Enough is enough!!! 2024

fishing user avatarabelfisher reply :

I don't want to offend ANYONE on this forum.  But, I think enough has been said about whether or not the recent catch at Dixon Lake is a World Record or not.  GIVE IT UP!!!  GEEEESH!

It is either a WR or it's not.  IT is what it is.

As far as whther or not the scale was certified is a pretty weak argument.  Why don't they just weigh out 25.1 pounds of weights on a "certified" scale and then take that same weight and put it on the scale they used.  Maybe it was off a few ounces....BFD!!!!  It would still be a WR catch!  Whether they did everything legitimately or not, so be it.  The fact is the fish was huge, 99.99999% chance it beat Perry's record.  Now whether the IFGA wants to certify it or not due to technicalities is up to them.  It would still be a WR.

Let's move on! ::) ::)

74 more years!!!!!! Goooo Georgia!!!!!! ;) Lets drop it for another 70 plus years. :)

fishing user avatarMadhouse27 reply :

Abel's got it right. Most of the debate has been about the fisherman...not the fish.

fishing user avatarbobo reply :

no way! As huge as this is, and bury it after a week? Yall just sit back and shh if it's getting to you :P

25 pounds and no questions after the way this has went? heh, for self-proclaimed WR hunters, they had to be the most ill-prepared fishermen in fishin history. I say enough praising him, then maybe I'll stop questioning his actions since the catch.

Of course someone state the obvious and remind me he's human....heh

No offense taken, Abel. But I'm curious why it bothers you if OTHERS want to discuss it. ????? Nobody's forcing anyone else to read what they don't want to.

Well, 1:  there seems to be quite a bit of personal attacks against these guys,

2: The arguments about "certified" scales is getting old.  My old spring loaded scale is within the difference of George Perrys catch and this new one.  Unless there were weights put in thisfish, it is hard to argue the this fish doesn't weigh more.

3: catching the fish in the depth of water they were fishing makes it hard for me to believe they intentionally snagged it. (see #1 above)

4: I perceive a many do not WANT a new WR bass caught!  Maybe protecting the WR fish from Georgia?? Also, some very negative feelings about fishermen in California.

5:  The fact of the matter is this is a HUGE Fish!  I do not doubt the fish weighed more than Perry's.  It is a WR fish.  Whether IFGA will not certify due to technicalities, is up to them.  It doen not negate the fact it is bigger than Perry's.

When all is said and done.  You are right. That is what this forum is for; for discussion about fishing.  It is exciting that there is so much excitment about a New WR catch.  I just don't like all the negative atacks and diversionary arguments about why it shouldn't be a WR.  It seems disingenuous. Marty, that is why I have had enough.  But you guys do have the right to carry on the discussion.  So Blast away!

fishing user avatarJnamo reply :

I agree that enough is enough...

Unless you have something new to add.  I have read most of the posts and everyone seems to be speculating and giving opinions about the same stuff.   ::)

Which is why were here, to give our thoughts.  But the same thing over and over and over and over and over and over...

If you have something new to add, highlight it and start a new thread.  It sure would be appreciated!

Some do seem to be hammering away at the same thing, like the slogan goes, "Enquiring minds want to know." did I spell that right?

One thing is for sure, we have been slamming Perry for 70 + years.

I figure it's time to slam someone else.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

This is the kind of stuff that makes forums fun.  I mean yeah, it's good to share knowledge and help out new bassers etc. but this is the kind of juicy meat that keeps

forums alive.

fishing user avatarTucson reply :

A new world record bass is certainly an exciting topic but....  I'd like to hear more facts and less speculation.  At this point I'm generally skipping the debate until the dust settles.

fishing user avatarMinuteman reply :

I haven't seen people this fired up since Hillary Clinton came around. Seriously, it sounds like pundits on TV talking about politics sometimes and following politcal debate is another hobby of mine. It gets so heated that you need a break and that is what fishing is all about.

Enough is Enough? I vote: YES!

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

So we should stop talking about a bass that was caught that blew the previous 70+ year old record away by 3lbs?

The previous record has been brought into the limelight recently by Bassmaster Magazine as to it's validity and now this fish is completely surrounded by controversy and we're not to talk about it?

What should we resume talking about? Helping people Price 10ft long john boats with no motors or what pound test line to put on someones first ever baitcasting reel?

This story is worthy of discussion because the more facts that come out about it the more controversial it becomes.

No, talk about the fish all you want. I believe Ablefisher, much like me and others, is just flat worn out by all the (trash) talk about the guy and the lack of talk about the fish.

As a matter of fact, this is the place that invites all newbies to come and learn more. So whether it's john boats and fishing lines or lure and techniques, we should be trying to help out where we can. Although it seems you have forgotten, most people had a learning curve.

I disagree. I for one would not have joined, if this Jr. High type of gossip and crap was the norm here. THIS forum was pretty healthy last week, last month and last year. Membership has been growing rapidly over the past year or more, without this kind of "juicy meat."

