Fronts 2024

fishing user avatarKevin Guidry reply :

I am a fairly new Bass fisher and I am having some success. I am in South Louisiana. I have good gear (Shimano reels and Rods) all the basic lures. I am having a rough time with all the fronts comming through one day 30 bites next day front comes through and not a bite.

I have read some articles and not shure why I canot get one bite, I understand that this is a slow time but I meen I cant get one bite. I have tried down sizing to small jigs and worms worked slowly around cover no success.

I will give you an example Tuesday 10 fish in the boat(overcast pre front) used a 6inch u-tale Zoom junebug worm texas riged. Wed a front rolled through and I went out Thursday tried same rig and nothing tried a bitsy jig black and blue in stained water !nada! tried 4 inch tiki worm fished wacky very slow arounds docks and brush.

Really would like to at least get a couple of bites to know if they are still there are moved. I did not try deeper water but the water temp was not a whole lot cooler in just a day or two????????????

Not sure if I am going in the right direction on should grin and bear it or I have it all wrong and need help.

Hello , once again and

You wouldnt have any relatives named Ron as in #49, would you?

fishing user avatarKevin Guidry reply :

We are related but like 6th or 7th cousin we live about 6 miles apart.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Even though he was a Yankee one of the best sliders I ever saw, maybe second to Gibson's

fishing user avatarBUCKEYEone reply :

definitely been there, I cant tell you what causes it, I can tell you it is one time out of the many it will happen when you take up bass fishing!  Its always a puzzle

fishing user avatarKevin Guidry reply :

Louisiana Lightning was every young boys Hero when I was a kid a long time ago, not many Kids know of Ron anymore.

I am leaving in three weeks going to Lake fork for a week and I am bound to run into the conditions I have discribed I would like to have a better game plan if that is possible.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Welcome aboard!!

fishing user avatarjrhennecke reply :

Welcome.  It sounds like you are doing the right things.  It just could have been one of those days.

fishing user avatarfishizzle reply :

Its called fishin not catchin

Sounds like you read the book

The problem is Bass can't read

You're doing things right--downsizing and slowing down

the bass are there just looking at your lure.

try doing the same thing in different areas points, dropoffs, differnt colors and try deadsticking for a minute with your worm or jig.

i.e. don't move your lure a bit

then recast

good luck

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Kevin what part of Louisiana you fishing?

I can tell one thing for sure if it's blue bird skies the fish will be tight to cover; take brush since you mentioned it, you will have to flip right against the base which means dropping your bait down through the branches.

fishing user avatarKevin Guidry reply :

I fish the Acadiana area.

Henderson Swamp

Lake Martin

Spannish Lake

Atchafalaya River area

I also have fished Toledo Bend this year and Lake Fork.

It is like drugs I cant think of anything else but the next fix.

I have even been dreaming of fishing and reeling in the big one.

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

Kevin,

Are these tough days you are describing always sunny bluebird days? Curious.

Paul

fishing user avatarKevin Guidry reply :

Yes Blue Bird Days Lots of sunn usually cooler days and a little windy.

These are the choices I have in the area I fish.

#1 Shallow Banks w/Brush

#2 Shallow Banks w/Docks and Grass

#3 hallow Grass beds no shade in this area middle of lake

#4 Deeper points on Main Lake Brush piles in 10 ft.

#5 Shallow Points away from Main Lake

#6 Humps on Main Lake.

I Have been thinking maybe I should go as deep as possible working the Brush Piles on the Main Lake / Less sun I'm not sure how this works but I think the deeper area would have a more stable temp or a slower change than shallow Maybe Caralina Rig?????? Have read about Carilina riging but have never fished it.

What about drop shot is it possible in these shallow lakes???

fishing user avatargarry77 reply :

I don't think the dropshot is limited to deep water.

As for your choices you described I would fish the docks and the brush.Throw back under the docks and overhanging trees as far and as tight to it as you can get.And fish it very slow.

Also seeing that you mentioned Louisianna and a swamp I'm gonna assume you have some cypress trees.Throw up tight against the portion that's out of the water and peel off some line so it falls parallel to the trunk. This way it settles down in the root bundle whee they like to hide. The lures you've been using should work well in these scenarios.

fishing user avatarJoel W reply :

Drop shotting works in shallow water as well as it does in deep water. I've dropped shot in water as shallow as 3-4 ft. If the fish are there, they'll take your lure. The really nice thing about drop shotting when the fish are suspended is that you can keep the lure in their faces for a long time. Sooner or later one will get "ticked off" enough to take your lure.

