Spring Break Fishing Trip Suggestions? 2024

fishing user avatarIowaHusker28 reply :

So being from Iowa I hate the winter (Other than the Hunting) and my fishing cabin fever is hitting pretty hard right now to say the least. I've watched old FLW's and old Elite episodes and I'm a little upset that I watched all the old MLF's last year. Anyway getting to the point, I have spring break from March 15th-23rd and I am thinking about heading south to get some fishing in, and even if its slow its better than nothing. The only thing is, I have no clue what the fishing is like during this time period down yonder. My question is leaving out Cali and Florida lakes, if you had to pick 2 or 3 lakes to go to in this time period where would you go and why? Thanks in advance!

fishing user avatarGatorbassman reply :

It all depends on what part of the spawn you want to fish. Most of the South will still be in prespawn but if you go far enough south you will find some in full spawn. Are you willing to go to Texas or Alabama or Georgia?

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

How much money you got to spend?  Want to go to Mexico?  or not?   From Ames, Iowa, Bull Shoals or Table Rock is very drivable.   There is generally a decent bite happening that time of year - either A-rigs or jerk baits or shaky heads, maybe football heads, I don't know exactly.  What I do know is that the Ozark Lakes are pretty in the early spring and they all have fish in them.  There are areas on Bull Shoals that if you went in the middle of the week, you probably wouldn't see another boat.  I dunno - just a suggestion.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Probably to late but ya should call Tom Redington Lake Fork.

fishing user avatarIowaHusker28 reply :

Heck yea Texas, Alabama, and Georgia are all open to consideration at this point! This is just an idea up in the air right now that I just started throwing around to a few people, my other spring break plans fell through. So my thought process is why not get a good week of fishing in and go somewhere that is worth the trip. I've actually never fished for bass anywhere below the Tablerock line and I've been dying to these last few years. I'm trying to hit 3 birds with one stone here; fish somewhere I've never been, hold off the cabin fever until our thaw, and have a great week of fishing! Also getting out of below freezing temps would be nice.

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

Funny how things have changed....i always thought spring break was for drinking and chasing tail....who knew :)

fishing user avatarIowaHusker28 reply :

Haha! well the "previous plan" that fell through was Panama City,  and I was looking forward to that, Cancun was also in discussion but I mean a break from school and fishing is never a bad thing.  Like I said before this all on the table Its nice to have multiple ideas to choose from. As for drinking and chasing tail who says you have to be on a beach?

Fishing could be described as chasing tail! Maybe bass or striper...Anyhow, I was going to throw the Florida Keys in the hat. It is a fun place! However, you may want to check out Lake Ouachita in Arkansas. There will be plenty of reasonably priced lodging and 40,000 acres to fish.

fishing user avatarindianabasshunter reply :

I've never been there but check out the stringers of fish that were caught at Lake Chickamauga last spring. There were 40lb bags weighed in. I'm not sure if they were catching them that early last year but I know that many of my best days in Indiana are usually in March or earlier.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

Been doing the spring break thing with my son and dad for 10 years or so. We have fished many of the top rated bass lakes around the south east always during the last week of March or first week of April. The best fishing by far has been on Kentucky Lake with a close second on Guntersville.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Avoid CA in march!

fishing user avatarpancityhanman reply :

you may want to check out atlanta, several local lakes and you still have the city if you want to get out a night or two. by march bite will be up and you have 3 or 4 lakes within an hour to an hour and a half, depending on where you stay in town. good luck wherever you go

fishing user avatargeo g reply :

Winter fishing I would go to lake istapoga just north of lake placid.  Big bass fishing without the pressure of Okeechobee.  Good lodging in the area.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I'd be looking towards Guntersville if it were me. I did a fishing trip on my spring break also, good times :)

Why dont you fish the Midwest B.A.S.S. Conference Regional on lake of the ozarks?   You would know that if you were on the Nebraska team. I suggest you get in contact with them, those guys are pretty cool.  Im going on a family trip so i wont be there this year.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

1.  Florida

I was just in Ames for the first time a couple of weeks ago. We went to see my fiancé's grandma in the hospital there. It was snowing like crazy.

I would definitely recommend Lake Fork in Texas and you can't beat FLW Tour Pro Tom Redington as a guide. http://www.lakeforkguidetrips.com

I have fished with him and he is a fun dude and a great fisherman. The guy OWNS Lake Fork.  lol

If my memory serves me right, I think he comes on these forums sometimes.

fishing user avatarcamovan reply :

Lets see, spring break, warm weather, fishing AND tail: Lake Havasu!

fishing user avatarCaylub reply :

Panama city sucks dude. Its just a million drunk ppl acting stupid. It was fun as a kid but the older you get the lamer it gets. I vote for Guntersville as well. I have been there yet, but I plan on trying to get up there this year.

Your school has a club get in contact with them. You are missing out if you are not taking advantage of the club.

fishing user avatarBigBassBarry reply :

I'm fishing fork during spring break time.  I can't wait.

fishing user avatarcrankmaster33 reply :

I would want to go to either a lake in Atlanta GA or Kentucky lake those are actually my two options either way I think I will have a good time

fishing user avatarcbass12 reply :

Texoma is another option for you. There are some big smallmouth in there and the stripers are a blast. A buddy and I went there back in march of '07 and got a guide, weather was unseasonably cold but we still caught a ton of fish and I caught my at that time PB smallmouth.
