Questions about Amazing GOOP 5400040 Coat-It Waterproof Epoxy Sealer & Protector - 2 lb Kit, Dark Gray
Q:
Is it flexible?
Answer: No, it is not flexible once it has completely dried. It is rock-solid/-hard!
Q:
How many square ft does one can cover
Answer: I did the bottom of my drift boat. Best I could figure was about 50 sq.ft.. Two cans did one coat. I put on 2 coats. A little hard to spread it out that thin, but it turned out real nice. I poured it on and used a roller with a thin napped cover, like the ones used for epoxy.
Answer: Mfg video on Youtube said the 2lb will cover 20sqft.
Q:
Is this available in Black? I don't see a color listed.
Answer: It dries a light tan.
Q:
Can this expoxy be painted over? What is the actual color when dry? Thanks!
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: it can be painted over . The color is gray when dry. I use it to seal wooden boat exterior seams with fiberglass cloth and Amazing Goop.
Answer: As for the paint, ask a painter that paints boats, the color of the finish varies between gray to light black, mostly dark gray.
Answer: Yes it cab be painted over, the epoxy has a metalic color when dried
Q:
Can I use this to paint the tiles in my bathroom
Answer: Did you ever find a product that sealed your tiles? I'm taking care of a leaky, tiled fountain.
Answer: I wouldn't recommend it for that. It is thicker than paint and not a smooth finish.
Answer: I wouldn't recommend it. It's a slick, graphite epoxy that might get dangerous with wet bare feet.
Q:
can you use this to coat the inside of the hull of a boat to stop leaking?
Answer:
Answer:
Q:
I built a stereo from an igloo cooler I made a dry inside for my batteries and amp can I use this to waterproof the dry box so no water gets inside?
Answer: Yes this should work very well for that application.
Q:
is it possible to apply this with a paint gun?
Answer: No it’s super thick I found the best way to apply this is with a cheap paint brush
Answer: No it has the viscosity of molasses and will harden in 15-20 minutes
Answer: Hi!
Answer: Seriously doubt that, hard enough to just brush it on, THICK.
Q:
Could you use this for a brick fish pond?
Answer: IF YOU CLEAN YOUR BRICKS WITH A STEEL BRUSH, IT WILL LEAVE A GOOD SURFACE TO USE THE PRODUCT ON AND SHOULD SEAL YOUR BRICKS.
Q:
Can it be put on with a paint brush?
Answer: Yes, but it has to be a stiff brush, or brush that has been trimmed to be short bristles. Check their website.
Answer: From my experience that is the best way to apply, it is very thick.
Answer: That was how I did it!
Q:
How long will this be stable on a shelf before hardening?
Answer: I have purchased this and used a little at a time and it lasted 3 years before I used it all.
Q:
Can i seal my wood decking on my boat with this stuff then put carpet over it
Answer: Yes on the wood deck, but let it cure then use a carpet adhesive to place the carpet. Otherwise you will never get the carpet back up again. This stuff is epoxy.
Q:
Is this the same thing as/similar to epoxy floor paint? I am looking for paint for my basement floor and was told epoxy is best for basement floors.
Answer: Not that i know of. this is a sealant an glue. I have not opened it yet as the weather is not suitable for the planed use. If you are planning to paint the basement floor their are many products available. Be sure to wear a mask and use a fan to ventilate the space during and after you paint. Epoxy is flammable so turn off any gas powered equipment till the paint is dry and the fumes clear.
Answer: The price is not conducive to putting on a floor. I can be cost effective for small patches of walls & floors. I used it on a fiberglass boat with mediocre results. Any of the big box stores and even Wal-Mart have epoxy based garage floor paint at more reasonable prices. The Goop stuff was a huge mess on a boat as it is hard to work with and dried quickly: I could not imagine doing a floor with it!
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: This product may not be the best for your floor. It is expensive and does not have much coverage.
Q:
Can you paint this over an oil enamel painted surface?
Answer: Yes, with proper surface prep.
Q:
Can this be used to seal and waterproof/sunproof existing uncoated and unpainted exterior wood beams?
Answer: I believe that it can be used on wood per comments another buyer "Worked well for waterproofing a custom piece of wood for part time water immersion use. Keep in mind the shelf life from the manufacture date is one year."
