What Is The Best Prop Bait? 2025

fishing user avatarBassTravis reply :

I don't use prop baits very much outside of a torpedo.  Whats the best line to use with prop baits and which prop baits have produced the best for you guys?

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

I haven't tried an expensive one, but if I buy another, I will do just that.  I've bought H2O, Smithwick, Heddon; can't tune the props on any of 'em worth a darn.

fishing user avatarkickerfish1 reply :

Depps buzzjets are good baits that have produced good results for me.

fishing user avatarrobster80 reply :

h20 ones r pretty good ive got a couple. i like the shorter one better. the yozuri 3db prop is awesome! check those out.

fishing user avatarmackroper reply :

I have had good luck with the Heddon Torpedo, both large and small sizes. With some trial and error fine tuning of the prop they will work very well.

This is my favorite as well.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

My experience with propbaits is very limited, but my best success has been on a Smithwick Devils Horse.

Oddly enough, the first bass I ever caught on the surface fell for a Creek Chub Injured Minnow.

That was back in the 50s, shortly after they switched from wooden plugs to plastic plugs  :laughing7:

This is the exact same bait he said he already has.

Line wise I use braid on all my rods but some prop baits need a mono leader for its floatational qualities and rigidness to prevent prop fouling.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

The discontinued Bomber Prop A . I'm guessing the average weight of bass I caught on it surpasses all the other lures that I have used .

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

I think you already have the best one. I never caught one fish on a Devil's Horse. I caught dang near 50 in one afternoon on the Torpedo. And I had to tune the blade because the fish kept knocking it out of whack. I was fishing from a kayak that day and I got soaked from all the bass I caught. I haven't had many days like that.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I like the H2O Slush Minnow

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Cordell's Boy Howdy has produced pretty good for me over the years.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

I´ve caught thousands of fish with Heddon´s Torpedo.

This thread got me to thinking . One year I dedicated a part of the day , every day top water fishing . I used a lot of different baits .  I caught a lot of fish that year on  a Dalton Special. I dont think I have one anymore . I'm going to have to keep an eye out for one .

fishing user avatarsmalljaw67 reply :

If you would have asked me last Spring I would have said the discontinued Heddon Dying Flutter but now my new favorite is the Yo-Zuri 3DB Prop!! It has a single plastic prop on the back and when you rip it the sound is different than other prop baits, I've had big smallies come up and eat this bait when nothing else would work.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

Tourneys aside, if a recreational fisherman catches 2 or 3 fish on a topwater lure,

the natural tendency is to keep on throwing that same lure. That's fine-&-dandy,

but by sticking with the same lure, he's discarding a golden learning opportunity.

The next time you find yourself in a red-hot topwater blitz, instead of counting bass,

conduct an experiment. Every time you hook a bass, change to another topwater lure,

and repeat that process until you've thrown every topwater lure in your tackle box.

If your results are anything like mine, the importance of specific lure brands and lure colors

will be brutally downtrodden, and no lure will be left behind. Unfortunately, topwater blitzes

are few and far between, but I always treat them as a learning opportunity

Good find! They're great lures.
fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

I like the skitterprop and torpedos, especially the magnum and baby torpedos. I really like the cotton cordell crazy shad and the Live Target blueback herring for double prop baits.
