Guys Please Be Careful In The Sun! 2024

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

So I went bank fishing Monday all day and flats fishing with. Buddy yesterday. Wore my uv long sleeves a hat glasses and my buff. Monday I noticed numbness in my hands very mild, and a burning in my index fingers. Then yesterday a horrible burning sensation but nothing obvious appeared. We got back to the boat ramp and I was scorched, I never burn bad im dark completed and grew up in florida. Either way wound up in the emergency room last night for my hands burning so bad I could not sleep or sit still. Found out due to a antibiotic im on its photosensitive and I should not have been in the sun at all. My dr or pharmacist never said anything. I probably should have looked the meds up myself but didn't. Got burn cream and a steroid shot. Good thing I'm off work all week just kinda blew my vacation lol. Moral is guys please please be careful in the sun especially if your on any meds I learned a big lesson yesterday

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

Same thing happened to my wife on antibiotics , only she was burned on her shoulders and legs. She couldnt even sleep at night because her skin was "crawling" .

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Yes exactly! I'm sorry to hear that happened to her also. It's insane

fishing user avatarCrank Bait Nut reply :

Hey JoeDodge

Hope Your Feeling Better ,

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

Good heads-up here. I had a fellow club member that couldn't fish for a while due to aggressive antibiotic treatment for Lyme disease. He had to wear an apparatus similar to an insulin pump only for antibiotics.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

I know the trend is wearing SPF clothing and that is good! However you should also use SPF sunscreen on exposed skin like ears, nose and hands and not be totally reliant on cloth.

I use a water proof product called Vertra SPF 45 cream on those specific skin areas because they are sites where cancer tends to occure.

You get a limited number of sun burns before your skin is damaged, everyone has a different number and I used mine up a long time ago!

Sunburns can be painful, sorry you had this experience and thank you for sharing.

Tom

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Thanks everyone! I just want everyone to learn from my mistake. Id hate for anyone to have to deal with this. Check any meds dr puts Ya on! I was wearing spf30 like I always do. The ER dr was suprised my dr even put me on it as a lot of times they won't prescribe doxacycline in the summer because of this.

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

The sun can do bad things to you these days. You must be protected at all times. Besides a coating of Neutrogena's "UltraSheer" SPF 70 lotion on my face and neck, I wear adequate sun protection at all times:

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

That happened to me about 8 years ago while I was taking some meds. I never had anything sting so bad in my life.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

I may look into sun gloves now. Even tho it was medication that caused most of this. I mean I have long sleeve uv shirts, a uv buff a hat and always wear spf30 minimum but i will be stepping up to 70 and sun gloves I don't care how I look just wan be safe. And want you guys to be also and learn from my lesson lol

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

Ouch! Now I now know why you can barely see guys like Rick Clunn and Aaron Martens......

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Seriously cover up good man! Your a young man. I'm only 26 and the Florida sun is brutal im trying hard to stay covered up as much as possible and pay more attention to any meds a dr prescribes me

fishing user avatarMccallister25 reply :

Hope your feeling better!

fishing user avatarFishing Cowgirl reply :

I cover up completely. The sun gloves are great, you hardly notice you are wearing them. I actually feel a bit cooler without the sun touching my skin.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

What is this "sun" you speak of?

Seriously, as I get older I think back on how recklessly unprotected my skin was.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Man growing up in FL and being dark completed I've always been enough kinda lax on the sun protection. But I do hate burning. This is the worst it's ever been. Gloves are getting looked at locally then ***! Especially since the times I can fish is usually mid afternoon only a couple weekend days a month can i morning fish. I don't care how silly I look fishing the banks lol all covered up!

fishing user avatarBassinLou reply :

Sorry to hear that Joe. Sun gloves will help complete your sun protection that's for sure.

I was on some antibiotic for shingles and my Dr. never said anything. I recklessly got a total body burn in the summer and once that "tingly" burning sensation hit me it was un...freakin...real... Felt like severe sunburn + pins and needles on top of it. I had never felt so out of my mind in my life, almost like a psychotic animal. I was in such pain over my complete body I was pacing back in forth pretty much screaming. I tired to scratch but it didn't help I tried to take an ice cold shower didn't help... lotions made it worse. Literally felt insane. Wanted nothing but relief. It calmed down after about 30 minutes and was still bad but not maddeningly bad. Crazy stuff...

