The smokers are specifically made to have a gap. It allows for minimal air flow and venting that the smoker needs to smoke properly. No more tending the coals every hour when smoking meats; Meco's Combo Water Smoker offers optimal control, longer cook time, and less monitoring than traditional charcoal smokers. Perfect for smoking chicken, fish, and other meats to a savory finish, the combo smoker coils boil water to produce steam and burn wood chips to produce smoke that, together, more efficiently penetrate and flavor meats while they cook. The combo smoker features a removable thermostat control with low, medium, and high settings for smoking just about anything, from thin strips of sockeye to thick beef briskets. The smoker plugs into standard household outlets and converts quickly into an electric, lock-and-go, portable grill. Two nickel-plated, 15-1/2-inch cooking grids let you cook at different levels. With 351 square inches of cooking surface, there's room to smoke nearly 50 pounds of meat at once. A stainless pan holds 5-1/2 quarts of water to last up to five hours for extended smoking operations. Sliding access doors make it easy to check water levels and add more if necessary. Meco designed this smoker so that you can add wood and water without even removing the cover, so heat loss is minimal and meats are tender. A 1500-watt heating element ensures even heat distribution from top to bottom. Heat-resistant wood handles on the sides and hood mean easy transport and monitoring. And, the grids inside are equipped with durable handles, so there's no messy oven mitt to clean afterward! --Brian Olson

Questions about Americana 2 in 1 Electric Water Smoker that converts into a Lock 'N Go Grill
Q:
When smoking how quickly does the wood burn up and is it easy to replenish it?
Answer: No quicker than any other smoker, and it is very easy to replenish. The silver panels are openings for the smoker. The top one allows you to access meat on the lower grill to check temps, and the bottom one is where you put in your wood chunks.
Answer: It only seemed to last a couple of hours. I did not use a lot. I used a foil type pack. It was easy to drop another pack in. It smoked a lot in the beginning so a lot more was not needed.
Q:
does it have two racks and can you check bottom rack without removing top
Answer: It has 2 racks. The bottom one cannot be checked without removing the top. I use it for smoking, not BBQ'g. Love it! This is the second one I've had; be careful when removing or plugging in the electric cord; it's a bit "tender". Also, I did buy the recommended electric cord with the second one which made a huge difference. Good luck; it's very fun...
Answer: Two racks with wire handles, you do have to take the top rack out to get to the bottom rack. I use a couple of channel lock pliers to lift the top rack out to check the bottom. What I have found is whether you use the top rack or bottom rack the cooking times are the same.
Answer: There are two cooking racks and a bottom rack for wood chips. The second rack does allow a visible check, but to gain physical access to it is a small window so any large items cannot be removed without opening the lid.
Answer: Yes two racks, but the top needs to be lifted to see what is happening on the bottom
Answer: Sorry, I can't help you. I got rid of it long ago. I have a LP gas Brinkman (with a door on the front) that I like MUCH better.
Answer: yes and no
Q:
We bought one for our neighbors very disappointed will not get hot even when we put it on high never got temp higher than 210 degrees, and we tried it
Answer: Yes. We ran into the same thing. You have to let it preheat to 220 or 190 to get anything out of it. Turkey smoker, stick with charcoal. Boston butt, barely got it but after 8 hours, it fell apart. Smoked salmon, perfect.
Q:
Do you have to use wood chips?
Answer: You do not have to use woods chips, but it helps provide a really nice flavor to the food.
Answer: Wood chips are necessary to achieve the smoking action. Simply sprinkle a handful of oak, hickory, mesquite, or cherry wood chips over the burner element. They can be purchased at any supermarket in the seasonal aisle or at any hardware store. Many people soak the wood chips in water for several minutes before using, but it isn't required. Either way, the wood chips will smolder on the element and produce smoke. If your preparing something that needs to smoked a long time, combining wood chunks with the chips will ensure the smoke will continue for an extended length of time.
Answer: You don't have to use wood chips, it's more of a flavoring thing, regular wood is fine.
Answer: I believe you do. They can't be too large as they won't fit. But they'll smoke wonderfully.
Answer: You don’t have to but if you are using as a smoker it does enhance the flavor of the meat
Answer: No. You only use them for the smoke
Answer: If you want to smoke yes.
Answer: No you don’t
Answer: No
Answer: If you want a smoke flavor, you can use wood chips or wood chunks. If you only want to cook your meat with the water evaporating and moistening your meat, you don't have to.
Answer: You do not have to use wood chips if you don't want to. They are mainly to add flavor.
Answer: If you want real smoked flavor you do.
Answer: You do if you want it smoked. If you don't it will be slowly cooked
Answer: not for the grill... but yes for the smoker if you want the flavor.
Q:
Where is it made?
Answer: This smoker is made in the USA, from US and imported components.
Answer: Greenville, TN USA
Q:
Does the grill get hot enough to cook burgers and steaks and leave good grilling marks?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Yes it does a wonderful job of cooking, best grill i ever owned.
Answer: The heating element shorted out after four uses. Poor quality. Bought a masterbuilt smoker. Happy now.
Answer: Yes
Q:
bought as a gift but it is missing heating element. what can I do. can u send me the piece or if u can't do I have to pay shipping to return it ?
Answer: send it back. mine was dented and unusable
Q:
Can you replace the controller with a thermostat that has numerical temp control. such as univen pr100 standard probe thermostat control
Answer: Yes you can certainly use a more accurate control, but you will have to do some tintering. Depending on how much you want to customise the thing you could completely rewire it or just plug it into an external thermostat controller and set the smoker to as high as it will go. You will have to make sure the external controller can handle the power though. The external controller needs to be able to handle 15 amps at 120V
Answer: No you could not replace the controller with a Univen pr100 controller the one that comes with the smoker is a beefier style and not universal.
