Thoughts On October's Mtb? No Spoilers! 2024

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

For those that subcribe and have gotten the October box, are you happy with what's in it? I'm still waiting on mine, and I'm sure others are too so please NO SPOILERS! Thanks.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

Great stuff again, got mine today. I was surprised they fit everything in there.

fishing user avatarbleedingshrimp reply :

I would have to say yes. Make room your tackle bag.

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

Is MTB tailoring their bait selection to the time of year? Did we get some nice fall lures??

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

They'll be good any time of the year.

fishing user avatarMcAlpine reply :

As above, I dont know how they got it all in the box. Not exactly what I was looking for as I already have way to much of these types of items, but the quality level of the items is amazing as compared to like products. Two of them in particular I can't wait to see in the water. If nothing else they definitly fulfilled my estimation of what their vendors expectation of the deliverable would be. They put a product in my hands that I never would have known about any other way and I am impressed enough at just first glance that I think I have a new name brand I will be shopping for.

..and it was pretty darn fun getting the box and opening it....

The box is smaller in length/width than the plastic bags inside. I kept pulling the bags out ... another? and another!? and another!!

It will probably take me all month to lose all the stuff from this box. They are high quality lures from a small brand. I wish there was more terminal tackle this month though.

I'm going to modify my previous comment. Three of them I can't wait to see in the water....

...how's your patience holding up?

Checked the mail today and nothing. Like waiting for Christmas...

fishing user avatar11justin22 reply :

Mine showed up, surprised I'm usually the last one to get it. Very pleased. Lots of new stuff to try out.......

It tracked mine with no problem. Maybe your shipment got messed up?

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

Me and my girlfriend both subscribe and neither one will track.

fishing user avatarSouth FLA reply :

Got mine today, ironically I use some baits already, they are a local company. Like their Super Dipper, which is not part of this package, going to try some in the backyard pond.

fishing user avatarSilas reply :

I'll be the first to say that I'm a little disappointed. I'll comment later.....something on the order of "all your eggs in one basket." The quality looks nice, however.

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

I heard they were all a specific brand.

fishing user avatarShewillbemine reply :

Wait--I think I'm smart enough to figure out what this thread is discussing.

How do I get in on this? Do I have to pay for something?

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

There is a image link on the right side by the sponsors of the site too.

fishing user avatarbassin is addicting reply :

got mine today....

mixed feelings. while there are one or 2 that i had some curiousity about before and am glad i will now get to check out. i was disappointed that they were all one brand and basically one technique. but, i will say that all seem to be good quality stuff and will find the water.

and, i too wish there were more terminal tackle items as well as another technique.

BUT the amount of baits was very good and was pleased with that!

since this was my 1st box and i got it for the $4.99 special.... i am pleased.... if it were a $15 box i may feel different??

gotta say that i was anxiously waiting.... that part is fun. :)

and will keep my subscription to see what comes next monthand will evaluate from there...

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

Got mine today, and I have to say that I'm disappointed. As noted above, they are all pretty much one technique and I already have a ton of this stuff on hand anyway. Also, the amount in the packs is disappointing and this box feels much more like a sampler than anything, which if you read the card it is. For this time of year, I was hoping for some hard top water lures or shallow cranks. Something along the lines of what was in August's box. I'll give it another go next month, but if it's not vastly better my $15 will go to BPS instead.

fishing user avatar11justin22 reply :

A couple of thoughts after reading some comments.

Mtb asked a while back if everyone would rather have a lot of samples or a couple of full packs. The consensus was very much that everyone would like samples. I believe that is why this box has a bunch of samples. We asked for it.

Just because they are plastics does NOT mean they are the same technique. A swimbait is not the same as a fluke, neither is a beaver style bait same as a ten inch worm. Agree a couple are close to the same like the two different beaver baits but that's about it.

I'm fine with the same brand but could see where some people might not so I will stay neutral on that :)

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

MTB has done a good job of mixing up their baits that are packed in. For me seeing that we got all soft plastics was a bit of a let down, but there are a few baits in here I'm eager to try. August's box would've been perfect for fall fishing, and I was hoping we'd get more stuff along those lines.

fishing user avatarrockchalk06 reply :

I was dissapointed as well. I liked the fluke and the 10" worm, but everything else was well, will probably never get used. I liked the bait cards they used before in the previous boxes talking about techniques or presentations for each bait. These just had the names of the bait on one card. I kinda felt like I got short changed.

