Questions about Smokin-It Model #1 Electric Smoker
Q:
How hot does the outside get during use?
Answer: It doesn't get hot on the outside. You can put your hand on it with no rpblem.
Answer: The outside is not hot all all. Even after hours of smoking, it is cool to the touch. Very we'll made.
Answer: This smoker is so well insulated,it is cool to touch on the outside!Great smoker! We used it every weekend since Christmas!
Answer: Not hot at all!! You can touch it and hardly feel any heat. Safe if kids around.
Answer: As others have said, it does not get hot except if you put your hand over the smoke hole on top.
Answer: It cool to the touch. Not hot at all. I love mine.
Answer: The majority of it does not get hot. Maybe wzrm at the most.
Answer: Never too warm to touch, actually stays cool in most weather regardless of the temperature.
Q:
Does this produce a lot of smoke? Can you smell it from far away. I need something that won't bother neighbors.
Answer: Really depends on your temperature and amount of wood you put in the unit, this unit uses considerably less wood than any other unit I've seen so it will produce the least amount of smoke as far as smokers go. I kept my temperature low around 125-135 for salmon and barely got any smoke. When I had it cranked up to 220 with two chunks of wood (unnecessary) there was a LOT of smoke.
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Any smoker produces a lot of smoke but this comes straight out the top. Its really well insulated. The amount of smoke also depends on the amount of wood chips in it. Usually after 2-3 hours the smoke dies out and its more like an oven. That works though because the meat usually has all its smoke flavor and you dont need wood to keep it hot. You can control your smoke. Thats the best way for me to answer this question.
Answer: At first there is a little smoke but then after about 5 minutes the smoke dwindles down to a faint trace. And then there is a little smoke smell but nothing that should bother the neighbors. We love ours!
Answer: No problem with this smoker. You'll be satisfied with lack of smoke and non-neighbor annoyance! :-)
Answer: I have a small concede covered front porch and use the smoker on it so that it's out of the weather. It does emit some smoke from the top vent but not very much. It's better that any grill smoke when I grill.
Answer: No. Not much. You don't have to put any wood in the smoke box if you don't want to but it really doesn't make much smoke.
Answer: I believe it would b fine.
Q:
can you cold smoke
Answer: Yes, you absolutely can cold smoke with this unit. The company provides a cold smoke plate that fits perfectly into the unit: http://www.smokin-it.com/product_p/smkplt.htm
Answer: Not sure what that is, but you need to get the wood hot enough to smoke. Lowest setting is 100 F and highest is 250 F -- so it is slow smoke with great results!
Answer: I don't believe that you can "cold smoke" with this as the heating element is at the bottom and has to generate enough heat to burn the wood and create smoke. This will get the temperature in the box too high for "cold smoking".
Answer: Jeffrey, unfamiliar with "cold smoking." However, will say have smoked brisket, whole chickens, ribs, etc., several times...and have been quite pleased
Answer: You can, you need to get the cold smoke plate, my buddy does cheeses in his with it.
Answer: I followed this method with my Smokin' It #1 for cheese: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW1M5OMLPbg It worked great! Hardest part was the 3-4 day wait for it to mellow.
Answer: I haven't tried it. Sorry could not help you.
Q:
Does the meat have a nice smoke bark on it when is finished
Answer: YES! And it also gets a nice pink smoke ring on the inside! Great little smoker and great customer service! Can't say enough good about this products and the folks that make and sell it!
Answer: It does. I smoked a boneless Boston butt last night and it would have visually answered your question!
Q:
Can the smoker be used indoors (Basement) with some sor of venting? If so, how would you design the venting system?
Answer: I do not recomend using the smoker indoors.
Answer: I'm not expert on venting, but I wouldn't think so. There's a trickle of smoke that comes out at all times, but when you open the door to get your meat out, there's quite a blast (which I love, btw). :-)
Q:
Can an extension cord be used to plug in outdoors?
Answer: It would depend on how far and what gauge extention cord. I would use a 10 gauge 25' cord.
Answer: Yes, just make sure its a 3 prong grounded plug type and a heavy cord. This is a great Smoker...
Answer: We have used one, but it was a heavy duty one designed for outdoor use.
Answer: I have used one with no problem.
Answer: yes you can make sure it is not longer than 25ft and is a heavy duty construction grade for best results.
Answer: Can u use this smoker inside the house or Is it outside only use
Q:
3 questions! :) Are the wheels locking castors? Do you NEED the wheels? Also, does the drip pan catch ALL the grease?
Answer: Yes, the wheels have locking casters. Nope don't really NEED wheels if you're not moving it around, I lock the casters and keep it on a table. Yes the drip can catches All the grease that drips but there's still a bit that stays back. Foiling the bottom and firebox cover catches the rest. I just remove the old foil and put new ones on each time before I smoke.
Answer: The wheels can be removed with ease and the smoler can stand on its own or on a table top if need be. The drip pan is actually very large and can hold alot of drippings. It slides under the smoker into a fitted slot. If you wanted to save the drippings, I would move the drip pan to the inside to avoid contamination by bugs, etc.
Q:
where was this made?
Answer: Our smokers are made in our factory in China. Many of our accessories are made in the USA.
Answer: Made in the USA and just the BEST little smoker. It is so well designed, easy to cook and easy to clean..
Answer: This smoker is made in northeast Indiana. Very good quality unit.
Answer: Quite sure in USA
Q:
Does the door have a rubber seal? Can you run the cord from a wireless temp probe between the door and smoker body?
Answer: I have this model. I got it January 2014 and have used it at least six times. There is no rubber seal but the door is very tight. No problems there. I use a remote thermometer dropped down through the top hole (Maverick ET-732 Redi Chek) and it works great. I really have enjoyed this and I have never used a smoker before this one.
Answer: No it doesn't have a rubber seal. In my mind it has something better. Metal to metal with the spring door handle keeping it tightly sealed.
Answer: No rubber seal. Tight fitting steel to steel! You could run a thermal probe down the top vent hole. These are excellent smokers. I have been using one commercially for over a year.
Answer: Hi. The door seals tight, but there is a convenient chimney hole in the top center, about 1 inch diameter, where I always run my temp probe wire. Works great.