Q:
Can lava rocks or ceramic briquettes be placed on the bottom without effecting the grill's performance?
Answer: That should not be a problem. I have small lave pieces on the bottom of mine and the heat/smoke from the wood lasts a bit longer
Q:
How long it’s take to smoke meat
Answer: 1 to 2 hours depending on what great setting you have it on and how good you are at keeping up with the wood chips. The wood chips last about 30 mins by themselves with the wood chunks in there too you’ll get smoke longer. But no smoke equals no heart to cook the meat. So If you forget to check on it and it stops smoking it will take ahole longer than expected to cook your food.
Answer: Depends on the specific type and thickness of the meat, however, 2 to 3hrs on high is the average time to reach an internal temp of 165 degrees plus. Pulled pork, etc may take up to 6 hrs or longer. Refer to the online user's guide in pdf. format.
Answer: Depends on what kind of meat and the conditions outside. Small cuts of meat in warmer weather 2-3 hours something like a turkey breast 6-8 hours
Answer: That’s a difficult question. Because it doesn’t take as long to smoke sausage as it does a whole turkey.
Answer: Depends on what meat ur smoking baby back ribs , brisket, pork tenderloin, pork butt, etc. google this question with the type of meat
Answer: I've found that this smoker takes twice as long to smoke as the Brinkman I used to own (for electric). Go to their website for guidelines. Wish Brinkman were still in business.
Answer: Depends entirely on the, weight, size, kind of meat. A large brisket obviouly takes longer than a small one. A complete guide for cooking and smoking, comes with the unit.
Answer: short time to give it a smoke flavor hours to cook
Answer: It depends on the cut and the size of the piece. It could take anywhere from 2 to 8 hours.
Answer: From 2-8 hours or longer, depending on the size of the meat.
Answer: Unless the temp setting is at it's highest it takes a long time. The canister is not tight and it leaks heat at a rapid rate. I would recommend that you look else where beforsettling on this smoker. I am not at all satisfied with mine. JH

Q:
when smoking do you leave the bottom doors partial open? Or leave everything closed except the top vents?
Answer: Put the hood on body of the smoker and open the vent dampers in hood and doors in body slightly to create airflow/draft.
Answer: We leave doors open as needed to obtain the desired flow through the top vents.
Answer: Leave every thing closed until you get to temperature. Then use the vent to control the temp.. Low and Slow is best..
Answer: When using electric coil closed, when using charcoal partially open.
Q:
Can you cook a turkey on this smoker?
Answer: I haven't done it yet, but you should be able to. I plan to do it for Thanksgiving :) I've cooked ham and pork and beef. I also did the double up with great results of a 15 pound ham and 10 pound boston butt and it was spectacular. The only concern I have about a Turkey is to get one that doesn't touch the sides.
Answer: Yes, you can cook a turkey but it needs to be unstuffed.
Answer: I would think so. Up to maybe 12-14 lbs; it would take awhile to cook, but would be delicious.
Q:
What's the size of the grilling area? Or the width of the rack?
Answer: 351 Sq in with 2 grill plates. Got in for memorial day 2017 used it 4 times now the heating element is gone out. The grill is trash.
Answer: They are round and are 15" across. There are 2 racks. We love this smoker!
Answer: The grill dia. is 15 inches and there is two of them.
Answer: On the small side. Can do about 4 burgers at a time
Answer: 16 and 1/4"
Q:
just got mine and does not seem to be getting hot temp gauge wont get past warm?
Answer: This unit is a great smoker. Although the temp gage rarely goes past warm the smoker does its job well. We turn the dial on high and it works, great flavor. Also great is the water capacity, we never run out as we have in previous units. I recommend this smoker highly!
Answer: You might want to do a different temperature gauge as ours didn't work very well. To see what temp you have it at.
Answer: The temp gauge it comes with is very inaccurate and reads low. Get yourself a different one.
Q:
Safe to store in outside weather? Will corrode electric components?
Answer: yes, this can be stored outside. Please close the top vents to keep the rain out also, you will need to detach the power cord/ control and store indoors. I also recommend a grill cover to cover the smoker if storing outside.
Answer: I wouldn't store it outside. Not if you leave the electronics in it. Just my personal opinion.
Answer: If you keep it outdoors, you must have a cover over it. The cover should be similar to the air conditioning covers used for winter. I keep mine out year round with a cover and it has no effect on the element. Hope this helps
Answer: The smoker I ordered was dented and unusable. Metal was thin. You will need a cover. Look a Masterbuilt Smoker
Answer: That smoker is a lot of work I don’t recommend it.
Q:
Where can i find the instrutions
Answer: Please see the link below to our website for the owners manual.
Answer: Please click on this link and download the instructions in pdf format.
Answer: The assembly instructions come in the box with the smoker. It was pretty easy to put together and works well..
Answer: Mine came with them. I would message the seller. They can send them to you or even email you a copy.
Answer: Ours came with instruction, so maybe call Amazon or the manufacturer and download or request a copy.
Q:
Who do I talk to about getting my money back my husband used it for the first time tonight and it caught on fire he stopped it before it got crazy ?
Answer: Use the refund to purchase a book on punctuation!
Q:
How long it’s take to finish
Answer: comes together in less than half hour
Q:
Will meat cooked on this grill actually char a little?
Answer: Yes the meat will actually char a little. The bottom of the smoker is a small grill. You can use the top as a smoker and the bottom as a grill.
Answer: haven't grilled on it but without a flame means no char.
Answer: If used as a H20 smoker, the meat will not char.
