Is This True? 2024

fishing user avatarbasslover12345 reply :

I was just reading an article and found this info very interesting that the author of the article wrote:

So let me explain how it works; #1, you cast out the sponsored bait product (whatever bait or baits the show is sponsored by, keeping in mind that the fish were actually caught prior to the show, and in most cases on totally different bait). #2, while you start your retrieve, you rare back with your rod like you just got a strike and pretend to set the hook! (on actually nothing at all). Then the camera will stop filming. #3, then, you simply reel your sponsored bait back in to the boat, grab a fish (in the case of a bass show, a bass) out of the livewell and place the hook of the “sponsored product” in the fish’s mouth. #4, Next you place the fish back into the water (with ease, and always keeping the slack out of your line), then you let the fish swim away from the boat. #5, then at this time, the camera starts rolling again and starts filming you fighting the fish back to the boat!...(Really quite simple!)

Is this true with shows like The bass pros, Bill Dance's and Roland Martin's show? What do you guys think?

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

LOL, what do you think?

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

I don't think so now ike talks in his book bout how photos are staged but I doubt the actual show is I mean anythings possiable I guess but like I said in a simular thread. Explain fake catching sharks and marlin on tv

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Seems like more work to fake it, LMAO. Just go catch a fish!

fishing user avatarBdugg reply :

editing is a huge part of all outdoors type of shows. they fish for about 8 or 10 hours and only show 6 or 8 hook ups. Also I believe that some (bill D) fish on private stocked ponds.

Here's a real fishing show: http://www.lunkerville.com/

fishing user avatarGlenn reply :

Oh bother - this stupid myth continues to circulate through the web. It's absolutely false! I've seen them shoot these shows, and trust me, nobody is manually hooking fish and putting them in the water. You gotta be pretty darn gullible to believe this lie!

fishing user avatarbasslover12345 reply :

I actually don't believe it, but my Grandpa does :)

fishing user avatarJames Yalem reply :

Roland Martin was caught years ago on LOZ doing that very thing.

fishing user avatartomustang reply :

It's a product showcase, of course it staged, how much? Not sure. Look at Bear Grylls, after every night filming he un-roughs it by sleeping in a hotel, how's that for not having water for days

fishing user avatarskunked_again reply :

the only thing you can say about Bill is: he has the best bloopers and he must have a "play with the fish at the boat" fetish.

fishing user avatarbosshogg reply :

This has been a well known common practice for many, many years, especially when they filmed shows in Florida during the winter months. I have had personal experience and knowledge of this happening in the past. Just shows what some "professionals" will do in response to $$$$$$$$. It is their livelyhood, and it's entertainment at best.

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

Anything is possible.Money talks and people will do anything to earn a buck or two.

I'm not saying I believe it.....But I wouldn't throw the theory out completely if a person is desperate enough.

fishing user avatarSENKOSAM reply :

Editing a show is not as bad as mentioning only sponsor products similar to Banjo Minnow and Roland's Helicopter Lure shows. At least Al Lindner and clan showed many lures by many companies and ways to fish them, regardless of the editing that always showed many lunkers on every outing.

Truth in advertising has never applied to fishing and probably never will whereas word-of-mouth and forums usually don't spread hype and underwater photography does paint a picture few can dispute. In that respect, I still have a bit of respect for the Bass Professor whose shows usually showed lures being worked and fish being caught underwater.

I doubt he gets picked up in the middle of no where and sleeps in a hotel each night. I will admit he does get assistance with things and he doesn't do it all "himself" he also has a camera guy following him who has to go through the same things he does. Regardless if he sleeps in a hotel or not and I doubt that he does, it doesn't change the fact that I am sure that guy can really survive in the wild by him self.

He puts some wierd stuff in his mouth. That trumps the hotel sleeping.

Do an internet search, you will find that he was indeed "caught" at a hotel while supposedly "surviving in the wild". The show then came forth with a statement that he does receive "assistance" and Bear's safety trumps all. He obviously has a cameraman with him at all times, which is more than likely a support team.

fishing user avatarripinthem reply :

I don't think this happens, but I do think they fish in places that are better managed/stocked, than I get to fish.

fishing user avatarbreezy reply :

I've heard things like this, fish being hooked by divers etc  I have no personal experience so I'm not sure if they go that far. Of course they are going to edit shows to highlight the biggest fish and sponsors. One pays the bills, and I'm sure the public is more entertained (and likely to buy their product) when an angler is catching 25lb limits. I doubt ALL fish are caught beforehand and they simply fake the fish, but it wouldn't surprise me. Especially fish being caught on other baits and edited or staged to showcase a product.

