. Or step up to the 150 range and look at penn conflict or shamano baitrunner. I personally get shimano stradic ci4. But thats about 200$ plus range. But quality gear lasts forever.
Answer: Yes it is a great reel.
Answer: Yes, it's a very good reel, I've used it since a while.
Answer: yes it will be
Q:
does it come with an extra spool
Answer: No it doens't come with an extra spool...
Answer: sorry no it does not come with extra spool
Answer: Hi, they do not come with a spare spool
Answer: sorry just one spool
Answer: No just 1 spool
Answer: No
Q:
i need a drag knob replacement ?
Answer: order from okuma
Q:
i want a okuma model spinning reel that will accomodate from between 8 or 10 pound monofilament test line to around 18 or 20 pound test. what model do
Answer: I am using the BF 55, teamed with ugly stick Tiger LITE rod. I have 4 of them, all 4 has 20 lb. mono line and work SUPER EXCELLENT! I jerk bait, large top water poppers, and have casted and set for blues at night. Only freshwater. The reels work magnificently! The bait runners, zero problems. Remember on these reels, the 55s at least are a bit larger reel than you would expect. Not for a 1/8 oz. jig head and minnow but for a 15 plus deep diving crank bait, oh yea! If you want 8-10 lb. test, I would NOT recommend the 55. Kinda large for that.
Answer: If your using mono in 20# test your probably going to have to jump up to a 55 size reel in Okuma. That will allow you to hold roughly, depending on the reel, about 150-175yds of line. Good reels are the Trio 55 and the new Caymus 55.
Answer: I am using 15lb braided on a BF-30, exclusively in saltwater for over a year. The reel is great I will be purchasing a second reel soon. I catch small sharks as well as other fish in the 8 to10lb size without any sort of issue.
Q:
I can't find the line rating for any of these reels. Kinda helps with the reel you're interested in.
Answer: WE USE 15 LB LINE SHOULD BE IN THE LITERATURE?? JUST LOOKED AT THE LITERATURE, GIVES NOT RECOMMENDATION DOES MENTION 12 LB SO 10 TO 15 LBS SHOULD BE GOOD.
Answer: Yep. I think I went to okumas website and found the stats.
Q:
Do baitfeeders 30 and 40 have same size body but different sized spools or is trio bf40 a bigger reel alltogether.
Q:
How much drag dose this reel have
Answer: the max drag is from 18-22 lbs depending on the size.
Answer: It has a bunch. Using it for sripers in Sacramento river. No complaints
Answer: 20 lbs
Answer: as much as you need i have 3
Q:
Which model is the smallest to biggest?
Answer: Here are some specifications for you
Answer: This is a question for the manufacturer.
Q:
what size would be good for trout
Answer: Id say yes. Ive caught everthing from sharks on this reel to 1lb snappers. Very nice, id reccomend.
Q:
Which model is a good to pair with the surf rod lc-s-902h-1:9' and the lc-s-802m-1:8; currently i am using the ceymar cbf-40?
Answer: The Trio BF-40 up to a 65 would be a good size depending on how much line capacity you are looking for.
Answer: Dont buy this reel... thats the best one for that rod. Get a shimano baitrunner. I had this reel.. it fell apart. It does look nice. Ill give it that.. i gave it away a year after i got it. Thats how i felt about it.
Q:
What reel would you suggest for 50 lb braid and how many yards do you think would fit?
Q:
Line weight/capacity?
Answer: I have about 400 yards of 30 lb braid on mine
Answer: Don't know gave as a gift
Q:
Can anyone tell me the drag rating for this trio 55
Answer: The Trio 55 has a max drag of 20 lbs.
Answer: i dont know how to answer your question, but i do know that the rear drag ( the bait feeder drag on the back ) stopped being adjustable in short order, the front drag still works as does the rear drag, but the adjustment froze up. i switched to buying the coronado and it has held up better for the brackish water that i fish.
Q:
how many yards of 65 lb braid does the 80 hold
Q:
How bearings ?
Answer: Bearings are smooth. Great reel!
Answer: Great, very smooth. The drag system is incredible, I will be ordering another one soon.
Answer: I've purchased 2 of these and they have preformed very well. Would buy again if needed.
Q:
I want to use it for tuna fishing. Which model has the greatest line capacity and it has to have the "free swimmming" feature.
Answer: This reel will not handle tuna
Answer: Got free swim on it but ull need something tougher to handle anything over 70 pounds
Answer: you would be better buying a multiplier reel for hard fighting tuna.