Answer: Yes! I filled the bottom of the grill around the heat element lava sons and placed cherry wood chips, the meat has picked up amazing smoke favor and stayed smoking for month. I hope you like the smoke flavor though, it is pretty intense.
Answer: Our smoker is made from very thin metal. It smokes great, but your meat will dry out completely. I suggest a different brand of smoker or get a weber and use wood fire only.
Answer: We never were able to use this smoker. It would not retain heat..It did not make a seal in order to obtain proper heat...threw it away...made a better flower pot than a smoker..tried to return for replacement but customer service was horrible to deal with...don't buy..if you have try to return it.
Q:
my new smoker will not heat past mid mild heat can you tell me why?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Mine is the same. I think it is a combination of poor fit of the top on the smoker and the thin steel they used. However, I've yet to have anything other than success. I wrap the top with a fire retardant blanket in the cool weather to trap more heat. I think the built in thermometer is inaccurate, because I always hit my target meat temperature within the typical time frames. 45 min per lb for ribs, for instance.
Answer: In cool windy weather it is a problem. It's just not insulated enough. I build an insulated 4X4 wood frame to surround it. Using that I smoked a small turkey in about 9 hours.
Answer: I purchased a meat/grll thermometer. I placed the probe in the top airhole. Now I can see the temp. It will go into the 200 range fairly fast. The biggest problem I have is getting the sawdust close enough to the burner to make smoke
Answer: Thats the best it will do deal with it or get rid of it . I got rid of mine
Q:
It looks like in grilling mode that it would be basically right on the ground? Is that true? Would you need/want to set it on something?
Answer: This item is made of heavy-duty construction, including the legs upon which it maintains its entire weight. The grilling portion, like most cookers and other types of products with heat producing filaments, should be placed firmly upon non-combustible surfaces such as concrete, etc. There is enough clearance between the grill and the hard surface to eliminate the need to place it on something to eliminate the transfer of extreme heat.
Answer: If the grill is converted into the lock n'go, it would be extremely low to the ground.
Answer: It would be close to the ground. But the legs keep it up 6-8” off the ground.
Answer: It would definitely be low if you didn’t put it on something so it would be up to the user
Answer: Yes
Q:
Is this dual voltage?
Answer: I don't know what you mean. It has one cord that you plug into 110 plugs
Answer: No, unit is 115 volts ac only. But it does a very good job!
Answer: NO.
Answer: no

Q:
Would this unit be safe to use on a wooden deck?
Answer: Yes..isn't that hot and ample air space under unit
Answer: Yes. Those long skinny metal legs can be touched by fingers and not too hot. And on the top, you can grab that handle and carry/move the entire unit with out a glove.
Answer: Its on legs,so it shouldn't be a problem. Meaning it high enough.
Answer: yes. for sure.
Q:
I purchased this last year and the electrical plug broke. Where would I get replacement parts for this?
Answer: We have a website that you can purchase replacement parts. I will provide the link below.
Answer: I no longer have the instructions that came with it but I'm sure they must have a c/s number to contact regarding
Q:
Does it give off a lot of smoke?
Answer: The smoke amount depends on how many chips you put in and how long you soak the chips. We love this smoker it does add that beautiful smoke ring around the meat that most are looking for and it is a great little traveling smoker we take it with us to full hook up camping. We have used it in the middle of winter in a wind break area of our property.
Answer: No, because it never got hot enough to make smoke. This unit is a piece of junk.
Answer: Mine smokes like crazy!!
Answer: unable to use smoker.. it did seal correctly would not build up heat. contacted manufacturer they would not repair or replace so i threw it away...do not buy..
Answer: depends on how much wood you have and how wet it is.
Answer: No, it does not. Even so, you don't want to use it anywhere but outside. Works very well.
Answer: Yes
Q:
I have read on other electric smokers you have to cook meat afterwards. Do you have to on this one? Thanks
Answer: No, I have not had to cook meat after using the smoker. Using the proper cooking times, in conjunction with the ambient temperature, this smoker performs well. I would be more concerned with making sure the right amount of wood used to ensure a good smoke-ring during the initial cooking time.
Answer: The short answer is no. There are some items you would want to sear first, but for the most part I don’t and you can put raw meat in there and it will cook it. Do yourself a favor though, to keep the heat going in this cooker you will need to use both wood chips and chunks. The chips burn very quickly about every 30 mins you will have to put more soaked chips in but the wood chunks stay for a little while longer and keep the smoke/heat going.
Answer: No, the smoke cooks the meat..completely. the only issue we had with this is the thermometer doesn't work. Had it replaced and 2nd one didn't work. Bought an oven thermometer and put inside smoker.
Answer: No, you do not always have to finish cooking the meat in the oven.
Answer: Absolutely Not! This is the second one I have had. The first one lasted almost 10 years. I put chickens on in the morning and they are ready for lunch. Great smoker!
Answer: No , smoking meats low and slow will cook your meat
Answer: No! Use a meat thermometer
Answer: Nope...works great!
Q:
The thermostat on it has ideal and hot where the reading need to be to start smoking chicken. Can the thermostat be replaced with another one.
Answer: I don't know about replacing the thermostat, but I usually smoke my chicken between 180 and 220 degrees.
Q:
Meco Electric Water smoker negative remarks
Answer: I have had this for well over a year, and the only negative is that the paint has peeled from the inside of the smoker's walls and lid. Otherwise, I LOVE it!
Answer: I purchased this for my 34 year old son for Christmas. He LOVES it - such a reseanable price in comparison. I love it when I get to help tasted his newest creations. He doesn't have a negative thing to say about this product.
