I saw the SK squarebill today in a black fire tiger color. I have saw the 6th sense black Magic and others. These lures are about to hook me as I can't resist them. Has anyone had any success on these color cranks? What is supposed to be the optimum time and conditions for using black crankbaits?
Black is the color of choice for a lot of anglers in stained water, myself included.
I know some guys that have had success with them in early spring around emerging pads and grass
They were pretty consistently sold out on TW for awhile for a reason. I don't know the perfect conditions for them, but I know when they're working they can really be magic.
Here in Texas we have the Rio Grande cichlid, which is black with blue spots/accents— especially in the spring. It’s about the size of a bluegill.
I throw the 6th Sense when the fish move up early with stained water. Gives them something different to look at when most people on my local lake are throwing bladed jigs. Offers a faint rattle and decent stock hardware.
In mid to late summer a black Little N, Bandit, or Balsa B with an orange belly is one of the best colors to use in the Atchafalya Basin. The water color can be heavily stained to muddy. I've been using this since the early 70's.
This past summer the Basin was muddy in most areas. This combo produced best out of all crankbaits I used.
If you can find it, there is one from Megabass. It's the baby griffon with holographic eyes (Insect Matte Black, I think) and there is also one color called Shibukin tiger. Both are amazing but they only go done about a foot.

I don’t even use cranks very often. but I will not be able to walk past a black fire tiger in the store and I don’t even know what it looks like.

Exactly!! I think SK calls it Wicked Firetiger but the 6th sense one especially the one with those green eyes looks amazing. It's an addiction for me
Black plugs (crank baits) date back into the early 1900's and remain a popular color for over 100 years...nothing new.
My 1st Bomber lure was color #2 black late 50's along with the black silver spook color Heddon River Runt.
Black crank baits are essential night lures.

We used to (late 70's) paint a Spence Scout black and hang a tiny white grub off the tail treble hook and throw it when it was cloudy and stormy and work pre emerged pad flats and catch a lot of fish.
EverGreen Combat Crank in Black Blue Craw #85.
I'll let you know when my 6thsense order comes in. I fish a lot of dirty water, so I've got high hopes.
The solid black Bandit 100 and 200 have been confidence baits on rivers for years. Nothing fancy about it, but it just catches fish.
Black is a staple in the musky world. Any bait any time it's one of the best options. Im surprised people are so hesitant to embrace it with crankbaits when all i hear about are black jigs and plastics.

I kind of am, too. That's part of why I finally decided to jump into it. I like fishing dark baits, figured I need to give it a shot with this.

Definitely. Black bucktail Musky Killers, Eppinger Dardevles in Black Magic and Grey Ghost and a Bomber 16A in black will catch musky, pike ..... and nice bass. ???????????? jj
You all are going to keep on with this till the bait monkey starts telling me to go buy some black crank baits.

Fine, I’ll get some jeez.
Traditionally crankbaits are used in more natural colors for bass fishing. But for me, black is a staple color regardless of species. I love 6th Sense squarebills. They’re my favorite crank. I haven’t been able to purchase one of the black colors, so I spray painted one last winter and did very well with it!
My mind was made up to invest in some of these black plugs even before I made this thread however this week I bought 4 cranks in various colors of red lol

I'm tempted to spray a jerkbait black to see how that does.
I've had this bait for a bit now but have yet to throw it. I'm afraid it may scare the bass away.
Paranormal Craw color.
I've heard this saying since childhood......once you try black....

Aw, man. Now I wish I'd got one of those, too.
I fish a muddy river pretty often, and let's just say black crankbaits get throwed quite regularly.
Also change skirts on my War Eagles to Black. Dont be afraid to throw black.

Never get 1 of any lure!

You must have seen how I cast.
I kid.
I'll usually get one of a hard lure when I'm trying a company or pattern out, see how it works and whether I like it or not, and then I'll go back to the well. Keeps me from having a closet full of junk I'll never fish (which, incidentally, is the same reason I cancelled my MTB subscription).

Especially with these guys roaming your waters. I've spent more dang money on baits because of them. Got this guy this fall on a Red Eyed Shad. No idea how it didn't bite me off. Even had the bait way down in it's mouth.

Hah, man I read “cichlid” as “cicada” and got really alarmed when I read your last sentence.

Good choice also. Good tidal water color pattern.
Use black crankbaits for stained water or night fishing!
When I was night tournament fishing Poe's Super Cedar 300 black w/orange belly and Normans DD22 Black and Black red craw were my go to crank baits during the dust to dark transition time. Poe's is a wooden lure no rattles and Normans plastic with rattles, never knew which lure the bass preferred until trying them. You would think the rattle lure would work better at night or very low light but Poe's caught more 6 lb to 7 lb bass then Normans over a 10 year period.

Paranormal Craw color.
That seems to have the profile of some Lucky Craft cranks I've used -- a profile that works really well at night time in the early summer up in the northeast.
For me, more times than not, I have a Bandit 200 BLACK crankbait tied on. It performs tremendously for me. But I'm also in greenish/stained waters

I'm thinking about spray painting a few cheap Walmart baits that I have duplicates of.
During the warmer months I do weeknight tournaments. I have a separate box that has a bunch of black and black/blue hard baits in it. I lost a discontinued black Strike Pro lipless this season. I'll have to find a replacement black lipless before we start up again.
See schplurg above.

Yes, they work great on the Historic James River east of Richmond.
Strike King Slab Hammer mini crank in black is a stream SMB killer. Overall it's a great small crank.
