I've only been Bass fishin for a few months now, ( I moved from the north where all I did was walleye fish ) I've finally figured out how to use a baitcasting reel, and have purchased some quality tackle, rods and reels. Now lately I've been practicing (cause I haven't caught a bass yet) deep diving crank baits, and have snapped off the crank bait several times while casting. I've been using Berkley Vanishing 12# flourocarbon. I have a Wright and Mcall 7' crankbait s-glass rod, with a revo 6.4 sxt (2 centrifuge tabs on) magnetic brake less than 1/4 of the dial, and the resistance knob set to let the bait fall rather quickly. But after several casts I have to chase after my 6XD . The line looks good except where its frayed once I retrived the lure. I've also had this happen while using a shakey head (love watching a 2 dollar hook fly away). So guys... what the heck am I doing to cause this???? and dont tell me I'm casting to hard please. :pray:

check your guides...run a qtip through them and see if any of the cotton gets stuck and if it does that could be the reason

Try another brand of line. Two suggestions are Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12 and Seaguar AbrazX.

I'm not exactly sure I understand fully what's going on here. Are you saying its breaking the line or comes untied? Is the reel freezing up mid cast and then it snaps when it runs out of slack? What kind of knot are you using to tie the lure/hook on? You didn't use any old line did you?

I always make 10 loops in each knot, pull the 'noose' tight and then another knot the same way. So two knots with 10 loops each.

Like I said though, I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Maybe its a reel issue (no pun intended). I agree with roadwarrior, sounds like some funky line. Normally you don't get coils in the line unless you realllly stretch it out by hand.

Get rid of the berkeley Vanish, it's junk. 12lb is a good choice but the berkeley isn't

Also you don't really need to post the street or zip where you live in the location

its not the knot coming untied, but line breakage about 10' up from a crankbait knot. and its always about the same spot. I at first thought about switching line brands, but the break is in the same spot. to be honest its only happened 5 or 6 times (yesterday 4 times) so I'm guessing its not the line. either its equipment malfunction or user malfunction. Just trying to eliminate possibilities with others experiences...

It could be that there is something wrong with your rod's guides. It also could be line I have had a lot of problems with Berkley vanish breaking so I switched to Seaguar and I have never had a problem.

Check guides as Derek suggested.

A few like Vanish, many hate it. I would definitely try another brand if you can't find any bad spot on the guides.

Only combination I have snapped lures off on is an old 9' Fenwick glass rod I bought about 45-50 years ago. It is for throwing live nightwalkers. Throwing small Beetle Spins on 4# mono could snap the lure right off. A 10# leader cured that problem.

I've never seen anyone whip a rod faster and harder than Tom. Never seen him snap a lure off........yet.

Could be technique, maybe a little herky-jerky, not smooth enough. Could be the rod, I've never been a fan of fiberglass crankbait rods, I think that they are too heavy. More than likely though, it is the line, try new line. I use 10 lb Trilene Armor Coated for throwing deep diving cranks. Good luck.

Your line is breaking at a weak point. The guides might be nicking the line, causing a weak point, and thats what it sounds like, especially because it's happening at the same place every time.

That's weird I've had lures come off on the cast but it was my fault faulty knot. I never had a weak point in my line and that happen

Make sure you are tying good knots. Also check your guides, and do away with that line. Iv had bad experiences with that line. Its AWEFUL.

I would suggest checking your guides or even the reel spool for nicks but you said berkley vanish so I am saying your line over anything first.

Only 6 times? Two is enough.

I had vanish do the same thing, after I ruled out the guides and reel I couldn't understand why the line kept snapping, well it was because the line is junk. There's a reason why people say its called vanish because that's what happens to your money when you use it.

This line will make more lures vanish than anything. Change your line out. More than likely you have kinks that are snapping when you're casting out...........and yes possibly you are casting too hard. A little finesse and fine tuning of the reel will get you the distance you need.

I'm one of the few people that haven't had any issues with Berkley Vanish. I used it for about 3 years and never had any issues with it breaking and I loved the Transition version. I've since switched to Sunline and Sufix, but I didn't have any issues with Berkley Vanish.

As to your problem....I agree with the majority of the replies here about checking the guides. If it's breaking off in the same place over and over, there has gotta be something either on the guides or the line guide on your reel. Something is nicking your line and the force generated by the cast combined with the weight of deep diving crankbaits is breaking it there. I know it's already been said, but I second the suggestion to take a q-tip and rub down all the guides and also where the line is coming out of your reel. If the q-tip snags on something, you've found your problem.

Are you hooking your lures to a hook keeper on your rod? If so, how tight are you cinching it down? If the break is always several feet up the line then maybe it's getting weak at the bend where it goes through the rod tip guide and back down.

When using fluorocarbon it's important to check the line for abrasions, as it is more brittle than mono. Simply untangling a backlash can leave you with weak spots in your line. If in doubt, cut it and re-tie (and of course, dispose of the line responsibly .) I recommend the San Diego jam knot for fluoro, though there are many knots that work well. A palomar knot is less than ideal, but should still perform decently.

I agree that you should check the guides with a cotton swab, and while you're at it check the line guide on the level wind mechanism on your reel with the swab too.

Follow 99% of everybody's advice and get rid of that line. It's the worst line I've ever used.

If you turn your rod when going back to cast you could be wrapping your line around the rod tip and snapping it when you cast without knowing it.

For new line get some Excalibur silver thread copolymer.

If it does show fibers replace that guide now....If the guides on the rod are ok then I would check the reels line carriage shock ring next. If ok there walk out about 30' of line and check for intermitant bad spots.

I thought it was the knot breaking but you said that it's about 10" from the knot. I don't know what knot you're using but it sounds to me like that area is where you grab the line to tighten down the knot. You might want to try and use a little less force when you tighten the knot down so you're not putting an unnecessary kink in it.

From other responses it sounds like that line isn't very good. Maybe it's gotten a little brittle?

Vanish doesn't have very good shock strength and most bass anglers are too heavy-handed to compensate for that trait. Give Berkley Sensation a try if you liked the Vanish.

I've fished the vanish too and didn't care for it but never had line snapping problems. Is it possible that since you are new to the baitcaster, that you are getting "loops" in the line like minor backlashes? Places where the line is not tight to the spool? That loop will be rubbed at high speed and can melt and break your line as you are casting. It happens to me when I'm in too much of a hurry to stop and fully pick out the backlash and only takes a couple casts before it will break.

That's a 1 ounce lure your tossing around with 12# fluoro.. I'd bet its a shock related breakage esp if you have a snappy cast to try to get that lure out there for a longer cast.

Else like others said, check all the guides.

If you like Fluoro I'd go with Seaguar Tatsu .. its been very durable for me..

Check the guides as others have said and don forget the line guide on your reel too! That's where mine was and I couldn't figure it out why it was fraying my line for the life of me haha. Also try changing your knot, that may be the problem also.
