Yum & Gulp vs. Zoom 2024

fishing user avatarBass_n_Bucks reply :

I was wondering if anybody swears by the scent disbursment that Yum & Berkley Gulp have and thier claims that it catches more fish.  I usually use Zoom soft plastics just because they are generally cheaper.  But I can't help to wonder if Yum or Gulp would work better.  I plan on trying Yum and Gulp heads up with Zoom, but I wanted to hear other folk's thoughts on weather or not you think the scents work better.  Thanks.

fishing user avatarflippinmaster reply :

Well there all good brand. Personally i use all three. But i dont buy gulp anymore cause you cant use the gulp and then try to  use it again another day because it hardens up like a rock. So yea yum is probably the best in my opinoun

fishing user avatarNeedemp reply :

Yum baits scent has not been as effective for me as Powerbait and Gulp. Berkley puts a lot of research into thier baits. I have definitely noticed that fish hold on to them longer. That doesn't mean they will get you more bites. It just means they will hold on to it. I have noticed that time and time again, especially compared to Zoom and Yum.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

The best most scented bait you can find won 't catch fish if you don 't fish it in the right place with the right presentation.

I 've used them all and to tell you the truth I can 't see any difference aside from the action I can get out of the bait depending upon the style, size and shape of the bait.

fishing user avatarTournyFish001 reply :

i use them all except Chompers- that crapola is just cruel and unusual punishment!!! nasty stuff anything it is around will smell like it for a very long time very unpleasant stuff-

fishing user avatarShad_Master reply :

Bass-n-Bucks, you got to learn to write it correctly - it is GULP!  ;)  and it is my goto bait when things are tough.  It ain't cheap and it will dry out, but if you soak it in water it will come back.  Another problem (?) with GULP! is that it will catch everything that swims.  So I use it for a search bait and then switch to ZOOM or someother plastic to do my hard fishing and then when things quiet down, I throw another GULP! for good measure to see if they are still biting - if they are they will bite at GULP!

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

* GULP * = garbage. Have you used it? As soon as you take it out of the water and switch to another rig for whatever reason, it gets HARD and stiff within minutes! (Wish I did!) I just don't like the stuff. If you use it on a drop shot, it looks like a stick in the mud. No action at all. I think they figure the smell alone will catch fish - NOT! Way overratted IMO. Give me powerbait anyday.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Powerbait is very good.

With the new Gulp! tubs you can now save your bait for another day.

I put Mega Strike on my plastics and hard baits.  Fish seem to like it.

Read what Dr. Keith Jones has to say about attracants in his book and you may change your mind about scents.

I have Dr. Jones' secret formula for plastics and will be using it on the Pamunkey River next month.

Yummy!!!!!

fishing user avatarSam reply :

P.S.  For all you Gulp! users.

Put your Gulp! worm in a wet wash cloth or paper hand towel to keep it supple while fishing.

Of course, at the end of the day you will have to throw it back into the water for the turtles and catfish.

fishing user avatarShad_Master reply :

Well, the debate rages on - love it or hate it, this stuff catches fish.  Just watched a rerun of the BassMaster Tourney on Lake Erie this morning - Greg Hackney was singing the praises of GULP! and even noted that it wasn't one of his sponsors, "but it's the only thing I can get 'em to bite on".  You must be using the Sinking Minnow for your drop shot and you are right, they don't have as much action as a Senko - but try the night crawlers for drop shottin - they work great.

P.S., if I keep this up, I may have to contact Berkley about some kind of sponsorship :;)

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

I've been using Power baits since they came out. Needemp is correct; they won't get any more bites, but they also will not spit it out. A biting fish is a caught fish with Power Bait.

Can't say the same about Yum.

And I don't like gulp, because it seems to me that none of the gulp baits has any action.

I've also been using Zoom baits forever. It's hard to beat their tubes, and the Super Flukes are one of the all time great baits. I add scent to all the Zoom baits.