Answer: but if the beam were struck with some object a chunk of this may be removed why not stain and varnish?
Answer: I am sure it would work well for that, but keep in mind it does not cover very many square feet.
Answer: Only thing i can say it does what it says it will do. You might contact Home Depot and ask them there or the manufacture
Q:
How slippery is the result? Could sand be mixed with it to make a non-skid coating?
Answer: Amazing Goop Coat-IT dries to a real hard and slippery finish. Like any Epoxy Coating, in my opinion, you could mix a non skid product in the mixture. It will be a little hard to spread, but when the mixture hardens, it should leave you a Non-Skid Finish.
Answer: I used it on the bottom of my aluminum pram (boat) so it would protect it and slide over rocks.
Answer: I use it for swamp cooler repair. It is very slick, but I think after application while still wet you could put sand on top ,and pat some into the epoxy before it cures. It already A very thick mixture, not sure what mixing sand in would do to the mixing, and curing process
Q:
Can i use this to paint a fiberglass tub?
Answer: You can use it on Aluminum, wood, fiberglass, steel or ferrocement
Q:
Can you use this inside as outside of boat? My 14' aluminum sears gamefisher leaks and I want to seal it.
Answer: i used it on the inside and outside so far so good. i cleaned the boat down to bare metal then wiped it down with alcohol seems to be holding good. the goop is a little runny.
Answer: You can. Mine never sealed but I didn't turn my boat over. If you turn the boat upside down to do the bottom it should allow it to flow into any openings.
Answer: I guess you can..But for the inside u should maybe consider Flex Seal.More easy to work with as other sets really fast...Flex seal spreads better..
Q:
Could this be applied to rubber? An inner tube?
Answer: Probably not since its not flexible.
Answer: No, won't work.
Q:
Anyone use this to paint a frame or skid plate on a truck? Seems like a good option?
Answer: I used it on a al boat and it was awesome!...I would think skid plate would be perfect
Q:
Is this sealer self leveling? Like if i pour it in the the keel at the front of the boat and jack up the front would it run all the way to the back?
Answer: I don't think so......I had to apply with brush and the working time is about 30 mins...It could run but only a short distance...Regards, Bigfish
Answer: It is too thik for self leveling. I don't think it will run all the way back.
Answer: Dont think so,I used a paint brush that i cut down to move the product around the hull
Answer: It is pretty runny but don't know if it would go that far.
Q:
Could this product be used to waterproof a small wood porch?
Answer: Using this product to paint (waterproof) your porch would not be a cost effective option.
Answer: Yes. I used it to seal a leaky wooden boat so it would probably work well. Epoxys all do a good job in sealing wood.
Answer: While it could be used for such a purpose, I think there are several cheaper products from Behr or Rust-Oleum that I would use before trying this product.
Answer: It might work, but I think it could be slick if wet unless you sprinkled some sand around to keep from slipping.
Q:
can you thin it down?
Answer: Hi, The Coat it is a sealer and is pretty thin already, It goes on like thick paint and will run when applied to vertical service. I read the can again, looking for any info about thinning. The only thing I could find was you can clean tools with Acetone or lacquer thinner prior to the epoxy setting up. Just remember, it is already pretty thin.
Answer: No idea, but I would guess you could. For my purposes I wanted it to be thick to protect rivets and aluminum on bottom of my jon boat. The reason I used Goop was it was strong, thick and tough.
Answer: no
Q:
Does the larger can dryout if its exposed to air without the smaller can being added? Mine arrived leaking from the top.
Q:
Is this epoxy flexible at all ? Can it be applied to a primed surface or should it go on bare aluminum? What does it say on the directions?
Answer: https://www.tapplastics.com/uploads/pdf/Coat%20It%20Literature.pdf
Q:
Does this paint contain biocidal copper compounds? The reason I ask is because copper interact with zinc to cause corrosion.
Answer: No it does not contain biocide or copper. it contains Graphite and Kevlar fibers mixed in with the epoxy
Q:
How much surface area does 2lbs. cover
Answer: Not much. I used 2 cans on the bottom of a 17' (average width of 3' for calc. sake) long metal drift boat and barely got the job done. It is difficult to work with and temperature is key. Warmer is better. Love the material though. Awesome when done! I wish I had 3 cans when I did my job. For the cost, I'd buy an extra can just in case.