Answer: The door is a pretty tight metal on metal fit. I own a Maverick cordless unit, I run the temperature probe lead up and out the vent on top and just set the sending unit on top while it cooks. Hope that helps.
Answer: It does not, there is room for a wired temp prob. This smoker is awesome. I love that its electric dip you can set the temp and forget it. Very sturdy and well built
Answer: There is no rubber seal but you can run the wire. This smoker is built extremely well!
Answer: No need to run it thru the door..IT CAN RUN UP THRU THE SMOKER HOLE.
Answer: No rubber seal. A great product, but I do nothing wireless so couldn't help on that part.
Q:
does it has a gasket on the door?
Answer: It does not, and that is by design. It's all metal-on-metal compression; the manufacturer didn't design the smokers to have gaskets, as they break down and eventually need to be replaced. The metal-on-metal compression is a much better solution.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Has anyone smoked salmon with this smoker?
Answer: absolutly!!!
Q:
Would it be practical to place the smoker on a wrought iron patio table, without its wheels? The accessory cart is quite expensive..........
Answer: My unit arrived without the wheels attached. Without the wheels, the drip pan rests against the ground and makes the unit somewhat unstable. You could probably remove the drip pan and think of something else to catch the drippings. The unit itself is very well insulated and other than the problems I have noted, I don't see any problems with placing it on a wrought iron table. You could also probably just elevate it on the table with well-placed bricks, but with all of these alternate measures I would be very careful about making sure that the unit was stable.
Answer: It comes with wheels. I wouldn't attempt to set it on a table. Dangerous...
Answer: It is small enough to do that.I bought mine to take camping.good luck
Q:
Do they make any type of cover for this ?
Answer: The smoker ships without a cover. However you can buy a fitted black canvas cover for about $39 on their web site. The cover appears to be treated canvas and water resistant. I still try to protect my smoker from the elements, even with the cover, but it was left out for a number of days already this spring (rainy and sunny conditions) with no visible change to the cover itself and the smoker remained completely protected. They also have a camo cover.
Answer: Yes. Mine came with a cover. It was included
Answer: You could look on their website, they have an online store other than amazon. Also I would recommend using a small grill cover you can purchase at walmart.
Answer: Yes, it's on their website. I bought one and it is decent quality. Great smokers!
Answer: Yes. It's available on website. I bought mine extra. Didn't come with it from amazon.
Answer: Yes, they have one that you order direct. The unit comes with a pamphlet with a few optional items .
Answer: Not that I am aware of.
Q:
If I purchase the #1 will I likely wish I had gone with bigger model?
Answer: This model only came with two shelves. Strange because there is a place for a third. I cut my own third shelf. I'm sure they prefer that you have to buy the third as an expensive option. Boo on them...
Answer: I don't recommend this production. Had two heaters fail. Gave up & went to gas!
Q:
Can you fit a whole turkey in side?
Answer: You can fit a 18-20 pound turkey inside. I usually break the turkeys down to component parts so if need be I can take the breast out and leave the dark meat in longer.
Answer: A whole turkey can fit inside but without having actually done this myself, I initially would say that you would want to stick with about a 10 -12 pound turkey.
Answer: Yes a 10-12lbs. turkey.
Answer: Check the dimensions of the Model #1 on the website. But yes, you could put a small turkey inside. It might be snug depending on the size of turkey.
Answer: Yes you can
Q:
can one smoke a 15lb turkey with it. can the racks move
Answer: Yes the racks move. I have cooked a 14 pound turkey and would say that is about as big as you can go, but depending on the bird it may be possible
Answer: Yes the racks move.
Answer: yes and yes
Q:
Can you buy a cover that fits this smoker?
Answer: Yes you can. The smokin-it website sells covers and lots of accessories
Answer: Yes, order it from smokingit.com
Answer: Yes from the company smokeit
Answer: yes, go to Smokin it.com
Answer: Yes, from smokinit.com
Q:
2 questions: 1) Would this be safe to put on a wood deck? 2) Where does the smoke vent from...the hole on top?
Answer: Plenty safe. The wheels keep it nicely spaced and it does not get especially hot. Warm certainly, but not hot. I bought this stainless cart to put mine on. Just took the wheels off, set it on the cart then reattached the wheels to clamp it to the cart. Huuuuge back saver! https://www.amazon.com/Finnhomy-Commercial-Utility-Rolling-Service/dp/B06XKKGR43/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Stainless+kitchen+cart+wire&qid=1613781057&s=furniture&sr=1-2
Answer: Answer to both questions is "yes". Great product for the $$! I bought my smoker in '19. I don't use it that often, but have smoked some really great ribs, brisket, and chicken. Quality product!!
Answer: Yes you can use on a wood deck. Smoke comes from the smoke hole on the top.
Answer: You can put it on a wooden deck, it’s very well insulated. However it’s not very tall so a table or other platform is recommended. It vents through the top and isn’t too smoky but I run a fan to help dissipate it.
Answer: Ok on wood deck. I set my on the utility chart on edge while smoking for safety. Hole on top for smoke.
Answer: Yes to both. No damage done to a wooden deck. (Have had this smoker for many years...no problem.)
Answer: Yes and yes
Q:
how does this unit compare to the digital electric smokers on the market such as masterbuilt, char broil, etc ?.... appreicate the honesty!
Answer: Hi, I owned this smoker since 2013, and nothing to regret, it is an excellent product, smoking everything perfectly, the only cons that I think, is the size, but I really recommend Smokin-It
Answer: Before buying this Smokin-it I had purchased two Masterbuilt digital Smokers. Both died from electronic and burner failure. What I liked about the Smoking-it was the ability to change heating elements. The simpler design gets the job done. Also, a heavier box design. The only thing that I didn't appreciate was they didn't include enough grill racks. If you want to use it to it's full capacity you must buy the third grill rack as an "accessory".
Answer: Sorry I never used those other models; but I really like the smokin-it. Just wish I got a bigger model.
Q:
Is anyone storing the smoker outside under a cover all year?
Answer: Yes, I store it on my patio. I bought the cord hanger attachment and the cover. I also tie a 10'x10' camping tarp over it just to be safe. I smoked ribs in -37 Celsius last week and had no issues. By the way, I live in Canada and we have lots of snow, but this smoker is a tank.
