how is it weighted down? do you have to add weights?

Answer: Yes, you going to have to add some weigh. It's not high quality material so consider this a 1 time use type of deal.

The only thing I can think of that put these holes in it were the bluegills fins as they were looking for a way out. there was no current or debris where it was set out.

Answer: I’ve had no luck with a wolf yet but I caught 3 coyotes. I just used a handful of chicken beaks and in the morning there’s was a yote tangled up in the net. I love this thing. It catches rabbits real good too.

Answer: Yes it can be used at the ocean shore. I put sinker weights on the corners as the tide will pull and push on it. I carried out over my head into waist deep water and then dropped it down in the water. I then walked out to chest deep water and held the rope as the tide still would pull. You have to be patient and have the trap baited well to draw the minnows to the trap.

This minnow trap is extremely effective! I have used the traditional cylinder style for 30 years, and it has to soak for hours or overnight to catch any quantity of bait. This one works in 15-20 mins or less in most cases and catches large quantities of bait. I highly recommend!

Update: we have been through several of these traps. They only last 1 season or so because the salt water deteriorates the joints.

Before using, you have to make a slit in the mesh to open up the zipper area. I attach this net with a 15 ft string and it works great.

Pros: I get about 50 crawfish per hour in this trap in California, using anchovies and chicken liver as bait. That means, most trips = bringing home at least 1/2 - 3/4 full 5 gal bucket.

Cons: The material is made out of mesh, so if it lasts more than 2 years I would be a happy crawdad fisherman. There are small white zipties that hold the wholes next to each other together. After a while, replacing the zipties may be required. It also can't be thrown too far. The best way I've found to throw it is by holding the white clamp at the top and then tossing it gently making sure it sinks on the proper sides.

It seemed to be able to catch fish, but when it was picked up with 2 mullet in it, three of the arms that support the frame snapped...one time use sort of fishing net. would recommend a better version of this style. Do not buy this one though.

This product did not perform as advertised. It was too difficult to add and remove bait. The product was too lightweight and adding weight caused imbalance. Quite often, it folded too easily during handling. The only thing collected in the basket was jelly from bottom; no crabs, no fish, nada.

This is a well designed product that caught us lots of shrimp over the course of 4 days of use, if you use the right bait.
I was however extremely disappointed by the durability. After 4 days use in saltwater the metal structure is completely rusted and even with fresh water washing and use of lubricants didn’t stop fast corrosion. The metal will not even last weeks. Since the umbrella arms need to close and open for this trap to work and they don’t because it is all rusted, now it is useless after 4 days of use. Find other more durable solutions until they replace the metal with stainless steel.

Very simple and easy to use! Just took it to the lake last weekend, attached a rope to the net and threw it out. Checked net after ten minutes and had two blue gill inside. These might be better used in a lake where the water has no tide or movement. We tried them for crab and we knew they would be light weight, so we attached a heavy weight on the bottom so it would sink faster and stay on the bottom. It did sink, however it did not stay in place. It came back towards the rocky shore very quickly and it would collapse on itself like a flimsy umbrella in a wind storm. We did not catch any crab that day, although people just down from us did

I had to order a replacement for this net today after only 3 months of use. It worked well to catch bait fish, but the internal arms started rusting almost right away. I sprayed it down with fresh water after almost every use, but it just didn't last. The design seems to work well, just need better materials.

This was a piece of junk that got holes in it after 1st use. Don't waste your money here. I was using it in a still pond with no current and a fairly smooth bottom surface.