Answer: I've used it many times with much success. I wish it was as well constructed as the Brinkman models in the same price range. The sliding side door makes it easy to add wood chunks and check meat temps without having to lift the lid and lose all the heat. If you have a specific question, I will be happy to answer.
Answer: I got rid of this several years ago. I do not have anything positive to say about it.
Q:
Can you use this with artificial charcoal?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I do not know what artificial charcoal is....??? Your smoker is electric - you do not need to fuel the smoker with anything other than electricity. You can add wood chips over the heater element to produce smoke.
Answer: You can plug it into your regular electric service and watch it melt away as mine did. Biggest waste I’ve ever bought. Besides the Elon musk flamethrower
Answer: Yes
Q:
Can you controle the temperature?
Answer: I had a hard time in colder temps getting hthe unit to an acceptable cooking temperture. I added charcol brickets in the bottom underneath the element. When it gets colder than say 40, I also have found it beneficial to utilize an insulating blanket around the unit. These two proceedures enable me to control the temp to my satisfaction.
Answer: Yes, there's a variable dial on the electrical connection.
Answer: Not with a great degree of accuracy. I found it difficult at best and in the long run gave the smoker away.
Answer: H,does this smoke cheese?
Answer: Yes. There is a thermostat.
Q:
Help! my new smoker arrived without legs! i unpacked and looked very carefully through the box. no legs! can i buy some legs?
Answer: We would be happy to get some legs sent out to please contact our customer service at 1-800-251-7558.
Answer: Send Amazon a message & they will respond. Or on your booklet that you got with your smoker, call them & tell them. They will make it right. We had a similar problem when we got ours & they shipped the part right away.
Answer: I think you should contact the seller and see if they can send you the legs the package should have come with legs.
Q:
what kind of warranty does his come with?
Answer: This comes with a one year warranty.
Q:
The isstructioin book that came with my electric smoker got misplaced. How do I go about getting a new one?
Answer: Go to meco 5030 electric smoker on google and you can find the instructions
Answer: It looks like you can find it here, but it appears that there is a charge...http://www.aussiegrills.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=smoker
Answer: There is a video manual available now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_ORPREyrVE
Q:
Does the smoker have a pan to put wood chips in while smoking meats?
Answer: The bottom of the smoker serves this purpose. The heating element rests maybe an inch off the bottom, so the wood burns easily. I've used this smoker 20 times or so and have yet needed to clear out the ashes on the bottom.
Answer: No. You place the wood chips on the bottom plate.
Answer: No, it doesn't. The bottom plate serves this purpose. You could also use wood chunks and set them on top of the burner.
Answer: No, you have to put wood chips dirctly on the Electric resistence
Answer: No this is a very cheap quality smoker. I sent mine back for a refund
Answer: No. However, it suggest using foil or what I did was use an aluminium baking dish. http://youtu.be/l3Z_TUmUZb8?list=PLac9Z7pi1Oitbb6OQGvAR6kCpJ3vzXq3E
Q:
Where can you find a replacement bowl?
Answer: I do not think that they are available anymore since the company is out of business.
Answer: Call the company directly. They are very helpful.
Q:
Can i ues lava rock
Answer: Yes you can use grilling lava rocks
Answer: You can. Do not buy this smoker. It doea not work good. Will dry your meat out terribly.
Answer: Yes!
Q:
Order on 17 and had 2 day shipping and still haven't recieved
Answer: Covid-19 has left many shipping departments short-handed. With that in mind, and a little patience and understanding, it will happen.
Q:
Can this smoker easily be maintained at 130 degrees? I am looking at doing dry cured sausages and need to start at 130 and go up from there.
Answer: Yes, but it would need to be Checked. I've built a 4 sided frame with a removable top for my unit. It keeps the elements at bay. the unit is rather thin shelled, but alright for the price.
Answer: Yes! And, the slower, the better...
Answer: Yes it can, with a little practice.
Q:
Cah you use brick charcoal along with the wood chips?
Answer: probably wouldn't get hot enough to burn the charcoal. I've never tried it though.
Answer: Yes you can. Just don't use a lot like you would in a charcole smoker.
Q:
Temperature control
Q:
Is a cover available for the Americana Smoker to help guard against the elements?
Answer: I do see a cover on Amazon made by Unicook. It’s a heavy duty waterproof cover that’s 30”diameter by 36” tall. You may want to measure across your smoker outside of the handles to make sure the 30” diameter cover will go over it
Answer: It’s sold separately. It’s not specific for this one but you could go to any place that sells smoker and get a cover. They are all about the same size. However this is electric. So I wouldn’t leave it outside as the connections for the plug will rust.
Answer: I would contact the manufacturer, they have numerous accessories available. An alternate source may be Amazon or any of the other online outlets for sellers of these covers.
Answer: I’m sure there is one out there. My smoker failed after two uses and before that it had a hard time getting to temp. The temp control is awful and pretty much worthless. It took twice as long as it should have to cook. I wouldn’t recommend this product.
Answer: yes, it popped up at bottom as an add on. it runs like $20
Q:
What kind wood chips does this use?
Answer: I have used The Weber brand hickory, pecan and mesquite wood chips. I have also used the store brands wood chips. There are many sellers who sell variety packs so that you can try different flavors to see which one you like best.
Answer: Well its an electric heat element. So when smoking you can use any type of wood chips you want. I have used hickory and apple wood chips. it's nice though because you don't have to worry About propane or coals.
Answer: You use a small amount of chips - I think ours were apple - bought in the bbq section at the grocery store. It's primarily electric.
Answer: I use mesquite, apple or cherry wood chips.
