Guard your secret baits..... 2025

fishing user avatarTin reply :

Well I don't exactly have secret baits but I have baits that work very well on specific bodies of water. One is just a finesse worm with a piece of nail in it wacky rigged on one high-pressured body of water around here. I usually do a lot of damge with it there and it can fill a well really quick. After one tourney last year on this lake last year where it was a tough bite but I finished second on the little worm and most of he 30 guys had under 2 pounds, I had a guy who I was familiar with come over to my boat and we started talking. And I specifically remember this: I had left the worm on one of my spinning rods rigged up and he pulled the worm off and began examining it as we were talking. Well I'm prefishing for this tourney last weekend and guess who I see throwing that little finesse worm?

fishing user avatarBassin_Fin@tic reply :

There are baits that I modify in certain ways to make them look or act differently. The fish in some areas have already seen everything on the shelf from Dicks,K-mart,and wally world.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

You need a decoy rig on your front deck, like a UL rig with a 3/4 oz. Cleo with a pink Senko trailer. Also, if it s a two day job, and you'll have a different non boater each day, put your console FF in demo mode, LOL.

Seriously, I would guess that you know the hows, wheres, and whens about your "secret bats" - which are no secret at all really - and I'd think you'd almost always outfish the copy cat.

He may know about it now, but I would guess that you'll spank his behind with it 9 times out of 10

Ahh...

I guess we could move this to "Tournaments" and you guys could defend your sissy baits.

RW, why do you feel the need to bash tournament fisherman every chance you get?

  Quote
"Real fishermen" don't care...they'll kick your butt every day!

So what is your definition of a "real fisherman?" I'm really interested in your response to this. Maybe these "real" fisherman should enter some tournaments and make some money off all the 'posers'.

  Quote
Stay shallow, we don't want you guys fishing for OUR fish!

LOL! Are you for real? I don't know where you get your information but not all tournament fisherman are bank beaters. Might want to get yourself a new source for all of your "tournament fisherman hating" needs.

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

Don't sweat it Scott, Live bait anglers don't really warrant an opinion on this one.  No one is going to try and look in their shiner bucket to see what size they are killing them on. DOH!  Seriously R-Dub, we love ya to death but........where does this animosity come from??

For the record, I feel I know what I am doing, but whenever Tin fishes my lake,...he's usually schooling the rest of us.  I attribute this directly to his diversity as an angler.  Something he HAD to learn as a tournament agler to accomplish his current (long) list of accolades.

But back to the topic at hand, I also don't have much say as my tourny experience is less than 30 tourny's or so, and most of those were salt water.  I won't knock on something I have no experience with.

Tin,...I suggest launching at the next tourny with a helicopter lure tied on...... ;)  Even better, I'll make you a 7 section, 4 lb swimbait in Pink. lol

This is what strikes me the most out of this post.  He just started messing with your stuff while you were talking to him?  That seems odd to me.  Who is he to start grabbing at the stuff on your deck?

Maybe you should get some of those lure wraps that will cover the whole lure while on your rod.  I think BPS sells them.  They don't really look cool, but will keep people from seeing what you've got tied on.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Do you ever really look "cool" in a tx?  LOL.  The only time those goofy shirts look good is when you're at the weigh in and you have the biggest weight, then you look cool no matter what ;)
fishing user avatarMALTESE FALCON reply :

I agree with tyrius, I can't believe he would even consider touching any of your equipment or baits.

Falcon

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I assumed this occurred after the tourney, like at the launch before weigh in.  It would be weird during a tourney.

fishing user avatarTournyFish001 reply :

I have decoys tied on if I am on to something I will leave them on my deck and put the real weapons in the rod locker before I put my boat on the trailer- Proved to be beneficial, I will never outright lie to someone (say I caught them on cranks when it was actually drop shot or other soft plastics)  thats just not right but what they don't know will not hurt them- I will say I caught them on soft plastics or reaction but thats about as far as it goes.  After the tourny I will tell all because it dosent matter anymore things change so much.  I know a guy that will log past tourny's and the following year will use exactly what he "heard or saw" someone use- put it this way it is almost always different.  As far as someone coming up to you on the water- well, especially when prefishing I will put down the ace in the hole and let them pic out the one in 7-12 possiblilities that are stowed under the rod savers-

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

What "secret" baits ?  :-?

Baits are not secret, I think that aside from a few strange ( like those Gatta X I 've got ) or uncommon/ poorly known baits ( like those Mojo Salty Reefers I 've fished for over a decade ) we all have pretty much the same baits in our tackle boxes. You watching what I 've got tied doesn 't give any advantage to you over me if you are not fishing them where and how I fish them and even if I told you where and how you ain 't me behind the rod handle.

