How do you attach crank baits? 2024

fishing user avatarskno reply :

.wondering what everyone does

fishing user avatarFish the Mitt reply :

Can I vote twice?! :D

Living up North, I have some waters with heavy pike/muskie population (one specific dam in particular). If i'm there, I'll use a steel leader w/ snap swivel on all my lures as I don't like being bit off or buying new lures! If not, I usually just tie to the split ring or direct.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

I'm guessing you meant split ring?  O-rings are rubber (or synthetic rubber), in my experience.

Split ring...

Tie directly to the factory split ring.

fishing user avatarthebillsman reply :

Oval split ring

fishing user avatarHog Basser reply :

If it comes with a split ring, I tied to that, if not, it is direct to the lure.

fishing user avatarKevin22 reply :

split ring...

wait a minute, we have 6 people (7 including me) who replied split ring but only 4 votes for it?

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

With a snap, it's a no brainer. There are numerous lure manufactures that provide new baits with a factory attached snap. The reason is because the bait runs better. Even some JDM bait manufactures do the same thing. And you never have to worry about your knot getting worn at the split ring opening.

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

tie to split ring.  those snaps and quick connect things are too small for my big hands.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

Sometimes a clip - other timed the Oval ring is the deal.

fishing user avatarbigturtle reply :

always clip

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

If it has a split ring, it's intended to be tied to. I can't bring myself to use a clip or snap after losing a big fish to the clip last spring. If you watch the people whose paychecks depend on landing fish, they won't be using a clip or snap.

But then I don't do everything they do like changing hooks.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I tie direct to the split ring.

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

I tie direct to an oval split ring 100% of the time.

fishing user avatarjbw252 reply :

Replace the split ring with an oval split ring, then tie direct.

fishing user avatarCatch 22 reply :

I use the best quality duo lock snaps I can find.I go thru every last one of them to check for quality and alignment.. I always use them with  LC`s and never a failure with size #2.

Yet, they do throw wiggle warts and bladed jigs/chatterbaits reasonably often, which use snap attachments by default no?

fishing user avatarGoose52 reply :

I tie most baits direct...except for crankbaits. While working around a lake, I often have 4 or 5 cranks in front of me and switch back and forth between those baits depending on the depth I'm trying to hit. Snap is the way to go in this case...

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

Norman Speed Clip which I hook into the split ring.

They're throwing a bait with the equipment it was designed for. They tie to that snap and cut the line to change baits. They don't remove the snap and use it for another bait it was not intended for. And you can bet those are high quality snaps that came with those baits.

To each his own. I see the need and usefulness for snaps. But I also have a recollection of a 6 lb bass swimming away before I could land and photograph it. Hey, I've had stripers straighten out the split ring on the back of a quality crankbait at the boat when I thought it was subdued. Why put needless accessories between you and your potential personal best or your favorite bait?

Like buzzed, my hands are less than dextrous.  Takes me longer to flail around with a Norman "Speed" Clip than it does to retie.

you should really watch me fooling around with them!  "speed" is definitely not a word that you'd use when describing.  goofy, painful, hilarious, cluster**** ....  would all be better used to describe the process!

fishing user avatarsmashinsmalliestv reply :

I usually use a snap, or tie direct. Anywhere there is pike or muskie I will throw a steel leader on. I usually use a snap on most hard baits.

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

When I was young I'd always use a snap swivel. For the past decade or so I've been tying direct on everything until last year I started using a snap swivel on my medium to deeper diving crankbaits. I think this next year I'll do the same, but tie direct on the squarebills still and it forces me to retie more often.

fishing user avatarskno reply :

Great replies!................yes I meant split ring :annoyed1: in the Poll.

The reason I ask was, I have a bud that uses a snap. I always tie to split ring but was considering a snap for quick changes. I think Ill look into the norman speed clip mentioned.

fishing user avatarErikmonBillsfon reply :

Tie to the split rig

But do you guys tie a loop knot or a tight knot? Can that be another choice? On jerk baits and frogs I tend to use the loop knot but cranks just a palomar or regular clinch knot.

fishing user avatarjignfule reply :

Last week I lost a XD attached to a "brad" brand 50# clip. Pop off like it was on a 2# leader. So no more clips or swivels.
