fishing user avatarcaptnstabn reply :

I lasted two months with the Mtb pro.  It was a gift from the wife.  I realized what someone once posted here, it seems like it's all "clearance" type baits that don't sell in stores and they buy in bulk.  Then put them in a box and ship them to you.  The "value" of the baits they send is no where near the price the put on the card, as no one would pay full msrp for any of them.  Brands I've never heard of, or name brands but dumb baits or colors. Out of both boxes I think I got one lure each that I liked and used.

Some people like the monthly surprise of mystery baits, but it wasn't for me.  I initally was excited for it, but after two boxes I was dissapointed.  Id rather have the 25 bucks to spend on things I'm gonna use.  Maybe you'll like it.

fishing user avatarDoug Anderson reply :

I enjoy MTB and find the prices listed are close to online prices.

fishing user avatarCybrSlydr reply :

We started with Lucky Tackle Box and got about 5 of them and are now trying out Mystery Tackle Box.  We got last month's and are awaiting this months.

MTB seems to have an overall theme - like the one we got last month was mostly drop-shot stuff - drop shot hooks, pencil weight, some drop shot shads, etc.

LTB seems a bit more random.  Once we get a few more MTBs under our belt I think we'll have a better handle on which we like better.

fishing user avatar12poundbass reply :

I've found the Pro box to be better. After a few months with the regular box I was getting bored, seemed like it was the same thing or pretty close month after month. The Pro box however in my opinion is the way to go. Like CybrSlydr said it appears they do have a them. I was glad to get the drop shot box last month. There isn't a whole lot of drop shot stuff being sold in my area, so it was nice to get it and look forward to trying it.

fishing user avatarnpl_texas reply :

I was subscribed to MTB and LTB for about 6 months each.  At first it's very novel and cool but over time I just accumulated a lot of lures I have never and will probably never use.  I realized that instead I would just take the $50/month and buy whatever tackle I want.

LTB has introduced themes on their boxes since JUNE of this year.

JUNE: Top Summer Baits

JULY:  Top Water Baits

AUG:  Big Fish Baits

Sept:  Top Fall Baits.

Both are great companies with similar business models.  I think it's great that you are trying out both.

You'll have to forgive me - the last LTB we got was in February (though we'll be getting a Bass Pro box this month and next I believe), so I wasn't aware LTB had moved to a "theme" as well.

One thing I'll say LTB impressed me with was the videos on the month's lures and the personalities they have.  Travis Moran is a really fun guy to watch.  Quality productions.

fishing user avatarDoelman reply :

It's worth trying, especially with a discount for your first box.  It's exciting getting random baits, kind of like opening up a christmas present.  Some of the stuff is garbage, some of the stuff is good, it's definitely not all clearance type stuff.  With that said, if you're on a strict budget for fishing stuff I wouldn't do it.  Nothing I've gotten out performs the stuff I've bought on my own.  It's strictly for fun and trying out new stuff.

What he said.

I get ideas for new lures from this forum, then order the ones I'd like to try.

fishing user avatarImThatGuy reply :

I have a subscription to both LTB XL and MTB Local (California).  Both are great boxes and really help me broaden my approach.

LTB never got a dud box, but sometimes get box contents that differ from card or randoms without a card. Liking the new themes.

MTB was getting boring with Pro box, a few duds - in fact, I canceled for a few months.  But MTB Local is a game changer.  Not about the deal but curated baits for your area picked by a pro.  All quality and top of the line.  Each box has had 3 presentations.

If I had to choose between LTB XL or MTB pro, I would take LTB.  But MTB Local would be my first choice if available.

C'mon LTB, how about about a Local box or at least one local bait in each box.

fishing user avatarMIbassyaker reply :

If you are particular about what baits you use, and you always know what you want when you shop for lures, neither MTB or LTB are for you.

You need to understand that you are accepting a gamble in return for an overall discount. You're going to get a variety of things you may or may not know what to do with. You're going to get some things you've never heard of or seen before, but that's part of the point -- one of the goals is to give exposure to lesser known brands and items. You will also get some high-end, and buzzed-about items, new releases and such. You may get some slam-dunk lures you have never chosen to buy yourself.  You'll probably also get some things here and there that just turn out to be duds.  But it is most certainly not mostly clearance or bargain bin baits. I happen to really like the gambling aspect. I've been doing MTB for a little over two years, and had LTB for awhile too.  I definitely feel like I got my moneys worth with both services. But, again, it's not for everybody.

Here, for instance, are my last two MTB pro boxes:

MTBprobox170615.thumb.jpg.cebed0b1782849ac1b5026e2db111e99.jpg

V&M buzz frog, Biospawn vile craws, arashi squarebill, charlie's worms finesse worms, lucky john lui pencil topwater, mustad swimbait hooks, garlic scent

MTBprobox170711.thumb.jpg.ed2d1c7364dc2aa14c6d4fcb9110343c.jpg

Duo Realis spinnerbait, Kahara topwater rat, KVD dream shot, Shimmer shad, Zorro Jig, trapper drop shot hooks, drop shot weights.

