I have read the reviews, has anything been done about the paint?

Answer: Don't think so. A roaring start will still catch the barrel afire. I just burn the charcoal down past flaming before putting the barrel on. This is the only unit that uses the very old "Cajun Cooker" fluted charcoal pan, and the old Brinkman parts. I can live with flammable paint, as long as I can get the old base and pan. I started using these nearly 40 years ago. Best yet for venison & feral hog hams

Answer: I bought mine several years ago and the paint was an issue. It also doesn't hold heat. It was a real pain to use. Better to buy an electric smoker.

Paint melted during the heat cleaning process suggested by the manual. Used less than the suggested amount of charcoal as well. I wouldn't consider this to be safe for cooking food. Was excited about this but it looks like it's going to the dump.

This smoker is compact and works pretty well. It doesn't seem to be holding up well to the elements so I'd encourage you to keep it indoors when not in use. It's pretty simple and does the job. As much as I like the flavor of charcoal, I prefer my electric smoker because it's so much more convenient.

A fantastic smoker, both for its size and price point! I've used a much larger unit in the past, and while it has certainly held up over the years, the Dyna-Glo is a wonderful first unit. Significantly smaller than most units, when this came, I thought it was going to be box 1 of 2.
Very compact, very easy to assemble, and a breeze to use. At only 18 pounds, this would be great to have for tailgating or camping. I also really appreciate the two separate sections for grilling and smoking. I tried both fish and sausage and had excellent results, and the unit cleaned easily.
It definitely would be beneficial to have a watering can or something with a nozzle to add water through the door. But the door itself is well-made and didn't stick, or let anything out, so that's a good trade-off in my opinion.
Highly recommend.

Smoked some Backribs using charcoal briquets and Applewood chips. Great results in 4 hours. Easy to manage with the handles and access door to add coals during the smoking process. Temperature was easy to maintain also.

You get what you pay for. I received this as a gift from my girlfriend for Christmas and was a little doubtful when I looked up the reviews, but I figured what the hell lets give it a try. I have tried every way I can think of to use this, minion method(fail), snake method(fail) and there is no happy medium. There is just no real temperature control because the vents are so loose that you cant control the airflow and even with them closed 100% the temp shoots up to 300 and higher. The best results I got where with the snake method but it took entirely to long to get to temp and after it did it didn't last long and reached the end of the coals. I may just be to inexperienced at smoking but it hasn't been easy or fun using this smoker.

What a great machine. Bought it for my son in law, and we have used it a number of times with great success. It is so convenient and easy to use. We made the Thanksgiving Turkey, Christmas Chicken, Several roasts, and for July forth we did a fifteen lb pork shoulder that turned out perfectly in only seven hours.

cegrover : Works, but flawed

I enjoyed this smoker for about a year, but the fatal flaws mentioned in reviews did catch up with it. Used for low heat, this is a great unit, but the water pan sits on the coals and this means constant filling or the risk of hard-to-clean gunk. Putting foil in the pan works, but it seems I found the limit to this method today, too. I did what turned out to be a great brisket and accidentally left the lid a bit off after removing the meat. Heat went up and I'm not sure what caught first, but the smoker went up in flames, the finish burning off and the handles melting. I had to put it out with a fire extinguisher! I like the design, but I'll spend a bit more and get a Weber next - everything I've read says they hold up much better.

Bolts with wingnuts are utilized for the entire assembly. I had to replace the majority of the nuts and bolts with my own hardware due to the wingnuts provided stripping out while tightening by hand. The inside of the smoker is painted. I realized this when I lit it for the first time and paint began to heat and drip down into the charcoal pan rendering the smoker useless for cooking food. The high gloss paint on the outside began to bubble before the thermometer temp reached 300F.

Chris : Nice Size, Leave the Paint Off

This little smoker is reasonably priced and a great size. Being this compact size, it is easy to store and easy to move. It works very well, but I would recommend that the company put out one without paint. While is isn't an issue yet, the paint is not going to hold up to the heat.
