What should you do if the wood dust keeps going out?
1. Light the wood dust with a small kitchen blowtorch. You need to burn it about 15 minutes (relighting as necessary during those time) to keep a flame going and gently blow it out. Less than 15 minutes it was not enough flame to keep going
2. If the wood dust is damp, a minute or so in the microwave can extract the moisture.
3. During cold smoking, make sure to check the food every hour by lifting the lid. This allows fresh oxygen to enter which will stimulate the smoking process.

Questions about Realcook 8" Cold Smoke Generator, Hot or Cold Smoking on Any BBQ Grill and Smoker, Perfect for Smoked Salmon, Cheese, Pork and More, Smoke Time up to 4-7 Hours
Q:
How much sawdust does it take to fill it? About how many cooks would a twenty pound bag last?
Answer: This holds about 1/4 lb of sawdust, so I would expect 18 hours of cold smoke
Q:
whats the best wood to use for salmon?
Answer: Hickory, Hickory, Hickory
Answer: applewood
Answer: Alder
Q:
Do you pack the sawdust in or keep it loose?
Answer: You do not need to pack it, I pour it higher than the edges then using a ruler or something with a straight edge, screed it flat
Answer: Did not pack it, just shake and pat down!
Answer: somewhat loose
Q:
What kind of blow torch should I get for this ? Butane or propane ? Does it change the flavor ?
Answer: The kind of torch won’t affect the flavor. You just need a torch that will light the wood dust. Once they are lit, it’s just burning wood dust and the torch is turned off.
Answer: No problem, you can use both torch. Never changes the flavor. Also you can use the short candle. Enjoy!!
Answer: I think either one should work. You just have to make sure that the embers keep going. I doubt that it would change the flavor. I used a propane torch and didn't taste anything.
Answer: Neither. Use a tea lite candle. Small candle that fits on that little platform.
Q:
Where is this made?
Answer: I’m not completely sure, but sadly I’m assuming China...
Answer: China
Q:

Q:
Does it really take 15 minutes with a blow torch to start this thing? It seems like in 15 minutes you would burn all of the wood dust.
Answer: In my experience, once you get it burning with a torch (about 15-30 seconds) you can let it go naturally - however, blow out any flame that might exist after 15 minutes...the idea is to get a good portion of the material smoldering so there's enough heat to continue around the whole path.
Answer: I tried to start the burn on this unit . it never kept burning , it just kept going out. I returned the product and ordered a slow electric cold smoker.
Answer: With a torch like 5 seconds! Just need to start the outside end.
Answer: I don't know about fifteen minutes but it does take several minutes to get a good steady burn going.
Q:
Where can I get Alder sawdust? I only see chips
Answer: I made my own and used cherry! Order online?

Answer: i don''t know whereto look for it. maybe a woodwoorkin shop near you
Q:
Will this work with the “saw dust” from a chain saw?
Answer: The problem is that a standard used chainsaw discharges bar oil with the saw dust, so you'd be smoking your food with, essentially, motor oil and wood. If you purged it maybe. In. But best to buy the cheapest chainsaw you can get, and use vegetable oil as the bar oil...
Answer: It works best with sawdust.
Answer: Don't use just any sawdust. Use sawdust intended for smoking food
Q:
Does this require wood dust to keep burning, or will it work with pellets as well?
Answer: It works best with dust
Answer: no it does not.make sure it is completely dry otherwise it wont burn
Answer: I personally use dust
Q:
Does the saw dust in the parallel channel catch fire as well or will this actually just burn in one lane or channel only ?
Answer: It burns one lane for the most part. there is a little bit of lane jumping happening. Starting the fire with a propane torch was easy. than k
Answer: After trying several methods to utilize the smoke generator I have found that if you start with a one layer bed of smashed briquettes, light them with a burnzamatic torch. Let the briquettes get good and glowing. Place the filled (pressed down with chips) smoke generator on top. It smokes very well.
Answer: It does burn as one channel. You'll need a tea candle under it to start.
Answer: Don't waste your money. This thing is a piece of junk .
Q:
To use, just put it in the bottom of a Weber, instead of charcoal, light candle, and let it go for 18-24 hrs? What is temp in the grill?