Answer: Any kind i just used lunp charcoal mixed with flavored chips
Answer: Any kind i just used lunp charcoal mixed with flavored chips
Answer: I use the applewood but I'm sure you can use whatever flavor you choose.
Answer: Any type.
Q:
How long does it typically take to heat??
Answer: never worked correctly....smoker did not seal properly..unable to reach proper heat....tried to talk with customer service got run around...threw it away...will never buy this brand again....
Answer: It doesn't heat very fast, we smoke our meat then remove it to finish in oven or crock pot. This smoker will dry your food out if you let it finish cooking.
Answer: This machine heats up quick I want to say the temp takes about half an hour depending on the temp out side like any other smoker when it is cold it is slower.
Answer: If you start out on high it heas up in about 15 minutes. Sometimes less depends on the weather and where you have it located
Answer: Fairly quick
Q:
Is this big enough for a rack of ribs or brisket?
Answer: Plenty of room! I use a rack for the ribs so that they stand up during the smoking process. Smoke them at 200 degrees or less. Great recipes on Google...
Answer: Whole brisket ? If it's from a large animal, probably not. The rack measurements give you the enswer. Baby back will be okay, but not spareribs. I have cut them in half before brining
Answer: Yes it is, I've done two racks of baby back ribs along with brisket at the same time. I stood the ribs up in a half circle in the top rack and the brisket in the bottom rack.
Answer: That would depend on the size of the ribs or the brisket. It is 16 inches inside diameter, so I've actually smoked a good size turkey, and lots of salmon and steel head. It does have two layers so you always cut the meat in half.
Answer: Yes, but. . .
Q:
Can you use wood chunks instead of the chips?
Answer: Yes and you should. If you are smoking a large item, such as a turkey, if you use chips they cook away much too soon to give a smoked flavor. I use chunks and by the time they are gone my meat is smoked sufficiently.
Answer: yes
Q:
Where can I get a Control probe for the smoker? The knob on mine came off.
Answer: check grill sections a home depot or lowes and get a better one
Q:
how hot can the top grill get. 300 400 F?
Answer: Haven’t checked but probably no more than 300
Answer: Not sure on temp. I have used the grill for steaks, burgers etc. Then used smoker for brisket, Turkey and I love it. Had one of these 20 years ago and wore it out ..lol. bought this one and use it weekly. Winter I put Turkey on remove next morning. Moist and DELICIOUS
Answer: The one I received didn't reach any temperature because it didn't work. Hour and a half putting together and it kept tripping the circuit breaker. Tried a different brand.
Answer: I tested mine and about 250 seems to be the temperature
Answer: I would estimate approximately 275F.
Answer: Only if you wrap it with something like a welders blanket and turn it to high
Q:
how do you grill on it?
Answer: I don't. I only use it as a smoker. if I did grill on it, I'd take the entire barrel off and place a grilling grate directly over the heating element.
Answer: The top part separates from the bottom. The bottom part is used to grill.
Answer: Just read and follow the instructions, they are very easy. Time is a big thing, as in not to over cook your product. Our salmon turned out to die for!
Answer: I TURNED IT INTO A FLOWER POT....NEVER WORKED...DOESN'T SEAL CORRECTLY..called customer service gave me the run around....JUNK RETURN IT IF NOT TO LATE...DO NOT BUY....
Product reviews of Americana 2 in 1 Electric Water Smoker that converts into a Lock 'N Go Grill
Justin B. : Not the best
I had a similar smoker that I used until I killed it. I purchased this one as a replacement because it was really similar to my previous one. This one however has a pretty janky temp control and the element seems to be slightly undersized. It takes a lot longer to get up to temp and struggled when there was a slight breeze even in the middle of summer. I used to be able to smoke shrimp and fish in 20-30 min on my old one, this one took closer to an hour. I’ve always used water in the pan to help keep things moist and regulate temp. I attempted to use without water to cook fish thinking that it wouldn’t matter because it was going to be such a short cook time, I wouldn’t suggest cooking without water in the pan. So in conclusion “not the best”
Karin Tande : Don’t buy this.
This is awful. It won’t go past warm. I’ve cranked it up to high for 2 hours now and still it’s only warm. Can’t smoke a thing in this smoker. I’m disappointed and sorry I bought it. Now I have to try and get my money back. Sad sad sad.
M.j. : Get what ya pay for
It doesn't get hot enough and it takes double the time to cook things all the way through. It's a poor design. But for the money it gets the job done
Roy Eberle, novice smoker : CAN'T GO WRONG
I noticed there were quite a few negative reviews. I can only speak for myself, I had no problems assembling the smoker, it took me all of 35 minutes. It is very easy to use, I use to have an Electric Brinkman Smoker and this unit out performed the Brinkman. I just finished smoking six Turkey legs. I did not have any problem getting smoke, I soaked (for one hour) in water, my large pieces of Apple wood (about the size of a tennis ball) and got smoke within five minutes. I set my heat at medium. The only thing I did was add a Dozyant temperature gauge. For what I paid, you get a great unit.
Kathy Hayes : Doesn't smoke that well
Kind of hard to figure out how to get a really good flavor out of the device.
Kevin K. : DON'T BUY! - Lasted 9 months: Already THROWN Away - Electrical Problems
I'm editing my review (thanks Amazon) less than a year later (about 9 months) to tell you I've already TRASHED this smoker. I have run into the same exact problem other have, namely the dreaded electic element/controller burnout. Don't believe me? Check out Amazon's own page on the replacement element (http://www.amazon.com/Meco-Replacement-Heating-Element-Grills/dp/B0000CGEQX/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1247782625&sr=1-1) which gets a two star review by the way. The reviews on the side of the main Meco 5030 page tell the story, as others mention the power problems.
