Does a name make you buy or not buy a certain brand? 2024

fishing user avatarBass Dude reply :

I'm questioning this because someone posted something about not using a certain product because Roland Martin uses it.  Does anyone else do this??

I was reluctant to use YUM products for years because of Bill Dance.  I tried YUM because of the Papi----Now, I use almost all of there styles of plastics and have a ton of confidence in there product.

Just curious how much this determines what you use or don't.

fishing user avatarBass_Fanatic reply :

Yes! Yes! Yes!

I normally try and stay away from all the "big" name people and baits and look for something different.  For instance, if KVD says use sexy shad color strike king cranks, I dont just becasue I know about a billion fisherman are going to be throwing it and I want something different.  not saying that they dont work, but I like the undr-the-radar stuff. 8-)

fishing user avatarIdahoLunkerHunter reply :

I buy my baits on color(look) and action in the water ... has nothing to do with who makes them or endorses them (Professionally), I alays appreciate peoples opinions on here ;).

fishing user avatarFishing Rhino reply :

Personalities don't influence my purchase either way.  If something works, I wouldn't avoid it because Bill Dance gets paid to push it, nor would I buy everything he hawks either.

I put a good deal of stock in what fellow fishermen say on here.

I'll also give some consideration to the reviews found on the online catalogs.

I'll confess, I'm somewhat of an impulse buyer when it comes to trying a new (to me) lure.  It has to look good to me, unless I've read reliable recommendations for a lure.

When it comes to Bill Dance, or any of the other noted show hosts, they'd have success with lures I'd get skunked trying to use.

On the other hand, in some of the places they fish, you could put a long shanked hook through a wine bottle cork, glue on a seagull feather and pull 'em in, one after another.

fishing user avatarJake. reply :

The brand of the product matters much more to me than whoever endorses it. For example, I will never buy anything from Shakespeare, even if (for some reason) KVD endorsed it.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Yes, I am VERY brand loyal and will only buy new baits/lures

that are highly recommended by people I know or trust. I never buy

anything on impulse and never fish anything "new" but untested.

Examples of "cutting edge" baits would be the GYCB Senko, Fat Ika,

Kreature, Kut-Tail and Swimming Senko. I fished these baits when

they were brand new based on "trusted recommendations" and later

the GYCB reputation. I was among the "first on my block" to fish X-

Raps, Sammys and Pointers.

8-)

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

I purchase a bait the first time based on the qualities I am looking for. If it performs as expected then I will purchase more and stay with it until it fails my expectations. If one does fail to perform, I don't give that brand a second chance to fail.

fishing user avatarSiebert Outdoors reply :

I trust the guys on here more anyday then someone that gets paid by the industry.

If I ask someone on here if brand x is good or bad here I will get an honest opinion.  If I ask KVD if his line conditioner is good what do you think the answer will be.  Even if it was/is not good.

fishing user avatarJig Man reply :

Absolutely, positively, totally, completely, NO.  Brands don't mean a thing to me except for rods and reels.

fishing user avatarBantam1 reply :

My problem is that many of the TV pros are not brand loyal (well most of them) so its hard to believe anything they say. One year they are sponsored by company A and then by company B the next year. When they switch it has nothing to do with the product except for the paycheck they receive from them. When you hear them talk its a different story or this bait is the best because...

This is why I find my own tackle to use and listen to other friends that I trust. Bass fisherman are liars and will not let everyone know exactly what they use. Who can say that the crank we see someone using on TV is really the same as what you and I purchase on the rack? Is that worm color one that we can buy or is it a "pro staff only" color.  The companies I have complete faith in and not affiliated with are as follows:

Huddleston

3:16 Lure Company

GYCB

Roboworm

Open Water Custom Tackle

Owner

Mustad

Seaguar

Sunline

Izorline

Norman

Pradco/Bomber (Fat Free Shad only)

Lucky Craft

Reaction Innovations

Megastrike

Boze (Sumo frogs)

I can't go wrong with any of these products no matter who endorses them  ;) I use their products a lot and have never ever been let down. I even cashed a check or two in tournaments because of them.

fishing user avatarGone_Phishin reply :

As far as baits and soft plastics are concerned, no. I have kept my BPS and Cabela's master fishing catalogs for the past ten years or so. I like to look back at the products of the major bait companies, and see which 'new, best ever, most fish catchingest' baits have gone the way of the dodo.