Answer: Yes, I have the smoker outside all year. I cover it with the cover from Smokin-it, but I also keep it under my covered patio. I've had no issue doing it this way, although I live in California where the temperature rarely gets all that cold, and it *never* snows.
Answer: We have stored ours outside with a cover for 2 years and it looks like new and operates just fine. We live in Georgia and it has withstood a lot of rain. The cover is one of those nylon types that just fits over the smoker.
Answer: Have mine under a covered patio without a cover. If it gets dusty, just wipe it off or hose it down. Had mine for 3 years and love it.
Answer: I keep it outside covered most of the year but during the heavy snow falls here in upstate NY I bring it in the garage and smoke in there with the door open . I've use the smoker in below freezing temps and it just keeps working like a storm trooper. Still looks almost brand new.
Answer: Mine has been sitting outside uncovered since the day I got it back in October and it still looks good. Will be putting it under cover soon though.
Answer: Yes!We use the cover in the winter. The smoker is made of stainless steel so shouldn't rust anyway.
Answer: We put a cover on ours while we don't use it for the winter
Answer: I keep mine in the outdoor storage room and have had no problems. If you intend to keep your outdoors I would suggest getting a cover.
Answer: I bring mine in after every use
Q:
Cold weather smoking? In the 20 degree Fahrenheit range or even colder.
Answer: Yes you can. The smokers have heavy insulation.
Q:
Tthe door is extreemly hard to close. Is this normal? How can you close a door that is so hard to close when it is on wheels and hot?
Answer: The door is a compression fit door. This way there are no gaskets to go bad. Two of the wheels are locking. The door is insulated and will not be hot to the touch.
Answer: The door on SI Smokers are designed to seal by using a tight almost spring loaded mechanism, so it could be that the door is functioning properly. I would have someone take a video of you closing it and send that to Smokin it. They are very responsible people and I'm sure they will correct anything that is not working properly.
Answer: Mine isn't extremely but it is tight, needs to be. Lock the wheels
Q:
Does it have a thermoter on it?
Answer: No, there is a control knob that the user can set the temperature at which the smoker will maintain. I have a thermometer that I insert in the meat and run the wire up through the vent hole in the top of the smoker.
Answer: No, but most thermometers that come with smokers aren’t very accurate anyway. If you want your meat and fish done the way you like it you should invest in a Maverick Remote temp. monitor. Well worth the extra money.
Answer: It does not have a thermometer on it. It does have a temperature dial but it is best to monitor the ambient temperature as well as the internal temp of the meat with a good thermometer such as the iGrill.
Answer: The unit itself does not have a thermometer but it has a temperature setting. Most people use a thermometer with a probe to stick in with the meat because that is where the temperature matters the most. I personally have not checked how stable the internal temperature is on the unit but I have had very good success just basing my cooking times on time alone so I expect the internal temperature doesn't vary too badly.
Q:
return policy
Q:
Which specific probe thermometer do you use? There are so many to choose from that I'm confused as to which one is the best to use. Thank you.
Answer: I have 2 , 1 from Amazon and 1 from Walmart in my town, both read within a degree of each other. I'm not a big believer that more expensive is better but that you use one is absolutely essential. I never smoke meat without one
Q:
Live in Minnesota. Will I be able to use outside in winter?
Answer: yes, place it out of direct wind and it will be fine. We use ours all winter starting with christmas and we live in the snow belt of upstate new york
Answer: absolutely. the unit is well built and will work outside in any weather
Answer: I live in Minneapolis and use it all year round no problem....You will love it!
Answer: I live in Colorado and use it all year. It is really well insulated, just allow a little more time.
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: how much does this unit weigh
Answer: Yes! I'm in Canada, I've used it in -40 degrees, held temp like a champ!
Q:
can i smoke a large turkey
Answer: Don't see why not as long as the dimensions of the bird will fit inside the #1, which should handle a pretty big bird. Check out the smoking-it forum on the smoking-it web page, there is a lot of information there.
Answer: I don't think a large turkey would fit in this size smoker.
Answer: Depends on what you think "large" means. A typical 16 lb turkey will fit just fine.
Answer: yes if it fits it will smoke
Answer: Only a 10-12 pounder in a Model #1.
Q:
Can this smoker be used on a generator?
Answer: Sorta kinda depends on how big your generator is and what else your using it for. The smoker has a element that heats up like an oven and runs on 110v
Answer: Yes it can. Make sure your generater has enough power to handle the smoker you choose.
Answer: I have never tried...but it is the perfect size for traveling or camping. I take mine on vacation all the time. 3 prong plug...fyi
Answer: Yes
Q:
Can this charbroil?
Answer: NO! Element is on bottom and only temps to 250 degrees
Q:
can you tell me what the swing is on the tempersture. In other words if it is set to 175 how high and low will the temp go
Answer: Our analog smokers have a +/-25 swing. Our digital have a -/+3.
Answer: Heats from 100 to 250 degrees Fahrenheit
Answer: The temperature does not fluctuate hardly at all from what I have seen.
Q:
How big a turkey can you fit in there?
Answer: I buy fresh turkeys at our store and purchased the "14-16" pound category. The biggest I've smoked in the #1 in the 3 Thanksgivings I've owned it is a 15 pound turkey . It worked great. If you can swing it, get a good wireless meat thermometer like the Maverick ET732 and you'll be set to go!
Answer: In model #1 I wouldn't go much bigger than a 10-12 lbs turkey. I have done some turkey breasts with no issues. BEST OF LUCK...THIS THING IS BUILT WITH GREAT CRAFTSMANSHIP.
Answer: I have never used this for smoking a turkey. I have a "Trashy Trash," smoker I used for big pieces of meat/poultry
Answer: Take the top rack out and you could fit at least a 16lb turkey.
Answer: Never tried turkey but some people claimed to smoke 16 lbs bird in it. Good luck.
Q:
Can you set up a turkey at night and not mess with having to refill wood until it's ready the next day.
Answer: Yes you can. You only place wood in our smokers at the beginning.
Answer: Yes you can. We never had to refill the wood for a turkey.