Cheers,

GK

fishing user avatardman reply :

I took my daughter out for panfish and brought along the GULP! earthworms.  Figured we wouldnt hafta kill any worms in front of her,  Anyway we caught nuthin at all.   I dug out a few worms and was able to salvage the trip with a couple nice perch and bluegill.  So,  it certainly didnt "outfish live bait"....Another thing,  i gave it another try with the catfish chunks.  I got the liverBlood chunks.....Never got a bite and should have known because when i opened the wrapper it smelled EXACTLY like the little jar of earthworm thingys.  Seems like they didnt change the formula at all, just the packagingmarketing,  made me mad.

fishing user avatarThe Next KVD reply :

I swear by Gulp!.  Whenever I finesse fish I use Gulp!.  When the fish are actively biting I switch to the cheaper Powerbait which can take more abuse than Gulp!.  However, when i need to finish out a limit than Gulp! will get you the bites that you need.  I believe that the fish can smell it from father distances than the regular Powerbait, Zoom, and Yum.

fishing user avatarBassFishingMachine reply :

I personally don't like this stuff. I feel it is overpriced and not worth the money they charge for it. The only thing they make that works decently for me is their nightcrawler but it aint no GYCB Kut-tail, that works alot better for me, and there both similiar prices. I just feel all of the baits they make there is a better counter part of it. For example, there senko knock off, doesn't compete with YUM's or the original GYCB. I just never really liked them, action of the bait is what gets the hit in my opinion, the scent is what takes effect after the hit, and Gulp, doesn't have as good of action as the rest of the softbait companys, so what good is scent without action. Again this is all just my opinion, what can I say.. Ive spent some money on these baits thinking they'd be better if I bought a different type or a different bag, and it was always the same crap. (Although for saltwater my opinion completely changes on this stuff, it does work amazing in saltwater, I will give it that, but they should keep it out of freshwater.)

fishing user avatarGhetto_Basser reply :

I fished a lot of Redfish Tx's while I was living in Florida. My partner swears by it and a lot of the

other people we fished against used it religiously. I tink it is way overrated, granted you may catch some fish but they were generally small in my experience. The freshwater product is garbage.

Like everyone has mentioned it drys up way to fast and the bait has a terrible texture. IMO

I caught some fish nite fishing one time with rattles in the tail but I caught more using a senko

with a rattle. The rattle was an experiment and I fished that way for a year to see if the Gulp was more productive. So IMO Gulp is a waste of money.

fishing user avatarjwo1124 reply :

I forget who said this, but they put it best. GULP! is a scent bait with a little action, not an action bait with a little scent. As long as anglers know this, they will know what they are getting into when using GULP! And as far as the baits drying up; take the 45 seconds to take it off the hook and put it back in the bag. I have heard great things about GULP!, I have caught a few rat bass on a sinking minnow, but I haven't really gave them a lot of time on the hook.

This isn't because I don;t have confidence in them, it is mainly due to the fact that I do not do alot of soft plastic fishing. For the anglers who have used these baits by them selves and had success, good. For those who have used it and had a bad experience: give them another try. Try them as jig trailers if nothing else. This gives you all the action of a jig, with the scent disspersement of the GULP!

Just a thought.

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

Yum is OK, but not great.  I do not catch more on Yum than I do on similar styled baits, scented or otherwise.

In my opinion Gulp is absolute trash, unless you are fishing for catfish or bream.  I sold all of my Gulp on Ebay, and good riddance.

You can add all other soft plastics up for me (including GYCB!), and they do not come close in numbers to the fish I have caught on Zoom soft plastics.  Zoom is the best in the business.  They have the best color selection and tons of different styles of baits, and they are readily available in every store from Walmart, to Gander MTN, to BPS.  If you broaden your search for zoom products online, you will see some crazy colors.  There are some Zoom colors on Ebay that are amazing - Pumpkin Spice, Raisin, Banana Seed, and other weird ones...

Recently however, I have discovered Gambler Lures, and have been pulling fish out of the ponds with Giggy Sticks and Big Sticks like crazy.  If this keeps up, they'll beat out Zoom, but for now, Zoom has the best baits out there.

fishing user avatarShadcranker reply :

I'm a Zoom guy. The baits are loaded with salt, are soft enough but don't tear up on one fish, and they have the best variety of sizes, shapes, and colors of any platics manufacturer out there.

