Sorry to all the Ike fans in advance! If you have a look at the April 2008 Bassmaster magazine page 14 you will see what I mean. Why does a world class bass fisherman like Mike think he needs to take such photos? Who is he exactly trying to intimidate? Me, you or the fish he is throttling? I definitely respect his climb to the top but my 7 year old daughter has more intimidation factor. She is sugar and spice and everything nice. We are close in age but his maturity is on the level of a 3 grader. Whereas you might relate a KVD to a Tiger Woods you could compare Mike to a Terrel Owens or Ocho Cinco. Intimidating he is not - a poor sport he is. I would really like to take that fish and smack the s__t out of the 135 pound soaking wet punk . All the articles on the nice things he does or has done are a moot point when I look at him from a "passionate" bass anglers view! I have lost fish that cost me thousands of dollars but have never had the urge to headbutt my boat, scream like a girl or show any unsportsmanlike conduct. That's not passion it is a selling point that has backfired a time or two (didn't Ranger drop him or something?). Why do people think he is more passionate than the other ELITE members? Because thats what he says he is and would like people say! It is an excuse to try and cover his tail. I met him at a sportsmans show awhile ago and kinda liked him but he wasn't running around screaming he was more on sponsor please don't drop me mode. I would like for him to have an excuse like tourettes syndrome. He doesn't. I know I am new to the site and don't mean to ruffle to many feathers but I got the mag today saw the pic and was irked. I do plan on taking my fishing to the next level once my future is financially secure (soon I hope) but I guess I will never be as "passionate" as Ike.
He's still amazin.
Go meet him or have a conversation with him and your idea's on that will change.
Ike is, The Man! 8-)
it is good to have such a mature guy as yourslef judge the behavior of others, when ineed to check my slef I will be sure to PM You
you know who ike is, i know who ike is sponsors know who ike is... IKE WINS!
he is very soft spoken and mild mannered in person, so i'd say its part of the show for attention, and once again - IKE WINS!
Ike is the man.
The reason I like Ike is some of the stupid stuff he does. it tells me he's a normal guy that sometimes shows off or loses his temper. Who here can can say he has never behaved like Ike. I know I can't throw that stone! I also like Ike for the whole "where he came from and how hard he has had to work" thing. I like the other pros too but I have my favs and Ike is one of them.
Paul
Have met him and he reminded me of myself when I was 15. I am 33 now and have grown fishing and family matured me. Hopefully he grows up soon I would like to like him.
when ta put yourself out there on national t.v. and act like a fool you are a fool. Swindle is a very likeable goofball. KVD is a winner acts like a winner and doesn't need to be "passionate" I am not judging him on his accomplishments just on his actions. I am one goofy actin fool but I am not a public figure. Yet!
"Have met him and he reminded me of myself when I was 15. I am 33 now and have grown fishing and family matured me. Hopefully he grows up soon I would like to like him"
I'm 47 and if I could Break Dance on the front deck after catching a big bass I would. Sometime I do let out a loud YES.
Ike does a lot of work with youth in B.A.S.S. and I've personally met him and talked with him. You couldn't ask for a nicer guy! But, what impressed me the most, was watching him stick around at the end of a tournament until absolutely the last person that wanted one, was able to get his autograph. He was there long after the other anglers, and even most of the staff, were long gone.
Go Ike!!!
You can't polish a turd! If my sponsors told me to stay all week I would. Sponsors=Money
My old club problably thought the same of me when I was whoopin them and gloating! Even though I earned the nickname JVD because I took fishing seriously and won seriously. If my daughter wouldn't have become ill I would be on tour now. But it will just make us all stronger and give me more drive to strive for greatness. I will be there just had a setback
Did this guy do something to you, it seems like all Ike's selling points and all his characteristics trigger some hateful response in you. No offense, don't get me wrong we are all entitled to our opinions, but why don't you believe he is sincere and real when it comes to all he does for the sport?
Have you read his book? Take a look at the life the guy has gone through to get where he is. It's an amazing story. And you know what, if I worked that hard all my life to do something that I dreamed of as a kid... your dam right I'd be getting excited. I love what I'm doing just like Ike loves what he's doing. He is the best angler out there as far as showing enthusiasm and bringing bass fishing to youth.
