Questions about Betts Old Salt Premium Cast Net for Bait Fish with Utility Box
Q:
Will this work on women? Has anyone tried?
Answer: I have tried this net twice and only caught 1 woman. She did manage to tear the net. I called customer service and they were kind enough to send a replacement very quickly. I would recommend as long as you get the 10 foot so she can be well covered.
Answer: Haven't tried, but I'd recommend at least an 8 foot or maybe even 10 foot for that.
Answer: I would look at the laws in your state first but I would imagine if you practiced catch and release it would be fine. Just make sure you release from a safe distance.
Answer: Catching them is easy. Getting rid of them is more difficult.
Answer: The problem with that is you might catch her less desirable friend also.
Answer: I've seen a mature woman chew right through this net. Recommend the thicker net
Answer: You have to chum with a lot of liquor!
Answer: just get a wooden mallet. you don't have to run away
Answer: it will just be sure to practice throwing and also practice how your gonna run away
Answer: Now that’s funny love it !!!!
Q:
Is this good for catching tropical fish (tangs, puffers, etc)? we are looking to take a net to the fl keys to expand our saltwater tank.
Answer: I would not recommend it. Its a heavy net and the material may be to rustic for small tropical fishes as it could hurt them or kill em as you pull.
Answer: Yes it will catch them. I even caught parrot fish with this net.
Answer: No, this is for catching bait or food fish. You would risk injuring display fish. You need as suction capture tube, they sell them at the larger dive shops on Key Largo. Read the catch regulations though regarding catch limits, seasons and quantity you are allowed to posses.
Q:
Will this work for catching schools of bunker?
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
Is the net nylon?
Answer: The Betts model 25-4 I purchased is a MONO cast net, not a nylon net. Purchased specifically to catch mud minnows and small pinfish in small pockets at shoreline without having their dorsal fins catch in the netting when removing them. It also is easier to shake debris and water from the mono. Nylon thread nets have to be cleaned of weeds often. Check out the BETTSTACKLE.COM website.
Answer: No,not nylon, but monofilanent. I only saw the first answer when ordering and it was made of mono when I got it. What a disappointment!
Answer: The Betts "Old Salt" series cast nets are NOT nylon but are constructed of monofilament
Answer: Yes - works quite well...
Answer: Yes
Q:
does it pull up the weights to the center to trap the fishes
Answer: The weights pull to the center and come up the middle leaving the fish trapped in the netting. When you get the net in with the fish in it, you hold the cone and drop the weights down to release the fish. I have a big round plastic tub that I dump the fish, or shrimp in so they don't scatter all over the place. You can find the tubs at Lowe's, or Walmart. The one I like has the rope handles.
Q:
Is the 6ft a 12ft diameter?
Answer: Yes sir
Answer: Yes!
Q:
Is this cast net is 6ft. Tall?
Answer: Yes, when it's close it has 6 ft and a 12ft diameter once it's opem
Answer: Yes it is. It has a 6' radius.
Q:
Can this net be use to catch larger fish?
Answer: Yes it can, however larger fish move faster, so you have to throw it with good technique. I use mine to catch mullet, which average 1 to 1 1/2 pounds each.
Q:
Is this net (or any net) made of 100% fluorocarbon? looking for a net that is (nearly) invisible water for use in an aquarium. very low strength ok.
Answer: this net is a mono cast net, used for catching baitfish. An excellent cast net.
Answer: This is the wrong type of net for your purposes.
Q:
If used in a small lake to get shad and minnows for bait what would work better the 6 or 8 foot size?
Answer: I would get the six foot. The larger the net I have noticed, the easier it is to get tangled. The six ft is plenty. Another good thing about these nets is that they have plenty of sturdy robe built into them so you can cast a good distance
Answer: Also get yourself some gloves. Sometimes the minnows get stuck in the net and the gloves with help
Answer: The bigger the net the more fish, the harder to throw, the more you lose if it gets snagged.
Answer: which ever one you can handle the best
Q:
would this net catch 2-3" shiner minnows for perch fishing
Answer: I call it 2 to 3 inch shad with it but they are a little bigger you might want the one quarter inch
Answer: Yes it will. The net works very well cathing bait in shallow water. Some of the smaller fish may get gilled but overall its a good bait fish net.