Answer: This product can adds awesome smoke flavor to everything, like meats, fishes, cheese and so on. It is perfect for cold smoking and hot smoking. But the product does not the heat source. For hot smoking, you still need the charcoal.
Answer: It’s a cold smoke generator,, what heat? This isn’t for BBQ.
Product reviews of Realcook 8" Cold Smoke Generator, Hot or Cold Smoking on Any BBQ Grill and Smoker, Perfect for Smoked Salmon, Cheese, Pork and More, Smoke Time up to 4-7 Hours
Alan G. : doesn't stay lit
Just got this, and tried it twice. One time I tried to get it started with the tea candle. The second time I used a blowtorch. Both times, it wouldn't stay lit. I don't know if perhaps I packed it wrong? Or maybe it needs some super special type of sawdust -- I used a bucket of smoking sawdust from Amazon.
John D. Pilla : Not sure why, didn't work for us
Does not work very well at all. Saw Dust purchased for it keeps going out.
Amazon Customer : No good
Didn't work with anything I tried
Handyman : Great smoke generator
I found that once lit it jumps over and the next coil lights .burn time is reduced
rainer wucherer : Five Stars
it works just great
Jason : Cold smoking tool
This takes quite a bit to start. Not only do I use a tea light candle, I also use a tourch to get it going. Once it is finally smoking on its own it will burn all the way through.
lynne g. : Worked like a charm!
It was exactly what I expected.
No assembly required and worked perfectly.
KO : Damage product
Second time in row product is damaged upon arrival.
ahmed : Not bad
Did the job but it is not easy to start it up it needs more time
LynnB : Does NOT stay lit or it burns up. NO SMOKE.
This does NOT stay lit. I've used it on at least a dozen cooks and it either does NOT stay lit and smoke, or it just burns up. It got so hot it burned the paint off the top of my grill lid. Had I thought about return, I'd have done so, but am now 5 days too late.
The zig zag square "maze" works so much better even though they both are the same concept.
Amazon Customer : Sturdy, works well.
Seems to be well made, the only change I’d make would be to make the handles folding.
It is very finicky about the size of sawdust used, the finer the better. To get the tea light to work I had to process the sawdust in a coffee grinder.
Scott D. Hanson : It really does work
I bought this item along with a bag of "Premium Smoker Sawdust" by The Sausage Maker. I tried every suggestion I could find and couldn't get this thing to burn. I was beyond frustrated until I read one comment here that I gave a try. I soaked pellets I purchased at WalMart (Pit Boss), then dried them and now I am 4 hours into a successful burn. Here is my recipe:
4 cups of WalMart Pit Boss pellets
3 cups of water
Put your two ingredients in a large mixing bowl or bucket - the pellets will expand greatly.
Stir until all the pellets are wet.
Wait an hour.
Stir some more and crush any remaining pellets with the back of a spoon.
Spread your mashed pellets onto a baking sheet that has a rim.
Place in a 175 degree (F) oven for four hours.
Turn off the oven and let the pellets stay in the oven over night.
The saw dust should be fully dry with very few pieces of pellet left over.
Fill your cold smoker and put the tea candle in place.
This recipe yields enough sawdust for 6-8 fills.
The photo is 3 hours and 45 minutes into a burn. Looks like I will get 9-10 hours of smoke.
P.S. I have now run this cold smoke generator three times. The first time it burnt for 9 hours and 20 minutes. The second time it jumped the walls about half way through and burnt up in 5 hours and 18 minutes. The third time it burnt correctly for 8 hours and 43 minutes. Wind speed is a big factor. If the wind is blowing outside your grill/smoker, then you will have a quicker burn. Fill this thing to the brim, then slam it down a few times on a hard surface. The sawdust will settle to about 85% full level. Leave it there. Top off the initial burn chute over the tea candle. It takes a good half hour to get it going if you are using the tea candle. For a quicker start use a butane torch, but is speed all that important if you are cold smoking a salmon for 24 hours? Load your smoker up with cheeses, pistachios and olive oil - especially olive oil.
Bob Arizona : Doesn't work as described! Doesn't work period!