Answer: I cannot answer question because I've not applies as of yet. However, I do feel that I will need to purchase more
Q:
Can I use it to seal an outdoor tile mosaic? Also, it is clear?
Answer: It seals out water very well,as I used it to repair leaks in an evaporative cooler, but it is not clear,it is a rather dark translucent charcoal color after mixing.
Answer: I would not use it for that purpose just because it is not clear it is more of a gray color because it is mixed with graphite.
Answer: It is not clear. It's more of a grey color.
Q:
Does this have any solvents that will disolve foam? I want to use on foam boat.
Answer: It's a two part epoxy, I would test a spot before using it on the whole boat.
Q:
Is it possible to add color, like yellow?
Answer: My color ended up being a dark grey. I rather doubt you could add enough color to make a difference.
Answer: Was great worked like it says thanks
Answer: you can try, however pigments often cause the epoxy to not harden corectly
Q:
I coated my fiber and it's sticky now. Temperature went above 70F already. Why?
Answer: it takes 2 hours before it begins to harden--hardened in six hours
Answer: it was used inside on wall to patch up a hole. We had no problems with it. I would suggest to contact the manufacturer and ask the company
Q:
buenas amigo, de que color es el sellador? se mezclan ambos para su uso como tal o se aplica cualquier de los dos?para pegar vidrio, sin dejar mancha¡¡
Q:
Does this product adhere to concrete or brick? Can it be used for this application?
Answer: It could, however, this particular product is more for wood/metal/plastic applications.. You'd be better off using a masonry epoxy for brick or concrete projects.
Answer: We used this product to coat the outside bottom of a fishing boat.
Answer: yes.
Q:
Can this be used to treat and seal rust?
Answer: use rust reformer
Q:
I'm painting raw balsa plywood. i'm on the fence if i can get one 2lb can to work for my entire project. will this stuff go further if i prime first?
Answer: No. This is a great in very tough product. Easy to use and I would recommend it. However you prepriming the serFace Will not make it go farther. The stuff is awesome but it does not go far. Get 2 two pounders and you might have enough to cover
Answer: I do not think so. It goes on pretty thick.
Q:
Will the 2 pound kit be enough for a 14 foot boat
Answer: If you do only the seams you should have enough. i did my 12 foot boat i had some leftover.
Answer: For bellow the waterline yes if done evenly 2 coats use thin roller or short stiff brush
Answer: If you are going to coat the entire bottom, I
Answer: No
Answer: It will be a close call
Q:
is it possible to apply this with a paint gun?
Answer: No it’s super thick I found the best way to apply this is with a cheap paint brush
Answer: No it has the viscosity of molasses and will harden in 15-20 minutes
Answer: Hi!
Answer: Seriously doubt that, hard enough to just brush it on, THICK.
Q:
I have an aluminum pontoon boat that I want to put a spray coat of zinc chromate primer on first, then this epoxy. Will the epoxy adhere well?
Answer: I had problems with it cracking on my boat.
Answer: Suggest you contact the Coat-It folks as I do not know....
Answer: Yes, I used this on my boat and it worked great.
Q:
How well would this product stand up to a dishwasher (i.e. would a wood spoon coated in this stuff split, crack, or flake)? Very High Humidity, 120°F
Answer: I sorry I have not used it yet and I do not have a dishwasher.
Answer: Most likely the expansion and contraction over time could cause some issues.
Q:
Would this work in a whirlpool type tub? I have tried epoxy paints that don't adhere well, and 2 part epoxies that cannot be applied vertical
Answer: That depends on the whirlpool tub material: it can be stainless steel, polyblend plastic or fiberglass. The Goop has a consistency of watery oatmeal and will slide down vertical surfaces unless you keep brushing it up until it dries, a very difficult task. In order to get it to stick you have to prep the tub material. It should be lightly roughened with a fine emery cloth and cleaned with acetone or a solvent that will not harm your tub material. I have not had luck patching a polyblend surface with Goop. Well roughened fiberglass, aluminium & wood is what I have had good success. Good luck!
Q:
Would this be appropriate for refinishing a bathroom sink that has become very porous and easily stained?