Answer: I think you would need a net with a tighter weave. Minnows that small would probably get stuck all through the net by their gills.
Answer: Hey ZIM A B S O L U T E L Y Absolutely my Man !!!
Answer: I believe it should.
Q:
do these nets have lead or plastic coated steel wieghts
Answer: The weights are solid lead and not plastic coated.
Answer: The one's that I've purchased have lead wieghts.
Answer: Lead
Answer: Lead
Q:
Is the net monofilament?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Yes, I believe most if not all contain mono
Answer: yes
Q:
can i use this on a pier in california?
Answer: You can't sneeze in California so I doubt it. California probably has a ban on them and a health ban on rich caught in them. Damn democrats
Answer: you know I have been using it here in southern nevada in lake mead and southern utah in different lakes and havent had any problem with the fish & game wardens ..BUTTTT CALIFORNIA is a different story it seems like california has there own rules in anything and for everithing..sorry man difficult for me
Answer: Yes, but you may have to add additional cord for the extra height of the pier.
Answer: i throw my net off the front of my jonboat i guess it depends how high the pier is not more than 5 /6 ft high and it takes some practice
Q:
what is the diameter?
Answer: The diameter is selected from the drop down box on the pricing page. This net is available in 4' and 6' diameters today.
Q:
how strong is the rope
Answer: Rope are really very strong no mater how big fish still u pull up but by the biggest net is batter
Answer: Very strong. I've lifted up at least 10 kilograms of fingerlings several times with no problem
Answer: I've never heard of a cast net rope breaking before. So it's strong enough
Q:
Are the lead weights covered with plastic?
Answer: The ones covered with rubber or plastic are usually steel weights.
Answer: ARE THEY REAL LEAD WEIGHTS OR STEEL WEIGHTS?
Answer: Sorry this took so long email got lost. The answer is no.
Answer: no they are not. It is a good easy to throw net. Soak it in Fabric Softner
Answer: NO. Very few cast nets are. The ones that are you will pay a premium price for
Answer: No
Q:
why is pricing shown as 33.65 - 75.41 and there is not a unit at the lowest price?
Q:
Will rhis work for catching bullhead
Answer: Never tried it for bullhead I assume u mean freshwater caddies (small catfish)
Q:
where is the warranty?
Answer: unless u throw the net on top of oysters u don't need a warranty. it's a well constructed net
Answer: The net is made very well ,I am sure if you have any problem with it they would work with you.
Q:
How big of a fish can you catch with this?
Answer: You can catch any regular size fish with this net. I use it to catch bait, mullet, minnows, shad, shrimp and crab. I regulary catch 12-15 inche mullet. Some of the mullet that i catch weights from 2lbs to 4lbs. So really the net is strong enouht to catch small trout and and other small game fish. Great, only thing i don't like is that it tangles too much. But i can deal with net, its better than others i have owned.
Answer: This product is used for catching live bait Occasionly you might catch larger fish. I have caught fish up to 14” quite by accident
Q:
Does this product contain any lead?
Answer: Yes, all the weights are lead I have to assume. Just like fishing weights.
Q:
How long is the throwing line? I am planning to use it from a fishing pier that sits pretty high.
Q:
From the reviews i taking that this is not a monofiloment net?
Answer: The net I received is monofiloment.
Q:
what is the net radius
Answer: My cast net radius is 6 feet. Cast nets are sold with the radius in the description. I purchased a 6 foot Betts Old Salt Premium Cast Net, therefore the radius is 6 feet.
Answer: I bought the 4 ft radius. I think they also carry a 6 ft radius.
Answer: They pull down box measurements are the radius, not diameter. Cast net sizes are generally reported by their radius measurement.
Answer: 6' radius 12' diameter
Q:
Do u have seahorse machins ?
Q:
Does it come with 3 items ?
Answer: No, no. You are thinking of the Genie in a Bottle in housewares, it comes with three wishes. The net comes in a box that you can put other stuff in once you remove the net. What was the third thing you were "wishing" for?
Q:
6' ? Is the radius or diameter?
Q:
how does it work
Answer: It works very well.
Answer: It works well. Used it in Cancun. It just takes a little practice
Q:
Is this cast net made of monofilament?
Q:
What is up with the 1 picture. Can we get a close up of the netting at least? GD
Answer: Its monofilament fishing line ,they aren't trying to hide anything .Its well made.