I noticed that the smoker had been having temperature issues and ended up checking the electrode of the heating element. Sure enough, one had cracked completely where it joined the element, and melted (metal) itself so that it wasn't straight anymore. The electic controller had plastic burn marks at the hole and the conductors where burned as well. I even thought about shelling out the $50 bucks to replace these parts, but then noticed that people were having these issues over and over again, even with the replacments!
If you buy this smoker, you expose yourself to a systematic defect since there seem to be numerous instances of this. I can't believe this grill didn't last a year. On top of that, the wire grills are rusted out and have lost their coating and the thermostat is broken as well.
Planned Obsolescence? Perhaps, but they won't be getting any more of MY money. I'm buying a new smoker: the Old Smokey Electric. So long, Meco. There's a reason why the smoker gets lots of one and two star reviews.
DON'T BUY!
S. C. Smith : Wouldn't even heat over the lowest setting
I guess it is decently made for the money, but there are 3 settings: low, ideal and high. It wouldn't even heat to ideal in 12 hours set on high. I put lava rocks in the bottom as recommended and it took 12 hours to partially cook a 2.7 lb brisket and we had to finish it in the oven. Seems like it could be a good budget product, but not if it doesn't even heat to ideal when it is 65-70 degrees outside. I should have listened to the other bad reviews, but there were a lot of good ones. Didn't do it for us.
Joseph Egolf : Won't get up to temperature
I was really excited to use this. I can't get it over 200 degrees. Its been at least 3 hours and I haven't lifted the lid.
So I've been using this for the last 2 months. Basically if its not over 70 degrees outside it's very hard for me to get it over 200 degrees. The "thermometer" it comes with is basically just a hole filler. I use 2 of my own to test for accuracy. The only time it got above 250 is when my wood chips caught fire. With some nice weather and tinkering with a few things I have made some awesome jerky, ribs, and amazing roast beef. Over all I would recommend spending the money on a better quality smoker. If you do buy this one I recommend using a metal box for the wood chips, I got one on Amazon. The chips smoke well without catching fire and it's easier to clean up.
Terez Harris : Needs A better design
For a first time smoker I enjoyed using this grill I do have some complaints make the lid a little bigger so it covers the top and a better temperature gauge warm is not a temperature neither is ideal or hot I suggest if you purchase this grill get a wireless meat probe also
keith colbert : Worth every penny
I was very sceptical about it at first because I'm use to charchol smoker's but I must say I'm very impressed the electric water smoker. I've smoked ribs, pork shoulder, beef roast, and a whole chicken so far and they all came out great, my next thing will be a whole turkey for thanks giving. The only difference that I have noticed is that their is a lower sense of that smokey flavor, and the only complaint's that I have is that it was missing a few screws for a handle, and the thermostat never passes warm but it still gets the job done. Worth every penny
Viejo hombre : DO NOT BUY!!!!
Thermostat control is unpredictable. I have to use a welders blanket to get the temperature up. It will not get above 190 degrees on a 80 degree day, without the blanket.
Alan : Well built heavy duty!
We loved our 6 year old electric smoker but it finally gave up and we could not find another locally. After searching, we found this one and ordered. Easy assembly and it heavy. I like that we can convert it into a carry along grill for tailgating and use charcoal as well. I like the sliding door to control temp and the adjustable heat range. Our other one was just a plug in and smoke.. I think anyone would be happy with this Smoker-Grill combination. If you've never tried an electric smoker, they will surprize you on how fast and hot they get.
Terry Williams : The temperature gauge is wrong
We waited for a couple of hours and the temp gauge never moved, but we checked the temp with a meat thermometer and it was hot enough to cook. Other than that, the ribs were delicious! I'll use it again and again.
jo cool : 6 month disposable smoker.
I purchased this smoker May 11 2019. I have used it about 10 times. Now the element control and the electric element have failed. I also purchased the extended warranty but the process to get this item replaced - or just get the parts shipped to me for repair is an absolute joke! Terrible customer service.
d mo : Perfect smoker
#3, they last 5-7 years if you take care of them. If it quit tomorrow, I’d order another one just like it.
Rochelle : Electrical prong quit
I bought this smoker in April, 2019. Used maybe 8 times. Needed to smoke hams for Christmas and the electrical prong that's used for the power supply kept blowing a breaker. Thankfully, the adapter to my electric skillet fit and it worked out just fine. Apparently there's a short in the adapter. We were very pleased with it up to that point. I certainly think the power supply should have lasted longer. Not sure on the warranty, so I'll need to follow up with that.
Anna M. Bryant : Worst smoker I have ever used
Not sure if its a design flaw or manufacturer packed wrong element but my element didn't fit into adapter properly and the openings for the element prongs melted from improper fit. Thought it was a weird fluke and ordered a new adapter cord from manufacturer, same issue. Doesnt fit snug or maintain a connection to this element. Plastic also feels hot to touch which it should not and I can dete t a slight buzz or hum from it. Probably why the orginal one melted. So not only is it crap it is unsafe.
Amazon Customer : Perfect cook without the babysitting!
I bought this for my husband as a gift and we couldn’t be more happy! He loves to smoke, but doesn’t always like to have to tend to it constantly. We smoked 2 pork loins, wings and a roast...all to perfection and exactly how we wanted it.
There is more control and flexibility with this compared to our other smoker. We have yet to use the small grill it turns into, but looking forward to it for sure! I’m sure we won’t be disappointed!
Peter DeLuca : No seriously. Awful.
Never got to temperature. Even in their own promo videos, you can see that it doesn’t get up to temp. Read all the reviews and still bought it. Smh. You get what you pay for.
