I see posts fairly frequently saying, "I'm going to flip 3/8oz Texas Rigs... what rod?" It seems that a lot of people don't take into account the weight of the plastics that they will be throwing when considering a rod. I got bored one night this last summer and weighed out a bunch of baits I use a lot and thought that some people might find this useful. I weighted 5 random baits and averaged them.

Ya ever weigh a 1/4 ounce spinner bait?

Hahaha, I bet it's more than a 1/4oz...
Last year on Champlain the Smallies were not biting the really aggressive plastics. It was the smaller more subtle acting plastics that hammered them, hence no Rage Tail.
It always amazes me how we still find reasons to fondle our gear, even when they're not getting put to good use cause we can't be on the water. Gotta love it
Still confused on the 5 and 6 inch senkos... how?

I have a SK Rocket Shad spinnerbait rated at 1/4oz and actual is .2409oz its a bit smaller than a regular spinnerbait though.
For a couple Rage tails
Anaconda 10" .5116oz

and thanks to ts for starting this

Amazing, ain't it?
Know what else? Spell check accepts "ain't" as a word. Take that, teachers!
When I have 3/8oz custom spinnerbait mold made they just used the weight of the lead itself. Most spinnerbaits weigh twice what the package says.

Remember that most plastic float somewhat. Especially ones without salt. So they actually are much lighter in the water.
Any yes spinnerbait weight is usually head only and can weigh double with blades and hardware
Great information. Thanks
Regarding spinnerbaits, I posted this about 4 years ago - actual weights of some spinnerbaits that I had on had, with the weights rounded off to the nearest 1/8th.

Me thinks maybe it has a different plastisol, salt, etc composition?
was the 6" senko used? maybe some salt dissolved when it was used?
did you measure more than one 5" and one 6"?

VT is Vermont ?
Ok, yes it is, so that means the North, above the Mason-Dixon line where right now it´s cold, snowy and the water is in solid form and it won´t be liquid in several months.
Well, we us guys down here in the South don´t got time to go ´round weighting baits, we are actually using them to catch fish.
LOL yep we spend 7 months fishing and complaining about the wind and weather. Then spend 5 months talking about how we miss it and how awesome next season will be!
What does the get a life emogie look like?
Already posted this on another thread I found, but I want to revive this topic bc it is very informative. Definitely something to think about...
Just wanted to tell everyone how glad I am that this topic popped up again. It’s totally changed the way I rig my plastics. My go to soft plastic is a baby brush hog, which on average weighs about 7 grams or 1/4oz. I’m also a big fan of the Havoc Pit Boss, which on average weighs about 10.5 grams or 3/8oz. I know that density, salt content, and many other factors come into play as well, but if I was fishing a Zoom BBH with 1/4oz bullet weight, putting a Pit Boss on the same setup will fish differently. Might not be a huge difference, but think about how much of a difference there is between a 1/2oz jig and a 5/8oz jig. It’s definitely made a difference in my fishing ????????
