Submerged Grass? 2025

fishing user avatarWolfie reply :

Ok guys looking for a little help if you were going to fish submerged grass 17-12' deep growing to within 2-3 feet of the surface or 6' in 17' of water what line and lure would you use in semi clear water also what weight?

fishing user avatarMDBowHunter reply :

I have the same type of situation going on where I fish and I've been drop shotting the back edge of the grass and doing real well. I've mainly been fishing flat grassy points, but the back edge of the grass is where the better fishing has been. Oh yeah I've been using roboworms the last few weeks, but I used dream shots today and they were all over it.

Sweet thanks

You Can Through About Anything , With The Grass 2 to 3 Down , Small Crank Baits , Spinner Baits , Chatter Baits , Traps , Swim Baits , Jigs, Top Water Above The Grass "Killer" , Jerk Baits Along The Grass Line. I'd Go With 15lb Fluorocarbon.

My 2 Cents

Mike

I'm doing exactly that tomorrow morning In a lake that doesn't have a lot of quality shallow cover, but lots of cabbage 10'-20'; down, and about 10 feet of visibility.  Right now I have rigged ready to go:

-Texas rig: 9.5" green pumpkin Zoom Mag II worm on a 3/16 bullet weight; 50lb suffix braid, 12lb XT mono leader (probably don't need the leader). Might upsize or downsize the hook/worm on this depending on the bite, or switch to a craw.

-Drop shot: 4" pumkinseed berkley power worm with 1/8 weight 10lb XL mono

-Topwater(-ish) wildcard:. a white/silver Custom Lures Unlimited Zero Gravity Jig (color pattern is a rough crappie approximation). I'm going to experiment with it as a sort of a jerk/wake bait along the top early. I have this on a snap tied directly to 20lb power pro braid.

The line choices are not so much "choices" as they are just what I had on the rods already. I only use braid and mono and only spinning gear.

Thanks guys i guess im thinking more down in the weeds like jigs and t rigs

My grass fishing 101...............go over the top with a topwater bait, if they won't bite that, or slap and miss, rip a square billed crank or swim jig through it.....still no takers, but you know they are in the grass, next step is a slow falling wacky rigged bait, if that's hauling water............time to go straight to the bottom with any number of things. My # 1 choice would be a T-rigged plastic, or a jig. If none of that works..................go fish docks, or hard cover out side the grass, like an off shore rock pile, sunken boats, etc....

In our lakes around here, there are ALWAYS bass in the grass, but they can be some of the most finicky fish to get to bite, especially in clear water where the grass is easily seen and hammered by a legion of decent anglers. Not to mention they turn off or on at the drop of a hat, at almost seemingly random times. While there are more shallow water fisherman around here, fewer of them are any good, and it's a good way to get on some big fish when the grass bite is slow..........same with the deep water bite. Not to mention, shallow living  big bass seem to be more "angry" in general, and can be irritated into biting. But boy, when those hogs turn on in the grass, it's possible to put a sack and a half of them in the boat FAST, but timing is the key. I know guys who are 100% grass guys who will live and die with that bite, and never go outside or shallow. They are the guys who will zero or middle it for weeks on end, but they are also the guys who will smash 20lb bags for weeks on end when it's "right". I am not quick to bail on the grass, but I will....especially if I haven't had a bite in 4 hours and have fished the crap out of good areas, but it can bite you........several times I have given up on the grass to go shallow, or deeper, and it's cost me, because while I have been farting around elsewhere............they turned on.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

I'm in Farmer's court;  strike while the iron is hot.

Begin in shallow water near the surface, working down to the bottom then move into deeper water.

The sluggish bottom-huggers aren't going anywhere, they'll wait for you.

When the weedbeds won't give up a fish, it doesn't mean they're not there, it just means they're not feeding.

Alternative spots to look for active bass are docks, over shellbeds and at the mouths of feeder creeks.

I like using weightless senkos and fat ikas for submerged grass.