The craws were dead ringers for the Paca Craws and the little worms were Zoom Trick worms ringers. The toads, were matched up to the Ribbit frogs too. I know companies will knock off each others products and call it something different, but if you do, you need to add some different sent, salt or sell it to me for one hellova price.

I would like to have seen the hooks have a size on them and the weight of the weighted hook. I thought more of the hooks would have been cool too. I assume after matching them up against my others, they are 5/0 and the weight is 1/4 oz???

Last months box we got a jig, chatterbait, trailers/craws and a wacky rig set up. 4-5 different ways to fish baits. This box, basically 1-2.

I know the whole idear is to give us a sample of different baits to use and I respect that, but last months box had 5 wacky worms and 6 trailers (kick arse trailers I might add). Half my packages had 2 or 3 baits this time.

One a side note the plastics look and feel well built. No nasty left over plastic from the molding etc. The 10" worm in what ever color they call it, I will probably be buying more of when they have it listed. I liked the color and the backbone of the worm is different from anything I have ever seen so I am assuming same goes for the fish.

I'm hoping next months box will have atleast different brands. All of the same brand of bait (minus the hooks) Kinda feels like your throwing it all in my face at once. No disrespect to Bruiser baits, but they are not Strike King or Berkley etc where we know their quality and trust it. I felt that say.... no more than 2-3 Brusiers would have been better.

A suggestion for MTB, Septembers box covered the spectrum pretty good aside from needing a plastic for T-rigging. Thats something to go off of. I think the majority of people signed up for October's box simply because of what cool stuff we got in September. Thats gonna be hard for to say the same about next months.

I may be way to critical and my no means am I bashing what MTB is doing. Its only box #3 and there are alot more to go.

I for the life of my cant figure their tracking out. I wonder if its not a tracking # more just a delivery conformation #. It showes its been dispatched until it arrives. Then it shows all the stops?

fishing user avatarMysteryTackleBox reply :

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all the feedback so far. We wanted to try something different for October and see what the feedback was. About 80% of the feedback has been that the box was awesome and people loved getting so many different products. About 20% has been that people wished there were different brands and not all plastics.

We are only 3 months in and so we want to try different things and see what the feedback is and adjust as we go. Next month's box will not be all one brand and will not be all plastics.

As far as the thought that all baits are basically the same technique, we have to disagree with that. Just because they are all plastics does NOT mean they are all the same technique. This box probably allows for more techniques than any other box we have done. This box covers:

Texas Rigging (10" Curly Tail, Craw)

Carolina Rig (10" Curly Tail)

Drop Shot (Diamond Tail)

Shaky Head (Diamond tail)

Top water (Kickin' Frog, Craw rigged weightless, Super Swimmer rigged weightless)

Flipping/Pitching (Intruder/Avenger/Craw)

Jerk Bait/Fluke (Rad Shad)

Swim bait (Super Swimmer with weighted hook)

There are a ton of options here.

As far as there not being bait cards, we didn't think we needed 9 bait cards for the bruiser items when we could merge them to one card. The link on the inside of the card takes you to a page with all the expanded rigging info and the videos for each bait.

Thanks again for all of the feedback and we look forward to taking the feedback and tweaking our service. We will never be able to please everyone, but we will try our hardest to please as many people as we can.

fishing user avatarbassin is addicting reply :

i should amend my comment...they are NOT all one technique....i should have said/meant all one catagory...soft baits.

that said. i am glad that MTB stays postive even when comments are not always positve.

fishing user avatarpiscicidal reply :

You guys need to try that bruiser intruder flipping bait that's included in the box. Those appendages on the side continue to flair out when the bait hits bottom making a very tantalizing presentation.

fishing user avatarbassin is addicting reply :

the intruder and the fluke type interest me the most...

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

August's box was the best and baits found in that box would've been ideal for this type of year.

fishing user avatarsarcazmo reply :

Overall I'm pretty happy with it.

I've been wanting to practice a couple techniques in particular and this as allowed me to do so. Some of the plastics look intriguing too.