Answer: Yes. From what I have read about doing turkey, you don't really want to hit it with a thick smoke. However when you do a pork shoulder you do want that thick smoke, and from my experience if you fill the hopper either with chunks or cubes, that is no issue. Especially if you soak them in water before for like 30 mins. I'm no pro, hope it helps!
Answer: The heat elements burned out twice. Junked it....
Q:
besides wood chunks and chips can you use wood pellets also
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: yes, smoke pellets will work as well
Answer: No would pallets are for woodstoves
Q:
I live on first floor, is this a good choice
Answer: Probably, unless the floor is made of styrofoam.
Answer: If you a level area outside the smoker should work out well for you
Answer: I think so. It has wheels and it doesn’t get hot. It does put out a wisp of smoke during cooking. I like mine
Answer: Absolutely.
Q:
is this good for cold smoking?
Answer: Yes, but it requires a separate "cold smoke plate" - $29.99 on their website. This is what the product description says ... "This plate is designed to allow you to smoke cheese and other low temperature products with a minimum of heat. The cold smoke plate is placed above the firebox. Set heat control at level just high enough to produce smoke. We also recommend placing Miss TK's Katchin' pan loaded with ice on top of the cold smoke plate to help reduce temperatures inside the smoker."
Q:
What is the best way to clean the inside of the smoker?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: According to the instructions you don’t want the interior too clean. The smoke coating adds to flavor. Best way to clean the bottom is to prevent it with a foil lining on the bottom with a hole so it drains into the drip pan. If the bottom gets really crusty I just use a putty knife to scrape up the chunks.
Answer: Actually it's more trouble than it is worth. There really isn't any reason to clean the inside of a smoker. About the only thing you can do is wipe with a couple paper towels once or twice a year.
Answer: First off, always line the top of the smoke box with foil as well as the bottom of the smoker. Make sure you open the hole in the foil where it covers the drain. Removing this foil after the cook is the bulk of the clean up. I soak and then use a scotch bright pad on the racks and rack supports which are removable. I then de grease the interior with some formula 409. I don't try to "clean" everything just de grease.
Answer: When it gets all gummed up (with fat residue) I've been successful using an ammonia solution to clean it. Cheap and easy, as long as you can stand the smell. Saturate dirty areas, let it site, and then use a rag to wipe down. Repeat as necessary. I finish it with a rinse (water) wipe-down, and then run it empty up to 250 to clear off any residual ammonia.
Answer: Clean the inside??
Q:
has anyone needed to replace the heating element? any problems?
Answer: I have not but theor customer service is excellent and I like my smoker...going on my third year.
Answer: No..and we've had it for 2 years now with fairly regular use!Love it and the great customer service!
Answer: Unsure of others. I have not.
Q:
Can a meat thermometer be used with this model?
Answer: I use a probe type thermometer and string the wires through the exhaust hole in the top, works very well. Dont know about putting a typical meat thermometer in the smoker for 6-8 hours though.
Answer: I have a thermometer that I hang from one of the racks, just to double check the temperature, but haven't had any reason to check the meat temperature itself. I judge by texture and color.
Answer: Yes, I used a digital probe thermometer. You run the wire through the small smoke escape hole in the top or close the door on it. I have done it both ways with no issues.
Answer: Absolutely. I have a digital thermometer with a wire, and I run the metal thermometer through the top of the smoker where the smoke escapes. The wire reaches all the way down into the smoker and I've never had an issue with it. Works like a charm. Also works with conventional thermometers as well as wireless thermometers.
Answer: A thermometer could be placed in the smoke outlet hole on top of the unit, but not sure if that would interfere with the cooking. I didn't use a thermometer for my first attempt, but will next time to test accuracy of the smoker's gauge.
Answer: Yes!My Husband uses an electronic thermometer with the probe going down through the smoke vent hole!Hope this helps !
Answer: Yes, there is a vent hole on the top of the smoker. It is easy to thread the cord down to what ever you are smoking.
Answer: Yes I can. I use mine all the time.
Q:
What is the maximum temperature that the smoker can reach?
Answer: Yes, 250 degrees...and the smoker is made in China.
Answer: 250f
Answer: 250. Anything over that, you should just use your oven.
Answer: 250 degrees
Answer: 250 degrees.
Answer: 250 degree
Q:
What's the difference between this and the 1100 Pro Series model?
Q:
I will have to store my Model 1 inside my apartment. Does the smoker give off an odor while not in use that would be a problem doing this?
Answer: It seals up extremely well with the exception for the vent in the top. I would imagine you could devise a way to seal this hole. I keep mine in the my basement and have not had any issues with smell.
Answer: Wash the drip pan and perhaps tape the smoke hole and keep door shut. Perhaps put a trash bag over it and twist tie the top. This may keep bugs out too.
Answer: Not if drip pans are cleaned and the door is sealed.
Answer: Shouldn’t, I keep mine in an enclosed garage & you can’t smell it.
Q:
How long does this smoke without having to add more chips? Can I put in a 10lb brisket and come back in 12 hours without having to mess with it?
Answer: You absolutely can. Several times I have smoked pork butts overnight. With this smoker you are best to use wood chunks, not chips. I run the pork butts from 10 PM to 10 AM at 230 degrees with only two chunks of woodl, roughly 2" x 3". More than that and you run the risk of "over smoking", believe it or not. I am very pleased with this product. We are a family of only two, but I cook for 4-6 on it often and it is just right for that.
Q:
Can you add a liquid to the pan?
Answer: If the pan you're talking about is the one under the smoker, that is the grease pan and no, it won't work to add water to it. I do think there may be room to add a water pan to sit on the 1st shelf (wire grate) if you're cooking something small enough to fit in the wire grate(s) above it.
Answer: I am not sure what pan you are referencing? We do sell on our website a flavor saver that you can place water in as well as bear, wine or what ever you would want to season with.
Answer: Never added liquid to the pan that holds the wood chips, but have used a small metal container to put apple juice in
Q:
Can you do cold smoke?
Answer: I haven't tried that process yet, but the smoker does have a setting for 100 degrees, which I believe is in the range for cold smoking. Obviously, further research is necessary to definitively answer the question. Sorry I couldn't help more. I do love my smoker for ribs and brisket.
