I cant be the only one that thinks Ike is too much sometimes. Meet the guy before and he is very nice. Just have always felt this guy saw an opportunity to be a star by fist pumping and yelling. Its paid off big time.
Just always been told to be quite while fishing and this guy goes nuts. Maybe its just me. Either way the guy can flat out fish.
sometimes i think hes a little to much, but then again ive never fished for $500,000. I do miss the break dancin though. Id like to see him and skeet have a dance off for a bonus $10,000. I think ike could take him.
I think Ike is very entertaining. He is definatly not your typical bass angler. But he knows how to fish and loves fishing and I think that is why he gets so excited.
No. Not over the top.
Not over the top, just trying to change the stereotype of bass fishing. No longer slow paced and a Hick type sport.
I think he's a monumentally talented fisherman, however, when he starts all the screaming, he's quite obnoxious.
Falcon
I think it is amazing. I think it is absolutely awesome how psyched he gets when he boats a fish. You can feel the passion he has for the sport. I personally love it...
Let's see.... Barking at fish? Spitting? (Watch the final - Have to see it to understand) Drove/Stabbed his pliers into the deck of his boat. He has problems.....
, he should scream louder, if any of you dudes got yelled in face by him. I'm sure you would have a different point of view. YEAH!! WOOOOO!!!!!
yea I was gettin a little worried at his pretty calm demeanor in the classic up untill he yanked those two hawgs at the end, it bet those last two bass were scarred for life ...I think that kind of excitment great tho. BTW how does Ike get into many pro level tournaments??? One minute hes in the top ten of a Stren Series in NY, half an hour later hes yanking hawgs in an Elite in Alabama, and on his way to lunch in between he qualifies for the FLW tour event in PA. I swear theres two or three of him
QuoteLet's see.... Barking at fish? Spitting? (Watch the final - Have to see it to understand) Drove/Stabbed his pliers into the deck of his boat. He has problems.....
I did watch the final. He got river water in his mouth... could get sick from the bacteria I would spit it out too.
Over the top, no. If it were me fishing in that big of a tournament, I would be screaming just as loud and be as excited as he is. So what if he isn't the stereotypical fishermen.

Right... whatever...
Now justify/explain the pliers into the deck....
Quote, he should scream louder, if any of you dudes got yelled in face by him. I'm sure you would have a different point of view. YEAH!! WOOOOO!!!!!
LOL, there would definitely be a different point of view going on.
He would probably be looking up at me through a couple feet of lake water....

Someones either been drinking the Kool Aide or the river water. He's a great angler, no doubt, but the spitting was just WAY over the top.
No. Not at all. Let me put it to you this way: I was fishing in a BFL as a coangler, had missed a couple fish throughout the day. The family and kids were coming to watch weigh in, I was staring a donut. Then, wham, I land a 12 incher! (1.5 bls) I screamed and wooted like I was out of my mind. d**n near broke my boater's hand as I slapped a high five. I was PUMPED! and we are not even talking about Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars on the line...
In fact, I go crazy when I hook a big one on my local pond when no one is even looking, and I bet Ike does the same. It is just how you are wired... Some people just get really amped up and are not low key.... ;D ;D I relate to Ike's emotions, and because of it, he is my Favorite angler.
he is a very talented fisherman. i have no issues with him getting excited on his own boat catching fish. even when he went on a tirade and kicked the american flag off his boat. i didnt get mad at that. i am sure most were like that was disrespectful. the issue was he wasnt thinking and acted purely on emotion. to see that many folks not understand this and making such a big comotion about it along with media over hype is sad. imo...he is a true american angler. if you dont like him, dont watch him

