I would consider this Hunter's Tail Fishing Reel to be a medium to light reel. It could be considered a "heavier" ultra light reel. It has a nice heavy bail which works smoothly and generally must be hand flipped back after the cast, not cranked back into position. This action is always better for a reel in any case. The reeling mechanism works very smoothly and has no play or loose feeling motion. That is what I found that I like the best about this reel. The tension is easy to set and the crank can be changed for either hand use. The crank handle is comfortable and the whole reel is very nice looking. Though the fish probably don't care. This is a very nice reel which I will use primarily on my bass or walleye pole. It would also be fine for pan fish on a light to medium pole.
Meijer Bjorn : Impressive reel for the price
I am super impressed with the quality of this reel for the price. The reel is super smooth. It is easy to operate. The disc drag is fine tuned and it has an anti-reverse switch. It is both metal and plastic, The plastic feels super strong and should hold up to normal use. The reel is meant for 12lb. Line and larger. It see it easily hold up to larger fish. This reel is hard to beat for the price.
Sylvain : bien
bien
sjjzjsjs : You het what you pay for!
I needed a replacement reel for my ultra light ugly stick. Saw this reel and thought....pretty cheap but looked fine for my needs........I was wrong!. I used this reel once and a week later it froze up and I noticed that the screws holding together the housing already started to rust. I had low expectations based on the price but this reel exceeded those expectations. This unit is garbage! save time and buy a higher end name brand reel......
Old Coast Customer : Attaches easily. Cast is smooth......
Hunter's Tail Fishing Reel is very smooth with a beautiful burled wood handle. It is nearly silent because the parts are made of metal and this makes it spin effortlessly. Casting is sure and quick stop does not foul your line. I removed my old corroded reel and attached this in under five minutes. I spooled on 15 lb. test in another couple of minutes. I am good to go. A great deal and I would recommend. I give it five stars for ease of attachment and smooth casting.
Vikki : bearings not working properly after 2nd use
Broke on my second use
Amazon Customer : Reel easily broke
The reel worked fine and smooth for about 3 months. I bought this reel last December 2018 as a Christmas present to replace a 30 year Zebco that finally gave out. Started to use it October 2019 for the first time and it just broke today reeling in a good size perch.
jorge artiga : esta muy bien es bien practico
me gustado mucho su calidad y su precio esta muy bien

Amy : Decent reel for the money!
I have used this about 3 times and for the $12 I paid, it’s great. It does the job but don’t expect a high dollar reel. It’s smooth and does decent. I was able to catch my personal best bass with this on the 4th cast!
CheeryToes : Well built, smooth cast and recall
It's a nice basic reel, that doesn't cost a lot of money and works well.
SharaNYC : Lite tackle reel
Great lite tackle reel. I needed something very light and small to catch bait and small fish. This reel worked beyond great. I have no issues with it so far. I do rinse it off lightly with fresh water after every use. Not sure about saltwater resistance, I’d keep it cleaned with freshwater. It has some drag for the size but not sure how it would hold up if occasionally get a bigger fish hooked. I got it for a really good price and for that I think it’s worth it.
PasoCreek : Nice reel
I fish with a Abdu Garcia reel that is red and black and although this is not the same quality it is a nice real and looks nice. Crank handle a nice touch.
⛵⚓Seas the Day⚓⛵ : Smooth Reel
We live near a lake and go fishing and boating during the summer. We’re always needing fishing items since we are a family of four.
This fishing reel is smooth operating. You can cast time after time without the fishing line messing up which is the number one quality I need in a fishing reel.
Parker-Moore Family : Nice and smooth
He loves it, but going to need a new pole apparently as he doesn’t want it on the pole he is currently using. It’s very smooth. We still have a few more months on the boat for fishing trips.
WIZARD D : Quality Made Reel
This reel is well balanced, well designed with quality materials, and durable. The drag is easy to set and has wide variability that is easy to adjust while fishing. Operation is extremely smooth with ball bearing drive. I highly recommend this light action reel!
Grandpa Wilbur : Too soon to tell but...
I have had not a chance to use this reel yet but it feels as smooth as or better than any other of 5-6 reels that I own. The only thing that might be improved is the bail flip-back when turning the handle after a cast. It is a little tighter than I would like but it will do.
Jim : Very smooth casting !!!
Very smooth casting reel and so far no problems !!! Great product for the price !!!
tiankong : Waste of money
Very poorly made. Not smooth at all
Storm the Penguin : Great action, works for a hobbyist
I'm just a part time hobby fisherman who goes when other friends drag them to go fishing. This reel works great for me. Great action, easy to use, easy to take apart. Everything I'm looking for in a reel.
Kristy Speers : Will buy again
Great for the money nice little compact reel. ????
Brian Mcfarlane : Finally got it - here's my first impression with tear down
Update:
I've had this for about a year now and I'm updating my review to a 3 star (3.5 if we had that option).
I took this out about 20 times so far and it's surprisingly held up great for the price that was paid. I didn't think it would but it did. After I greased it up and did some fine tuning from the start, it has been a good little reel.
It's smaller than my 4000 reels and it's more like a 3000, so I use it for smaller pond bass and trout fishing, freshwater, and have not gone after cats or carp, and it's actually pretty good and has held up quite well. I'm pretty careful with my stuff, though, but still, I thought it would be destroyed by now.
