Wasn't sure where to post this. But is there anything I can hook on the end of my scale to hold the lip of the bass to weigh it? I don't like sliding that hook up under their gills. They clearly don't care for it much either.
Get yourself the Fish grip or Fish grip Junior. The fish grip has a slot to slide your scale's hook into.
i have fish grips jr. works awesome!
Either fish grips or Rapalas version. They're basically like vise grips for fish.
x4 fish grips!

You can get these "jaws" at hardware stores. They do pinch. If you are using the cheapy scales that I have recommended, then you need to fabricate a bigger hook. Then just carefully insert the hook in the last gill opening under the chin. Please do not poke another hole in the fish!

I don't puncher the fish to get a weight, but putting them on the scale using the hook under the gill seems to make them flip and fight, when holding them by the lip doesn't.
I haven't tried the Fish Grip for use with a scale yet. Gonna give it a try tomorrow when I go fishing

Since someone mentioned it, I figured I would comment. I agree with the statement of not puting another hole in the fish. However, have you guys seen how "pros" mark their fish in their livewells (saw it on bassmasters)? They drive a hook through the side of their mouth with color markers to help them cull. Kinda surprised this is ok, even if it doesn't increase mortality. Got to imagine it adds stress and difficulty to the fish under water with another hole in their mouth.
If I have a Rapala scale with the hook, how do I zero it out when adding the weight of the fish grip?
fish grip junior is definitely the way to go...

they were talking about this on Bassmaster live at the potomac. I believe it was Zona talking about how ridiculous it is the amount of technology in fishing yet they still use the metal clips from stringers back in the day. i've caught a couple fish that looked like their jaw was going to rot off from the culling clips being poked through them.

Yeah I don't remember which event it was (every weekend I usually look ahead and record whatever bass fishing shows I find on directv). It was an event kvd won. It was actually him who was doing this (is suspect this is normal behavior with all for culling fish). Not to mention seeing the "pros" lifting big bass by the lower jaw. Hate seeing that stuff.....anyway. sorry for getting off topic OP.

Rapala touch scale comes with both a hook and a clamp. I just use the clamp all the time. If you don't have the clamp and have to add one, simply add it before you turn the scale on as the scale is self zeroing upon activation and doesn't have a tare function.

Exactly what A-Jay posted...
One in action on a smaller pike, a little over 8 IIRC
Agreed with previous comments. For my ten cents, weigh a couple fish with the grip and without the first few times, or just zero the weight out so you get the exact weight. See how much the grips add to the weight of the fish. We are sticklers about weight and in fun competitions and family lake records, every ounce counts!
About how big is the Accu cull scale? I want to get one but want to make sure it'll fit in my tackle bag.

Totally off topic but, who can afford to smoke these days? Packs of cigs are like $5 bucks. I remember when I started smoking (kids don't try this at home) I could buy a carton of cigs for $15. Glad I quit before it got too expensive. I pity anybody who smokes these days. You are forced to pay high prices and treated like lepers by banning you from smoking in every building but your own home. Even outdoor stadiums have banned smoking. Talk about being a whipping boy.
Cigarettes are $10 in MA. I don't smoke but I still feel this is outrageous.

A-Jay, was that easy to "zero" with the added weight of the fish gripper

I would assume it would be zerod out if that's on when you start the scale up.
Always a good idea to carry a scale with you every time you go bass fishing, since it's better to know the real weight of your next PB than guess it.

This Accu-Cull scale does not have a "Tare" function which allows for the scale to be zeroed to compensate for the added weight. The SA3N ElectroSamson Portable Hanging Scales used on Major League Fishing does have this feature.
However, the Fish Grip Jr's very light molded plastic design is very light and it's weight must be close to the metal hook that it replaces on the scale because the scale still reads 00.00 - zero with the Fish Grip Jr. on it.
I have not weighed the grip Jr but would guess it may come in a 2 ounces or so.
side note ~ Accu-Cull is now offering the scale & grip combo

well ill be happy to add 2 ounces on my catches

With the scale still reading zero at the start - just like the hook it comes with - any difference seems negligible.

Thanks for the complement, I really appreciate it.
I wish had and could I could pass on some "secret" but I truly do not.
I use a Nikon Coolpix HD digital camera that is several years old and I usually try to fill the frame with the fish.
The one thing that always seems to really help me at least, is to catch Big Bass to photo .. .. ..
Doesn't happen nearly enough if you ask me, but when it does I hope to get a decent picture.
An alterative method of getting a decent picture is to capture a "Still shot" from a video. I think this bass pic is one of those.

Thanks!
I bought this scale yesterday. It includes a lip gripper and a tape measure is built in. Only the problem is it won't ship for 1-2 months, not really a big problem considering there will be ice here for another 2 months.

So how do you weight large fish properly?
I've read that it's bad to hold up larger bass by the mouth, without supporting their body. Puts too much pressure on their jaw. But guys I see weighing their big bass online seem to hook up these portable scales by using the hook through the grill, which the fish seem to hate, or by gripping the center lower mouth with the grips from the scale.

It's OK to hold them by their jaw, as long as they are hanging vertical. Just don't torque the jaw on big bass. There are several ways to weigh them, one is to attach some boga grips to the scale and then clip it on to the lower jaw, another is to attract a bag to the scale and place the fish in that, or yet another is to simply slide the scales hook under the gill plate through the gills, but not so that it's putting pressure on the gills themselves.

Thats actually the scale i have been looking at the most...
I don't know if I'd trust that spring clip. Dropping a fish is not good.