Answer: Yes, you need the cold smoke plate and slide it in above the wood box, then you need to put ice on top of the plate with what your smoking. Smoked cheese once and it turned out OK but be careful and use a digital thermometer down the chimney to be sure you don't melt the cheese.
Answer: Yes, see their web site. They have various cold smoke plates.
Answer: It is the electric element in the smoker that fires up the wood, but I suppose you could find another way to fire up the wood chips and then place the hopper in the smoker without turning it on.
Answer: Sorry. I don't know the answer. Possibly their website can assist.
Q:
I see no mention of they type of wood/brickets to be used with this smoker. What is recommended?
Answer: I use whatever wood you choose that produces the best flavor to your personal taste, oak, hickory, apple, pecan, mesquite etc. The key is not to use to much! When I first got mine I was amazed at how little it used compared to other smokers. I have a small digital kitchen scale to measure the weight of the wood and usually use 3 to 4 ounces of chunks. I think 8 ounces is the maximum they recommend, the Smokin-It web site has the info in the smokin-it forum.
Answer: You can use any wood the recipe you are using calls for. The unit comes with hickory for priming. The top of the smoker says do not use more than 8oz of wood. I buy chunk wood and cut it down to fit inside the wood box.
Answer: You can use the wood to your taste. We include a hickory sample with our smoker.
Answer: I have been using the medium size brackets (approximately 1 inch cube). I put about four of these in the wood chip basket and that seems to work fine.
Answer: hickory, mesquite, cherry, apple, whatever matches good with what your meat is
Q:
Has anyone done a Brisket? How big of a cut do you think the smoker could handle?
Answer: Customers do brisket in all size smokers that we sell. Thank you,
Answer: It can handle it if it works!
Q:
why is there no water bowl in electric smokin-it
Answer: Our smokers do not have a lot of air flow so food will not dry out. On our website we sell a flavor saver that can hold wine beer or water.
Answer: I think because it's so air tight. Also, because of that, I've found I need to use fewer chips or food is too smokey flavored (probably not possible for some). I've also added my own water tray, which is easy to do.
Answer: My smoker doesn't drink water out of a bowl. Initially, I would leave out a bowl of food and a separate bowl of water, but neither one was used by this smoker. Okay, seriously, it is not that difficult to add a water bowl if needed. Although this might be a suggestion that you may want to send to the company. It is a small company and might be more flexible in making changes to their products.
Answer: There is no need for it based on the design. You put woodchips in a box that slides over the heating element. Works very well!
Answer: We put our own in it
Q:
will it hold an entire brisket?
Answer: Yes easily. I can fit about 2-3 pork shoulders in mine at once and depending on the dimensions of the brisket, can put about 2 10 lb briskets at once (one on each shelf)
Answer: A small one. It depends on the dimensions of the meat.
Answer: If the heating element doesn't keep burning out. Yes..... Junked mine!
Answer: It will, You will need to cut it in two then use two shelves, but it will do a great job.
Answer: Yes.
Answer: Yes.
Q:
What are the inernal end external dimensions of this model?
Q:
How do you adjust the temperature?
Answer: There is a rheostat on top of the smoker that is adjustable up to 250 degrees.
Answer: There is a temperature control dial on the top. I have tested mine with a digital thermometer and have found it to be accurate.
Answer: The unit has a temperature control knob located on the top. It's marked in degrees and is pretty accurate. I always use a wireless thermometer to monitor the temp in the smoker and the internal temp of the meat. It's the best smoker I have owned, great quality! You won't be unhappy with it.
Answer: Turn a knob to adjust the temperature
Answer: Temperature gauge
Answer: There's a dial right on top of the unit. It seems to be a fairly accurate control. I have had great success with it.
Answer: Like an oven, use the dial/temp control
Answer: It has a control button up to 225.
Answer: Dial on top of smoker
Answer: Dial on top of smoker
Product reviews of Smokin-It Model #1 Electric Smoker
Alanna Benally : great value great quality
Very sturdy, solid construction. Retains heat very well. Very simple to use. Shipped quickly and was packed very well. For the price, this would be very difficult to beat.
Joseph M. Cone : Awesome!
After eating a smoked chicken at my neighbor's house, I decided that I had to have a smoker. After talking to several smoker owners and reading tons or reviews, I finally settled on the Smokin-It smoker. What a great choice. This smoker is built like a tank and is so easy to use and maintain. Being stainless, this is rugged and built to last. It is simple in design, just an element and a rheostat to dial in the desired temperature and that is it. I see a lot of smokers that are "fancy" and have a lot of electronics and stuff, but I also have heard a lot of problems with all the fancy electronics. I really do not see the need for that. My very first use was to smoke a turkey. I put a few chunks of hickory in the chip box and slid it over the element and then set the dial to 180 degrees and went away for 7 hours. I came back and had an awesome smoked turkey ready to eat. I didn't need remote controlled thermometers or windows to watch the turkey, none of that. I bought a good digital thermometer and when I checked the turkey and read 165 degrees in the thickest part, I pulled it out and was done.
My neighbor has a fancier smoker, but he is also complaining about the coating coming off, the window not being sealed well, etc. So from what I see, this rugged simple design makes the most sense.
This Smokin-It smoker is VERY well built. You can tell that it is not mass produced and that somebody has taken some pride in building it. The chip box is heavy stainless and has a sloped lid on it so that the drippings run off and fall to the bottom where there is a drain hole for the drippings to exit the smoker. The vent hole is non-adjustable, but seems to be designed where it functions perfectly as is. I put two small chunks of hickory, about 4 oz, in the box and it made a lot of smoke that lasted quite a while. The door latch is very rugged and works extremely well. The smoker is tight and seals well, the only smoke is coming from the vent...I have seen other smokers where the smoke is coming out thru cracks around the door, window, etc. Clean up is easy and stainless steel is perfect for this. It looks great and is easy to clean and won't stain or rust.
I can't say enough good about this smoker. I can tell that is it going to out perform and definitely outlast the ones I see selling at sporting good stores and the the like. Buy this smoker and you will not regret it.

Dave : Best Electric Smoker on the market ! Hands down.