Answer: Doubtful. Too soft. Might consider a two part marine epoxy paint.
Answer: I wouldn't recommend it for that.
Q:
Can u put this on none waterproof flooring????
Answer: Yes. You can do it.
Q:
Can this be injected to fix softspots on a hobie cat 16 its. I dont see why not. Please verify
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I'm no expert, but their are better products out there to fix soft spots in hobie cat and sailboats. This product is some kind of resin with coloring and acts like a sealer and paint.
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: You might want to consider Goop putty if I is a small hole then the Coat it. If it's made of fiberglass it's better to repair with fiberglass.
Q:
I have made a camping box that unfolds to make a counter and holds supplies. It's roughly 18"x18"x30" plywood box. Will 2lb kit cover inside and out?
Answer: I think you would have enough. I covered the bottom of a 12 ft boat.
Answer: I think it should, I painted the bottom and side of a row boat..
Answer: It should do it....
Answer: Probably
Q:
Do you have to mix a hardener or anything with this product?
Answer: Yes...the hardener is in the small can. Mix 7 to 1 by weight, not volume! Better to mix small batches. It hardens fast.
Answer: Yes. After stirring them both up real good you pour the small can into the big one & mix the two really well before application. Hope this helped answer your question.
Answer: i dont' know because i haven't had time to use it yet
Q:
Appx how many gallons is the 8lb kit?
Answer: I believe it's a one gallon large can with some room for adding the smaller can of hardener. I used smaller containers to mix smaller quantities of the proper ratio.
Answer: 1 gallon.
Q:
Can I use this to fiberglass a surfboard?
Answer: it would probably cost you $100 to coat an entire surfboard. it would require a lot of sanding since the texture will be like sharkskin
Q:
Would this be a good product to use on underside of a mower deck?
Answer: No I dont think so. Because ,you might hit a rock or something hard and the mower would cause a hard impact , I feel it would cause this product to chip off and cause serious damage to the blades or possibly hit however is operating the mower. This stuff sets up extremely hard .
Answer: It may work well if you treat it as a two surface glue. The surface of the mower deck and the surface of some shaped aluminum flashing. The flashing is easily cut to fit the repair area and will give better protection against flying soil and rock particles. Remember to coat both surfaces and apply pressure to the repair during the curing phase.
Q:
Can you apply this on the inside of a boat Hull after fiberglass is done
Answer: I don't know but this seems redundant and expensive as fiberglass is already waterproof and much cheaper if done correctly. Use this where you cannot use fiberglass such as an aluminum boat with leaky rivets. This seeps down into the small cracks etc. And dries rock hard yet flexible enough not to crack when the aluminum flexes.
Answer: I would think that would work just fine
Answer: I haven't done it, but I think it would work fine, seems to stick to about anything.
Q:
How much would it take to cover a 6'x12' balcony
Answer: I wouldn't use this stuff we used it to cover the bottom of a 20' pontoon boat which is 20'x 8' and it took 5 cans!!! We ended up using on our next boat that flex seal and though it was twice the cost it only took 2 cans and and covered better
Answer: You better buy two LARGE cans. That's 8 lb. Size.
Product reviews of Amazing GOOP 5400040 Coat-It Waterproof Epoxy Sealer & Protector - 2 lb Kit, Dark Gray
Ronnie : Worked perfectly
Pulled a sunken boat out of a pond last year and now ita floating and useable thanks to this stuff
Paul : Five Stars
It works great for questionable rivets.
David : GOOP water proof epoxy --slow cure -good result
Mix together and then pours and works like thickness of very thick honey. Excellent for horizontal surface.
I fixed a cracked fiberglass bathtub bottom ( until I can replace the whole shower/tub unit). Dries firm and
waterproof. I dont know---vertical use might be possible with multiple coats without running.
Cures slowly so you can control the viscosity during usage----cures quite slowly.
===Ratio control Mix-- have to be careful unless using entirely both cans of two different sizes.
I am gonna keep on hand all the time for various usages. color is nearly black.
cliqster : Great stuff!
Once I mixed the resin and hardener together, I had about 20-25 minutes of working time at 75 degrees. It started getting thick toward the end. In hindsight, I should have bought the 8 pound container instead of the 2 pound. The 20 sq ft coverage held pretty accurate for me. I ended up needing 24 sq ft so needed to buy another 2 pounds to finish all of my 12 foot aluminum boat rivets... but could have had 8 pounds for not much more.