On the 2 lakes that I fish that are full of coontail moss I catch 98 % of my bass in the holes where the grass doesn't grow, along the grassline, or on top of the grass. seldom do I try to catch bass in the grass because it is very difficult to catch them this way. the coontail grows solid from the bottom to within a couple of feet of the surface. but when try this technique I use a 7'6" heavy act. flippin stick, 20 # mono, 1/2-3/4 oz. bullet weight, & a black or junebug 4" tube texas rigged. some of my friends use 65# braid. I used to use 20# fluorocarbon but noticed that the line would be frayed after a couple of hrs of fishing. I never use a jig fishing this way because I could never get the jig to come out clean it would snag the grass 95% of the time. when the grass grew to the surface or when the loose grass would form mats it was a lot easier to catch bass for some reason using the same technique.

fishing user avatarMIbassyaker reply :

if you don't mind, wolfie, I'll follow up on how my morning went, since I said I was going to a lake that seemed  a similar situation to what you're asking: The fishing overall was slow (this lake has been uncharacteristically slow all year), but it was saved by working the top few feet of the water column early, over the top of some light weeds in about 5-10' of water with the Zero Gravity Jig (not a traditional jig; it's very slow-sinking, so it fishes more like a weightless plastic; I jerked and swam it in short bursts to just under the surface, then paused to let it fall a few feet in between);  the bite was near the top to a couple feet down at dawn, and nothing deeper than that ever turned on before I had to leave. There are almost always fish that can be caught deep in the cabbage at this lake -- and that's where I've caught most of my larger fish out of this lake-- but they were not having any of it today!

So:  in my case, ww2farmer and RoLo had the right Idea, and I might have been skunked if I had gone right to the t-rig instead of starting near the top and shallower with something else.

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

RatLTrap. Reel it just fast enough to keep above the grass. It won't always work, but they'll be good fish when it does.

In the scenario you outlined, the fishable depth extends from the surface down to about 17 feet.

Bass may be positioned at any depth within this range, from the crown of the canopy to the naked stalks on the bottom.

Of course, we never know the disposition of the fish in advance, but their location can often shed some light.

Though far from definitive, the following 3 situations tend to favor active bass:

 >> Bass on weed points (outside turns), as distinguished from bass in weed pockets (inside turns)

 >> Bass in shallow water, as distinguished from bass in deep water

 >> Bass lofted high in the weedbed, as distinguished from bass hugging the bottom (the swimbait targets these fish)

Bass spend most their lives 'off' the feed, so culling the aggressive bass first stands to reason (strike while the iron is hot).

I prefer to work shallow to deep when I'm searching. In this situation that would translate to top to bottom. This allows me to presently offering to a larger number of active or neutral fish as opposed to working deep to shallow. The more active bass using submerge the weeds won't be buried in them, but on the edges. Inside outside and topside. Along with some of the other suggestions, I'd recommend a T-rig weightless worm. One with some salt in it. It will fall slowly down to the top of the weeds, but not penetrate them.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I like to use a small jig.  I work it through the grass just like I would if it were on the bottom.  I try and hop it.  Don't try to drag it because you'll pick up grass every time.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

Mepps Timber Doodle silver blade white grub. Work it slow and let it drop into the open weed pockets.

Grub on a weighted hook.

Shallow A bomber crank. Slow reel, stop and twitch it.

Mister Twister top prop. Slow reel the stop let it go vertical, sit and watch the blow up.

Spooks walk the dog slowly. 1-2-3 pause.

Yes.

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

I was tearing it up on Saturday ripping Big Rat-L-Traps and Xcalibur xr50's through the grass.  Throwing them past the grass and as soon as they hit the water, I reeled as fast as I could.  When I felt the grass, I just ripped it through.  It was actually pretty 'violent" fishing and it wore me out...not to mention I wound up embedding a treble in my middle finger.......but it was FUN!!!!

And yes...you have to clean the grass off after every cast...but if it's working.........

So, how would you work that? Like a weedless spoon? What kinda gear do you plan on fishing it on?

fishing user avatarDogmatic reply :

I have grass beds that run from 2'-12' deep, it's only a half ounce, so I'm thinking using a Boo rig to get some depth, but I'll throw it on my light cranking rod, or a spinning combo by itself.

fishing user avatarJT Bagwell reply :

My favorite bait for fishing grass is a Lucky Craft lipless crankbait.

Normally I throw the LV500Max.

fishing user avatarpapajoe222 reply :

One bait that gets overlooked frequently for targeting submerged weeds is a minnow style crank or jerk-bait. It can be twitched, stopped, worked like a crankbait, or ripped free of weeds like a lipless crank.  They saved me more than once when following behind other anglers. Most guys only think of them in early spring, or late fall.