I finally bought a Smoke-it smoker, Model #1. Been looking at this for over a year now. Quality and craftsmanship is 2nd to none. The insulated double wall all Stainless Steel construction makes this smoker better than all the others. So easy to set up and so easy to use. You only have to add chunks of wood once in the beginning which makes the smoking process about as easy as it can be. The craftsmanship of these smokers is outstanding, top quality materials and workmanship. Being that these are also made locally in the Midwest is a plus. I would highly recommend the Smoke-it Smoker. Can't wait until I can buy my 2nd Smoker, Model #3.
Dan : Incredible Value
Before I bought the #1, I was thinking about buying either a Smokin Tex or a Cookshack electric smoker. The Smokin-It is 1/2 the price, so I was concerned that it might be flimsy or too small. When it arived, I was delighted to find that the #1 is built like a safe! Further, the size is ideal for groups of 4 to 25. This is by far the best value in smokers.

This is an alright smoker. Not too large, I wish I would have bought the three self. I also would have like to see an actual temperature gauge mounted on the top. I think Im going to buy one and mount it myself. Overall This is a good smoker.
Kevin Hayes : Could not be happier!
As a novice to smoking but a guy who knows how to cook otherwise, I wanted to get into the game with a quality product. There is one little issue though...I just don't have the time to tend to a fire in order to keep consistent temps and get quality results. I have a 5 year old who keeps us very active and I simply cannot devote the time that is necessary to work on a "traditional" - read, fire burning - smoker. I explored the many electric smokers out there and after much consideration I went with the Smokin' It Model #1. Leading reasons were the solid construction, simple yet perfectly effective and efficient operation (why get something with a 1200 watt element when 350 watts will do the job???). Right from the start I knew I was in for a good product when I ordered it on a Sunday afternoon (Father's Day) and received notice that it had shipped out just a couple hours later that very same day! I received it in perfect condition 4 days later and set to getting it ready to smoke. A quick unpacking and vacuum to clear the shipping dust and it was ready to go for seasoning. A 4 hour smoke with the hickory chunks provided in the packing and I was ready to go. Baby back ribs that came out perfect (OK, a bit spicy but that was my fault for putting too much cayenne in the rub!) and today I completed my second smoke...2 whole chickens (almost 12 pounds total) done at the same time using the beer can method. Not only was there plenty of room but the efficiency of this smoker allowed me to smoke both birds fully in 4 hours using only 5 ounces of applewood chips (if you are going to use chips, purchase the chip insert for the smoke box)!!! They were fall off the bone tender and delicious. Next up is a long smoke for about 12 hours to make an 8 pound pork shoulder. I just can't wait to fire it up again! Or at least plug it in and let it do the work!
If you want to start smoking and purchase a real quality product that will have you up and smoking in no time at all, purchase this smoker!
Annika : Best smoker ever!
Best smoker I have ever owned! I had it set up and seasoning in less than 20 minutes. Extremely well constructed! Smoked 7 pounds of baby back ribs in 18 degree weather with wind and snow. Temperature was maintained throughout the 4.5 hours. I used 6 oz of Apple wood chunks and the smoke and flavor was awesome. The grates cleaned very easy with just a spray of water to get the major sugar and bbq sauce off, then the dishwasher made them come out like new. Finally, on the packing list/receipt Steve the owner of Smokin-it hand wrote a personal message of thanks for the purchase.
DGeorge : Great first smoker
This thing is a great machine, and is very easy to use. I bought the smaller size because I wasn't sure I would be into smoking meat. I am now thinking about upgrading to the next size up!
Mazoboy : Very Nice Smoker
Seasoned it as instructed. Used it 2 days ago for first time to smoke pork chops. They were little dry, my fault. But smoke flavor was a bit off tasting. I'll try with different wood next time. Smoker works great. It's very easy to move from my garage to patio because of the wheels.
Michael S. Walsh : Great smoker
I don't have time all the time to tend to a charcoal smoker, it's nice to set the temp and return six-seven hours later to a tasty product. I like the door on the front as opposed to a lid, you can slide in or out two seperate items if one is done before the other. Heavy duty construction. Ive only had it a little over a month and used it several times with great results each time. Looking forward to experimenting with smoking cheese.

catherine white : love this smoker
Bought this for my husband for Christmas. He loves it! He hasn't stopped smoking since he got it. So easy to use, and unlike his other smoker, he just puts the meat in, and it does the rest.

vadym : Best smoker EVER (#1 sise is good for family of 4).
This smoker is the best of the best of the best one! Half year of my research time - and YES I am HAPPY now ! Real - "no brainer smoker". My daughter is back to normal food (after 3 years of vegeterian!!!). No time for babysitting - just load the chicken ties, set knob to 210F and walk AWAY for 2 hours (put beer in fridge!:). No electronics to fail and spare parts is dirt cheap (if you ever need them. Any question is just a call away and Steve will pick up the phone (here in USA!). I can smoke the fish and cheese now! No sparks or CO poison so I can use it almost in my sunroom (very little of smoke coming out). Use just 400 watt - cycling on/off and keeps temp as it is insulated all around! Even grates is stainless still so will not pill off this Nickel coating as all others. Uses almost no wood - just a small chunk or two (included!). Happy, happy happy! THANK YOU! (made in USA and QUOLITY IS AMASING). Hope I halped someone to see the difference from jonk from Lowes or HomDepot. Vadym
bag : Exellent Product!
Well worth the money! And, the plus is...you use very little wood--for the meats on three racks! Cannot
beat it!
The taste is truly with the smokey flavor. Have cooked whole chickens, beef sausage, rib slabs, hamburgers, shish-kabobs,
etc.. Very good results from this smoker.
All of us in the household, are HAPPY CAMPERS!
S. Kurutz : Well-made, Smart Design, Efficient, and Simple
A great little smoker for someone (like me) who loves smoked food and lacks the time/interest/focus to micromanage a more complicated grill. It is incredibly efficient when it comes to wood use and heat (well-insulated). My only complaint is that the efficiency comes with what I'd call a "smokiness penalty": I have yet to get anything (turkey, ribs, brisket, roast, chicken) as intensely smokey as I did in my cheapo $80 barrel smoker. But, that's just me. Overall, a great value and I look forward to years, if not decades, of tastiness.

