I never knew I was that bad...... 2024

fishing user avatarBassguytom reply :

We finally had a cold snap here in the northeast and I have not been out on the boat in a week. I was teased all winter with the above average temps. and I took full advantage of it. I have had one of the best winters I've ever had. I guess what I'm saying guys is I miss it I think I have some reel issues with this whole bass fishing thing. I might be addicted and am thinking about checking into a rehab. Last night my wife had me walk into what she called an intervention. Some of my old friends were there telling me crap like "you used to like playing basketball with us and now we never see you. They all said they were all worried about me. I got really defensive and started organizing my plastics. It got so bad that they brought in my mom and she was all like Tommy you always were bright and happy with lots of interests and now all you do is sharpen hooks organize all your little plastic things and such. I had to grab a rod just to feel safe. I mean here I was thinking I was fine but not seeing what I was becoming! Anyway it ended and everyone told me how much they loved me and would do anything to help me. That night I got to thinking that I might have some reel problems. I just can't stop looking for that one big hit from a 6 pounder. I can't stop chasing it or thinking  about it. I've decided to make some reel changes in my life. I'm getting a new bass boat. Thanks for listening only guys like you who have lived it really can understand.

fishing user avatarRick Howard reply :

Hahahahah nice.

fishing user avatarSnakehead Whisperer reply :

I'm part of a support group down here for that.

We meet 6am at the boat ramp, if you're interested. ;)

fishing user avatardavecon reply :

The real question is, are any of those friends and family members great fishermen ?

If they aren't, just smile and nod, then go fishing. What do  they really know anyway.

If any of them are great fishermen (and I highly doubt that or they would not have participated in such an assault on your noble and valiant quest) then just assume they are merely jealous.

Do not let them sway you from your honorable cause of making the waters safe for women and children to swim. Those bass must be tamed and taught proper manners. It's a dirty job but somebody's gotta do it !

Stay strong and carry on.

last night we were relaxing at a restaurant until I saw fresh catfish on the menu.   the shakes came over me and I got thrown out b/c i stormed in the kitchen and demanded to see the chef's rod/reel combo.

fishing user avatarEvan K reply :

That was a good one @Bassguytom :)

fishing user avatarsoflabasser reply :

I think we all have experienced similar events like you have experienced with family or friends!Down here most with boats prefer to fish in saltwater and not many fish freshwater.I have had many friends question me on why I turn down a invitation to fish on their boat in saltwater to go fishing for bass in freshwater from the bank. One of those friends got very angry with me one day and gave me a +30 minute speech on how I am wasting my time fishing for bass when I should be on his boat fishing in the ocean. They just don't understand how fun it is to fish for those little green fish called bass!

Fishing is an activity that becomes who we are.

I ripped the cartilage holding my ribs in place on the right side in mid-August.  Casting hurt and handling my bass boat was almost impossible.  Carrying or dragging the jon boat was completely out of the cards.  Then, just as I was almost healed and was able to fish a bit, I re-injured them worse in early November.  Ribs were getting hung on each other and I had a spot on the right side of my abdomen that was sticking out.  Even light casting hurt.  It seemed that my right rib cage was moving.  If I laid on my back, it would move slightly forward.  If, on my stomach it moved slightly backward.  Every movement was painful.  I've injured my ribs a few times in my life and the older I get, the easier it seems to tear the cartilage loose.  Two different doctors told me that everything was in place but that I had extreme swelling.  I had to relax and let the cartilage heal. I am just now feeling like I could fish.  I plan to try working out again next week, but I am going to be very  careful.

So . . . . here it is mid-January, and I have only been able to fish three times since mid-August.  I have the shakes, depression, and I am irritable.  I wake up at night in cold sweats and can't get back to sleep.  Seriously, though, the last five months have not been good.  Fishing keeps me sane.  I can't wait to get back on the water.

fishing user avatarWPCfishing reply :

You could always tell them to sit down, shutup and hold this spool while you rethread your reel. Just a thought?

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

If you haven't done so already, try going on a few fishing trips to those special places where one catches the kind of bass that dreams are made of.  That will leave you wanting more & more, more & more, more & more, more & more, more & more, more & more, more & more, more & more.

My reels are all cleaned up and ready to go.  I am in the process of sharpening hooks on the baits now.  I will probably have that finished by the end of next week.  It should be starting to get warm enough to fish around the end of Feb, or early March.

I don't know what I am going to do for four more weeks.

No joke, I laughed for about 5 minutes.  Literally tears were coming out.  Hilarious.

fishing user avatarJake the Cake reply :

I couldn't handle it either so I called up the pops and said "grab your boat we're going fishing on the power plant lake!"  Then I immediately ran to the store and bought Yum Bad Mammas in Junebug color, 2 new jigs for the Bad Mammas, a BX Waking Minnow, a BX Minnow, 3 spools of line, and a Gander Mountain Vortex because they were on sale.

What's that about self help groups?

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

If you are going to make some "reel changes", I hear Shimano's are good.

fishing user avatarRobeng reply :

I say NO-NO-NO.....

Good writing and I'm right there with ya.

fishing user avatartander reply :

Most of us are really "ate up with it". we have reel problems that we don't want solved.

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

You don't need that kind of negativity in your life. Forget 'em.

fishing user avatarFrogFreak reply :

I have a local networking group that happens to meet in a local sports store (they have a nice meeting room) and as I walked out, I saw rods for sale and bought one. Outside it was snowing and it was about 10 below zero and here I am walking to my truck with a brand new 7 ft MH/F BC rod. Oh, and the gal at the checkout asked where in the world I was going to fish with the rod I just bought. I just looked at her and said Minnesota.... duh.

Try living up here in Walleye country and trying to explain to everyone that you don't fish for Walleye, you prefer bass. They usually look at me like I'm an idiot.

Also sounds like a lot of us guys.

Keep on trucking! :D

Some of us started a group, we meet every Monday and Thursday.!
We come together and help organize each others tackle and touch each other's rods.!
We're a brotherhood, who love you and your rubbers.!
It really helps our anxiety and urges.!
Unlike your family we understand you.!

Maybe one day we'll be accepted.

There is, to be sure, a fine line between sanity and insanity.

I have found that the best way to avoid unhealthy habits is to keep your tackle organized. I'm personally skeptical of anyone who is not organized and who does not have a plan. People who give no thought as to where the fish might be on any given day and/or put what ever bait on their hook are simply living on the jagged edge.

And don't ya just love it when one of "those" unorganized people catch all the fish and you're still waiting for that first "planned" bite?

Sometimes chance works and plans don't!

I think John Lennon once said something like "Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans."

Still ticked off at him for what he did to Elvis!
