so im gonna take a small bass, about 5 inches give or take, out of the lake behind my house. the water is crystal clear and there are tons of small bream and bass around the edges. its really deep everywhere, it was an old rock quarrey, but you can see all the small fish near the banks about 2-5 feet down. well usually i can take ppl who have never fished or my little nephew there with a tiny jig head with a little tube and catch one on every cast. for some reason when i went today to keep one for my aquarium not one would bite it. most of them are small bream but any advice on what to use to catch one of the small bass?
use little curly tailed jigs.
order some bait from ***(sp) so you can win a sontest to boot .
The little suckers at the local pond here will hit anything and i mean anything. so i cant help you much.
tiny lil crappie jigs
well if you said normally you catch them left and right, then just do what you have always done.
maybe they just werent biting today.
i would continue to do what you've been doing for at least another week and if you still dont get one, try one of these: http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_44322_175002003_175000000_175002000_175-2-3
little bass and bream cant stand the things!
Id continue to use small jigs, but also a tiny crank will work great, and a minnow on a bobber will work wonders! Good luck
wild gamefish weren't meant to be kept for pets, get a farm raised Oscar.
Feeding a bass in captivity isn't easy, he wants 2/3 his body weight in food EVERY day. Please don't keep one (Illegal or not) if you don't plan on working every day to support it.
You said you were pulling them out just great before , you have one day when they aren't biting and you are baffled , do what you have been doing and you will catch your baby bass.
Use a small black w/ yellow stripe bettle spin.
drop shot on 2lb test flourocarbon line #1 gammy split shot hook- 2-4" straight tail worm

it was born free......let it live and die that way......
it will have plenty of food and a nice aquarium, im in college and there is nothing to do so i would have plenty of time to take care of him. i just think its kinda hypocritical to say its not right to keep one when we all go out and trick them into thinking theyre getting a nice meal then getting jerked right out of their home and into a livewell and sometimes killed or injured. I dont think they like that. I love animals just as much as anyone, when he gets too big for my aquarium I'll take him to a pond nearby. Thanks most of you for the advice
Just make sure it's legal.....
And from what i read in north carolina fishing regulations it ain't legal...

X3.
Seriously; no disrespect intended but get a fish that's meant to be a pet.
What did you see that would make it illegal? I just looked it up and i will be using a hook and line and it is a private lake, my family owns it. Its only certain public places that have a size minimum. I respect what you guys are saying that dont agree with it. I have the same feelings towards keeping dogs inside the house but my gf thinks otherwise so we have arguments about this stuff alot. I have done lots of research on it and I think you guys should look it up a little. theres lots of websites on keeping bass in an aquarium.
In many states it is illegal. no matter how you catch em and creel limit sizes aside to
A. Keep a game fish in captivity
b.Sell gamefish
c. transport them from one body of water to another
check your local laws before going down this road

In case you have you noticed there is a law against everything.

Don't invite any game wardens over for dinner if that's the case.
Seriously, I don't think anything outside of a dog or cat was "meant" to be kept as a pet. Just keep in mind that game fish in a tank need special attention. Just like a moray eel, piranha, or any other unusual aquatic animal (that some people keep as pets).

im not sure if im overlooking anything but there is the inland game fish regulations for n.c so if you can find where i would be breaking the law please tell me because it looks perfectly legal to me
The limit is 14 inches..even if it's a private lake are you sure the limit doesn't apply?
Best I can say is contact your local wildlife center....even if it's allowed, you will probably hear the same thing from them that we here are telling you.
if im not mistaken that is naming specific bodies of water such as public lakes and parts of rivers that have size limits. some have 14, some 16, 18, 20, 26 inch limits but thats just for those certain lakes or rivers right?
Not always...just like all the little lakes i fish none of them are mentioned in the book...however our 14" size limit applies to all waters.Private ponds and golf course may be excluded from those set of rules(they have their own rules).
Each state is different....just contact your wildlife center.
well i went with 2 small warmouths instead of bass lol couldnt get the small bass to bite anything before these would get to it. theyve already eaten a goldfish and beta fish so i guess they'll be cool pets
Try a small panther martin inline spinner. I like the yellow tail ones the bass like them too. I was fishing a small place were its never been fished with a panther martin and was catching bass after bass. A little baitmate scent works too I like the orginal bass scent.
Wacky rig a 3" watermelon red flake senko. They're dink magnets.
Small bread the size of a pea, with a split shot 12" above the line. I recommend using Owner Circle hooks in size 1. Wacky rigged live Crawlers will also work. Chum up the area first.