Q:
How does this size compare to the Okuma Avender 40 with the bait feed??
Q:
where do i order spare drag knob ?
Answer: Each reel has a detailed schematic, so you can order that spare part direct from Okuma. Check out the customer service page on their website.
Answer: from okuma in california
Q:
How many pounds of drag
Answer: Per Okumafishingusa.com max. drag is 18#
Answer: 2lb-3lb
Q:
what size of reel would I need to troll with 14 lb fire line
Answer: The Trio BF-40 would handle that size braid well. don't know if you'd need a baitfeeder for trolling though. also, 14Lb for trolling is fairly light(I troll in the seas). Again the Okuma trio line is awesome, for larger I have Cedro and the lower end Coronado that I've has fantastic luck with.
Answer: I own a BF-30 and it was bigger than I thought, the 30 would be fine with 14lb fire line.
Answer: The best way to size a reel- to line size, is by the drag rating but the 40 sounds about right.
Answer: That isn't an answerable question, more importantly is the species of fish your planning on fighting and how they run/fight to ensure you have enough line to fight them.
Answer: I would go with a 60
Q:
Would this be a great reel for snagging paddlefish?
Answer: you dont need the baitfeeder feature for that, it is more for live bait fishing in my opinion
Q:
Is this reel saltwater safe?
Q:
Are they hiding the line capacity rating or isn't it on here?
Answer: The line capacity for the Trio BF-40 is 270/8 , 190/10 , 170/12 yds/lbs .
Answer: IT IS NOT INCLUDED??? MAY HAVE TO CONTACT OKUMA 10 TO 15 LB SHOULD BE GOOD
Q:
is the clicker as loud as the okuma avenger or softer/louder?
Answer: The bait feeder clicker is not loud it very low u can barely hear it, but other than that its a very good reel.
Answer: yes it is a bit louder
Answer: The clicker is a lot softer harder to hear but the bait runner is way smoother and easier to pull out you have to tighten it or when the fish hits it comes out so easy and fast it back lashes bit once you get its set right it is really a good reel I like it better and I have used a lot of the okumas and Shimano bait runners and this is by far the smoothest and most adjustable
Answer: It's softer
Answer: About the same maybe a little quieter
Q:
What is the capacity of the spool (line length) ? Thanks
Answer: Here are the mono line capacities for the Okuma trio BF 80
Answer: They are in yards, not feet: 420 yards of 15# mono/350 yards of 20# mono/260 yards of 25# mono
Q:
Is there a larger sizes
Product reviews of Okuma Fishing Tackle Trio Standard Speed Bait Feeder Spinning Reel
ALEKS : Five Stars
ok
glenn c. : Very different spool
The model I received has a different spool from the site picture. It featured an over whelming out of place aluminium red scheme spool, instead of the usual black plastic. I'm a bit dissappointed. I own both trio 30 and 40. I'm sorry but the whole reel look like the spool from another different reel snapped on, in relation of the black rotor and body.
Bandchamilton : One terrible flaw that ruined the entire reel!
This reel utterly failed me. I have been fishing for 26 years and I've never owned a reel that failed so catastrophically and quickly. I believe that the majority of this reel is well designed and could be a decent reel except for one major problem...the base. The place where the base/foot has two screws connecting it to the main body of the reel failed the first time I set the hook on a yellow fin tuna, a very small yellowfin about 10-15lbs. I have had $20 reels stand up to tuna that size. I was able to hand line the fish in so any reel in the 65 size should be more than capable of a fish that size.
The reel initially had the plastic piece that held the reel to the base pop off and fall to the deck, I figured, well I can make a new piece out of stainless to hold the reel together (I do a lot of metal fabrication and figured taking an hour to make a part is better than waiting for warranty coverage), when I unthreaded the two cap screws the were both very noticeably bent, so I bought new stainless machine screws to use. After making a new part and assembling the base back onto the reel I tightened the screws, as I tightened them (using only an Allen wrench and very little torque) the cast metal the base was made from broke into pieces around one of the screws (yes it was the proper size and thread pitch, I rebuild cars and their motors fairly regularly so I know my way around nuts bolts and screws, in fact I work professionally as a mechanic on nuclear reactors). At this point I had a day of fishing scheduled two days later, so no chance of getting a warranty replacement before my trip.
Now I'm out over $100 for a reel that caught 0 fish and required me to figure out other setups for 2 fishing trips. I'm not sure wether this is a fluke or more likely terrible quality control by okuma but based on this experience I will likely never buy a reel from them again.
