Over-Fishing A Location? 2024

fishing user avatarSpinnerbaitSlinger reply :

Since about May till now, my main fishing spot has been a pond near my house that is about 2 acres in size. I've fished it maybe once or twice a week all summer. Broke off a four at the bank and a six pounder wrapped me around a submerged Christmas tree on a spinnerbait. Have caught a few smaller ones on rattle traps and one on a buzzbait. The main forage seems to be small baitfish, mainly bluegill. My trouble is the last two weeks or so they just wont bite anything. Is it possible that I have over-fished this pond and they have become accustom to my lures?

fishing user avatarFelix77 reply :

Doubt it ... they just moved elsewhere or maybe are deeper.  Also could be that they are in that "summer slump" which means they are lethargic and you need to hit them over the head with the bait before you will get bit.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Probably just the time of year. You have caught them shallow, but higher temperatures may have pushed them deep.

fishing user avatarSpinnerbaitSlinger reply :

Depth may be it then, because I haven't noticed them cutting the water as much. May try to throw some crankbaits and see if I can get a reaction. I'm not sure how deep the pond gets but it may be worth a try.

If it permits throw a 3/8oz Jig and find out what's down there by dragging it back to you.  Might help you figure things out a bit more.

fishing user avatarMccallister25 reply :

I def. agree with Felix about the 3/8 jig. I do that a lot actually.

fishing user avatarSpinnerbaitSlinger reply :

I have some 3/8 drop shot weights. would that presumably work just as well?

fishing user avatarBrian Needham reply :

another factor is, you don't know who else is fishing it......

case example, on the golf course I work at I used to go catch 2.5 -3 pound fish everytime out with the occasional +4#.....now I am lucky to catch short fish. could literally catch a best 5 of at least 11+ pounds, my best was 15 pounds with 3 fish in a hour.

the word got out and the lakes got beat up, and fish got put in a cooler....

fishing user avatarDcheek reply :

Agree with Brian Needham, most ponds especially ones out in the open are pounded on a regular basis.  My favorite ponds are also MANY others favorite ponds and I have noticed a considerable difference.  Also as others have mentioned, temperature plays a big role in small bodies of water and although the fish usually tolerate temp changes better in ponds they are still bass and act accordingly going deeper during the heat of the day.  The best I have received on this subject (from many on this board) try fishing at night.......worked for me.

How many adult size bass do you believe live in a 2 acre pond?

Yes the bass have become conditioned to seeing you and your lures!

Try night fishing with a buzz bait or T-rigged plastic worm.

Good luck.

Is it possible they have been able to acquire your name, address, and phone numbers.

fishing user avatarstratoliner92 reply :

Small ponds i have good luck with 4-6" worms t-rigged. Early or late in day small flukes also worth a try.

fishing user avatarHyrule Bass reply :

creature baits, t-rigged and weightless, pond fish love them.

fishing user avatarduckmaster55 reply :

Probably not,  if you go to it only once or twice a week. Usually if you catch a bass it wont bite for about a day or two. I guess it could be possible that the pond is starting to turn over and oxygen is all over changing the fishes appetite. Another thing that could be the reason they have stopped is the you have over fished only one group and they have smartened up. If you do believe you have over-fished it though, you could give them a break from fishing.

fishing user avatarMcFurie reply :

This why I rotate my pond spots regardless of productivity and I never fish and tell

fishing user avatarFrogFreak reply :

I was watching a video on this site and the biologist (can't remember his name) was saying that a Bass's memory is 15 minutes long. That got me wondering if bass can get conditioned to baits or presentations or if they simply have moved or turned off and we say they are used to seeing a bait when they really just aren't there anymore or just aren't turned on due to some other factor. In the pond scenario you described, I agree with some of the other guys here, I think they've moved or turned off and a slow presentation should work. I love a t-rigged worm or brush hog when I slow down.

LOL what you talking about most your spots half Jax knows about LOL Keep posting bout them on here too. Even the ponds in JCP aren't a secrect. My neighbor told me about them when we moved in. They were stocked too when they were built some 30 yrs ago.....Thing that keeps us catching is were are more learned about the sport and have put in more time and aquired more skill than most folks.

I'm saying I fish every single day and I never see people at the spots that I go, not to say they don't fish them. I share with you guys in the post in hopes to run into you lol.

But I mainly have my golf course, my spot from last year, ponte vedra, one I caught the big, and OPGC only when my boy can fish. I rarely run into fishermen at these spots unless they at with me.

fishing user avatarAK-Jax86 reply :

Another thing is when people say they caught a massive fish somewhere usually it doesn't yield results. But when it does like you said that's why we fish.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

I fish the same bodies of water over and over for many years now. Thru the many years I've learned to start off with topwater lures before first light.(pre dusk/dawn). At around when the sky starts to light up its called twilite I switch to deeper cranks in the 10' deep channel were I'm fishing. I have a rocky point on my left with a weedline to the right of this channel. I work the channel first. If no action is in the channel I go with the shallow running cranks in the submerged weedline. If no action by now the sun is starting to come up I switch to the Carolina rig. I call this place my twin lakes.

Now at my manmade dam place its a tad different. I try the topwater first but then go to spinnerbaits and inline spinners, then I go deep with plastics right away. I'm trying to catch them as there headed to deeper water that's near the flats/pads.

My point is to try a ritual of lures till the action happens then we're on the pattern.

To me throwing different lures and presentations is a challenge and fun.

I do find as it gets lighter and hotter the bass go deeper probably looking for the right ph and thermocline and a place to hide we're they can breathe better.

I also learned what is the hottest bait this year may not be hot next year. In fishing

the same places the bass do learn our baits and scents too. One day it was slow using my usual bass scent. When I changed from my usual bass scent to a garlic scent I caught

fish again. It pays off to try one little thing that's different.

I really enjoy throwing every lure out there.

That is true, I rarely see another angler out while I am angling but I fish mon-fri 5-8 am....I see people fishing those spots all the time from 10 am to 6 or 7 pm. When I am coming home from work or out with the family on the weekends. People tend to fish these spots more than you think. And there are a ton of trolls that roll through here just to get a loc or send u with a pm about spots. That spot with the pads you fish I had about that for a while and I found out from a guy here at work that told all his fishing buddies at the water cooler. Just saying they are more pressured than you realize, I used to think the same.

I noticed the pond you are talking about has seen more action because first I use to see snakes basically every time I was there and haven't I a long time. An there has been fishing line and trash down by the water, I always clean up. So I figured people have been fishin there that's why I haven't been the consistently in a while. Even ha someone pull in there once saw I was there and left

I never thought about that, but come to think of it I have noticed more and trash and things out of place at this particular pond.  Very unfortunate. There are some big fish in this pond, and if they don't care for the land then they will not likely care for the fish.