Every year reputable tackle makers release a few new baits, or a new line. Some are winners, a lot are losers.

fishing user avatarMatt Fly reply :

I will only buy a new product based on my friends inputs.      I know these guys and have confidence in their sticks and know they don't make a living selling baits, they work for a living.

Why do you think this Forum is known as one of the best?

That's cool. Another way to look at it is to see how many baits survived over the years, like tubes for instance. Remember when they were THE must have bait ? Now it seems mostly the smallmouth guys use them.

fishing user avatarkbkindle reply :

yes i normaly do at least once if item is not as advertized will not do it again  like rowland martin  he will sell anything i pay no attention to him but do kvd

Opps.

Like Gman said he trust the guys on here that have used a product.

Now, I agree with him and having a second thought to give MegaStrike a stab base on what lot of folks here commented with good results (new version is still in question)

Image of R. Martin plastered all over on that site is like a sore thumb. ;)

No offense Bobby.

fishing user avatarBassFishingMachine reply :

If I find alot of the products of a specific brand to work well, and all in all like them, then yes, I'll be more likely to buy more of their products. Although I do not buy a product simply because its a brand I like, it has to look good to me, and be what I am looking for, or interested in at the time.

The main thing that gets me to buy products, especially higher priced products, is reviews and credibility which I hear from other people

fishing user avatarMicro reply :

I am not brand loyal to any great extent.  I like trying different things.  But I am more likely to try something new from a company that has consistently produced quality and high performing lures without a recommendation from someone than I am from a company I am unfamilar with or had bad experiences with.   But if a bait it too unorthodox, I won't try it at all no matter who makes it unless it gets tested over time and becomes recommended (then, its no longer as unorthodox  ;)).

fishing user avatarThe Next KVD reply :

I don't think KVD or any other pro has had an influence on my purchases. If I think it looks intresting I usually buy one of it to test out. If it produces but not to the standard of some other baits that I already have, they get a back seat. However, if I just hammer the fish a few trips after the purchase than I'll stock up. I am brand loyal as well however, I use alot of generic plastics to save some $. Product Lines I trust are:

Storm/Rapala

P-Line

Trilene

Heddon

Berkley

Falcon Rods

Shimano

Power Pro

I also make alot of my own tackle such as jigs b/c I haven't found a current product out there with features I want such as a certain hook or a thicker weedguard ect..

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I'm more apt to try a soft plastic from someone new to me, but I've been burnt on hard baits.

fishing user avatarThe_Natural reply :

I didn't need to read the thread; the answer is no.

fishing user avatarDonkey punch reply :

I don't know why,but I have never cared what people are using.

I have always bought Rapala crank baits.

Zoom for plastics.

Spinner baits vary on blades and colors, nothing else.

What I have been doing works for me.

fishing user avatarjack1 reply :

When it comes to higher dollar purchases, I am very brand loyal.

Stuff like hooks, lures, tackle boxes, and etc I'll give it a shot anytime of the week as long as it get good reviews from good/weekend type anglers.

X2! Long Live Rodney! (I miss him) ;D

Anyway brand and performance is more important. I listen more to you guys than Bill Dance or Roland Martin. They get paid to use the stuff they use. You guys use stuff because it works!

fishing user avatarHooked_On_Bass reply :

Nope.

fishing user avatarPrimus reply :

I will try new stuff out of curiosity. An example was the Ima Flit jerkbait, I  bought one last season that was on sale from Tackle Warehouse in the ghost color which is a color that I'm very confident in for my area. I definetely gave this bait a try in situations that called for a jerkbait and it turned out to be a winner. There were a couple of occasions when it seemed to be the best choice on a given day compared to my X raps & pointers etc. This bait seems to run a little deeper than a Pointer and with it's triangular body profile seems to flash a little more. This bait earned a spot in my jerkbait arsenal for the upcoming season and I plan on picking up a few more colors along with a back-up Ghost pattern in case I get bit off from a Pike. Same thing last season with the Jackall Muscle Deep, I started off with 1 Chartreuse shad, now I have app 10 of them and will likely pick-up a few more back-ups/ colors this season. I also consider post on Forums such as this one as well as baits that earn prominence on the Pro tour such as the Sebile Magic Swimmer & Bass Trix paddle tail. Like any angler my ultimate feedback comes from the fish in my area as well as my execution of the needed techniques to bring out the potential of the bait. I'm more loyal to specific lures than brands however certain brands like Lucky Craft, Yamamoto generally will make me more likely to sample their new products based on track record.