His statements about never giving up and his fun style on the boat bring something to bass fishing that it has been lacking, the curve ball, the quirk that seems to drive a lot of other anglers nuts... to me if you have problems or questions about Ike... your letting him get to you in a way that pushes your buttons... that my friend is indeed the meaning of intimidation. To say your not intimidated after the first thread you wrote on here is definately hypocritical.
I'm not trying to start a pit fit either. But I just think that someone who has done as much as this guy is entitled to act the way he does on the boat. He loves the sport more than most and would do anything to help contribute. He writes some great articles in Bassin'magazine, he demonstrates and is not afraid to show you the insides and outs of all different kind of lures and he is indeed very well spoken.
Also have you had kids? When Ike did, it allowed him to allow his inner child to still have a place in his life. His kids brought about the fun in the sport again (for him). His stories of taking the girls out with their fishing gear and allowing them to enjoy fishing the way he did as a kid says a lot for a guy who is so busy being on the water all year. I hope both his girls end up on the Woman Bass Tour later on in life. Mke is a great guy and I only hope someday I can contribute in some kind of way like he has.
Go Ike!
Ps - Successful athletes and sports figures gain intimidation factors by what they accomplish. You are very correct that KVD is intimaidating, but it is a different kind. No one would want to go up head to head against that guy with his track record. But Ike is building one of his own. Angler of the year, classic winner, climbed the ranks to get where he is at. He's made a name for himself. If you ask me any angler on the pro tour would be intimidating. You have to do a lot of work to get to that point. And to catch fish that consistently says a lot about your game.

Hey Bigmouth, since I am another East Coat Italian you wanna meet some where and fish, Let's see what you have, Ike doesn't need defending by anyone here and he certainly should have to be bashed by the likes of you I ain't no pro but i would bet you a couple of bucks you aint no KVD either, :
i am truly sorry your daughter is sick, but my friend...
QuoteI would be on tour now.
you will when the spelling bee when they ask you to spell "sour grapes"

WOW!!!
No he has not done anything to me personally. Ever. He has never stirred me in anyway. Until today. Something just got in my head. Hey maybe I just have cabin fever or something. I have never wanted to read anything Mike has written. I did listen to him at a seminar intently (04' I think) and took mental notes. I don't hate HIM,just the antics. I called my brother in law who is just as goofy as me, and he thought like me. The photo is hilarious (i.e. a joke). He moved me because I know and you know he has a classic title an AOG title and little respect from his peers. So it seems. I do have a daughter 7 she fishes with me whenever I am not in tourneys or practicing intently for a tourney. she has caught a 4 pound 3 ounce smallie and a 3 pound 7ounce largemouth pb. How bout that! I would not leave her to watch Ike in a fit. Just not an adult way to express yourself (sorry!) I also came from a neighborhood you would not walk through and have worked very hard to put myself into position to retire by 40. Hopefully. I don't believe in intimidation in fishing. I fish against fish and never have I worried about my area lake masters I can win anywhere against anybody! . I just put on my Ipod and fish. Losing myself in a zone. But for some reason there is always this thing called a smile on my face. Maybe it's because I am fishing and enjoying myself. That didn't sound right did it? What a firestorm. It's o.k. though I expected to catch it I guess. Maybe I was harsh a bit but I stand firm on the antics issues. It's a respect thing that's all. I don't really hero worship so I doubt I will change this view. He made his destiny I am making mine. We are kinda mirror images but in a GOOD/BAD way!
Sure muddy I have no prob with that. Can you do Ohio? or You want more of a in between I can only make it a day long trip! I love a challenge! Sound fun really!
I live in Eastern PA I finish School In mid June, we can be on after that 1/2 way between us.
How about mosqito or the big lake?
Allegheny river?
We have time to work it out i would prefer a lake but a river will do.
Somewhere niether of us has fished. 4hours best fish wins
lol.. sounds like someone needs attention
O.k. but how do you know where I have fished and I don't know where you have fished. I hope you all understand my fit is more about a public figure acting poorly and mean no malice to anybody in here. I would have said the same of any elite angler that acts this way. That wasn't an Italian attack in any way. Lets do it 6 hours 3 fish minimum
Don't need the attention, just a challenge! and to get out of the house still iced up here!
Ask any of the fellas here i keep my word and I tell the truth, so I fish the Eastern Part of the State,NY and NJ I will be going west, My Challange my rules 4 hours best fish
I met IKE before at the Classic in 2006. Seemed like a nice guy, was signing for the kids and gave his fans time. Although, I think it would be incorrect to use that one moment in time to judge his character. Like anyone else in life, famous or not, he is going to have people who like him and haters.