He is the OPPOSITE of the TRUE AMERICAN PROFESSIONAL angler.
I do understand him. Having worked with troubled kids.. I understand very well.
Everyone is emotional to some degree. Skeet, KVD, CLUNN...all of them are emotional. Some choose to contain it, to a point, and some dont.
IKE's emotions show elements of violence. Demonstrations of domination over a smaller object/fish. Violent outbursts followed by him breaking equipment. Displays stabbing motions, barking, taunting.... I could go on but you all have seen it.
I don't he is over the top. It brings something new to the sport. Some of you older people might not like it, but I do. So what if the guy gets really excited and pumped when catching a bass. I would be that crazy too if 500,000 dollars was on the line and the fact you have to impress your sponsors in order to keep them. I rather watch Mike yell "Never give up" twenty times when catching a kicker, rather than some pro with no personality at all. It reminds me of the movie Happy Gilmore. Happy was a outrageous pro with some crazy ways. At first everybody was hating on him, but eventually people realized it was good TV, so the promoters liked him since he brought more viewers. 8-)
this was the first time i had watch the classic i thought Ike was on drugs
"Demonstrations of domination over a smaller object/fish"

WOW. take it easy there pavlov. you mean to tell me you wouldn't get chapped if your livewell broke and you were in contention of a professional tourny? you wouldn't be chapped if you lost a big fish in the BASSMASTER CLASSIC? some guys show their emotions differently. just because you work with troubled kids doesn't make you a psychologist. i have had many kids come through my classroom with those same emotions you described who turned out just fine.
QuoteNot over the top, just trying to change the stereotype of bass fishing. No longer slow paced and a Hick type sport.
Yeah, yelling, screaming, and making yourself hard to ignore is definitely a step above being a hick. : Not that I have any trouble with Ike the way he is, but I tend to prefer a quieter, respectful demeanor. However, one can show respect and get excited at the same time. He is what he is. Some people like it and some people don't but none of us can read his mind and know his intent, good or bad.
I do not think that he is "over the top" I do think that he is great for the sport and that at least some of his antics have some element of theatrics.
Was there this much talk on this site last year about the guy that did NOT win??
QuoteI do not think that he is "over the top" I do think that he is great for the sport and that at least some of his antics have some element of theatrics. Was there this much talk on this site last year about the guy that did NOT win??
People are really talking about steroids and everything that is wrong in baseball and some are leaving the sport as fans. Just because people are talking about him, doesn't necessarily make it a good thing.
I won't try to analyze him but IMHO he's fun to watch.
QuoteJust have always felt this guy saw an opportunity to be a star by fist pumping and yelling. Its paid off big time.
How do you say the above and the below in the same post?
QuoteEither way the guy can flat out fish.
He's a star BECAUSE he is a great angler (AOY and Classic winner), the fist pumping has nothing to do with that.
If he was a mediocre pro, he'd be a nobody.
He is definitely a super high energy guy with some impulse control issues, but I just love how he still has the fire for the sport. I believe his enthusiasm for bass fishing is why he is one of the top guys out there.
IKE is a PRO - nobody can argue with that. But along with being a Professional, should come some responsibilities for behavior that we would want our children or grandchildren to exhibit. If my kids behaved the way Ike does at times, they'd be sitting out the event in the Truck. (probably beating out the windows if they were IKE ;D )
Yes.
I don't think he is over the top. I think it is funny and I like the emotion shown.
I do think that he brings lots of personality and talent to the tournoments. Every angler has different ways and personality, some quiet, some not so quiet. I personally like the way he "celebrates" landing his big fish.
I have seen local guys scream like him before landing the fish, only to lose it right at the boat, or guys loosing the big one and having a fit about it afterwards. Imagine doing all this for a living, could you not show emotion?
The way I see it is like a running back in football going all the way and having an end zone dance, some guys dance and some don't. Him sticking his pliers on the boat is like any golf player trowing the clubs, I am not saying I would do it, but I understand frustration.

He is a grown man, he can do whatever he wants! If you guys don't see that, thats sad. For his age being able to tell like that is great,
GO MIKE!
Ike is not over the top. He used to be worse I think, he's calmed down a tad.

I kinda get what you are saying but not really a fair analogy, IMO. The troubles you speak of in baseball are of people trying to gain an unfair advantage by using performance enhancing substances (cheating) and then lying about it. Ike yells and screams and does other unorthodox things that some folks may find offensive, heck he may even have Demonstrations of domination over a smaller object/fish, but cheating and then lying about it (baseball guys) I don't think so.
To some people he is a villain and to others hero. Just what every successful sport needs.

