Congrats to Alabama anger Randy Howell on winning the Classic this year. Won it by 1 pound exactly with 67-8. Came from 11th to 1st on day 3. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.
His heart was pumping. Knees a shakin... was rooting for him Toward the end. Glad he won.
Really happy about this..Thats a real good guy. Great day for Bass fishing...
I'm so happy for him. He seems like a great guy.
no one deserves this more than Mr. Howell! Always gives thanks to the man upstairs and I really respect that!
He just won the bassmasters and was very humble and gracious thanking God and his family. He even said he doesn't win many Tournements! He said he was going work his but off for the sport of bass fishing this year. A very genuine guy that will be a great ambassador for bass fishing. Congratulations to Randy Howell a real class act.
Would be hard to find a better more deserving champion.
Does anyone know the predominent pattern he used to win?
From what I was sent and read, he mainly used a prototype Livingston Lure, crankbait, crawfish color. Also, I read he used a Rapala DT 6 in practice, but I know he said he used the DT6 today as well.
The livingston crank prototype was handed to him on media day and he only had the one in the boat that caught him all the winning fish.
Good story for Mr. Howell, seemed to be a real humble guy. Great to see if public figures these days.
Yep red crankbait it was. Seemed to be one that would dive about 10 feet. Was cranking a long a bank that looked like it had some rocks on it.
Based on the cruddy feed on the live take out footage, he said he used the DT6 in the red crawfish. He even mentioned he wasn't sponsored by them and he caught most of his fish off of it.
This is what I heard as well, it definitely seemed that he used the DT6 for the vast majority of his bites.

I may be mistaken but I think he said he caught a 6 lber on the Livingston. But yes he caught several on the Rapala and the rest on the Livingston both in red/orange craw color
yea, he caught early on the DT6.........but switch to the Livingston later when they moved off some and went to culling.
the 6# off the dock was caught on a chatterbait.
Well that was a surprise, sounds like he deserved it. Last I checked in was earlier in the afternoon. Congrats!

It doesn't matter to me. It was an awesome comeback. What a day for him. How many of us have a spectacular day on the water and wished it was in a tournament? He had the best fishing day of his life and it happened to be on championship Sunday at the Classic!!!! I'm getting goosebumps typing this! LOL
Randy caught most of his fish on the riprap in Spring Creek. When we were there for the BassResource Roadtrip in 2012, we fished spring creek with limited success, maybe three fish, but we NEVER fished the riprap and the bridge pilings that day! Doh!
Later in the week ChrisatTech and I were going under the bridge at saulty creek (way north) and my Humminbird 1198 LIT UP with fish. We stopped and and caught a few, only because we didn't want to move in on another boat that had the "garden spot". We watched them pull in around two dozen bass in about a half hour!
Now I was on to a pattern! When the dam was pulling water it creates current and the bass stacked up at the bridges! Using that pattern I caught several the next day at another bridge (I forget the name of the creek, it is the first creek northwest of the dam). It was there we broke several crankbaits trying to sidearm cast under the low bridge! Easily our best day of the Guntersville Roadtrip!
Bridges have always been a hot spot at Guntersville. Bass and Crappie
Sometimes the good guys win!
After his first initial weigh-in to put him in the hot seat and all he said, I was a fan. I was rooting for him from that point on. He's got a new fan in me.
He's a fine example for the youth, better than they'll find in other sports! Congrats to a classy winner
he seems like a great guy! Glad to see he won. 1 pound ahead to win jezzz! the suspense...........
He fished the rip rap heading into spring creek on the final day to come from behind at the bridge. He said on saturday night he caught them there and his SI showed him just BALLS of bass stacked up on the rap.
I think this went very much like I predicted, the rain/mud sent the females back out deep, they just happened to be coming back when he got there.
They raffle his boat off, you can buy a ticket and it all goes to his charity. His boat is now worth a whole lot more. That was a great classic, I followed all day all three days. Would be awesome to win it, have enough money to put it away. What are the chances the classic winners boat was up for charity raffle?

Here was my best producer from that week!

Is that green back considered gizzard shad?
Bassmasters website posted a GoPro video with clips from Randy's Day 3. Randy really interacted with the crowd and just had a good time with it all. I love to see stuff like that and I bet all the spectators standing on the bridge had a great time. I'm glad Randy won. He seems like a great guy and I'm sure that truly was a moment that was beyond a dream come true.
Here is a link to that Go Pro video

Like so many of us, I watched this entire event unfold on line. The past few season's I've been vocal here regarding my disappointment surrounding the poor live coverage of this event. Well, after this weekend, I'm singing a totally different tune.
As an angler and overall BASS fishing fan, I can not remember any event that I enjoyed more than this years Classic.
Always been a Fan of Randy Howell and to watch him come out of now where on the last day was fantastic.
How can you not like this guy ?
Really looking forward to televised version of this event and will be very excited to heard Randy's account of the events of the entire tournament and last day; after he's had time to relax and think about it for a while.
BASS really needed an event like this and a Classy Champion like Randy Howell.
Well Done.

Congrats to Randy Howell for the win. He had an amazing and impressive last day to squeak out the win. That last day we tore them up !! I was equally if not more so impressed by Paul Mueller, falling a pound shy of the win.... A northern amateur angler who had never fished there before came out of 43rd place on day one to miss winning the classic by one pound. He didn't even get a limit on the first day. He only had 3 fish. To do what he did and set a 5 bass bassmaster classic record limit of 32 lbs 3 oz was incredibly impressive.
Does anyone know his rod/reel combo and the line he used? I haven't been able to find that. I am curious about the speed of the reel he used.
Thanks,
Wdy

he spoke about it last night in his press conference...... 7 foot and 7'2foot tatula rods.... might have been tatula reels as well (cant remember the reel) they were however 6.3:1 ratios.
best I can recall..... the dt6 was thrown on a 7foot Med light 12# line (cant rememebr brand, check his sponsors)..... and the livingston 8-10foot runner was thrown on a 7'2 medhvy. cant remember line for this combo
the chatterbait was also on a 7'2 rod cant remmeber but it might have been MH too, I THINK it was 16-17# line.
look on bassmaster.com and see if they have his press conference still up.

I also watched the whole event, the coverage was fantastic, I feel for Tharp and Evers, but yesterday was Randy Howell's day. It was a true display of not overthinking the situation, he just went with his gut, or as he said the little voice that told him to fish the bridge. Its a God thing congratulations Mr. Howell...

I feel for Mueller..... if he cathces 4 fish instead of 3 the first day he wins.
hats off to Howell for sure.

Obviously I was rooting for home team with Paul. But glad none the less that one of the genuine guys won.
Paul Mueller is a member of this forum boys. Signed up November of last year. Send him a PM and congratulate him. Randy Howell is a class act and will be an absolute gentleman and use this win to benefit the entire sport. This classic was a win win in my book.
I do like Randy. He seems like a pretty genuine guy and I know he's heavily involved in charity work. I think he'll do some great things with the exposure.
Was pretty exciting to watch. Crazy to see the crowed though. Guess it didn't hurt the fishing all that much.
He got cheated out of $200,000 as the Morons at B.A.S.S dropped the 1st place prize down to $300,000.

Nice write up here by Mrs. Robin Howell.

Great read indeed!
Ole Db had a great quote, as well..... something we all need to hear time to time.

Yep. As I recall it was about a half dozen or so, I can't remember exactly how many. I've never had so much fun busting fishing tackle in my life. What a blast!