Other than that who am I to judge him or anyone else?
Whatever floats your boat, if you like the guy then so be it, if not then who cares. Lastly, I don't think Ike gives a darn about an individual's opinion unless that said person is writing a check in his name or someone he cares about.
O.K. I am honest as well. I just would like to make it a worthwhile trip for both of us! Or all of us we will have galleries now after all this!
QuoteWe are kinda mirror images but in a GOOD/BAD way!
somebody start a poll... which is which on the good/bad scale?
PM sent, this should make it worth while for the winner
WINNER TAKES IT ALL 8-)

Muddy
This should be good!!! If you need a observer let me know I will fly out from Colorado to watch this one. Mosqito Lake is in Cortland OH Just outside of the Warren and Youngstown area. I'm grew up there and a big bass will be the size of a average smallmouth on the big lake.
I've never been a fan of Ike. I admit he's a monumentally talented fisherman, he's also an obnoxious clown.
Falcon
This could get interesting. If you guys are really going to go through with this challenge let us know when and where ? I would definately drive over to where your fightin errr I mean fishing and give you all some support.
By the way "I LIKE IKE"

I don't have time to read all the replies to this thread, but I hope everyone has a similar opinion as me. Who in the world are you to judge what is "mature" and what is not?
Are you saying you never get pumped when you catch a good fish?
Do you never scream and get angry when you lose a good fish?
I autographed my friends forehead right after I caught my 14lber, and then 2 months later, snapped a rod over my knee when I lost a 5lber in the tournament. Am I mature? Am I to passionate? I would love to hear your opinion?
Grow up.
I admire what Ike has accomplished through bass fishing, his work with youth, and his willingness to share his knowledge. He is one smart businessman and an interesting celebrity. And I think he has done more to bring youth into the sport of fishing than any other professional angler on the circuit.
I also don't relish some of his on-camera antics, but I always thought it was a generation gap sort of thing. Awhile ago I started to wonder why I never gave much thought to similar antics by other athletes, only when it applies to pro bass fisherman. Right or wrong, I've come to realize what really bothers me about some of his (and others) public over-the-top conduct. Here is it: I've had problems while fishing, with some dock and property owners on public waters. Some feel they own the public lake. I've always found that acting humble and courteous usually will stem their anger. Somehow I look at Ike's type of antics as what these property owners need to sway public opinion to their cause, and to put more restrictions on bass fishermen angling in public waters. Now if my thought process is wrong (and it probably is), then I say go Ike... Be yourself!
No matter what, he does do a lot of good for the sport! And you can't deny that he's one heck of an angler.
Who has a video camera to head up and cover this magnificient sporting event? That would be a sweet little promotion for bassresource! Haha. Wish I could be there. Sounds like fun guys.
In response to the last reply on this thread. Mike has made himself almost a celebrity and definately represents a group of up and coming anglers. A lot of young guys that fish, myself included are starting to get fired up about the sport because of the intensity Mike brings. Watching him on camera gets me in the mood to get out there and whack em'. He gives me hope, ambition, and drive that I may not have as much of if I hadn't seen or heard of him. Maybe the generation gap is a little different and Mike just tailors himself to a younger audience. No problem with that.
Are all you sentimental, quiet, reserved type fishermen gonna get mad when you see young guys like us on tour getting pumped when we land that monster at last minute before weigh in? I may never be doing that but I'm sure there will be anglers like Mike to follow. Maybe not in the near future. But it's coming. The sport is definately changing guys. But I don't think it's a bad thing at all. Every sport has their characters. Mike makes the sport interesting. Everyone has to agree with that.
if you manage yourself, everything will be fine. some athletes love to showboat--it happens in all sports. when i played football my coach always said "when you get into the end zone, act like you have been there before". i think ike is great for bass fishing and he contributes a lot to the sport and his community. i personally love his antics--i get fired up as well when i catch a good fish in a tourny. i am not going to tell you to grow up, because it is not my place. if you don't like ike, that is your opinion. i like the guy--that cat can flat out fish.
Bottom line is....you like him or you don't! Best thing to do.....keep it to yourself.
Bass fishing is a growing sport. It doesn't need critizism from it's own!
I'm like Senko77. I didn't read all of this but when I glanced at a couple post a Brad Pasley song came to mind.
This is definately a SOUR APPLE thread and should not have been started!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