Kerry Avery : Great stuff
Stuff rocks up super quick. Got to be totally ready to use this stuff
G1yp4.1337 : Great stuff for aluminum boat sealing
Sealed the rivets on a 14 foot meyer aluminum rowboat. Great stuff. I just brushed it over seams n rivets. Painted boat with farm impliment paint. Tough as nails and no leaks
Annette Fitzsimons : Durable, does the job
Bought it for my husband. He says it’s a great product. Good durability, and it works like it says it does.
Brock Fergusson : Covers well
Great stuff
Amazon Customer : Coverage not great, prepare the surface.
used it to seal the wooden window frames of a 1961 house, painted over, sealed for life!!
renee faust : Works great
Had an aluminum boat that leaked back. After using the epoxy that boat doesn't leak.
Jared Reese : Excellent!
This is amazing stuff. It dries incredibly hard and does a great job sealing rivots on aluminum boats.
Mark : Coat-It 2# Kits
The 2# kits are great for small projects. I wanted to cover the bottom of my 8' alum pram.
I thought one kit would work. Needed a second kit to complete and is a very thin layer.
Product was easy to mix and apply, but make sure to work in the recommended temp range for curing. I had to add a space heater when the temps dropped.
I have not tested the pram after application for slip and lubricity as advertised. I will do that this week. I have another fiberglass mini driftboat that I plan to repair and do the same coating if it works on the pram.
Nick seifert : Fixed my leaky Jon boat!
My Jon boat would leak a little water here and there. I flipped it over and grinder around the rivets and applied this on the whole bottom of boat no longer leaks! Also very tough stuff! I do recommend this! It dries a brown color not silver!
Debbie F. Hernandez : Five Stars
Good stuff!

Absolute crap starting to come off with just the water going over it second time I was out tried to fix the leak at work the first time I was out nice and dry second time I went out water in the boat
renee faust : Works great
Had an aluminum boat that leaked back. After using the epoxy that boat doesn't leak.
jason : Amazing
This product does exactly what it says it will do. Went on easily with a short brush. Perfect for my aluminum boat bottom.
Juan C. : Works great
Used it on a 1960's aluminum boat and haven't had any leaks.
Carole M. Henderson : Actually stopped the leak!
Was a little hard to work with, but no harder than most products similar to it. Also was cheaper than most. Did it stop a bad leak in my little jon boat. YES! For the first outing anyway. Was having to bail out water every hour of about 2 inches deep before using. After: no bailing at all. I can't speak of how long it will last, but my feet were always soaked after fishing. Went home with dry feet.
MountainHawk : Nice price!
Sealed up the boat!
Andrew P. : Would highly recommend.
I used this epoxy to fix a few large holes in the bottom of an aluminum john boat. After making the repair and waiting overnight, the boat was ready the next morning. I used the boat for the week without a single leak. Would highly recommend.
J & M : Good Price, Poor Results
I'm unimpressed. It did not cover nearly as much surface area as it states in the description, and only provided a barely adequate coating. I bought the 2 lbs. kit to waterproof a 30 gallon wooden tank I built, but it still has substantial leaks. While I have used other two part epoxies before, this is my first with this band. Perhaps I did it wrong this time... although I doubt it. I will have to buy another kit and give it a second coat; it's a good price, but you do get what you pay for.
Christine Barnes : Great stuff!!
Coated the bottom of my gheenoe and it is slightly thinner than I expected but it has a fantastic thick coat upon drying. Will probably order another 2lb to put a second coat on but seems to be 10x the product of flex seal!
David Lawhorn : Good product
Good sealer for my aluminum boat. Product does very nice. Shipped quick.
Michael : Garbage, trash
Trash, trash, trash. This product is a runny mess, it ruined my project!!! Stay away!!!!
Aaron : Great product!
Coated the entire bottom of my old jon boat after using Total Boat epoxy to seal up the leaks. Works like a champ.

Sealed all the leaking rivets in my boat with no issues. Now my bilge pump never runs even if I'm on the water all day.
