Whats your favorite soft plastic buzzing style lure? Mine is a stanley ribbit rigged on a 4/0 EWG hook. Ill be trying the double take hooks soon
I have to use different ones for scenarios but Id pick the bps ones for me overall usage.
I have the most luck on zoom horny toads in black, when it comes to bass, even though its not my fave in the sense of design. Maybe the noise is enough to entice but not to spook, when compared to others.
I like BPS humpin toads, great durability/noise/action for general overall use.
Rage Shad for air raid quality noise and water disturbance when needed
JD's is most durable, heaviest and has great action
I too love the Stanley Ribbits and also use a 4/0 EWG hook on the standard 3.5" Ribbit, but for the Bull Ribbits, I step up to the 5/0 series of EWG. My favorite technique early in the year is to cast it to the bank, jump it into the water and let it fall to the bottom then slowly real it in. When you do this, the Ribbit has a natural tendency to turn on its side giving the look of an injured frog. If you do this near pre-spawn, it is a deadly tactic.
I will mention two rigging recommendations here though regarding top water frogs of any kind.
1. If you are having issues with the nose of the frog getting shredded from the keeper pins/anchors ripping out on aggressive strikes, then I would recommend rigging it with a small swivel to act as a guard. Here's how: https://picasaweb.google.com/108474160562442085621/RiggingYourPlasticFrogsSecurely#
2. I have used a variety of EWG hooks with my frogs, everything from Owner Beasts (don't like b/c they shred the nose too easily) and a regular Gammy EWG to the Zoom Horny Toad regular and double take hooks (btw I don't like b/c it rips the rear legs off to easy on short or missed strikes). The best hook I have found to date is actually a saltwater grade EWG hook for jerk shads made by Mustad. For those that like the Stanley Ribbits, this hook excels for rigging those frogs, because it has a small gauge wire diameter (easier penetration through the fish' mouth and easier to set the hook on) and a small profile hitching post that fits perfectly in the small head on the Ribbits. You can find them here: http://www.aquadreamliving.com/mu40wigaphow.html
Rage shad hands down
Cabela's paddle frogs....They have a great color that I love and they're actually more durable than other brands. I just have a lot of confidence in throwing frogs, so that is my choice 99% of the time.
BTW, don't use the stanley double frog hook with these! I have had MUCH better luck hooking up using a 4/0 or 5/0 EWG.
#1 The new Rage Tail Menace
#2 Rage Shad
#3 Rage Toad
BPS Humpin Toad for me. Usually the black color, but I did just pick up the 49 pc kit for $15. It has many different clors that I normally wouldnt use, but the $ I couldnt pass it up to give them a shot. The feet on these things make soo much noise compared to any other brand I have used, and surprisingly its BPS.
I use zoom horny toads, and Bitters or zoom Vibe worms early in the morning, black/yellow for the toads and redshad or houdini for the worms.
I like to rig a Ragetail Space Monkey, upside down, on a lighter 4/0 hook. When the damselfly hatch is on, this is a deadly pond tool. Think of it like a "finesse toad."
Zoom horny toad almost 100% of the time typically in black.
Rage Toad...when water is calm I trim part of the legs off so it is more subtle.
I use many of the ones mentioned earlier. They all have their applications. The ribbits work well for me but lately I mostly use JD's Custom Baits hand poured frog with a 5/0 Gamagatsu EWG Monster hook. It throws a country mile and doesn't get torn up so easy. It is a bigger bait than most of the ones sold at retail.
I really like rage Shads, and I especially like running them thru water meal and duck weed (the coarse green stuff on top), gotta keep it moving quick. Something about a bass exploding thru that stuff, gets ya fired up.
I caught my pb on a double blade buzz bait that bass just exploded thru the water meal. So cool. I was literally just screwing around seeing how high I could throw that green slop off of the blade, reeling as fast as I could when she hit.
Rage shad for sure! Caught my pb on it this past march. (pic in my avatar)
The eeliminator would be my 2nd favorite.
Horny Toad. Watermelon candy and green pumpkin/pearl belly. Rigged with a gamakatsu 5/0 EWG superline screwlock hook.
Stanley Ribbits with a Gammy EWG 4/0 or even with a keel weighted swimbait hook with a screw keeper in the front. Keeps the frog from running upside down. However, I once watched my frog come back at me upside down (Rage Toad, first time trying them, and they all ran that way) and as I was about to kill it and let it flip over before continuing my retrieve, a bass slammed it. To my disbelief, the hook set perfectly in the bottom of the jaw, so maybe it isn't such a big deal.
Watermelon red is the only color Ribbit that I throw.
Can't say that I am a fan of the double take hooks... tried them before and was really disappointed. I could have bought a whole pack of Gammys for the price of those two hooks, lol.
I have used alot of different frogs and i like the stanley ribbits because they are the easiest to find without ordering online.
I did start throwing the http://bogbaits.com/ frogs last year and they are really nice. I also like that they have floating versions that you can actually cast, not like the ribbits.
I usually go with a 4/0 or 5/0 screw lock trokar for rigging and haven't had to much luck with the double take frog hooks.
ZOOM Horny Toad...lights OUT!

Ck out the Rigging info on the Rage Toad and if you follow that style of hooking inst. with any toad or soft plastic Top water... they'll perform correctly. I use weighted hooks as well but for any one of these reasons when necessary: wind, waves, further casts, faster retrieves and changing sound to deeper tone.

I appreciate the diagrams sir. I personally like a lot of the Rage line (finally got around to using the craws, what a fool I was to wait this long!), but I simply won't be using any of the toads again. Thousands use them and apparently they run just fine, but maybe my two packs from the clearance aisle just weren't up to snuff. Perhaps they were old or something. I have been using Ribbits even before they hit the market, and when they run upside down, you are absolutely right, 99% of the time they aren't rigged dead center. However, two packs in a row with ten frogs all flipping over on me just didn't leave a good impression.
For what it's worth, the body profile of the toads are great. Nice action as well. I work for a large outdoor retailer as pro staffer (college job), and while I say here that I won't use them personally, I have never talked bad on them or recommended against them in our store. I'm just not that kind of guy.
Thanks again for the tip Big O, it's a great diagram for anyone to see and use. If you are ever in South Louisiana, stop by and bring me some promo goodies to try! I'm always looking for product knowledge! Makes my job easier!
I personally prefer the Stanley Ribbit Frog.
Jay Ell Gee, there were some of the RT's that were placed on shelves before the Clams were in stock which IMO illustrates the importance of the clams even more. The RageToad can be tweaked to tone the aggression all the way down to a mere tickling of the waters surface, so it's versatility takes it to another level as well. The RageShad can be tweaked in the same manner...
Roadwarrior...what's the best way to rig those new Tail Menaces? On 12/20/2012 at 10:28 PM, roadwarrior said:#1 The new Rage Tail Menace

I'm using a 1/8 oz jig head with enough shank to get the hook almost to the tail.
For topwater the tail should be horizontal. To fish it like a minnow, rig it so the
tail is vertical. When used as a swim jig trailer, also rig it vertical. Play around
with different weights to see what you like. Remember, the body must be straight
for proper presentation.
Oops! This should be obvious, but I will mention it anyhow: separate the tail.

My 2 favorites are:
1. Rage Toad in green pumpkin/pearl belly
2. Reaction Innovations Trixie Shark in black
Seizmic Toad in any color; as long as it's WHITE.
I like the rage toads & rage shads in any color, as long as it's white. They make good swim jig trailers too.
