I know this forum is superior to "walleye" forums haha, but surely some of you catch both smallmouth and walleye in the same waters, with similar baits at times.
I find myself fishing for both fairly often. Is there a particular bait or rod/reel combo you like for both?
I think I've probably caught the biggest mix of each while vertical jigging, with plastics or minnows, but thats not my favorite tactic really. Just looking for good fish catching ability while searching for different types of fish.
Jerk baits, crank baits, jigging spoons, blade baits, jigs & hair jigs all come to mind.
I prefer a mhm rod for treble baits paired with either a certate spinning reel or a shimano bantam casting reel. A mhf or extra fast rod for the jigs, spoons & blade baits.
This year on Lake St Clair we tore up the Walleye on SPRO Little John crankbaits both original and medium divers, Dropshot rigs, Senkos, and Ned rig. We couldn't keep them off our baits and we were fishing for smallmouth. ????
I don't catch walleye as easily dead sticking artificials, but 3" - 4" soft swimbaits and grubs swimming lazily just above bottom will entice either species.

On the river I'm not fishing any differently. Grubs, tubes, crankbaits, jerkbaits, split shot/drop shot rigs. I've caught Walleye on these. I don't think I ever caught one on a lizard, pig and jig, or topwater lure. They are a nice occasional catch when you are not expecting it.
Luhr Jensen Super Duper spoon.
Jig them for Smallmouth, use them while trolling for Walleye. Nothing I use catches both species as well as this spoon.
soft swimbaits!
Blade Baits, Rattle Baits, Spinner baits, Jerk Baits, several Crank Baits, Jigging Rap, and almost anything on a jighead; including but not limited to a curly tail grub, swim bait, and even a craw.

For me pretty much any bass lure worked below the surface will work for walleye. I've caught them on soft plastics, hard baits, spinners and jerkbaits. For some reason rattletraps catch more walleye for me than they do bass.
Dark Sleeper catches both smallmouth and walleyes. Have to go 3/4+ oz though to keep in touch with the bottom if over 8 fow though. Here’s a couple caught this year on the DS in 3-6 fow in a 1/2 oz:
So, from this thread you've probably realized that the answer is "literally anything used to catch smallmouth will also catch walleye."

Yes, thanks for all the info guys. Ive used many of the above, and not caught walleye. Others have worked for me. Ill be focusing a little more on grubs and small swimbaits fished close to bottom this year. That and thecrazy amount of cranks I bought this winter that I convinced myself I needed...haha.

And the catch of a Musky on Smallie gear happens once and awhile. A thrill even if the musky are small.
Spoons. Caught my PB smallie and Walleye on red and white spoon don't know why but fish go nuts over the red and white spoon
We can add the Z-Man Jack Hammer to the list ~

one bait that has caught a lot of walleyes for me while bass fishing is a trick worm on a shakyhead.

I catch a walleye now and then by accident...but if you want to be successful for both, I think that tactic is your best bet.
Where I run into walleye is when they are up shallow, or on a break to deeper water and a bit more aggressive than normal and I'll pick them up with smallie rigs.

Add Doctor Spoons to your arsenal. Bigger wobble, I like them a lot.
I would fish them with a pike/musky leader though, if either is in your area. They like them...a lot...

Ajay, what weight Jack Hammer are you using and how deep can you go effectively? I hear the JH will stay down a little more than for instance the Original or Project Z...

I was throwing the 1/2 oz and it 'may' run a bit deeper but it's not like it crashed to the bottom or anything.
Either way, I'm a big fan -
I talked about what I was doing a bit right here . . .

Minnow or leach on a jighead! All the best artificial/lure options have already been mentioned.
I've had good luck, year round with the Binsky blade lures
Keitech easy shiners with a ball head jig.. 1/8-1/4 oz.. I usually fish 3/16oz.. yo-yo it off the bottom.. or just slow roll it along the bottom.. both species love them!
We do this a lot. Mostly fishing shallow when minnows spawn. Crawdads are in the shallows at the same time.
black 1/8 oz. jig with 3" or 4" orange tail
square bill crank bait in orange & black color
any crank bait in orange / black / red
1/4oz ball jig and a curly tail.
Tube on tube hook, light floro on spinning rod. Crack it, drag it, bump it, slow, fast...change weights and try it differently. Start with a 3 inch then try bigger or smaller until you dial in... just whatever they like that day. Hard to beat a tube. I’ve caught them on every color they make, but I usually stick to green, brown or black or shades in between.
Stick baits....Husky Jerks are my favorite of this style.