benzlady : Overall the smoking-it electric smoker is fine. The only issue is with the drip pan
Overall the smoking-it electric smoker is fine. The only issue is with the drip pan. It got dented in shipping I guess. So it is not perfect but still usable. I have already smoked salmon in it and it was delicious. It seemed to be packed quite well but I think the wheels being in the pan in shipping caused the denting with the pan. So maybe the shipper might try putting some packing material between the wheels and the pan. Anyway, I like this smoker. The fact that it is all stainless steel pleases me 100 percent. It arrived here on time. A great little smoker.
Sarge : Great smoker
Works well and smokes well. brisket in this thing is amazing. adds a nice bark when following the instructions in regards to temperature and amount of wood. Will be upgrading when I outgrow this one.
David Mikesell : Fantastic smoker!!
I was looking for a smoker that was built like a tank, didn't need a lot of care, and I could use often. This one hits the mark on all points. Right now, I'm in the process of smoking 87 lbs of pork shoulders for a bbq fund raiser, and this smoker is working 16 hour days with no problem. My only regret is not shelling out the $ for the model 2, which probably would have made this project a bit less work.
It comes with a few dowels of hickory which was nice, but I bought Peterson's Pucks (hickory and cherry), which are easy to work with and create a nice flavor. It took a little practice with the temperature control to find the mark that worked best. I found that just under the 250 mark works great for pork shoulders, but I don't know how precise the temperature control is from unit to unit. You might need to run a trial or two to find what works for you.
Line it with foil (change between uses), add some wood and meat and fire it up. For me, it's been bullet-proof.
Update 12/2014: Over Christmas-time I hot-smoked several filets of salmon using applewood to make a killer salmon spread. Fantastic results. This past summer I also smoked corned beef to make killer pastrami, and made several rounds of pork barbeque as well. The only thing I've tried that didn't turn out great was smoking beef brisket, but that was due to operator error and not the smoker.

Deanno : My wife took mine..
Great unit, works well.
I was able to smoke a brisket, chicken. It's true what they say only use one piece of wood, maybe two, then add as needed or the meat will be bitter.
I used a foil pan under the rack so clean-up is no problem at all. So my wife decided to smoke some fish, then cheese, yea cheese, and it is darn good! So now she is smoking some chicken and I'm out a smoker!!
My,... wait! Our only complaint is the unit sits too low when the wheels are off for the pan to fit under it, and we don't want it with wheels. Other than that we love it!
trudy jones : Outstanding Electric smoker!
I absolutely love this Smokin-It electric smoker! It may be smaller than some, but has 3 sizable racks with plenty of room for meats and sides. The food that comes out of is out of this world! Haven’t used my gas or charcoal grill since purchasing this smoker. I did buy a 4 ft long folding plastic table to place it on which gives me plenty of work area and can place the hot racks on after they come out and easy clean up. It heats up quickly, holds the temperature and actually gets food done quicker than expected. I can highly recommend this electric smoker!

The stainless steel smoker is perfect addition to my stainless steel BBQ. I did not use the wheels that came with it but placed the smoker on small felt pads and placed it on my outdoor countertop.
The interior is perfect size for the smoking needs of me and my wife. We have used it 3 times and all three times it has kept a constant internal temperature and the external surfaces never got too hot to touch.
Make sure you place aluminum foil on on the oven bottom to facilitate cleanup
Also to keep your meat moist, make sure you drink a half a can of beer before you place that can in the smoker.
The smoker did arrive with 2 damaged grates, but after one email to their customer service, I had replacement grates within a week.
T. Lewis : Best thing to come out of Ohio since 1836
Being a resident of the Luling/Lockhart BBQ mecca of central Texas, I can drive or walk to some of the top BBQ joints in the state. Kreuz's, Luling City Market, Smitty's, etc. are just a hop, skip and a jump away. It's not uncommon to see a $40,000 truck pulling a goodness knows how many $ custom smoker behind it with a crew off to a cook-off. This is serious stuff here.
I was a little skeptical that a $249 electic smoker from Ohio would be able to cut the mustard around these parts. I mean, really would a little smoker that you plug it really make a decent brisket when you really need a 10,000 pound steel behemoth and years of secret BBQ experience (or a least that's what everyone is told)? But hey, what the heck, I can always use it for a heater in the garage if it doesn't work, right?
A $20, 11.5 pound brisket, rubbed down the night before, and a few hickory chunks proved that this little baby it a GIANT KILLER! I smoked it 10 hours at about 210 degrees (I checked the rack temp. with an oven thermometer and it was right on), it was full of smoke, juicy, and wonderful. All I did was replenish the wood a couple of times during the day, and leave it alone otherwise. That's it. So, I can now make a central Texas caliber brisket for about $1.70 a pound instead of the $9+ at the BBQ joints. (Hint: get a packer cut brisket and put the fat side towards the top of the smoker)
O.K. Ohio, you did it again. You sent the "twin sisters" cannons to Sam Houston at the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836. 170+ years later you did it again with the Smokin-it!
VIVA BBQ!

Royco : Really good smoker
I bought this to get into smoking without all the work - kinda like a trial. Smoker worked great. Ribs, brisket came out great but chicken NOT. Chicken needs higher heat than most electric smokers can provide otherwise the skin comes out rubbery and that's the only drawback that I can find. I still love it though, it makes the job soooo much easier.
Daerius : Perfect Little Smoker!
This smoker is a bit more pricey than some other models, but as far as quality it is worth every penny! In fact, I think that it is the perfect little smoker. It's solid, stainless steel construction makes cleaning a breeze. The well positioned smoke box is simple to operate as well as to remove when you are done. The heavy-duty, rolling wheels make for easy movement, even on the fly and while the unit is working. And finally, the built in rheostat for temperature control allows you to be extremely precise in controlling your smoking temperatures! This weekend, I smoked a couple racks of ribs with a whiskey smoke and they turned out perfect. In fact, my friends thought that they were the best ribs they have ever had. In fact, everything that I have smoked has turned out awesome. If you are shopping around... you can stop right here. This is the smoker that you want.
Swindon : Smokin-It Model #1 Electric Smoker

with all the charcoal mess.