After the product arrived I checked you tube for information on this product and guess what! Doesn't work. Even the reviewer couldn't keep it let. Burned about 25% of the way for him. Then I noticed there were half as many 1 star reviews as 5 star, so 11 out of 3 thought is was nonfunctional. I had trouble keeping it going for 20 minutes. Tried a fire starter, tea light and kitchen torch. The humidity here is around 15% so the wood dust is not damp. I have to completely unload my smoker to relight this POS. Hellooo Amazon, goodbye Real (no) cook. Hope the other two guys are happy with theirs!
Patrick McMahon : Works good with dry fine sawdust
I had been thinking about cold smoking some salmon when I saw this item and thought it was a great idea. I ordered one immediately and it arrived quickly. After curing my salmon I was looking forward to smoking it all day and having some great salmon to eat tonight. Alas that did not happen. I filled the smoker early this morning and got it started. I put on the salmon and checked about a half hour later. The smoke was out. And so it went the rest of the day. I would light it and soon it would go out. I gave up. Then this evening I had an idea that the problem wasn't with the smoker but with the wood. I got some dry oak sawdust from my wood shop and loaded up the smoker and lit it up. That was at 5:30 this evening. Now at 10:30 it is still smoking. I am assuming that the sawdust I ordered wasn't dry enough, although it seemed quite dry. The other thing is that the oak sawdust I used was much finer than what I ordered. I don't know if that is the difference, but I am going to find out. So, if you have problems with it going out it is probably due to the sawdust. Tomorrow I am going to dry the hickory sawdust I bought and see if it will smolder as well as the oak from my shop. (Next day.) The very fine dust smoldered, producing a nice plume of smoke for well over 6 hours until it was all consumed.
I tried several times to get the hickory sawdust to smolder but without success. I took several batches of the sawdust and dried it to extreme but no smoldering. The best answer is to use a real fine wood dust, like a flour consistency. I don't know where you can buy that but I will be using some from my wood shop.
Adam U. : Works excellent with DRY fuel.
This works perfectly and as described. You'll have success if you use DRY fuel. I used regular smoking pellets that I ran through an old high-speed blender to make my own saw dust.. I keep the pellets in the house and therefore out of any humidity. Pack it in nicely and then light it up with a good torch butane lighter. In my opinion this actually burned slowly and for much longer than I would have expected. I'm happy I made this purchase.
Daniel : will not stay lit
this thing does not work. i have now had to use 3 tealight candles in it the wood dust will not stay lit and the smoking stops when the candle goes out.
MandaPanda : Great smoker for fish!
My husband and I are very happy with this smoker! Now we can make amazing smoked fish right from home. Only advice I have for this is actual saw dust not the chips.... the chips are too big and never stay lite. We buy saw dust on etsy! Found out the hard way! Enjoy!
Amazon Customer : Very long smoking time with good sawdust
I bought this 13" smoker, because I already own several smaller ones. Those need more attention, because they finished too soon for my taste.
I tested it first time in a couple days ago, and it is STILL SMOKING! I have excellent dry beech wood sawdust with some juniper berry mixed with it. Looks like this fine dust will reach the 48 hours mark I had in my whislist (only 2 hours left).
I prefer beech wood, because it is not easy to find good quality cherry or hickory in this fine grade.
I recommend it for some long term cold smoking.
AMZ Contributor : Wonderful product & great value. Look no further!
Wonderful product & great value. Look no further!
Adramalech : Easy to use
Great tool for cold smoking. Super easy to use and get great results.
Bob Arizona : Doesn't work as described! Doesn't work period!

Jesse Martin : Absolute Garbage, buy ANYTHING else
This product is pure trash. I have literally never used it successfully. The whole tea light candle thing is just an abortion, lighting it with a blow torch like most of the internet recommends is no better. It never stays lit, I've tried every thing I've read on the internet about how to make this thing function - soaking the pellets, baking the pellets in the oven, using the candle, using the blow torch, letting it "burn" for a half hour before trying to use it.
Garbage, garbage, garbage. This product has so consistently not worked that I'm honestly questioning if any positive review about it is even real.
Updating January 12th 2021, nothing in this review has changed.