PrimeShoppers : Easy to work with
Very easy to mix and apply. Cheaper than some alternatives out there. Many possible applications.
Grady Honeycutt : Redid my Rudder
Put on 2 coats, it's very thick and hard, love it, will use more !

David Coleman : Very poor quality material
Worst epoxy material I have ever used. Doesn't mix completely. Applies like tar. One side of boat dried in 10 hours. The other took three days. Horrible surface. Never ever again. (I have successfully put barrier coats on several vessels using other systems (esp. West System) and they worked perfectly.
james m patton : I would like to see a refund
Absolute crap starting to come off with just the water going over it second time I was out tried to fix the leak at work the first time I was out nice and dry second time I went out water in the boat
Nobu : This sticky stinky junk is amazing!
I think I could use this and a box of toothpicks and build a 14ft fishing boat.
Mike condo : Don't bother with this, use gluvit instead
Would have given 0 stars if possible, product doesn't cover the advertised area, won't cure and looks awful. Don't waste your time or money on this, try gluvit instead

Great stuff
James W. Fonseca : Good product
Very good product. Works as described, Makes a hard as rock coating on rotten wood but you really have to work fast because once mixed, it starts hardening in minutes in the can!
Kim M. : Does the job!
Bought several cans to cover pontoons and we did two coats just to be sure. It covered every corrosion mark on the pontoon. Only thing is each can was a little different in color. Didn’t care because it was below the water line. Love this stuff!
david : Messy
Messy product and drys way to fast does not give you time to work with it
Chrissy gagnon : Great for aluminum boat hulls
Awesome stuff seals it up great and very hard!!
R. McKown : Good epoxy coating but a bit tricky to use
I needed an acid resistant coating for the inside of a plywood battery box I built to hold flooded lead acid batteries. I'm happy with the results I achieved. I will definitely consider using this product again. A couple of caveats and notes about usage:
The biggest problem I had was evenly coating the walls of the box. The epoxy on the walls flowed downward with gravity. As a result, the floor ended up with extra material, and the thickness of the coating is markedly reduced at higher positions along each wall. Enough coating remains even at the top of the walls to preclude the need for a second coat. But a different strategy is required to do a really nice job. Perhaps it is doing each wall separately, or perhaps it is applying multiple very thin coats. I'm not sure, but before I try coating vertical surfaces again I'll want to do some more reading, or experimentation. Based on my experiences, I believe the working and cure times for this epoxy are conservative, that is perhaps actual times are longer than published times.
The second issue I had was with bubbling. I experienced some bubbles breaking the surface of the coating on the walls of the battery box, leaving some pock marks in the coating. These imperfections aren't terribly obvious, and for my needs they don't matter. If I wanted a quality finish, I would have been disappointed, done some sanding, and tried a second coat. By comparison, however, the floor turned out great -- no bubbles there, only some variation in thickness due to the aforementioned flows from the walls. I'm not sure if the bubbles were caused by the method of application, or the mixing. Because the floor of the box turned out so nicely, I tend to think its probably the former.
Adhesion to plywood is excellent, and I didn't really do much to prepare the surface beyond wiping it down with a damp cloth beforehand to remove any loose particulates. I had drilled a couple of 7/8" holes in the back wall of the box for venting prior to coating. The coating pooled at the bottom of the holes (the plywood is 3/4" thick), so they were no longer round. I used a hole saw after cure to fix that problem. The bond between wood and epoxy is excellent -- the epoxy did not chip or split away from the wood as I drilled it.
One last point: the estimated coverage seems right on if not slightly better than published.
Jeff : Great to protect your lawn mower deck.
This goop is awesome. I used it to coat the underside of my lawn mower deck 2 years ago and it is holding up great. I highly recommend using this to coach your lawn mower deck. It will never rust again.
Brock Fergusson : Covers well
Great stuff
Annette Fitzsimons : Durable, does the job
Bought it for my husband. He says it’s a great product. Good durability, and it works like it says it does.
George R. : Great Product
Hard to apply but a product that actually does what it promises.
R. Langston : Excellent aluminum bottom coat !
Although it provides a very tough coating that I used on a pontoon boat you have only 20 minutes before it sets up.
Ruthie : It worked
I ran out of hardener before I could use all the other. I like the way it covered and no more leaks on my boat