I bought a 7000 reel with the same brand model because I was quite surprised with this, which unfortunately turned out really bad and was returned. However this 4000 is still going strong.
By no means, though, is this suitable for salt water nor is this going to last a long time, but at the price point this is a pretty good option for beginners and those that want tackle that they don't need to be super cautious about. Again, get a size or two larger because these are on the small side.
Original: I ordered this over 2 months ago and finally got it.
It looks and feels cheap. The reel handle squeaks loudly and the gears are pretty loud. I decided to take it apart and take a look.
First, this reel is not made for saltwater. The main shaft bearing is not sealed whatsoever and it will freeze up on you if you use it in salt water condition unless you take it apart and rinse it off every time you fish. However, for freshwater it should be fine.
Second, it's not instant anti reverse. It will go about 1/4" or so before stopping.
I took apart the reel and as expected the gears are stamped cheap alloy of some sort and is definitely cheaply made.
I also found out why it makes all sorts of noise. The gears weren't properly greased. Whoever or whatever greased this missed about half the gears. After using some proper grease it sounds a lot better but still not that quiet. Of course, this is expected as it's a cheap reel with tons of tolerance on pretty much most of the reel.
The handle knob was also squeaking like an old hamster wheel. I found a little hole where it appears to allow the user to insert grease but that did not work. Fortunately, or unfortunately, there was about a 1/8" tolerance between the knob shaft and the handle so I inserted a needle with some grease and squirted some silicone grease in it and that did the trick, but the tolerance is so great that I have a feeling that this handle will break off after significant use.
Unfortunately, the handle knob is not removable as they are likely riveted on rather than using screws. With the handle made out of wood, this is likely the Achilles heel of this reel.
The last issue is the reel size. The reel holds a bit more than half the line compared to other 4000 reels that I have, even the really inexpensive Daiwa Samurai that I have holds about 40% more than this. This is another reason why it's not ideal for saltwater or for larger lakes or fish. For a 4000 reel, you want that line capacity for the bigger fish you're going after.
With all that said, there's a few things that I am impressed with.
Line management is really good for the price point. I have purchased other reels for this price that's far worse in line management than this. It puts line on without any issues and evenly, except for maybe 1/16" of both top and bottom which is slightly off.
It's definitely lightweight but not really better or worse than a lot of other reels at this price point.
It does seem to cast smooth and retrieve, after greasing it up properly, isn't half bad.
Drag is pretty nice. I took it apart and saw 3 (or maybe 4) white felt drag washers which was slightly greased. I spooled it up with 12lb mono and it seems to be OK. Not smooth, but can handle a lot of pressure before giving in.
For the price that I paid, five and change, this reel is good for local lakes, going after bigger bass, cats, and carp. That is, after you finish their job of greasing it up properly. I guess time will tell if these will hold up.
Overall I'm giving this a 2 star out of 5 given the current price point, not what I paid for, which seems like a promo price to get their name out. If it was half the price, or if they would fix some of these things mentioned it might be worth a 4 at best, but definitely not perfect.
Bottom line : you have better options, but by no means is it a horrible product.

Amazon Customer : Getting parts
Great for price but the handle fell off into the water. Screw must have come loose. How do I get a replacement handle and screw?
Ronnie G : Great product
Great product for price.
Ivan espinosa : No good
Se miraba de buena calidad pero se rompió muy pronto no aguanto ni 3 meses no good
Parker-Moore Family : Nice and smooth
He loves it, but going to need a new pole apparently as he doesn’t want it on the pole he is currently using. It’s very smooth. We still have a few more months on the boat for fishing trips.
peter lima : Good product at a good price
Works well, smooth action and durable. So far has performed to its expectations.
Ronnie G : Great product
Great product for price.
Great Cook, Great Cook : Only using this Reel now..Like it allot
I really like this fishing reel a lot. Was not hard to string at all, I used the 10lb line, and use it for trout fishing. When casting out it’s really smooth. Even though it is a little bit more heavier then other reels, I don’t mind. The craftsmen ship is very nice and I really like the colors and wooden handle. All around a very nice reel.
Foxy Roxy : Good inexpensive teel
Good little reel for the price
James A. Nichols : Works great
Nice smooth reeling motion. Casts great. Very well made reel. Works great. Very nice
MyPenName : Hefty reel
So far so good. Works like it should, with smooth movement. Feels solid and hefty like a good reel should.
Sanpete : Nicely designed and built
This has a fine, smooth feel that belies its budget price.
The main materials are metal and plastic. The gears are all metal, for better durability. The plastic is mainly in places that don't have moving surfaces in contact with each other, which includes the foot/arm that attach to the pole. That makes it lighter, and the plastic is surprisingly strong and rigid. It should perform well under normal stresses.
The disc drag is also smooth, and finely adjustable. And there's an anti-reverse switch.
It's easy to switch the handle to the other side, no tool required.
The reel says it accepts 180 yards of 12-pound line, 140 of 14, and 100 of 16. The box says it's 120 yards of 12, 150 of 10, and 210 of 8.
I can't find any warranty information. Hunter's Tail is a new brand (registered in July 2018) owned by Deta Technology, China.
This is model HB4000, by the way.