The only plastic baits I don't buy of theirs are tubes, Senkos, toads, and grubs (their tubes aren't loaded with salt like others, and I really like the action of the Kalin grubs, and I've had more success on the Stanley Ribbit).

Their Lizards, Baby Brush Hogs, Ole Monster Worms, Super Hogs, Trick worms, finesse worms, Speed Craws, and Jig trailers are all great.

As far a scent goes, I spray the Bang Pure Craw on my plastics. It's easy to use b/c it's a spray, and I get the craw scent plus the salt on the plastics.

I've got some Yum stuff, but Zoom is the go-to plastic brand for me.

SC

P.S. On Gulp and Power Bait, the stuff turns my stomach, and smells up everything in site. It's a no-go for me.

fishing user avatarbassmaster8100 reply :

Ive tried all of those mentioned, Ive had my best luck by far with Zoom.

fishing user avatarBass_n_Bucks reply :

Thanks for the responses.  However, it seems everybody has an opinion on GULP!, but I haven't heard much about YUM.  Does anybody like YUM?  What about all the salt they put on the outside of the lures?  That has got to all come off as soon as it hits the water, right?  What about the YUM scents?  Does anybody use those?  I'm thinking of sticking with Zoom, but letting all my lures soak in scent.  Tell me what you think and if anybody has had in luck with this approach.  Thanks

fishing user avatarNeedemp reply :

Salt washes away. Plus, experiments at Pure Fishing revealed very little preference to salt unless it was prey salt. But salt does soften the plastic and help the hook move through it better. I have found no extra benefit from Yum scents. I use Yum Dingers and especially the Crawbugs (SHHHHH!) They do not hold on to them like Gulp! and Powerbait. Not even close. But they do work. Basically, it all comes down to you. Most lures work if in the right location and with the right presentation. Once the fish hits it, you have to set the hook the right way at the right time and you will catch fish. Use PB and Gulp! when you are new to fishing plastics, bass are hitting light or you're fishing in heavy wind. That gives you the extra edge. But once your comfortable with plastics and hook sets, you will catch fish on any product out there

fishing user avatarbass109 reply :

gulp, cant stand the smell

yum, never caught nothing on those

zoom, works

fishing user avatarJake. reply :

I like yum's jig trailers, but that's all I use from them.

I use GYCB senkos,

and everything else is zoom.  ;)

fishing user avatarBassFishingMachine reply :

I use alot of YUM, GYCB, Zoom and Berkley Powerbait with good results. But Gulp just isn't my kinda stuff.

fishing user avatarTriton9 reply :

i use all three but i have to say i catch more fish on zoom stuff than yum and gulp! combined, i really don't like the gulp!, it doesnt seem to catch as many as it sounds like it should, so zoom is my favorite, just because they always outfish my yum or gulp! stuff

fishing user avatarbitsandbass reply :

If I deadstick a YUM dinger or a Gulp nightcrawler under a bobber , which one will be more effective.  If there is no action on the rubber, I can only assume that scent will be the differentiating factor right?

Which of these plastics would be most effective for dead sticking?

This is just my opinion..  if you're going to use a bobber, then you should use live bait...the only way I see using a bobber with a senko style bait is floating it back under docks and such...otherwise  , just use live bait... Gulp does not outfish livebait... And there is no shame in using it if this is the route you choose to take... Nightcrawlers , shiners, creek chubs and crawdads all work great as bait for many types of fish !!

Don't care for the gulp... I have had success with the minnows on a dropshot but still not my favorite... Also know people who use them jigging while Ice fishing...

As for those yum dingers.. learn to use them Texas weightless and wacky. You'll catch alot more bass these ways then you will "dead sticking "

Ok thanks.  I keep ending up in the live bait camp.  I was hoping to not bother with buying or finding nightcrawlers.  I think Im going to try and catch some shiners with bread.  Even better, let the kids do it.  Will give them something to focus on.