I would love to see some 'real' footage without too much editing and see pros being skunked or catching some dinks. Is the average person going to wanna watch a 30min show with no fish? Or buy the product that didn't produce anything? No. In the end it's a business and their goal is to make money...

Lunkerville is your answer.

fishing user avatarRandall reply :

If you don't see it from the cast all the way to the net/hand etc. uncut it probably never happend that way.

fishing user avatarQuillback reply :

If you want to watch pros having a tough time, watch Ultimate Match Fishing.

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

Watch city limits with ike he gets skunked a lot or falls short

fishing user avatarSouth FLA reply :

Who the heck cares if the fish was really caught with x brand lure and if the footage is 100% accurate? Its entertainment! To me shows are supposed to be entertaining not boring and real all the time, I like when Bill hooks a MONSTER in a PIT using whatever lure and you can hear the line TWANG, I don't like it when they are catching DINKS all day and the footage and sound looks like my teenage nephew filmed it with his go pro camera! By the way that show where Roland and Scott were slaying bass on the BIG O with Spro Aruka shads was real, I saw them filming it! I can tell you for sure though that they were not only throwing Aruka lipless, but others to get the school frenzied. If you watch the footage you'll notice that one rod has a diamond shad or rattle trap on it. Anyway, bass fishing is BIG business and from local sponsors to international sponsors it only sweetens the pot and makes fishing better for ALL of us as bass fisherman, so go ahead and SELL out it makes it better for ALL.

fishing user avatarNBR reply :

Years ago I heard Joe Foss talk. At that time Joe had a weekly fishing show. He said it took them 5 days to get enough film for a 30 minute show. I think that today it is much less but do you think anyone would watch a program that was not edited? How many times have you gone to the lake and fished a 30 minute period that would be worth watching. Fishing shows are to entertain and hopefully educate other fisher folks. If they don't do both they will cease to exist.

If you don't like what you see watch General Hospital.

DING, we have a winner. I could not have said it better myself.

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

Watch "A day on the Lake" and you will see how a pro breaks down a lake he doesn't know (or know well ) we are told. Sometimes they do well, other times not so much. I like watching and listening to them as they work to figure out the lake. That is the premise of the show. Most fishing shows though are about catching fish and selling product. That works for me; I like watching them catch fish, and I love fishing stuff. If it takes them a week or two to put together 30 minutes of great fishing, I'm OK with that. B)

fishing user avatarBlue Streak reply :

That all sounds pretty extreme to me, those guys are pretty good fisherman and they fish waters that are loaded with bass, big bass. That may be their "secret". There is always going to be someone taking shots at successful people.

Satchel Paige may have been the greatest baseball player ever and at one time he said.

"when theyse wackin at you arse, you knows you ahead"

I love it.

fishing user avatarCWB reply :

Doubt they stage catching the fish as the OP suggests, but Mr. Dance does fish from a private pond. I would bet on it. Every bass show he does looks like it is shot on the same long, narrow pond at different times of the year and with different baits. He does have a fetish for dragging a fish around at boatside waiting for it to jump. I don't like the way he holds the fish up near horizontally either. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but respect for him and what he has accomplished and given to the sport. Would be refreshing to see him fishing a public body of water and see another boat on that water once in a while. I rarely watch his show anymore. Lindner's Angling Edge is shot in my neck of the woods and always on public water. Even Roland fishes public water. I would love to have access to Bill's pond though. Some pigs in there for sure!

fishing user avatarsalmicropterus reply :

I have been the camera boat for five different shows over the years. I have never seen anything like that happen nor was there any temptation or thought between the pros or producers to do it. Some of these shows have seen some pretty tough fishing and in some cases it took three days of hard work to get enough footage for 22 minutes of content (that's a 30 minute show minus the commercials and intro and exit).