I mean, honestly, who decides a reel designed for big fish should be held together by two small cap screws, right were the most torque would be felt while fighting fish. Should've realized how bad of an engineering flaw that was before I bought it but figured a reel that retails for close to $150 would have better engineering than most children could come up with...
Derek patterson : Very serious designer flaw
I loved everything about this reel up untill i realized a huge designer flaw that i circled in the pic they use two cheap skrews to hold the reel to the piece that slides in the rod like i said i circled it i was fighting a big sting ray and it broke and i had my drag very low it didnt break on the initial hit it broke oddly after i loosened the drag the skrews go through a very high strength steel and they are junk and skrew into plastic the quality of the reel itself is good but to do something that stupid makes no sense to me AND I PROMISE YOU IT WILL COST YOU A FISH
PMoua : Okuma Reel-bait runner
This Reel look and feel solid. Need to test it out this summer to see how it perform.
Yes, I would buy another one.
Tested it out this summer(June 9) to fall (Sept 29) 2017. Work well as ecpected, caught 7 Steal head Trout between 7 and 12 lb. 5 white fish 3-6 lb and 8 salmons between 12 and 20 lb. Still like new...very smooth and solid when retreiving and casting.

It is worth around $40.
Jonathan Andrew Taylor : Great Buy
Everytime I buy an Okuma product I'm always surprised at the quality you get for the price. The trio is no exception to this. First off the drag system is just amazing, extremely smooth, I was testing it out with a friend with my surf casting rig and had the dragged maxed. When we started to stress it the knot joining the braid to mono snapped (50lb mono to 80lb braid). Have brought it out a few times and cast beautifully, but the only problem is the baitfeeder clicker is almost non existent.
william fouts : nice reel, the only problem is bait feeder drag ...
nice reel , the only problem is bait feeder drag when set is bumpy when line goes out
Bob I. : Five Stars
Great, affordable reel.
Richard W. Blaylock : Okuma BF-55
I really like this reel. It's very well made and looks good too. I have not used a "Bait feeder" reel before and am looking forward to putting it into action. I was looking for a reel that wasn't too large nor small and this reel is exactly what I was after.
Amazon Customer : Only one season of use
I only got one full season (Spring 2015) out of this reel. Stripers run up the river from the end of March until June, after that I didn't use it. I took it out once this season a few weeks ago and the bait runner would no longer disengage. Thoroughly disappointed.
Amazon Customer : No tangles or bad spooling under stress
The reel met all expectation. Reeled in leopard sharks without trouble . No tangles or bad spooling under stress.
Mike : Five Stars
Great reel. Well worth the cost.
Huckleberry : 20lb line, rated for it
I love this reel, its the in-between reel of all the others, Perfect for pike and walleye, to big for trout, not big enough for musky, would be excellent for bass and 10=12lb. cats. I spooled with 20lb stren.. I have 2 of them. no problems with bait runner at all. I wanted a pike ,walleye, and medium cat reel, went to bass pro shop, never had anything of the size for continuous casting. This is the reel.

Amazon Customer : Four Stars
Yes
Alex von Buchwald : Light and strong
Without a doubt the best spinning reel that I have purchased. Lightweight, strong, the handle is extremely comfortable. I fish grouper, tilefish, halibut and torpedo sand perch with this reel. The only comment I have is that the alarm sound is very low in comparison with other reels I've ever had. Next year I want it in the season of wahoo, since I put 350 + yards of braided PowerPro 65 pounds, enough to battle it out with these fish. Highly recommended.
Update
It has been 8 months since the purchase and the red pin of the handle slipped and fell into the water. I sent two emails to the customer's service of Okuma, but I don't have any answer. Bad service technical Okuma, and seems quite bad to a reel that has that price to have such problems. One star to Okuma's service.
LEO : I like it, but it can not to catch big ...
It is light for me.I like it,but it can not to catch big fish for me.

SpyderGSX : Good reel
Great reel for the money, used for striped bass, and carp so far with no issues. Might consider a 50 series just to hold more line.

Okuma Trio BF-80, bought through Amazon Warehouse Deals. So far I have found nothing wrong other then a small tear in the box.
Have not had a chance to fish with yet, hence 4 stars. It will hold 300 yds. of Power PRO Braid 50 lb. test @ .36mm diameter.
Waiting for free time to hook into a big flathead & see how it performs.