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

I'd love to see MTB emphasize baits for the what season we are in. I've had to go out and buy some spooks, spinners, buzzbaits...it would be nice to have gotten these in the October box. That was $15 I could've dropped on Fall/topwater lures.

Agreed. Though they can't please us all, I still think 9 items by the same company was overkill. I love SK products but 9 different SK plastics would have been overkill too. I'm hoping next months is more of a variety

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

I dunno. If I got 9 packs of Rage Tails I'd be happy as heck. Wasn't impressed with the Bruisers though at all. November's box will hopefully be better. If not, I'm canceling my subscription.

fishing user avatarsarcazmo reply :

I don't know how realistic it is to expect MTB to 'hit a home run' every month.' No matter what they include there will probably be some people that arent happy.

From a purely monetary standpoint, is there $15 dollars worth there? Probably. From a value standpoint its much more subjective. Considering I was going to place an order for some swimbait hooks, hollow body swimbaits, and plastic frogs this month had value to me as I wanted to try these techniques.

As far as the brand I wont knock them because I havent tried them yet but I'm sure they'll catch fish.

fishing user avatarJig Meister reply :

A little late to the post but,

I love MTB's service, it has really been a god send to me, and is actually saving me money on tackle.

I, like most of us have more than I will ever use to start with, and instead of spending all sorts of money on things at gander I get this little package and really staves my addiction to tackle :D

But really, I was a huge skeptic before the first box and I couldn't be happier with what I have gotten, everything has been useful, and quality (except the z-mann chatter bait, I personally think they make cheap stuff in general but effective). Even if sometimes we get samples, it is fine because usually I buy plastics that I never end up using and wish I had the option to only buy a few.

So A+ for MTB thus far from this bass fisherman!

I love SK and Rage tail myself....but everyone has to start some where. Bruiser Baits could be the next Rage Tails....you just never know. I didn't mind the assortment of plastics this time around. They can be fished many different ways. As stated above, I think that putting out lures by season is challenging because Florida's fall is different than Minnesota's fall. Southern California seasons are different than Northern California, etc etc... Demographics would be impossible to match by seasons.

While I agree there are better lure choices for each individual season, you're still able to catch fish through out the year with your standard baits except for maybe top water applications. MTB has an enormous array of "type" anglers to appease with their boxes. One month might be a gem for you, while the next is a complete flop.

I think BassResource is an excellent forum for MTB to get feedback from because there is certainly a lot of different opinions that pulse through here.

fishing user avatarsarcazmo reply :

The reason I posted it was some people were a little dissatisfied with the number of plastics included and some people hadn't heard of the company. It's always nice to see the stuff you bought catchign fish, regardless of who was using them or where they were caught.

U might be able to catch a bass but not a snowballs chance can anyone catch 35 pounds worth. That is a 7 pound average. That was something awesome. And the fact that he was using a lure that was included in the box just proves that it's not junk.

fishing user avatarSudburyBasser reply :

I was in Chicago (went to the Monday night Bears-Lions game) for the past week and only arrived home an hour ago. Found the new MTB on my desk and was pretty excited to open it based on the early comments in this thread. End result? I wouldn't have bought a damned thing in the box.

Pause for dramatic effect

Which is why I subscribed to MTB in the first place, to be exposed to stuff that I normally wouldn't have bought. Heck, we can't get Bruiser Baits in any store up here so I don't mind all the stuff from one company. Gives me a chance to give them a thorough going over and it only cost $15. I spent more than that on lunch today and I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much as I will playing around with these baits (though the sandwich was pretty damned good).

So well done to MTB because I was pleased.

I fail to see where anyone called anything out the the box junk?

