This chart contains over 240 shipwrecks along the North Carolina coast. The print highlights many different Civil War ships and includes several drawings of shipwrecks and historical events as interpreted by the artist. Not only will you see where these famous wrecks are located, but also included on the chart is a collection of 31 stories about how many of these shipwrecks came to be. Read below about the Condor, just one of the many fascinating ships mentioned on the chart... Condor: This 300-ton Side-wheel steamship was built in Scotland for the Confederate government. On October 1, 1864, while approaching New Inlet, Condor was chased by the steamship USS Nipon. The captain was able to escape, but ran his ship aground near New Inlet. One of the passengers, Rose O'Neal Greenhow, a Confederate spy, was carrying a bag of gold around her neck. She insisted on being taken ashore so she could deliver it to the Confederate government. A large wave upset the boat, and Mrs. Greenhow drowned, dragged under by the weight of the gold. The Condor was a total loss. Full color. 18.75" x 20"