DLM : Don't rely on it
Bought this for parents because they wanted to smoke the turkey this year for our Thanksgiving get-together. Got it all set up, plugged in, and turned it up to high to get it going. 2 hours later, zero smoke and it's lukewarm and the thermostat is barely into the "warm" zone. I checked all the connections, reseated the element plug and 30 minutes later still nothing but warm. I just had to pull the bird and throw it in my Masterbilt smoker. Looks like we eat late today. Awesome...
Bonnnie : I love it. For me there is a bit of ...
this grill is one hot little mama, I love it. For me there is a bit of a learning curve, as I have never really had temperature control before. I will probably start at a high heat and sear the meat then turn it down to a medium to a medium high when using this as a grill, which is how I am using it mostly. I have cooked ribs and pork chops so far and I am loving it. I used another brand that has been discontinued for over 20 years and it was great. I was hesitant to buy this, but charcoal grilling to me on an almost daily basis is too time consuming. plus I seem to always be able to taste the lighter fluid no matter how long I let it burn. This has a clean taste and of coarse I used hickory chips so a little smokey too. The grill gets really hot on high, WOW, I love it. Thank God for this grill, I don't think I could stand another day w/o it.

TSurfer : Meco Water Smoker is fun!
I am a newbie to smoking meats, but the Meco Water Smoker makes it so easy! I actually checked each setting by placing a thermostat inside the grill. This make a big difference so you know what temperature you are cooking at. I have smoked a small hen, 12lb. turkey, ribs and a brisket. They were very easy and I get tons of compliments from family and friends. I am now getting requests to smoke meats for them (for a fee of course! :)) For the price, this is an excellent starter!
Ida : Do not but a Southern Country Smoker
Would give this smoker a "0" if I could. The element went out after 4 uses. After reading other reviews, it seems to happen to many customers.
Amazon Customer : Excellent
Love this product. People should try it. They will love it.
R. C. : Not a turkey smoker
It assembled easily with the furnished detailed instruction and its a very attractive grill. It took an excessive amount of time to cook a turkey so in retrospect, I should have selected the charcoal version of this grill. With the purchase of two additional parts, I can convert it to use with charcoal. Nice grill.
M.j. : Get what ya pay for
It doesn't get hot enough and it takes double the time to cook things all the way through. It's a poor design. But for the money it gets the job done
dianablot : Great flavor
I bought this smoker for my husband in August 2014. After receiving 2 dented smokers, and Amazon replacing them, we finally got one that was in perfect condition. It's now over a year later and we're still quite happy with the purchase. There is definitely a learning curve when it comes to timing the smoking of large cuts of meat, but we're getting better. And don't skimp on the wood chips! I do wish that it would heat to a higher temperature, because I don't believe that the thermostat on the side is accurate. But smoking isn't a fast way to cook, so I'm adjusting. We finally disposed of our old, rusting gas grill, and have been using the small electric base of the smoker for grilling - really love the flavor that the wood chip remnants lend to simple electric grilling.
James : Horrible buy
Wasnt impressed at all. Doesnt hold heat or smoke well, very cheap material, hard to control temperature, came with a cheap drip pan that looked like they got it out of a banquet pot pie box(literally the same thing) I sold it for 50 bucks to the next sucker
Sam : Great for the Money!
This is a great little smoker for the money. Setup is easy took me about an hour with a cordless drill/screw driver. I wouldn't attempt with a plain screw driver. Took us longer than normal to do the burn off the instructions recommend. They say 10-15 minutes. Took about an hour to get rid of the burned smell. Once that was done, we smoked our first ribs and pork butt on it. Works like a champ!
Ramster : electric smoking so easy no hassle
I have a similar smoker old but still works. I bought my brother this one and smoked tri tip and salmon on it and he loved it in fact were doing it again this weekend. Its an inexpensive but very capable smoker. You can buy a cover for another 20 bucks. I was a little disappointed the heat gauge didn't move .
Kindle Customer : Portable, easy.
We love this little guy. I bought it for my husband as a starting out smoker, and we are still learning how to use it. It was easy to put together and it's easy to use. I think that we have used it every night since we received it.
It doesn't leave a really heavy smoke flavor on anything it cooks like we have experience with wood charcoal grill, but everything has still been good. It's easy to keep it clean, and it doesn't take up too much space.
Amazon Customer : disaster
This was not a good buy. The drum does not fit well on the bottom portion so heat escapes. it takes longer to cook than the average smoker. You have to take the racks out to put water in when it evaporates.
4P519 : Minimal performance electric smoker. Not impressed
Pros: adjustable heating element thermostat, element heats to temp fast. Affordable. Converts to electric grill
Cons:
Thin metal, will not keep heat. Metal is flimsy had to beat out dents from shipping to get it to sit right. Has a double door firebox/lower grate inspection port. Looses heat from cooking area due to this design as you drop in chips for smoking. Cheap aluminum foil drip pan(cheap foil pan like frozen chicken pot pies come in). No lava rocks to distribute heat evenly. Cheap non accurate side mounted thermostat (warm/ideal/hot) No hardware to hang grill rack over heat element to convert to electric grill. Missing screws during assembly. Thin powder coated paint. Will flake off during first real smoke session. Leaks terribly-leaks equal heat loss and poor temp controls while smoking.
Cheap smoker no where near as good as the old Brinkman electric smoker. If this is your first smoker save a little more for a higher quality smoker. It will smoke but just need to tweak it to get it to do what you want. A smoker enclosure to hold in the heat is a must especially if it's below 70 degrees outside or wind is blowing. Great electric grill if you can make a rack hanger to hang over the element.
Viejo hombre : DO NOT BUY!!!!
