Sterling M. Smith : Great value and seals better than a $100+ machine
First, this is only $20 right now as I'm writing this review. That's an amazing price for what you get. It's an unknown brand, comes in a plain brown box, and the manual is a fairly okay translation. The name-brand sealers come in a nicely photo-printed box along with a well-written manual, but some of those will cost up to 13x the price of this.
I've used a FoodSaver™ Vac 500 for the past 10 years or so and it finally stopped working. I opened it up and the only problem was with the pump mechanism. The motor still worked and the sealing-wire still worked, but no suction. It turns out that there was a small silicone washer -- about the size of a US Quarter that had gotten stiff over the years and eventually disintegrated. The silicone washer was crucial because that was part of the piston that moved in a cam-shaft to pump the air out. I tried repairing it by crafting a replacement washer from an old tire-repair kit -- the only problem is the piece was rubber and not silicone. It worked once, but the friction was a little too much and . . . well, rubber tends to get mushy as the temperature increases. The friction was too much and it fell apart. So, it was Ziploc bags and freezer burn until I could get a working machine. I'll still probably try to fix the old FoodSaver™ because that tiny little silicone piece is the weakest link and likely costs less than a penny. If not for that, the machine would still work. And I have a hard time tossing a perfectly good machine into a landfill if I can fix it with just a tiny part that I could probably 3D print.
Anyway, since I was in the middle of vacuuming steaks, it was Ziplocs and freezer-burn until I got this as a replacement.
I was very surprised by this machine -- I honestly wasn't expecting much for the $20. Of course, the machine I was replacing was 10 years old, but I think I paid around $150-$200 back then.
This machine has the benefits of some design improvements that have been made in the last 10 years like using touch-buttons and blue LEDs. The motor is a little louder, but not by much. I don't have a decibel meter, but I guess it's somewhere between an electric hair-trimmer and a hair blow-dryer on medium -- you can talk over it if you need to. (I've included a video with sound).
One nice improvement is that it has storage inside for the vacuum bag rolls and a built-in bag-cutter blade. It's basically the same concept as the FoodSaver™ stand-alone bag-cutter/holder, but all inside the unit.
The suction is much better than the old Vac 500 FoodSaver™ that I'm comparing it to, but since that's a 10+ year old machine, it's not a strictly apple-to-apples comparison.
It has a mode for dry food and wet foods which is nice if you've got something with liquid that might get sucked into the pump -- which you don't want.
The locking mechanism takes a bit of force to push to close, and the buttons which lock it down are made of plastic -- which is a weak point in my opinion since the plastic could eventually break and make the whole thing much harder to use.
Pros: - The high-pressure vacuum removes nearly all the air from the bag - Internal bag-roll storage - Built-in bag cutter - Touch buttons with attractive blue LED labels - Works with just about any vacuum sealer bag replacement rolls (up to 12") - Stainless steel finish - Compartment underneath for cord storage
Cons: - Kinda loud, but not as loud as a blender or garbage-disposal - Plain brown box, translated manual with a few confusing word substitutions -- but not too hard to figure out - Plastic buttons for the locking mechanism that are under quite a bit of tension once locked - Closing the unit to lock takes two hands to shut and quite a bit of muscle. Maybe about 30 pounds to get it to click-lock which isn't tremendously much, but younger kids and the elderly might have trouble getting it to shut.
Overall, though, this thing is a great machine and does what it's supposed to do. For the current price of $20, it's a super-value deal for an okay quality machine.
LET : Does not work
It either vacuums or seals, but not both. I have read the instructions so many times trying to figure out what I was doing wrong. It's a piece of crap. Dont waste your money. Definitely sending it back!@