I understand what you say, however, if I wanted to shield my kids from any and all acts of unprofessionalism I would have to live in Siberia somewhere. you just need to watch the news and see how bad some professionals behave. I just hope my kids have enough commun sence to not do some of that stuff.
I don't think screaming and puting your pliers thru your boat is the worse we have seen. My 13 year old and I were laughing when Mike was on the boat floor screaming like crazy.
If I was bringing in his checks I would be that happy too. Anybody here that wouldn't scream for $100,000 is a liar.
I think his outbursts/persona are at least 50% an act. I have seen him land fish and be very calm then glance over at the camera, and as if he just remembered it was there, begin to muster screams and fist pumps. I think he is a flamboyant character but I think the reputation that the media has given him as a young, crazed, emotional fisherman who brings "extremeness" to the sport has made him construct a character that he fulfills.
QuoteIf I was bringing in his checks I would be that happy too. Anybody here that wouldn't scream for $100,000 is a liar.
Agreed. Thank you. ;D ;D
I'm wondering what would be the majority of responses be if the first post was from a Moderator saying Ike was a member of this forum.
i can see both sides sometimes he is over the top but i can see the fact that i get really worked up when a bass breaks the pound mark but maybe that's just us :-?

Please read all of my posts before you assume I'm taking a side here. I don't have a dog in this hunt. I'm just saying that the argument of everyone talking about Ike's actions being good for the sport isn't necessarily so. If he offends 25 percent of the people and they are talking about it maybe it's not such a good thing for the sport. Maybe, maybe not.
I think it shows his true passion as an angler, plus he is a really nice guy. I think I would be a little annoyed by it if he were stuck up and a jerk, but he's not.

Exactly! The football endzone celebration is a PERFECT anaology. I love the endzone celebrations...the wackier the better. My dad hates them. Just depends on how you are wired.

OK Dr.Phil, now that you brought this into the picture, let's see i have spent my career working a a Job Corps Center, currently Supervisor of Residential Living, I would say I work with " troubled kids"
Ike:
1. is not a kid
2. He is very excitable, and shows NO SIGNS of INHERENT VIOLENCE
he does show the passion and vigor of an Italian American guy from New Jersey. I am an Italian American guy from Brooklyn, so maybe I can feel him a little bit better than you do. We were taught to show our emotions growing up. Better to show them than turning them inwards and then going postal
Throwing pliers is a long way away from hurting animals and the other classic signs of aggression
also why would you dismiss Robbie's comments like that. Bad foot to start off around here. :-?
oh and by the way WHAT PLACE DID YOU COME IN AT THE CLASSIC :
Everyone needs to chill. I'm not bashing mike as a fisherman. I read his book, I enjoy watching him fish. I dont enjoy watching him act like an *** He is a great fisherman. That wasn't the question
The question was is he over the top... My answer was YES. I also think he has some issues.
Thats all.
He gives 'over the top' a bad name.
His act is growing quite lame.

I am not getting into a ticking match on the internet about credentials. You are a counsler, a Dr. Phil Jr., big deal....
Later.... this Ike love fest is too much.
He can read too! How do you get counselor from Residential Living Supervisor. I supervise dorms that house 600 students, and their staff.
You posted your credentials and theories first, I challenged them, why no back up to your statements?
Wow what a start, he's gonna do great around here. a pleasure I am sure. :
Waaay over the top.
I think he's a tool and wouldn't let him on my boat no matter how good of a fisherman he is. Besides, the first time he screamed and hollered over a 1-pounder I'd kick him overboard!
Showing some emotion is one thing. Yelling and sceaming and breaking stuff is childish.
If you want the sport to start having a "WWE feel" to it...then Ike's your man. :
Plus he's really rough on the fish he catches, bouncin' em off the deck of the boat, holding them horizontally by the jaw w/o supporting the belly, etc. I can only watch a "professional" do that so much. A little respect for the resource that makes him rich would be nice to see.

As for the second highlight, THIS IS A FORUM. People disagree, live with it.
Personal remarks/attacks abound in your post. I'm sure Ike is cool enough to take some heat, you don't need to defend him. Afterall, he's "not a kid". :
Well, I'm sure everyone participating in this thread would like
"the last word", but you're just going to have to go with what
you already posted.
