I have read the reviews, has anything been done about the paint?
Answer: Don't think so. A roaring start will still catch the barrel afire. I just burn the charcoal down past flaming before putting the barrel on. This is the only unit that uses the very old "Cajun Cooker" fluted charcoal pan, and the old Brinkman parts. I can live with flammable paint, as long as I can get the old base and pan. I started using these nearly 40 years ago. Best yet for venison & feral hog hams
Answer: I bought mine several years ago and the paint was an issue. It also doesn't hold heat. It was a real pain to use. Better to buy an electric smoker.

Well-priced smoker after comparing to local prices. Nice size and easy to assemble.
Electric smokers may allow you to better regulate temperature - however, the taste is the same!
We have sampled fish, garlic, pork roast, ribs and beef roast . All nicely done - now to work on perfecting the rub!
Recommendation:

Nice compact size takes up little room. Easy to get going and we're ready to smoke some salmon.
I gave it three stars at this time - I won't know more about its performance till we attempt to use in warmer weather.

What a great machine. Bought it for my son in law, and we have used it a number of times with great success. It is so convenient and easy to use. We made the Thanksgiving Turkey, Christmas Chicken, Several roasts, and for July forth we did a fifteen lb pork shoulder that turned out perfectly in only seven hours.

I've tried 3 times to use the darn thing. First of all, forget the instructions to start with 30 coals. That's fine if you want the temperature to stay at 100. The water pan is not supposed to touch the coals, but the way it's designed, it touches the coals. I have given up. Can't get the heat up to cooking temperature. I went back to using the Weber charcoal grill. I would not recommend this smoker.

What a great machine. Bought it for my son in law, and we have used it a number of times with great success. It is so convenient and easy to use. Paint started melting off after about 6-7 uses. Very low quality materials including bolts, grates (which have bent under minor weight of the charcoal) and paint/finish which melts off.

You get what you pay for. I received this as a gift from my girlfriend for Christmas and was a little doubtful when I looked up the reviews, but I figured what the hell lets give it a try. I have tried every way I can think of to use this, minion method(fail), snake method(fail) and there is no happy medium. There is just no real temperature control because the vents are so loose that you cant control the airflow and even with them closed 100% the temp shoots up to 300 and higher. The best results I got where with the snake method but it took entirely to long to get to temp and after it did it didn't last long and reached the end of the coals. I may just be to inexperienced at smoking but it hasn't been easy or fun using this smoker.

Putting foil in the pan works, but it seems I found the limit to this method today, too. I did what turned out to be a great brisket and accidentally left the lid a bit off after removing the meat. Heat went up and I'm not sure what caught first, but the smoker went up in flames, the finish burning off and the handles melting. I had to put it out with a fire extinguisher! I like the design, but I'll spend a bit more and get a Weber next - everything I've read says they hold up much better.

I tend to BBQ and smoke a bunch of meat most of the year. I prefer the charcoal grills and smokers over the propane, to me the food cooks differently and has a better flavor overall.
Here is what I like about this smoker:
