Hey Fella; Based on yet more combos being sold under the regular name, only to be a different combo when you get it, they lost me. I will stick with Cabelas from now on. I cancelled my account and selling off my last 3 BPS reels, as i will not even use their stuff. I will stick with Cabelas from now on. What a shame for a major company to keep doing this time after time, they lost my business, as little as it is :-/
Thats just crazy talk Talk to customer service they will put it right.
Cool down and then click the online sale that starts Thursday

Last year they sold the "Extreme" combo: Differnt Rod and the Older Reel: Picture in flyer: WooDavi Rod and Current reel
Fathers Day: Harrisburg Store; David Fritts Reel and Cranking Stick: Well it was a Cranking Sitck but it was not the Fritts Reel
This Crhistmas:: A bogus pro qualifer outfit
This is not crazy talk, thats just the last 3 examples of what they do, there are many more documented here, especially from one meber i trust and know for a while AND HE WORKED FOR THEM.
I lovwe their Pro Qualifer Reels and some other stuff, but they have shownm themselves , through years of me shopping form them and other's experiences to be Corporate Bait and Switch Bandits. So this is neither hash nor off the cuff . I am done
Best place I've found with great prices on most stuff and FREE shipping is:

Contact: Carrie Untch for items not listed on the site and she can probably get whatever you want at a great price. IMO:o)

Thanks Ill stick with Cabelas,Barlows they have the absolute best service for me.
Sorry to hear about the troubles muddy.
I ordered a combo from them earier this month. The rod came first, broken (not BPS's fault), without the packing slip and return shipping lable. Those were in the box with the reel that came three days later.
I got the return shipping address off of the BPS website FAQ section, Only to find out later when my reel came in, that the zip code on the return shipping lable was different from what was posted on there website.
So I spoke with a CSR that told me, "Oh that zip is for another department and thats whats holding your return up."
"Well I know that now!!!"
Im just going to wait a couple more days, then Im going to call back when I have a few HOURS to spare, and work my way up to someone who will do something about this. And then I'll never do business with them agian.
Hey Slomoe: I am not having any troubles myself. I have seen this too many times, i wonder how many people get hoodwinked by them. I noticed last year after Christmas, comments going around on the Forum, until i figured out the different veiws, that people were not getting the current or same rods and reels on thier seasonal special combo deals, I just will not give an outfit like that any of my money! I aint got my shorts in a knot or anything just making a statement :
I did not realize this was a ongoing problem, you have a good point if they are trying to sucker people into the store that tactic will not work for long people will wise up. Now that they are a sponsor here maybe they will use this thread as some feedback.
I did have a problem with this back in March. I ordered 2 Pro Qualifier spinning outfits, and they ended up sending me two current rods, but the reels were the 2005 models, and weren't with the MagSpool. I had a lot of problems with that, so I sent the reels back and they sent me the right ones. Simple as that.
I think the lesson here is to be an intelligent, educated consumer. Know what you want, and what you're willing to pay, and go get it. For me that means getting my hands on it before I buy it, for the most part.
There are some things I will buy online, mostly stuff I've bought before, and know something about. Anything new, or one those "too good to be true" deals, I'll wait until I can see it and handle it. Sure, you can always send it back. BPS has always been good about that, but who wants to mess with it? I'd much rather get it right the first time.
I've been aware of BPS's bait and switch tactics for special event or sale merchandise for quite a while. It does not stop me from buying from them. I simply know what to avoid. They still have lots a quality products at good prices. I know which ones fit my description of value, and will continue to buy and use their gear. I know they will stand behind it.
And if you're fool enough to fall for the old bait and switch, well maybe you'll learn something from it. You know the saying; fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me. ( Hey W, get it right, eh? )
P.T. Barnum was not entirely wrong when he said "there's a sucker born every minute".
Cheers,
GK
vMy dad used BPS for years. That was when they weren't to big. Now they are obviously they are huge.
Bait and switch, happend to me a couple of weeks ago with their BPS Extreme rods. 3 different prices.
I ordered some of their stick worms last year but the worms were cracked and old. I complained and told them to check the product when I sent it back to them they said "keep them" we will send you new ones. Well I get the "new" ones same problem. I complain so they give me a credit that expires in 6 months unknown to me.
The new location in Califonia is really cool but their products are the primary inventory. The rod selection is terrible. I think I have more rods. I also dont understand how the employees get a 40 percent discount on BPS products but their sales price for their products are obviously a rip off now.
Oh well.
I will ONLY use ***. Their products are more fitting for me in California and their shipping is the best.
Sorry for the problems Muddy, but that don't really work for me, i don't buy combos.
I would definetly point out the false advertisement to the manager, but would also read fine print that requires me to get reading glasses.
Have you ever read that fine print that says stores may substitute equivalent as needed if supplies run low, or no rain checks and etc.........
Has anyone had problems like those mentioned above with Cabela's? I would think that even though most people say that BPS is good about fixing their errors, the fact that they are making this many errors is inexcusable.
I've had some problems with BPS myself, but never with Cabela's. This is just part of the reason I've always been more of a Cabela's guy. The main reason is that I've been a Cabela's customer since I was a little kid. Obviously I'm totally psyched about Cabela's opening 10 minutes from my house.
I think this is common for BPS. They can call their reels what they want and make them look anyway they want but they are all a branded in house reel made for BPS. It may be a good reel or it may be a P.O.S.
I would still shop with them but be aware of what you are buying and shop on your terms, not theirs. If that means going some place else, so be it. I have always received good service from their stores though and when I have had an issue with a product, they have gone out of their way to make me happy. I can't say the same for their online/catalog .
Hey Muddy,
Don't let BPS drive you away because of a few misguided decisions by some pinheaded bean counters. As much money as we all spend at BPS, I figure that store belongs to all of us and it's our responsibility to fix the problem!
In honor of you, I've started and online petition that we can all sign and send to BPS. If we get enough signatures, somebody will have to read it. Right?
Either way, let's not go down without a fight!

Except they do not put the disclaimer for the combos and frequently put the current reel on the same page. That is plain out deceptive/ shopped with each of them? How come Cabela's has never done this , once in all the years i have
I am staying with Pflueger reels and Cabelas carries the whole line anyhow
To bad you don't know someone who worked at Academy; they could get your Pflueger reels at 25% off, the Purist is on sell for $49.99 minus 25% is $37.49.
here's my 2 cents worth! it seems that years ago customer service was MUCH!!! better than today. i remember the first time i ordered something out of the catalog(btw today i get more bps catalogs than i'll ever need/use) was about 15 years ago. I got a phone call confirming my order! got my whole order complete together a few days later. this was standard practice for every order i placed. remember one time they called me to inform me something i ordered was out of stock, and apologized about it. they adusted my bill, few weeks later sent me my backorder for free! (nothing real expensive few bags of lizards as i recall) but my point is this. back then it was a "small" business per say. seems customer service starting going by the way side when they started opening a BPS in every major city across america. now that you got me going! know what else a can't stand about BPS, i usually shop there in the evenings, work during the day like most people. it seems the bps close to me is staffed by mostly kids at night.
these kids are a pain in the a_ _ !!!!!! always walking up and giving their "expert "opinion about what i should or should'nt buy. not "can i help you "or "are you looking for something that i can find for you" or some kind of prefessional contact. it's "don't buy that color it sucks ive never caught anything on that go use this " or statements to that effect. one time i went to buy a new baitcasting reel(quantum pt). i told the kid what i wanted, his response was "no can't do it" i said excuse me he said "can't let you buy that reel, it's a piece of garbage"
"you should look at these instead" (daiwa) i was shocked! was he joking around ??? i don't know. BUT I DO KNOW I DID NOT ASK FOR HIS OPINION!
i looked at his name and when i checked out requested to speak to a manager. that took almost 30 minutes.
then theres the "sales" catalog sales you can't get in the store, the stuff in the flyer they mailed you is'nt really what is on sale. or my favorite the internet bargains. bandit crankbaits 1.99 yea one color i've never heard of or used!
don't get my wrong, do i still shop there, yes because it's easy! they have everything i need under one roof! no running all over town, first to dick's then local bait shop, walmart , on and on. it's just shame that some where greed overcame customer service. ok rant done.

