Well, if you consider VA part of the NE....
probably not, but hey, what evs, take the
Gary Yamamoto Shad Shaped Worm and
nose hook it and hold on. I love these baits
for drop shotting.

I don't know what the best is, but I have favorites. Day in day out, it's hard to beat a 4" green pumpkin finesse worm. Some of my other favorites are:
Yum Sharpshooter's
Yum Warning Shot's
3" + 4" Yum Dingers
3" Gulp Leech's and Minnows

Welcome to the site Bigbasscav.
Reapers, RoboWorms, Crosstail Shad, ringworms, and grubs are the most common baits that I throw. Pretty much any soft plastic will work on a drop shot. Like A-Jay mentioned craws work great too, as do lizards. I've seen people throw suspending jerkbaits and other hardbaits on them too with success.

Drop shot / Split shot rig is my favorite way to fish. Too many styles and colors to name my favorite. If you are starting out or new. I would suggest Berkley Power Worms, Lizards, Tubes and Grubs. This is a good base line product to start out with and they will catch bass anywhere.

I've heard a few times on this site that just about any 4-5' bait nose hooked, Texas, or wacky rigged on a good hook in the right DOW and area will catch fish. So when you are thinking about DS'ing, the choice of lure is probably one of the least important factors.

I like jackal shads for drop shots. Hook it though the snout. Just a little wiggle of the rod will do the trick. Good luck

Good info on here. Anyone else have lesser known favs for dropshot? I'm new to it too. I like the look of the jackal crosstails, kid dreamshots, and 4" roboworms.

You can use anything as a drop shot bait. I've had success with tubes, soft jerk shads, sluggos, fake leeches, you name it! Don't get too hung up on what you are using for bait; rather, focus on presentation. And here's a hint: you do not have to keep twitching the bait, for it to be effective. With tubes, I just hold it still. Suddenly the rod tip goes down!

4" roboworm, rage craw or SK dreamshots are all great baits. I will say last year the dreamshots out produced everything else I tried.

Anyone used Sworming Hornet Drop Shot heads? Saw them on sale and wondered "Why?" If a drop shot has, by definition, a bottom contact weight below the bait...why would I want an almost a half ounce of lead at the plastic?

The Angler's Choice Killshot is a good bait. It's made in Ontario and designed for smallmouth dropshotting.

Follow the advice of Crestliner2008.
I'll mention the 3" Lunker City Slug-Go again. This little bait has been around for a long time but it's still as effective as ever. It's even better if you slather it up with MegaStrike.

Ya know Will, there is just something about that 3" Sluggo that is just incredible. What an underrated bait! When nose hooked and twitched (sparingly) on a drop shot rig, it "side flashes" in a most provocative fashion. Drive smallies nuts!

There was a 25th anniversary article about them in a recent In-Fisherman. Seems like they would be a good lure to try, as most of the waters I fish are a shad based ecosystem.

I "bubba" drop shot more often than I finesse drop shot. If I'm going to stick with the approach for a while, I've found that the 5" GULP sinking minnow works good. If I'm just trying different stuff here and there, then that bait dries out too fast. I've had decent success with the Berkley crazy legs Chigger Craw.

Two things I've read about but haven't tried.
1) A drop shot doesn't have to be all finesse all the time. Up size line, lures and baits and power fish it so to speak.
2) Mentioned above but use a jig or other bottom bouncing bait instead of just a weight. I've bee wanting to try a Bitsy Bug Jig.

Any of the smoke holos for clear water. Green pumpkin or mg special for goby lakes. River rat is an awesome color too (not sure if it's available to the public yet, you'll have to check).

@ChoporozYou're thinking about it all wrong. As mentioned above, put the hornet on the bottom AS your contact weight. Still have you're favorite weightless DS bait above. Double dose.

Surprisingly, I've found that fishing a tube on the bottom will get you the "most" bites, of bass in all size categories. However, I've found that over the past 2 seasons especially, drop shotting a tube (nose hooked only) will get you the BIGGEST bites. Not quite sure why this is, but I'm not going to look a "gift horse" in the mouth either!

I have done this many many times, especially when the spinshot style drop shot hooks first came out a few years ago............ the funny thing is..................it tells me nothing. I have had days when they wouldn't bite either bait, where they would bite both seemingly at random, and days when the prefer one to the other. I just have a tube (in the last few years a biffle head with a small creature/craw bait has all but replaced the tube for me) and a drop shot rigged up on different rods, and rarely if every combine them anymore.