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Wow man I was in the same fight or flight mode on my hands! I can't imagine a full body burn! Unreal, I can't stand sun burns and im pretty good at preventing them and usually a burn just tans quickly. Hopefully we are all a lil more careful now

fishing user avatarBruce424 reply :

Man hope your feeling alrigh. Yea the sun is nothin to mess around with

fishing user avatarAQUA VELVA reply :

I look like a fishing mummy out on my lake but I don't care. I have had so many bad sun burns as a kid , I don't think I have a safety margin anymore. I can remember when people thought a good tan was cool and all it was , was your skin trying to protect itself. Whodathunkit?

fishing user avatarBassnChris reply :

Thanks! I appreciate the reminder.

I was gonna hit the lake this weekend and didn't even think about the anitbiotics thing.

I'm currently taking them after a dental procedure last week.

Guess I might just stay home this weekend.

fishing user avatarJoedodge reply :

Yeah man look that stuff up and be careful!

fishing user avatartholmes reply :

Timely reminder, Joedodge. Here's hoping for a quick recovery!

Sun protection is something we all should take VERY seriously!

In my younger years, I didn't give it much thought, but now I've paid the price. I've had three skin cancers removed in the past two years. Now, I slather on the SPF 70 sunblock and wear a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses and long sleeves whenever I'm outside.

This is something you can't afford to neglect.

Tom

fishing user avatarjbw252 reply :

Great public safety endorsement there, Joedodge. Hope you're on the mend. Remember to catch fish, not cancer. Whether you are on meds or not, protect yourself from sun exposure. Especially while you are still young. Many people here have had run ins with skin cancers. Don't be foolish.

fishing user avatargrampa1114 reply :

Sorry that you had to find out the hard way Joedodge and I hope you feel better soon. Don't forget that it takes some time for those effects to wear off after you stop taking the meds.

fishing user avatarRanndomUndead reply :

Or just research the natural cure instead of complying with pharma crud that has 100 ill effects and a side effect of possible help.

Any natural illness has a natural cure, remember that

fishing user avatarPatrick Morrow reply :

Yeah, danger of sun burn on lakes or sea is much more dangerous than usual. You just have nowhere to hide. Of course, experienced anglers are familiar with it, but I can only imagine that guys who just start fishing might not even think about protecting themselves properly! And of course, bring enough water!

fishing user avatarGrizzn N Bassin reply :

Hope you feel better man. Not going to lie the past few years, I've been trying to get better about protecting myself from the sun but I don't to good of job.  Last year wasn't so bad because I night fished a lot. The days I did fish in the day time or am I didn't wear much of protection.

Thanks for making me aware again that I  need to do it this year!

Had a very similar experience after I had surgery for my broken leg. The Dr. had me on strong IV antibiotics post surgery at the hospital and sent me home with several weeks worth of oral antibiotics. My first trip out for 45 minutes resulted in a bad burn. It is important to know the side effects of medications that your on...I learned the hard way too!

Hope that burn heals up soon.

fishing user avatarCalgofo reply :

While probably the most common, it's not just antibiotics that can cause this. Other drugs can make you more sensitive as well. Also, it warrants mentioning to check your expiration date on your sunblock. Went out a couple of weeks ago and, normally, I apply sun block prior to arriving at the lake. For some reason, this last time I forgot (senility perhaps). I always carry a spare bottle of It in my boat bag as a back up. So, I slather that on and off I go. About mid day I thought I felt like I was getting burned but I thought there wasn't any way since I'd applied my back up bottle. Well, by the time I got back to the truck, I realized I was cooked. When I go home, there was no doubt I was fried. One flaw in my calculus. The bottle of sun block I had kept in my bag as a back up had EXPIRED 6 YEARS AGO. The moral of that story is not only use your sun block but, occasionally you might want to take a gander at that expiration date as well.