15 years ago I vowed not to ever step on a large carrier airplane again becouse of the poor service. I have held true to that. What has happened in those 15 years? More people than ever are flying, and just when you think service has hit rock bottom, it keeps going down. I take a stand with the little bit of money I spend. I refuse to feed monsters with my money. If I think the service is atleast reasonable, I'll go back, if not, I won't go back, no matter how "convenient" it is. Too many people have the "that's just the way it is" or "the prices are so good though" train of thought. But, is it really ok to get crapped on just to save a couple bucks? Personally, I don't put that high of value on money to allow me to get treated poorly to save a little of it. I'm not directing anything at BPS, I have only ordered once from them. While the shipping was slow, and customer service had no clue about the status of my order, I did get what I ordered, at the prices I expected to pay. Right now, I'll look at them for offseason orders (becouse they are slow) but, as soon as I have a problem, I'll stop shopping there. Too many other stores out there, including the local stores that people may think are expensive, until they are gone. Once there is no places to get local info, and fresh live bait, and a replacement for your favorite bait you just lost the last one of, people won't realize the value of local stores either.
I've always said that BPS is a great place to shop if you know what you want. If you don't know what you want, someplace else may be better. I never order from BPS because they have a store near me. I buy a lot there, but it's always stuff I'm alreay familiar with - or educated myself on. I've learned not to ask too many questions at the BPS store because their sales people are just that, and usually not outdoor enthusiasts.
As much as I can, I buy from a store called Green Top in Richmond, VA. Their folks know hunting and fishing. Many staffers have been there for eons. Their folks know their stuff. They also carry lures/baits from lesser known makers - much of which is superior to the major brands. They can talk about fishing or hunting on a fisherman or hunters level. It's also a localy owned store. These are the kind of places I like.
BTW, if you ever go into a BPS store, have you noticed that that the Stren line they sell comes in weirds lengths? The big boxes are 550 yards (normally 1000 yards anywhere else) and the small boxes are 175 yards (normally 330 anywhere else). And the prices aren't really any lower than stroes that carry the 1000/330 yard boxes. Watch out if you buy Stren from BPS.
I have shopped both cabellas and bps for many years.
never had a problem with either one.
Now, it's true I haven't bought a house brand rod or reel from either place in maybe 25 years, but my experience with each has been great.
Sorry to hear about other's misery. I will pay a premium for great customer service, and I won't buy from a ho' house no matter how cheap the price.
Lately, with my taste becoming more and more Japanese, I have been using other suppliers, but I still put in an order to bps every few months.
good luck y'all. Hope things turn around for you.
I just got 2 Pflueger Trions on the Flea Market and got rid of my Pro Qualifers NOW ALL IS WELL IN MOOKDOM ;D
I will no longer shop there for another reason...backorder and shipping. There were 2 orders that come to mind where I ordered a lot of miscellaneous items for hunting, fishing, clothing, etc. I placed and confirmed the orders and had no clue that any items were backordered or never going to be delivered until my package showed up in a fairly small box and I was still charged shipping for the entire order amount even though half of the order was backordered and never sent. I called BPS and their response was that their system did not recognize the order was on backorder when I ordered and the system did not recalculate shipping because that was what I agreed to pay. 12.95 shipping for a small fairly light box that did not contain half of the packages then a BS response turned me off to BPS. If I cannot find it at Cabela's or Reeds then I will look elsewhere.
Corey
My online orders from BPS have been few. Maybe ten. So far, delivery has been prompt and correct on all items, but I never order rods or reels, or even worse, combos.
Dont be hatin' on BPS....make baitmonkey very angry!
Just to clarify none of my backordered items were rods, reels, or combos...they were lures and other small items.
i have had too many probs with bps to fool with em via mail. now i do buy from their stores in person, but baits only - no rods or reels. i'll relate 2 examples of their excellent customer service : for the benefit of anyone it may save the same hassle.
couple of years ago i got a reel from em. well i use braid which is notoriously tough on reels and the drag stripped out of it within a month. i called and complained. they nicely said, no problem we'll exchange. asked me if i wanted a reel like the one that tore up. 'course i said no, and chose another of the same price range. well it arrived about a week later, obviously a used reel (probably a return from some other unlucky customer) in a cardboard shipping box. no reel box, instructions, warranty. and the kicker was that i guess they decided to save me some trouble, b/c the drag was ALREADY messed up on this reel right out of the box!!! boy was i i called em back on the spot and just demanded they give me my money back. which they did and i have not bought one of their reels again - nor will i.
speaking of their reels, i have a good fishin' buddy who showed up one day with 2 of their new johnny morris top of the line baitcasters. he oo'ed and ah'ed over them, and i bet him they'd tear up within 3 months. well, i was wrong. it only took one month. he told me he opened em up to see what the prob was and was so p.o.'ed to open em up and find plastic gears inside his $150+ reels. he got a rude awakening to find out what his high dollar reels were really worth. meanwhile my 60-70 dollar pinnacles are still alive and well, as is my shimano cardiff.
to me, bps gives new meaning to the phrase "buyer beware!"
Fellas I am posting only once more, then i think I will leave this thread alone, before it gets uglier. I had no problems with the BPS Pro Qualifier Reels, I liked them a lot as a matter of fact.Same to be said with my buddies Fritts reels GREAT PRODUCTS FOR THE MONEY. I also had 2 BPS EXTREME Rods and reels, that i bought seperately. Thye end for me came when once again they used deceptive at best( Bait and Switch in some past deals) in putting together combos that were compared to branded products of greater value and selling products of lesser. If they didnt think it was wrong themselves, when a customer wises up, why do they switch to the implied product instead. So this is why I got rid of the last of their stuff I own and closed my account. They are the best advertisement for Cabela's i know of ;D
PS I traded my Pro Qualifiers off and I am winding up with a used Pflueger President( Plus some cash) and HOWS THIS FOR TIMINING I picked up 2 slightly used Pflueger Trions for the price of one, on our flea market: so all of my baitcasters now have my favorite reel on them ALL IS WELL IN MOOKDOM