That's 2 boxes, $25 each. These are pretty representative of the variety I see in the MTB pro box. Now, I feel I easily can get, and have gotten, $50 worth of use out of these particular items. Would you feel the same way if you had gotten them? That's something only you can answer.

fishing user avatarGus Heinze reply :

Being new to baitcasting, coming from Fly Fishing and wanting to learn something new I subscribed to MTB bass box tonight. The August box should arrive soon, I'm excited to subscribe to the service. I did a bunch of reading and thought on other's opinions when it comes to LTB v MTB and here is my 2 cents being a newbie.

It seems the knock on MTB is their bags of soft baits are sample size and LTB is a full package, personally I'd rather have a smaller assortment as after-all I'm trying to learn new lures and techniques. I'm not looking to load up my garage with a bunch of tackle. If I try some I like then I will search those out and purchase more, the ones I don't care for, I won't have a full bag and not know what to do with the remaining.

I also read that LTB and MTB are very similar in what you get each month and LTB has videos on each lure they send. I see MTB has videos too, so I don't see a difference, if you can watch the LTB videos and their products are similar to MTB why can't you apply the techniques to similar style lures from either company?

Being a small business owner myself Eagle Plumbing  the deciding factor was MTB was first, I appreciate both companies and I'm sure LTB has helped the course of both companies development, I just appreciate MTB being the first.

It also helps that in one MTB video I watched the guy has a TEXAS A&M logo sticker on the deck of his boat. Gig 'EM Aggies!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sHm5Q1g5usY

I also like how MTB has other items, reels, rods, apparel, gear, etc...for sale and you can have those items shipped for free with your monthly MTB. I picked up a Catch Co hat (needed a good fishing hat) and a few other items with my first order. Eventually I'll be looking for a spinning rod/reel setup so I'll probably look for more gear from MTB.

Excited for the August box to arrive, this will be neat as I'm learning along side my kids, it will be nice to learn about different lures and proper presentation techniques so I can pass that along to my 6 and 9 year old boys (20 month old daughter will learn too :-)

Happy Fishing!

Any particular reason?

If I have an abundance of lures after 3 months I don't see why I wouldn't. As far as I'm concerned this service and others like it are to introduce us to new/different lures that we would not buy individually. If I get a well rounded tackle box with multiple options to pick from then I would say the service is doing it's job.

I found i was accumulating lures I wouldn't use or didn't like. Every once and a while you'd get a gem,but it wasn't often enough for my liking. After 6 months or so I found I'd rather spend the 20-25$ on stuff i knew I would use regularly. I wouldn't say it rounded out my tackle. I also liked LTB better than MTB just for the full packs of plastics. After months of subscriptions to both it wasn't for me. I didn't need 30 different styles of worms, craws, cranks. The 2 specialty hooks and the sample packs of scent. Maybe its different now.maybe its what your looking for. I gave away most of the stuff in the end. Just about everything in my bag today wasn't the result of either subscription box, but the usual tried and true products most of us use. Hope you enjoy them, not a bad product or idea. Just not for me.

I remember reading reviews about MTB taking a while to show up, I don't think it has a thing to do with MTB I think the people at the postal places need to learn how to do their jobs better. This is nuts!

Ordered 8/14/2017

Shipped DHL 8/16 leaves Memphis.

Arrives Houston 8/18

Transfer to USPS ships Houston to Bryan (where I live) arrives in Bryan 8/23 1:41pm

Ships Bryan to Houston 8/23 2:56pm

Departed Houston 8/23 3:55pm.

I assume it will arrive sometime this week. I have not idea why it needs to go back and forth from Bryan-Houston-Bryan.

It's amazing that things like this happen it's even more amazing if you have Amazon Prime you receive items within 2 days, they must use a better USPS. LOL

Just wanted to say I don't think it has anything to do with MTB, it's the wild back and forth process of the people handling their packages.

fishing user avatardavid in va reply :

They both ship the cheapest way , and that is slow , I canceled my subscriptions from both. I don't know if I will get a refund or they will ship the remaining boxes

 We will see

boxes were ok, just too many lures

Usually when it goes in circles like that it means the package was lost. Please contact our support team through the website and we'll send a replacement ASAP.

About 90% of our boxes are delivered within 5 business days from when we ship, unfortunately the remaining 10% can be slower, especially for customers in rural areas. We do our best to balance offering free shipping on a $15/$25 product (most sites make you spend $50-$99 to get free shipping) and still have reasonable shipping times. They past 2 months we have been shipping our boxes out faster than ever. Historically we did not start shipping until the 8th or 9th of the month. The past two months we had 95% of our boxes out BEFORE the 6th! We are always working to improve the experience and we hope to continue to find ways to increase shipping speed for our customers.

Thanks for the feedback! We now have the ability to easily pause your subscription for up to 6 months so you can always take a break if the boxes start to stack up and you need a break.

DHL? Didn't know they did domestic anymore, last I was involved in shipping they had tanked the US domestic business and for good reason. The tracking back and forth can be odd though, ever had something shipped FedEx Smart Post? That's a service that will leave you scratching your head by the time it finally shows up.

Funny - I had a DHL rep in my office yesterday, and we were discussing this exact topic.  DHL did leave the domestic market - but they are back.  Funny thing is - she was saying that nobody realizes they are domestic now, lol.

Guess she was right :P