Robert A Dean Jr : Not a bad device
I will admit that I have had a few challenges getting the smoker to function with a tea-light candle. I also noticed that a lot of the times that I struggled was when the humidity was really high in the area. This unit functioned far better on a dry day than on an excessively humid one. Cleaning out the holes in the generator very well over the candle location, making certain the sawdust was dry, and making certain there was sufficient airflow solved most of my problems.
TB : There are better products to use when smoking foods.
On multiple attempts I've been unable to keep the ash lit. I used a 5 hour tea light as well as a blowtorch and was unable to keep the ash burning. If there's a "secret" to it then I wish someone would share it.....otherwise save your money. Sorry...but I can't recommend this product at any price and if I was able to return it I would.
Alan G. : doesn't stay lit

Grandma Sunny : Great
Hubby loves it
Will Lankford : Stayed lit
Worked great
Guenter S. : Smoked reliably for 12 hrs
I had a different smoke generator before, but it got too hot in my BBQ grill. This one did a perfect job for cold smoking in a typical gas grill.
PC : Um...No
The concept is great. The reality blows and getting a response to return the item...nada.
Use larger chunks of whatever wood, and rest them in a pan of the shaved wood they proport you use.
That said, too much smoke can steer folks away.
This is a cold smoke use tool only. Act accordingly.
Amazon Customer : No good
Didn't work with anything I tried
Amazon Customer : Use with fine sawdust
It was a gift but we purchased one previously and it works great with very fine sawdust
Daniel F. : doesn't work with any types of wood
doesn't work
Nick Luvera : Can't keep it lit
I spent hours trying to keep the sawdust lit. The tea candle idea is useless. Finally bought a butane torch. Still wouldn't smolder. Used the recommended sawdust. Watched videos, read blogs. Nothing worked. Returned the product. Very disappointed.
Jason : Cold smoking tool
This takes quite a bit to start. Not only do I use a tea light candle, I also use a tourch to get it going. Once it is finally smoking on its own it will burn all the way through.
Dan Johnson : This product works GREATTTTTT.
Great product
KEN MATSUO : best for cold smoking
best cold smoke generator, very simple and easy to use.
warren k. : will go out and not smoke
the dust will not stay lit for smoking . keeps going out / no smoke / tried everything. Have a cured salmon with no smoker. I am using the cherry wood dust that came with the Cold smoke generator package. please need advise.
Bryon Hess : Works great... with pellets.
I use smoking pellets rather than saw dust. Works great and makes a lot of smoke. I would not recommend using saw dust in it. Saw dust settles too easy into a dense pack, leaving less air circulation around the wood particles. Pellets are densely compressed, but leave ample air between each pellet. A candle will not light them well though, I use a torch to start mine. I place it in the bottom of a vertical smoker that I converted to electric for more accurate temp control. The pellets produce a lot of smoke for about 4 hours before I have to refill the coil basket. Pellets come in such a variety of flavors that each time I use it, I can change up my flavors rather easily, I can even mix different pellets on the same burn. I've never had the smoke burn out with the use of pellets, but it dies quickly when I use sawdust. I hope this helps.
Amazon Customer : Sturdy, works well.
Seems to be well made, the only change I’d make would be to make the handles folding.
It is very finicky about the size of sawdust used, the finer the better. To get the tea light to work I had to process the sawdust in a coffee grinder.
Yonny : DOESN'T WORK
HORRIBLE PRODUCT
DOESN'T SMOKE , THE BURNING PROCESS DOESN'T START
MONEY FOR NOTHING
StpCollabr8nLstn : Needs the right sawdust!
I bought this smoke generator with the sausagemaker sawdust, it would not work or stay lit, this sawdust was too coarse. I just bought pellets and let those soak and dried them at 175 for like 6 hrs. That did magic! I lit up the generator and it’s smoking away. Also I used a blow torch to light it
Amazon Customer : Never stays lit.
It was even recommended for me to dry the sawdust in the oven first and still would not stay lit.
lunchbox : meh
i bought this and now regret doing so, pain in the butt to keep lit and puts off too much heat when i can get it to say lit. i have since bought a cold smoker box for my smoker and tossed this guy in the trash. also a huge sooty mess to handle an clean.