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

I didn't say the stuff was junk. Just thought it was by far the worst box so far. 2 outta 3 ain't bad though.

fishing user avatarBASSHUNTER1961 reply :

I just feel that for $180.00 per year I can buy a lot of tackle, and things I want and actually use. Also, if every 2 out of 3 boxes are not good, that's $60.00 down the drain per year.

fishing user avatarTNBassin' reply :

So far 1 out of 3 have been bad imo. August's and September's box were pretty good.

fishing user avatarPABASS reply :

So it’s a 180$ a year sales gimmick, but with fishing lures what isn’t, right? I certainly don’t know every lure out there and this could expose me to something I have never seen(along with fish I don’t currently catch) and if they provide a service meaning they explain the lures use that’s added value, do they go into detail about a lure that you know nothing about? Be nice if they had different plans, I would pay 8$ a month to get less lures that’s a risk I can take and still spend monies on lures that are a known to me.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

It's $180 if you pay month to month. $165 if you paid a full 12 month subscription. So essentially a free month to you for committing to a year.

I wouldn't call it a gimmick as the value of the box is well over the $15 if you looked into the retail of the actual products you received. If you are open to trying out new manufacturers of lures, then this is a great way to do it. It exposes you to some great quality stuff that you may have just never seen or simply wouldn't acknowledge on your regular bait shop visits.

There are many fishermen that will not subscribe simply because they want to pick out the lures they like or have trust in. They want to know where their dollar is going. This is completely understandable and from the company's feedback it seems they understand that too. They're not going to win over everyone. I, like everyone else, have my favorite brands and go to baits. I can continue to buy them year round and do the same old thing. This is a good choice to expand. The great thing is that it's no commitment, you cancel whenever you want.

There is a reason they call it "Mystery Tackle Box", it's a mystery! MTB is for those who are more "open-minded" so to speak. It is a bit of gamble. But, so far they have produced boxes with superb quality items. They list and show everything on the site once it is revealed.

The FAQ said it provides a small card for each bait, is it descriptive on how to best utilize the bait? Its a sales gimmick and that's not a negative statement, really you could do the same thing each month, instead your paying a company to do it for you, again not saying its a negative, for people like me whom don't have much time I can see value in this service. Its an interesting idea..

I've been putting a lot of thought into this MTB thing, and the way I see it is... Not everyone will be happy every month, there is just no way around it. There are just way too many variables. Take it for what it is, or leave it.

You're right. Everyone is different, but MTB set the bar pretty high in August and September and put all their eggs in one basket so to speak for October. Some liked it, others like myself didn't and that's ok. Not everyone is gonna be pleased every month you're right, but I'm confident that I'll be more happy than not when that magic little box gets delivered.
fishing user avatarupnorthbassin reply :

I've been to the website a couple of times but I don't see myself signing up. I do think the concept is great but I think they need to put together something into a more "all-in-one" sort of package. For instance, instead of a bunch of bags of worms, creatures, etc....put 1/2 that number or less and some new hooks to try with them that fit the particular baits.

Or maybe include all the components of certain types of rigs. That way someone who has never tried a certain rig can just open up the box and have everything they need to go and fish it. Maybe include a photocopy of instructions on how to rig it for guys that aren't familiar. That concept would be fantastic for a beginner and would make a nice gift to a kid or someone just starting out. Maybe have a pro include all the components and instructions/tips on how they fish one of their more productive rigs or something.

Now, not every rig is for everyone but you could include more than one in a box (and still be at the same value) or toss in a crankbait, jig, etc along with it. Make it go with the season.....so say this month have a complete float n fly rig or 2 along with a crankbait/spinnerbait.

Not everyone would even be happy with that but you can't please them all. I understand that manufacturers are sending in their products to be sent out in this so the variety may not be really wide...especially since it hasn't been around long....but it would be nice to see something like that in the future.

They already have been doing that. Bass Jigs come paired with trailers with appropriate color combos, soft plastics come with hooks to use, senko style worms with Wacky style jig hooks, crankbaits, buzzbaits, chatterbaits have all been in the mix.

Good feedback. We actually do most of what you suggested already. Check out the September box as an example: http://mysterytacklebox.com/past-boxes/september-2012 and all baits come with a card that has some info on how to fish it and links to the in-depth video demos on the site.

I have sank over 150 dollars on stick bait senkos etc, and still have not caught a single fish one on any of them. lol

I'm completely serious too. I have fished them everyway I can and nothing. Now Jigs, SB's and top water I have been killing almost every lake.

Could be. The hog tonic looks and smells alot like JJ's Magic dip.

I have friends that swear by and have given up on everything but the stick worms. I'm a persistent bass-turd so I wont give up just yet.
