Please confirm my best guess that the fish pictured with the ruler is a Largemouth Bass and the other is a Smallmouth Bass.
Correct.
Yep
yup..
Yep, and great example of how LMB are so much prettier.

Well, largemouth are pretty but I don't know about that...when the sun hits a smallmouth right, and it's tiger-striped warpaint pops out in stark relief, there's nothing prettier.

Yeah but it's like a woman who needs just the right angle and lighting vs the one who is always pretty no matter the angle or lighting.
I don't see any ruler in either picture. There is a tape measure in both pictures, but no ruler...
Identification is correct, but it bugs me when people lay out fish on boat decks or towels. It removes the protective slime coating and is bad for overall fish health

Those look like they are already at the cleaning table to me

makes sense
Why did you wipe the bass off with a paper towel?

The smallmouth pictured just happens to be pretty ugly, lol!

No doubt, both of them can be really ugly, but smallmouth are way prettier fish on average IMO.

I agree.
Looks like to me it is catch and grease also but your identification is correct.

The LM looks like it still has a hoot in it's mouth. Seriously, a paper towel is one of the worst things you can put a fish on if you are planning on releasing
Your ID is correct but in Smallmouth's defense, they are not an ugly fish They are my favorite targets!! And just to add, if those are eating fish, you picked the right size. Nothing wrong with harvesting bass no matter the species (as long as it's legal).
Yes and yes.

I want to thank everybody for the IDs.
It appears to me that most folks here are catch and release sport fisherman. I respect that. You can say that I fish for the sport as it is a sport, (especially the fights that the Bass put up) but I also fish to eat. I am a law abiding citizen and New York State says that between the third Saturday in June and November 30th, I'm allowed to keep up to 5 Smallmouth/Largemouth Bass, as long as they are at least 12 inches long. You should all respect my right to do so. As long as I'm fishing from non-polluted clean waters, I always keep what I am allowed to.
That being said, when I land a Bass (or any other fish) that is obviously not a keeper, or if I measure it and it comes up short, I immediately release it without harm and I never handle any catch with a paper towel, unless I know I that I am going to keep it.
I don't want to offend anybody, but from some of these and other replies to my posts when I've embedded pictures, it is clear to me that many people assume that I'm going to release the fish and feel that it is more appropriate to release Bass than it is to keep. If I or any other licensed fisherman keeps what's allowed, it is just as appropriate.
The Largemouth in the picture will be my dinner tomorrow.
I really appreciate this community but needed to speak up.
Thanks again.

Put either species of fish in a dark livewell for awhile and their colors are bold and really stand out. Put any woman in a dark room and they all look the same.

False. Once eyes adjust you can definitely tell which one has a bigger profile.

I know it's hard to tell what someone is thinking when you read it in text, without seeing facial expressions, hearing a tone of voice and seeing other body language. I have a warm, friendly smile on my face as I tell you that none of the quotes you showed appear to me as degrading keeping fish. Others were simply asking why the paper towel and I just pointed out that it looks like they are being kept. I have seen tons of threads talking about how good a bass feast was and there is even a member here who's "handle" is Catch-n-Grease; and he takes no flack for it; he's a good kid. I don't want you to feel like you were degraded for keeping those fish, because you weren't. This place is known for it's friendly, accepting members and will continue to be that place.

I certainly have no problem if you eat your catch as long as you or anyone else do so legally. That's your prerogative. I personally do not eat fresh water fish but respect your decision to do so.
LMB are certainly not endangered and as long as a life is not wasted, I'm don't care. My point was that it is infuriating to see uneducated anglers mishandle fish then release them. It's disrespectful to the species and mother nature.

Yeah, I just sort of assumed. I have absolutely nothing against catch and cook and sometimes do it myself. I guess since most people are catch and release it's kinda the mentality I've picked up a little.
Certainly nothing wrong with legally harvesting/eating the bass you catch.
My question for you @Pkfish49. If you weren't 100% certain on the ID of the fish you kept and ate, how were you 100% certain it was legal for you to keep them?

I knew both fish were either Smallmouth Bass or Largemouth Bass and both were at least 12 inches, (The Smallmouth was just 12 inches) so they were keepers. New York State regulations are the same for both Smallmouth and Largemouth.
Most fishermen and women here know that legal harvest is good for a fishery. That being said, I have found many other species that just plain taste better than bass to me. And the good thing is that many of the species I like to release into lake Crisco are prolific breeders and the creel limits are much higher so I get multiple meals out of every trip. Crappie, White Bass, Stripers, Wipers, White Perch, Ring Perch, Walleye, Northern Snakehead, and various species of Sunfish, all come home for dinner if caught in an outing or whether I am specifically targeting them. The concern you picked up on was that "IF" you were going to release them then you need to give them the best chance of survival. Enjoy your dinner!!

I did enjoy my dinner! I basically steamed it by wrapping in in aluminum foil, placing it in a frying pan and putting the flame on high for 16 minutes a side. I usually fry fish in butter but I found that this method works better for Bass as it keeps the natural juices.
Thanks
love me some fried flounder