Thermostat control is unpredictable. I have to use a welders blanket to get the temperature up. It will not get above 190 degrees on a 80 degree day, without the blanket.
kc : dosent sill update
have not used it yet cause missing parts im waiting on but I can tell its not what I need cause it allows smoke to get out in a lot of places cause nothing seals good update 3-1-2020 got great help on fixing my order from amazon an bbq company but used it for first time cooked a 3 pound pork loin would not get hot enough smoke an heat escaped from bad sealing had to wrap aluminum foil around the whole top an put charcoal around heating element an still took 6 hours UPDATE: 3-30-2020 as a retired bodyman I got a hammer an dolly an tapped the top of the smoker lip in just enough it sealed the top to the smoker will try it out tomorrow
Ferretocious : Works really well even in cold weather!! Instructions could have been better.
CONS:
- Some of the instructions were a bit vague. Like it gives you ZERO instruction on whether you should start out with the heat on high then lower? Or keep it at medium?
- I'm also not sure how effective the thermostat is as it stayed at the lowest temp yet I had FLAMES shooting off my wood chunks at one point!
- They also had a couple of parts that are only used for the charcoal model of the smoker so that was a bit confusing when I was done with setup and things were still left!
- If you're using wood chunks loose or in foil clean up is a bit of a hassle
- The "drip pan" they provide is just a flimsy aluminum pot pie sized pan that burned up and was useless after two hours of use.
PROS:
- my very first attempt at smoking - three cherry wood smoked chicken leg quarters and some potatoes - came out amazing!! The smoke flavour was obvious but not overpowering. Just YUM!
- looks great
- easy to move around
- easy to separate the top from bottom by just rotating the top section
- lots of room with the two racks
- worked well even though it was only about 38 degrees out!
I think it'll just take a bit of practice and research on the internet. I ended up ordering a metal box that the wood will go inside and ordered smaller wood pieces for smoking instead of the chunks. This will make it much less likely to burn the wood (and yes, I soaked the wood!) and also make cleanup a lot easier.
So all in all, I'm glad I finally have a smoker. This is a good "entry level" one just wish they gave more thorough instructions for complete novices like me! I can't wait to try smoking different types of vegetables, ribs, pork chops, brisket.
Devin E. : Great buy read more of my review to see what works best with this.
Works great, the first time I used it I didn’t get the results I wanted because it went through the wood chips very quickly about 30 mins or so. To fix this issue and to see if the chips are out. Check them though the bottom door and if all you see is ash than add more. You don’t get heat unless there’s smoke. Also buy a few bags of wood chunks as well as chips. The chunks last longer and work well in this smoker.
dianablot : Great flavor

Client d'Amazon : considere detween 1/2 hour to 1 hour to assemble
The good:
Regarding width of the trunc:good compromise between weight and expected durability.
Overall good manufacturing: hole are where they are supposed to be..
100% made in USA and even LOCALLY..... Because you are the one doing the job. There are plenty of part that could have been already assembled without changing the size of the package.
I smoked Salmon, Bass and trout, every thing was perfectly cooked and tasty.
The bad:
Assembly time that could be shorter.
Thermometer does not work. Did not get higher than the A of warm ( the scale is Warm-Ideal-Hot) but the fish was cooked anyway after 2.5 hours
missy2007 : No heat!
Sorry, had the same one for over 20 years and no problem. It finally bit the dust with not getting hot anymore. Purchased a new one. Used first on fish, no problem I guess cause it only needed 30 minutes. Second one was for a pork butt roast to make pulled pork. 7 hours in and the temp would not keep over 185 degrees. Had to finish in oven. Thank goodness Amazon has a great return policy. We were 2 days from return date. Funny story. 3 years ago I purchased a smoke guide for smoker. Had on old smoker for the first time and when smoker died, hubby forgot to remove before throwing old smoker away. Ok, got a new one for new smoker. When this one would not hold temp, hubby packed up to return. Yup, hubby left the brand new $7 smoker guide on this smoker and returned. Lol. Sad this one just did not work. On to the next. Not sure hubby gets new guide yet, that really ticked me off.
Elton Gay : Overall it’s a good unit
It wasn’t that easy to put together you had to guess at some of the connections. It wasn’t as heavy as I thought that it would be-good or bad to be determined. Overall I would say that it is serviceable and I would recommend it for someone wanting a smoker.
D. Ahrens : smoker for Thanksgiving
I received my smoker just in time to use for Thanksgiving dinner. We smoked the turkey #2 via directions of smoker after putting it together. We smoked the turkey 1/2 way through then finished off in another type cooker after 1st turkey was done. We knew we would not have time for the total smoking of the turkey, but wanted to test it out. It appeared to work well so far. The real test will be after trying other foods and complete the process. The smoker did not require much wood chunks to get the smokey flavor. I will try to update the review once we cook in it again. I think this will be easy and will probably get the job done as expected.

This will make it much less likely to burn the wood (and yes, I soaked the wood!) and also make cleanup a lot easier.
So all in all, I'm glad I finally have a smoker. This is a good "entry level" one just wish they gave more thorough instructions for complete novices like me! I can't wait to try smoking different types of vegetables, ribs, pork chops, brisket.
keith colbert : Worth every penny
I was very sceptical about it at first because I'm use to charchol smoker's but I must say I'm very impressed the electric water smoker. I've smoked ribs, pork shoulder, beef roast, and a whole chicken so far and they all came out great, my next thing will be a whole turkey for thanks giving. The only difference that I have noticed is that their is a lower sense of that smokey flavor, and the only complaint's that I have is that it was missing a few screws for a handle, and the thermostat never passes warm but it still gets the job done. Worth every penny