"Secret" baits, yeah right  :;)

It ain 't the wand, it 's the magician.

fishing user avatarBig Tom reply :

I only have one bait that I won't talk about too much because a friend showed it to me and told me he would appreciate it if I didn't show the color to many people.  As far as I am concerned I really don't mind telling people what baits I use because as far as I know there aren't many people here that fish our lakes but I still want to keep my word to him.  Other than that one instance, I have no secret baits or colors.  I like fishing soft plastics a bunch and keep the colors as natural as possible. That means pumpkins and watermelons.

fishing user avatardone reply :

I just can't believe someone would just grab your stuff off your deck like that. It is one thing if he asked you first but to just grab someones stuff...that's asking for a whoopin'.

I am about as friendly as you can get sharing info (course if i was in a tourney I wouldn't be), but that would urk me seriously.

I absolutely agree. I know from fact that people having the same bait as you and not knowing how to fish it, you will out fish them any day of the week, I do it to my friends all the time. I fish with lots of friends and acquaintances and they are always borrowing my tackle during the outing. I have turned about a handful of my friends from once a month anglers into weekly ritualists.

I think that if you're knowledge can help someone land bigger fish and get them hooked into bass fishing if they aren't already... spread the word and your knowledge! With this i always mention bass fishing courtesies.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Looking at other fishermen's baits is not unusual.

As long as you don't do it in the locker room.

Some guys try to hide their baits.  Others don't care as they know the location of where to fish, color, line test, rod and reel specifications and technique are more important than a specific bait.

I can throw any bait you have, modified or not, and you will still outfish me if you know where to go and how to present the same bait.

On the Potomac this past Sunday the fish wanted anything white.  Go figure? Moving and white. Big or small bait as long as it moved and was white, other than for the white or pearl Senkos.

We all know what the other guys like to throw.  And they know what you like to throw.

There is no crying in baseball and there are no secrets in bass fishing.  Maybe.  ;)

I would agree, until money is on the line.  Some people here, Tin included, are serious tourney fishermen.  You're not going to want to give away what makes you money.

That post you're referring to is quoted in my post, I didnt leave anything out.....just split it up a little bit. The original post mysteriously disappeared.  :-?

Good thing you didn't leave, should add another couple hours to that. Leaving for Great Sacandaga for the Weekend Series Regionals in a few hours. I usually get bored on the Mass Pike so keep your phone on.

I would be willing to bet that I have baits that catch me fish that nobody on this site has Raul. There absolutely are baits so under appreciated or rare that the should receive the status of secret bait.

I'm with the other posters in the fact that I will not flat out lie about what I am catching them on....unless it is a swimbait. If I am at the lake and anybody asks me if I am catching anything, I always say no.

The absolute funniest example of this was this year fishing with JUST, had a trout fisherman troll by the offshore ridge I was fishing and he saw my bait. Him:"You ever catch anything on those?" Me:"Never". At that precise moment I set the hook on a 10lb10oz fish that he watched all the way to the scale... he didnt say anything ;)

fishing user avatarMattlures reply :

I can gaurantee you I have secret baits, but this is the exception. I am very secretive on my waters. I dont mind helping all the members here but if you come by me while I am fishing I will quickly put my rod down and pick up a dropshot rod. I dont even fish tournaments either. I always store my rods in the locker before I launch and I put them back in before I come in. My standard answer when somebody asks how the bite is, "its tough" or "its slow" and if anybody asks if I caught anything I usualy say "a couple little ones" Now of course this is when I am targeting big fish. If I realy am dropshotting I will gladdly help people out that ask.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Secret baits? I'll gladly tell you what baits I'm throwing but it's up to you to figure the where, when, & how.

X2 yeah the magician means more than the wand yada yada yada- when you're fishing against top notch anglers the playing field is not as unlevel as say a beginner against a novice, that being said with money on the line it is different it just is- I know for a fact a guy can find out what works from someone else and use it to their advantage-

X2 once again- I have hand tied jigs and hand pours made specially for smallmouth up here in the northwest- I guarantee you, you do not have anything like them- once again I'd say sectret bait status

fishing user avatarBantam1 reply :

Wwhen I set up all of my gear for tournaments I do something really ghetto. I use Aluminum foil to wrap my lures  ;D You should see the looks I get!

fishing user avatarthetr20one reply :

My rods are in the locker until blast off. I have shared more here than to anyone local. I am secretive but will talk If asked in generals.