As for post frontal conditions, I prefer to move out to deeper water, say 12-15 ft. The temps are more stable and the fish seem to be some what more active.

fishing user avatarKevin Guidry reply :

Thanks for all the reply's

Anyone have any advice for a Carilina rig in 5 - 10 ft of water

fishing user avatarHesterIsGod reply :

welcome!

fishing user avatarba7ss3in reply :

I have used smaller weights, almost like finess c-rigging. Make sure the weight make it to the bottom. 1/2 oz and smaller tung. weights. 6 inch zoom french fry or finess worm. I forgot to add, 8 to 10lb test line and 12 to 18 inches on the leader.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

The problem with passing frontal conditions is the big change in sunlight, wind and temperature change. The low pressure brings in the weather front with clouds creating low light conditions and that turns on the bass, folloed by high pressure that clears out the clouds with wind and bright sunlight that turns off the bass.

Shallow water bass are affected by both conditions more than deeper water bass, due to the reduces light pentration into deeper water and the wind affects the deep water less.

Take advantage of the appeoaching cloudy conditions and move out to deep water during the clear bright post frontal conditions. The other option is to fish the heavy cover and try to tease the bass into striking.

Good luck.

fishing user avatarBassChaser57 reply :

There are lots of different opinions on why spring cold fronts slow the bass fishing so drastically but on the other hand it is normally some of the best fishing days with an approaching cold front. If you watch the sky and see jet contrails it is a great time to have some of the best catching. There are lots of weather related reasons why this is true but I will not bore you with them here--just get out there when the contrails are in the sky and mow the lawn later.

If you are going to Lake Fork, PLEASE spend some money on a guide until you get it figured out. Lake Fork is my favorite and I spend time on it. I have caught several hogs there but I have been humbled to where I could not even catch a cold there.

My wife and I will be going back on the dark of the moon the 1st week of April and will be looking for a place on the lake. You know you have a great wife when she wants to move to Lake Fork!!!

Hmmm, Basschaser might even be a good Lake Fork Guide Name. 8-)

Most people who enjoy the outdoors realize wildlife and fish are on the move prior to a quick change in the weather. The animals and fish have a built in survival mode realizing a meal may be difficult to get tomorrow. For deer, elk, turkeys, ect, they somehow know they need extra food to get thru the bad weather coming. Bass are the same as the food chain grinds to a halt with a passing spring cold front (these reasons can be debated later). My wife even knows when there is an approaching front as after her leg surgery her leg throbs. She is also a great indicator of an approaching cold front and when to go fishing.

The simple explanation for the jet contrails indicating an approaching cold front is that the high level winds may be moving at over 100mph. This causes whatever is to the west/northwest (exceptions on the east, and gulf coast) to show up in the upper atmosphere first. What this means is if there is a spring cold front approaching there normally will be moisture associated with the front. This high altitude moisture will be blown ahead of the front 24 to as much as 48 hrs depending of course on the speed of the front. With this high level moisture (even unseen) when a jet flys thru the frozen ice particles they get heated and turn into a visible vapor. Again, all the contrails indicate is high level moisture, and high level moisture is normally only in the upper atmosphere in the U.S. in a prefrontal condition. As the front gets closer you will normally see cirrus clouds which look like whispy "horse tails." As the front gets close you should expect to see thunderheads on the horizon. If we agree fish are more active in prefrontal conditions in the spring, contrails means it is time to fish. This is more accurate than the Channel 12 weatherman.

I talked to the owner of Lake Fork Taxidermy about weather and catching fish. He said when the anglers would bring a photo of the trophy to get the proper coloration, they would most always be wearing their rain gear in the photo. Maybe not raining but they had it on. Interesting.

On Tom Reddington's photo of the 10+ lb bass in Feb he said he got hailed on. It had been in the upper 60's, as fast and violent cold front approached, he got his 10lbr. Tornados everywhere and an ice storm followed. What a day.

When there are jet contrails in the sky I am either making them or in my boat watching them.

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

Interesting BassChaser. Thanks for the details. I'd heard of cirrus clouds coming ahead of fronts but never really knew what they were about. Thanks.

fishing user avatarKevin Guidry reply :

I can tell by my wife to when its time to go fishing, When she starts being a pain in I disagree. Time to go fishing. I can listen to it now or go fishing and listen to it later.

Guys thanks for all this great discussion it gives me a lot of things to try and with all these fronts I will get plenty of practice.

I did get some of these guys to bite yesterday on a white tube jig so I post front day with out a big 0 on the day.

Thanks

Kevin

fishing user avatarQuinn reply :

WOW ! one thread that addressed a few  questions for me.

I will pay much more attention to the fronts that are constantly moving through mid MO.

My wife injured her knee a while back and when the weather changes, her knee hurts. And I have an ankle I sprained really bad that acts up.

Can't see the jet trails 'cause I don't think many fly over where I'm at.

I won't let her know this though, I'm afraid if she knew that she was an indicator, she wouldn't let me know her knee hurt  ;)

Wives, geezzzz that could be an entire new thread if not a board  ;D ;D

My wife don't have any problem with me fishing, but she thinks I have a mental problem this winter because my work is slow now and if I'm not fishing I'm thinking about it or sitting hear learning more about it.

Kudos to you who have wives that will go with and sorry for those of us who have had injured wives. :)