Q:
Will it catch small pin fish?
Answer: Used for mullet minnows. Pin fish are sometimes caught
Answer: Yes, I use mine primarily for finger mullet and shrimp.
Answer: yes. really good net. I only wish I could throw it better.
Answer: yes
Q:
Does this net have the traditional slim lead weights around the leadline or those new (Non lead) bulkier weights
Answer: It has the real lead weights.
Answer: looks like lead to me
Answer: lead weights.
Answer: Nope.
Q:
Are the weights made of lead?
Answer: Yes
Q:
How big are the holes on the net?
Answer: The holes on the net are 3/8 of an inch.
Answer: They're 3/8 of an inch.
Q:
What country is it made in? I cant seem to find that anywhere in description and details.
Answer: Couldn't find where Betts trademark has factory in the USA. Countries who make majority of cast nets are China, Japan and India.
Answer: I like to believe they are made in the town of bikini bottom which is in the Pacific Ocean. Many of the folks who make the nets hang out at the krusty crab after work to discuss better ways to make the nets so they pick up less sponges off the bottom of the ocean. The square sponges are the hardest to get out of a net.
Answer: I don’t know. Probably China, but it’s held up well.
Q:
is the lead covered in plastic
Answer: No it's actual lead weights
Answer: no they are not
Answer: No it is not
Answer: No
Answer: no ma'm
Answer: No it's not.
Q:
Why does it take so long to ship
Q:
Does the 6ft cast net have real lead weights
Answer: Yes it does. I have tried the newer nets with non lead weights, and I didn't like them. They sink much slower thus losing more fish that can swim away before it covers them.
Q:
How big is the eye of the net?
Answer: Y’know, the thing about a shark, he’s got lifeless eyes, black eyes, like a doll’s eyes. When he comes after ya, he doesn’t seem to be livin’ until he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white, and then – aww,.......
Q:
Does 4' mean a 4' radius?
Answer: Yes
Q:
What is the test poundage or diameter of the line?
Answer: Nobody really posts that info but it's the most durable net I have bought and I've tried a ton of them . Most are garbage.
Answer: Not sure. I use net for bait mullet minnows etc. more than adequate
Answer: I don’t know. I gave it as a gift.
Q:
Would this work on catching Shad 1 inch size
Answer: Smaller shad get caught in this net, but they get stuck in the netting. You have to push, pull, or tear them apart to get them out of the netting. You would need a smaller mesh to catch that size without a high mortality rate.
Answer: yes ,this is a 3/8" mesh ,we have caught a lot of small fish with ours,we love it!
Answer: Yepit sure will if you can throw it
Q:
How many pounds of weight can the 4' net hold if it was tied in a knot just above the weights?
Q:
Doyou have Throw wnet 6ft x 2.4 hole
Answer: No

Product reviews of Betts Old Salt Premium Cast Net for Bait Fish with Utility Box
Amazon Customer : Great starter net
Got it for our son. It was small enough for him to learn on. He loves it.
John of all trades : Five Stars
Worked good until I got it snagged and lost it about 50 cast in...
Amazon Customer : Five Stars
now if i could just throw it
PV Turner : Not to specs..
Out of the box review: For it to be a "6ft" radius cast net its pretty correct (70", not 72"), BUT when it comes to diameter at a full pancake (spread wide open) it barely reaches over 8' (102", not 144"). That means it doesnt even open 75% of its radius to diameter ratio.. But overall the net seems to be a good, quality built net. Im going to try soaking it in a bucket with softner and water for a couple hours to see if that helps break it in. Will be back for later review.
Joey : Not what they used to be.
Before purchasing this, please check your State's department of natural resources website, or eregulations website. The 6ft. version (I e., 12 ft. diameter) is not legal in some states (2019). I purchased the 6ft. version. I'm 6'1" well built, and I really struggled using this in the surf. It was easier off of jetties. My net had a flaw however. After the first few casts, the monofilament line that goes through the net got so tangled that the net doesn't open properly anymore. There seems to be a design issue that makes the net flimsy, rather than tight, they way it should be and definitely the way they used to be made. It could be that I just got a flawed product. But this one is going to have to go in the trash
Stephen R Smith : High quality, reasonable price!
