Hellgrammite imitating baits? 2024

fishing user avatarwvwask reply :

I have a bait called a helgy or something Im going to try...

But has anyone else found any good artificial hellgrammite baits??

I'd like to find some soft plastic one, and I think I have seen a hard one from rebel once upon a time...

I just imagine they would be great for fishing the rivers here in Canada for smallies... we used to fish the live ones growing up in West Virginia and they were great... bass love... er uh... hate them... haha.

Thanks!

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

Case plastics has one at www.madtoms.com

fishing user avatarrdneckhntr reply :

I have some soft plastic helgramites...Some older guy was fishing the river behind my house and was nice enough to give me a couple.  They really do catch some big smallies...  I have no clue where to get anymore though.

fishing user avatarCrankin Fun Times reply :

I have the rebel hardbait model of the hellgramite, but unfortuanitly I havent even had a chance to throw it yet, so I can't give any feedback, I will say this though it has absolutely NO WEIGHT to it, which i consider to be a major downside!

fishing user avatarflyhatch reply :

i 2nd the case plastics helgies

the look great

i used a little drop shot rig to fish them in the river

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

Lunker City makes "Hellgies" too.  They look a little different from the Case version and I use them on a split shot rig for finesse applications around sand shorelines and the shallow "moss" in clear water lakes.  I like the looks of those Case baits too.  Never heard of Case before, thanks for throwing that out.  I'm going to check out the rest of their stuff.

fishing user avatarjomatty reply :

i used to fish helgramites for smallies as a kid and they were the number one bait at some places.  havent fished them in a long time and there arent that many available, although i dont know why.  anyways let us know how those case baits work out for you.  all in all ive been impressed with the things ive tried from case.

Creme Lures makes some nice small critter imitations, including Helgramites.  Look here.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

yeah, Case makes some good stuff, I especially like their soft jerkbaits and the jack's worms. The madtoms are supposed to be smallie killers too.

fishing user avatarhoudini reply :

I just tried some Case plastics to include the hellgramites. I used some 'sliders' and crawled them along the bottom as well as unweighted and with split shot.

The good news is the smallies ate 'em up! Good stuff and highly recommended.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

try the sinkin' salty shad. they are the only bait i've been using this summer.

Al's Gold Fish makes a "helgie" spoon.

Berkley makes a Gulp hellgrammite which probably didn't exist back in 2007 when this thread was started.

fishing user avatarWI_Angler1989 reply :

Since this thread is making a return.....River Rock has a helgramite as well. Never used it personally, but it looks pretty awesome especially since I found some in my home river last season.

If that's the one by sluggo it's great I use it like a jerk bait on a jig head or tx rig . Black and olive is a good color .

fishing user avatarwisconsin heat reply :

Never used these myself so I cant speak o their effectiveness, but they look good.

That looks more like a stonefly nymph than a mayfly nymph, from what I can see.  It also semi-resembles a helgramite.  The only issue I have with most helgramite imitations (and I've looked d**n hard), is that none of them adequately mimic the way a helgramite tends to ball up when dislodged into current

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

That Savage Gear Mayfly is one bad looking dude! Can't wait to give it a try. I've had a great deal of success with the Mister Twister Helgy. Especially on the drop shot and on a jig head.

fishing user avatarsmr913 reply :

Trout Magnet makes some. They have two sizes a 2.75" and a 1.25" (I think that is correct). They are meant to be fished on Ultralight tackle.

fishing user avatarTheRodFather reply :

I absolutely destroyed the smallmouth in the small-ish river that I wade in for a quick fix, with the Gulp 3in Hellgies. So much so that I bought out all the local tackle places.  Once I was running low on Gulps, I ordered a few packs of the Case Hellgies, and while they looked 10 times more realistic than the Berkleys, they didn't produce near as much all things being equal.

I experimented with scent a little during the end of the fall, so I am interested to try the Case Hellgies again this season with some scent.  The Case plastic is certainly a more durable bait.

I had the most action rigging them on a Trout magnet jighead 1/64oz, and just casting up, or to the side and letting it drift with the current.

fishing user avatarSpankey reply :

I've only fished the Case over the years rigged similar to the Trout Magnet version you fish. Sometimes on a real slow day I break out some UL/L stuff and it saves the day. I don't ever recall catching a respectable bass on them, mostly dinks and runts but that's because of the way I was fishing I guess. I'll try the Gulp version, have not looked for hellgies for a long time.

OK...when I type in that address, I wind up here: http://fishingcompleteinc.com/

????? :huh::(

Found this though: http://www.fishingcompleteinc.com/lil-hellgrammite/

...and look up "Mop Fly".  Tie it on a heavier weight and it'll work on ultralight gear.

Had a bag for years, but have yet to fish them as I never remember to bring them along.  They are very thin and soft, was thinking of rigging them wacky to start.

I also have a savage gear mayfly, but same story, I never remember to pack it along when I go for smallies.

I always thought a black hair jig meant hellgies to smallies. One of the most consistent

producers over the years for me.A Ned rig might mean the same to them?

Maybe those two  look like mad toms?