Wife smoked pork butt and pork loin using Pecan wood, came out great

S.Berk : WOW great smoker
Arrived 4 days before stated delivery date - fast service. The unit is sturdy and not complicated to get ready to use, just put the wheels on and ready to go! I did a 3 hour empty smoke to season as suggested then waited for the weekend to do a brisket.
I have never smoked anything before. This was so easy. The brisket turned out tender and juicy. We couldn't stop eating it, even my picky 13 year old daughter had 3 helpings. She already wants me to do another one. My wife was skeptical about me getting a smoker but after tonight she is sold.
I read about a lot of different smokers and talked to friends for their input. I finally decided on this one based one the reviews and price. I didn't want to spend a ton of money but also didn't want something cheap. This unit is perfect. Just the right size for our family and easy to use.
I can't wait to do ribs, chicken, turkey, salmon.....
IronBeard : Simple and wonderful
I received my Smokin-It Model 1 a few days ago, and just smoked my first pork loin in it last night. It was excellent!
I was wanting something simple... I simply don't have the time, nor want to put the time into nursing a traditional smoker along to maintain proper heat levels and air flow, etc. I knew the hassle associated with that would soon make the smoker a yard ornament. So I considered a propane smoker, since they are cheaper than the electric, and could be used in remote camping situations. After talking to a heavy-set sales person at a smoker store (never trust a skinny cook), I decided to go electric - mostly because anything that goes into the smoker (i.e. gas residual emissions... which are minimal, but still present) will go in the food.
After deciding on electric, I started researching and looked at several brands of electric smokers. The common complaint was the heating element. On some, the element was not replaceable. On some, it was WAY difficult and somewhat expensive to replace the element. As the part which is most likely to fail, I found this to be just plain stupid. Poor design work and forethought. Then I found the Smokin-It Model 1 and the Smokin Tex 1100. These two had the simplicity I was wanting (plug it in, put wood in it, foil lower parts for cleanliness, put meat in, set temp, wait, eat). There is no remote heat sensor, nor is there any digital board. Just a plug in and a knob. The heating element is easily replaceable, and costs a whopping $20 directly from Smokin It! Additionally, with the insulated sides and back, I don't have to worry about my kids or dogs bumping up against a scorching smoker. It is warm to the touch on the top, but no chance of burning yourself or others. The all stainless construction looks very well done. Clean fit on everything, nothing askew. There are two drain holes. One inside the unit, and one just in front of the door, where there is a small catchment for any juices dripping from the door. All of that goes into a deep stainless tray that slides under the unit. I don't see how you could make a mess with this smoker. I used it right on my porch, with no drops or stains!
I decided on the Smokin It over the Smokin Tex due to the cost, and having casters included. Frankly, I really wanted to go with the Tex, being in Texas, but offering less and charging $100 more didn't seem to wise. SO, the Smokin It was the choice.
I seasoned it as instructed, with the hickory chunks included, and then smoked a nice Pork Loin the next day. It wasn't dry like pork can get when smoked - mostly because I put pineapple rings on top and a small tray of pineapple juice down by the wood box. It uses a surprisingly small amount of wood! For this one, I used Mesquite, and some Cherry Wood Chips. The pineapple rings tasted great as well!
I do recommend getting a few accessories directly from Smokin It (since they are not offered on Amazon). The wood chip liner is great for the wood box. You can use small chips instead of chunks. Also, I ordered a seafood tray, which has a finer mesh. I also recommend getting a smoker/grill wireless temp gauge. I got one at Target for less than $20. I can check the meat temp without opening the door. AND, if it breaks, I don't have to fix my entire smoker!
The shipping on both the smoker and accessories was VERY fast, and packaged well - so no damage.
If you are considering purchasing a smoker, especially an electric, you should definitely put Smokin It in the mix. I believe it was definitely worth the money! Well thought out, easily and cheaply repaired for the long haul, simple to use, efficient, safe, and oh-so-tasty results!
**** UPDATE - 5 MONTHS IN ****
I LOVE THIS SMOKER! Because it is so easy to use, I use it ALL THE TIME! It does great! So simple... so low effort! Just fire and forget! No problems, just tasty goodness! Ribs, Brisket, Stuffed Jalapeños, Stuffed Poblanos, Hams, Turkeys, Chickens, Armadillo Eggs (bacon wrapped around sausage stuffed with cream cheese and jalapeños), Pork Loin, EVERYTHING COMES OUT GREAT!
And I use it so often because I don't have to worry about nursing temperature or air flow or smoke flow or wood amount, etc. Just put wood in it, foil the bottom and the woodbox, and turn it on to the temp you want. BAM! DONE!
Well made product!
**** UPDATE - August 2012 - 18 MONTHS IN ****
The smoker is wonderful. No problems. No issues. No weak points. It just works and works well. I line the bottom of the box and the top of the woodbox with foil and clean the racks, and that is all. This is one of the best purchases I have made EVER. It just does its job without complaint. I do recommend getting one accessory from Smokin-It - the woodchip grate for inside the woodbox. I bought one, and it keeps ash and smaller chips from falling through into the burner area. Cheap purchase and worth it.
I recently helped a friend with their wedding food - 6 LARGE briskets. So, for 6 nights straight the little smoker did its all to get all the briskets ready for the reception. Cut the briskets in 1/2, marinate them in Cherry Dr. Pepper for 24 hours, throw them on the smoker with the fat side up. Repeat the process every night for a week. I have received a wealth of compliments on the meat.
If you are looking for an electric smoker you don't have to nurse along all night. Stop here and click "add to cart". I can't imagine you would be disappointed. I'm a fan.
**** UPDATE - September 2015 - YEARS IN ****
Still ZERO problems with this smoker. I use it regularly, and it still goes like a champ. It doesn't complain. It doesn't whine. It just works. Consistent... every. single. time. I do wish I had purchased one size larger, but this one has done me proud. Rarely does a product impress and continue to impress... this one does. I finally mounted it on an old workbench I purchased at a garage sale, so it is now at a higher elevation (I'm 6'2", and the ground is getting further away every year!). Just drilled holes for the legs and a drain hole for drippings. Here is a photo. It is outside (under the eave of the house) 24/4... still no issues.