fishing user avatarTournyFish001 reply :

Yes, it helps but its an educated decision.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I have been guilty of this a few times, but less and less as I get older. I think the last time I bought something on name/hype was a few packs of Berkley Chigger Craws after Boyd Ducket won the classic using them.

fishing user avatarjimmieO reply :

Like most of the others are saying...it depends on what we're talking about. I will try almost anyone's soft plastic stuff once. The hard baits are another story, i really like strike king and H20 express cranks. I have bought several cheaper baits and the finish wears out very quickly or they come out of the package needing tuning (WHICH I ABSOLUTELY HATE DOING). As far as rods and reels, its more like brand disloyalty...there are a few manufacturers that I would absolutely NOT buy from.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

The last lure I have bought without being "recommended by

someone I know or trust" was quite awhile ago. This is a Lucky

Craft Live Pointer. The following year I bought two more just

because they were on sale! Proving once again, there is no

shortage of stupid...

On a brighter note, Big O sent me some Rage Tail Ananconda

which I had never heard of and would not have purchased.

These "new to me" baits turned out to be fantastic and I

HIGHLY recommend that you give them a try! I have

gone through the bag he gave me and subsequently bought

two more when BPS received their first shipment.

8-)

fishing user avatarshootermcbob reply :

I don't buy too much of what is promoted. I use cabelas brand rods and reels because I like them, I have caught fish with them, and cabelas backs them 110%. It also doesn't hurt that they have some great sales. As far as baits go, I am fairly new to the sport and still like trying new baits/brands. I had most success this past summer with Zoom brush hogs...so I have purchased several packs of them since the past summer. I tend to buy more of what I had good luck catching fish with. I have since found that I have purchased some flukes, finesse worms, trick worms, and baby brush hogs...all in the zoom line.

fishing user avatarmattm reply :

It certainly can keep me from buying something.

fishing user avatarBtech reply :

I stick with what works - Wich isnt much this year ;)

fishing user avatarJames Williams reply :

I think its silly not to use something becouse someone else is using it. I have just about every name brand out there. Somedays they want a watermelon red but like the senko color better then the yum color. 8-)

fishing user avatarMac1 reply :

I never pay attention to endorsements. If I'm considering a new lure to try I listen to people that are not paid to push a product. That's one of the many reasons I enjoy this forum so much. Honest feedback and recommendations.

fishing user avatarMattlures reply :

I tend to be brand loyal and boycott other brands if they are blatant knock offs. I will buy the original unless the alternative is better wich happens about 1% of the time. For the most part when I see something new or different I can tell just by looking at it where it would work. Then I compare it to what I already use in that situation and if I cant think of an improvement I dont by the bait. I do have some favorite brands though and I tent to give them the bennifit and give their new products a try.

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

Not realy. I stick with Zoom, Lucky Craft, Bill Lewis, Bagley, and Stanley products for 90% of my tackle. It's worked for me for many years. I will jump on certain colors until I feel like the fish have seen too much of them and then revert back to my old standard choices.

fishing user avatarCaptain Chaos II reply :

I purposely omit anything Roland Martin pimps .... after he endorsed the rocket launcher "fishing pole" for kids.

As far as reels...if it says Daiwa, I'm buyin.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Yeah, those Aruka shad really suck.  Don't use them  ;)

I know what you mean though.  Honestly, I think these guys believe that anything that gets anyone into getting a fish, and they can get paid for it is probably what drives them to do these ads.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Yes,

And color and packaging, too.

Check out your local supermarket. The brands that pay the store the most are eye level.

Other brands are known by their packaging or name.

When I played sports in high school we all had to wear the same brand name gear.  If you didn't, we looked upon you as wierd.

Just ask Muddy - and mention Shimano!!!  ;D   ;D   ;D