I'm still learning how to use this cast net. It seems to be very high quality, the few times I have tried it out, it worked just like it's supposed to. I plan to learn how to use this more effectively and then we'll be moving up in size probably to a 10 or 12 foot net
Pablo J Torres : If you are buying this for kids to use then yes, go ahead and buy it.
I’ve used this met only a handful of times.... but there is a reason for that. Although I wasn’t expecting much from this item due to the price I paid, I was still hoping it to be made of a better quality. Not impressed at all.
Jacob : Would recommend 100%

good net
Jacob : Would recommend 100%
I really enjoy this net. Fits nicely in my smaller tackle box. It’s helped me catch countless amounts of bait. It’s not the biggest but it does the job!
Ashley : Love this net, perfect to start learning
I really like the weight and the diameter of the 6 foot. I'm a newbie so after watching a few videos and trying it out, I was able to catch at least a hundred peanut bunker from a pier. It's really fun seeing tbh em get caught and swim up towards the surface as the net sinks. The net is really durable so far, I've only used it about 5 times this past season. I would say that you should definitely give it a good wash after use to prevent salt residue and bad smells
Surfer4Hire : Poor Quality Cast Net, Use As a Junker
This certainly is not the Bett's that I knew 20 years ago. The monofilament is so stiff that you cannot load the net quickly and cleanly. The lead line is a bit on the light side, so not recommended for anything over a few feet if you need fast sinking. The braille lines are uneven and the horn is very constricted. The lead line uses poor quality material and started falling apart after a half dozen casts, and these were all over sandy areas with no debris. This net can serve one purpose; the price point is just right for a junker net that you don't mind throwing on rocky areas or oyster beds. I would only think of this net as disposable. If you are looking for a good quality cast net, that's easy to open, and constructed well, spend the extra money on a Baitbuster or custom cast net.
Jacob : Would recommend 100%
I really enjoy this net. Fits nicely in my smaller tackle box. It’s helped me catch countless amounts of bait. It’s not the biggest but it does the job!
MyRating : Four Stars
Should have purchased a smaller net
Pablo J Torres : If you are buying this for kids to use then yes, go ahead and buy it.

Amazon Customer : Durability
New as described. Did it use it yet
Craig Clay : Excellent choice
Durable and cast great. Good for shallow waters under 2-3ft
Mitchell Q. : Great Surf Net
Never used anything larger than a 5' net. Soaked this one in fabric softener and it throws great. Extra long rope allows for longer throws into the surf too, which makes a huge difference when trying to net mullet. Some of the tie ends are left long, but spend a few minutes clipping them off and you it will save you a lot of time when prepping the net to throw. Very pleased with this net so far. It's large enough to get you great coverage and still user friendly.
Rob : Love it. It was just what I was looking ...
Love it. It was just what I was looking for. I bought another net and it was torn when I opened it. I've owned several nets and this is the size that is best for casting off a pier for bait fish. Not too small, not so crazy big you can not handle it but it is on the big size so I would say not for beginners. Don't need to be a pro but should have some experience before buying a net this size. Weights are on the smaller side but there are so many of them it actually feels heavier than my old net that had larger weights. The rope at the bottom that forms the huge circle is white nylon type rope rather than the plastic black weave rope that comes undone and frays so easily. The black type has been on every type of net I have owned so I am interested on how this will work.
Rope is very very very very very very very very very long. Did I mention the rope is long?
B. Warren : Five Stars
Easy to use. We will get the larger size later on as we get more practice.
Amazon Customer : Good net!
Seems good enough! Waiting till it cools down to use it!
rog : Good quality. Note that 6ft refers to the radius ...
Good quality. Note that 6ft refers to the radius and NOT the diameter. Too bad they didn't make that clear. This net is a bit large to handle if you are not practiced at it. I would by the smaller 5ft net if I had it to do over.
GMan : But the construction is very nice. We
Haven't used it. But the construction is very nice. We;ll see.
chris tollis : Super good net! I give 7 brown thumbs????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Excellent net for catching shads and Sunny’s. I’ll toss a 6” live sunny and wait for a super fat stinky sea donkey whisker cat!! Master baiting for giant behemoth scarred up one-eyed Willy whales is totally kick ass especially at brush when there are no scumbags there killing horses!