It's kinda hard to talk about the fish when so little data has been released about it.  It was weighed on and uncertified scale (we still have no idea what type, it might be a Zebco fish deliar), there was no length or girth measurements taken.  The fish was apparently on a bed and could be seen from the bank or a boat and was snagged.  There has been little released about the actual lure that was used. At first they said a white jig, then a white swimbait type jig with a treble hook in it.  The guy holding the fish isn't even the guy who caught it.  If that isn't enough to make this worthy of discussion than I don't know what is.

As for your comments about posts by newbies, this is a forum encouraging posters of all skill levels (supposedly), while I have no problem trying to steer new anglers in the right direction (you'll see from my posts I do just that), eventually more experienced anglers need to discuss fishing issues rather than just giving out advice. This is exactly the kind of topic both new and old anglers need to discuss.  This is about a new world record bass breaking a 70+ year old record.

As for your final comment, if you're that sensitive to real discussion about a topic as controversial as this fish, maybe you shouldn't tune into the thread.  The name calling and aspersions cast upon these anglers have been brought about largely by their own actions and words.  These 3 guys had seen this possible WR bass the day before, made sure they were first to have a crack at it with the camping pass and then, after hooking the fish, seemed completely incapable of making any decision correctly.  They knew this fish would bring them under scrutiny, realizing the circumstances of how it was caught, they should've handled this better.  Their actions and words have created the controversy, again, ignore the threads about it if it bothers you that bad.

fishing user avatarabelfisher reply :

Well, the three guys were interviewed on ESPN this morning.  I am even more convinced these are STAND UP guys.  The scale was a Berkeley digital scale-high end.  The lure was a white jig.  They even interviewed one of the eyewitnesses from the shore.  He said nothing but good things about how the three guys handled the situation as well as another witness.  These guys are wells respected in the Lake DIxon area.  Like it or NOT!

I think it boils down to people not wanting a WR fish caught and something to trash these guys about. As far as not much information about this situation.  That is just not true.  It hit the national media the day it happened and has been growing ever since.

PS:  The scale was not a Zebco De-Liar!!!

Fact is this fish was bigger that Perry's!!!  No IF's and's or but's about it!  PERIOD!

PS:  There was a poll taken by ESPN , 57% believe it should be considered the new WR.

I actually tuned out of a few other threads just because I got tired of the needless bashing. My skin is as thick as anyones. What I don't like (as you and I have discussed on several different threads lately) is people bashing others, and making ridiculous assumptions.

Seems in the end they actually did it right, considering the hook placement. A few quick phots and weighing and release. (they actually should have released it immediately, but God I could imagine your reaction then) Since it was obtained illegally per Ca. regs, they didn't have much of a choice. I'd also be willing to bet that if you caught a potential WR fish that you'd be a little shakey as well.

You know, nothing changes if they took measurements and used the certified scale, except you guys couldn't whine about it... he still had to release it and it still wouldn't have counted.

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

It matters not to me one way or the other if it's a WR or not.  I have no doubt, even if that scale was off by 10% that that fish is a new WR. The problem is there are rules involved in the certification of a new WR and that fish doesn't qualify unfortunately. The last thing we need is the next WR to be as clouded in mystery as the current one.  And I don't advocate changing the rules just so that fish can cut the mustard.

As for the lure being a jig I find that interesting, I'd like to see that jig.  I've been bass fishing for 30+ years of my life and I can count the number of fish I've foul hooked on single hook lures, especially a jig, on a couple fingers.  Treble hook lures yes, but a jig?

fishing user avatarguest reply :

I apologize for misspeaking.  I did not mean that controversy keeps the forum alive as in not dead.  I meant alive as in "lively"  I should have been more accurate in my statement.

fishing user avatarbigdog reply :

They also said that Cali. had a ruling about foul hooked fish.It was illegal no matter weather it was intentional or not. That means that the I.F.G.A. could not certify it so there for it is not a WORLD RECORD FISH. Just a HUGE fish :'(

A healthy forum (such as Bass Resource) consists of a protracted series of pro and con contributions.

We have moderators who oversee the forum, just in case a given topic becomes overheated.

However, I've yet to see a moderator squelch an orderly topic just because he felt "enough was enough".

With all due respect, the above quote is not about "enough is enough", but only serves to fan the flames.

To be credible, any attempt to suppress a thread must come from someone with a neutral unbiased stance.

However, the quote above vehemently defends one side. I also noticed you live in California, hmmm ::)

RoLo, My original intent was not to "fan the flames"  but to stop all the dissing of these guys.  My intent WAS to suppress the thread of personal attacks against these guys, as these are stand up guys.  Yes, I am guilty of vehemently defending one side...the side of the three guys at Dixon!  GUILTY! Your honor!

As far as living in California, yes I do.  Ihave since 1997, originally from Indiana.  I am a natural born Hoosier. Frankly, I would rather the WR came from Indiana, but I don't really care where it comes from.  I also noticed you live in Florida, hmmmmm :))
