Dobyn's Fury Rod broke, replace or get something better? 2024

Hi there,
went to my local water today and hooked into a nice 3.5 pounder. When I had the fish almost landed I tried to flip him to shore. During that process my Dobyns Fury rod broke at 3/4 of the length.
I liked the rod. It was fairly light and sensitive for the price (115 USD inlc tax). Now I am debating with myself if I should just pay the 50 USD plus shipping and get it replaced or spend that money on something better.
It is the Dobyns Fury Casting Rod 7' Med Hvy. I used it for Jigs, worms and smaller spinner baits.
If I invested in a new rod (for the same purposes) I would be looking for something that is even light, more sensitive and has a better warranty.

Maybe consider a MHF St. Croix Avid. Great rod for what you'd want to use it for and an awesome warranty to go with it. Think they go for about the same as the E6X.

Contact Dobyns.
I just had a champion 703sf break right below the 3rd eyelet from the tip. I took it to a local dealer to exchange in person ($70 no questions warranty), they didn't have any 703sf instock. Ended up paying the difference and upgraded to the extreme hp 703sf. Dobyns has one of the best if not the best customer service in the fishing industry.
I would upgrade that Fury series to a Sierra series 704c or 734c. Much better blank and components. Little lighter but alot more sensitive
Personally I prefer the Fury series for non bottom contact baits, Champion series for cranks/jerkbaits and Extreme series for bottom contact baits (jigs worms shakeyheads).

Call Dobyns and tell them your situation and ask them for trade up options with in the warranty. The new Sierra line is a marked improvement over the previous Savvy. Something to think about. I have had nothing but great service from Dobyns to date.

Here is where my head is at.
Lets say I pay 70 USD (50 USD + shipping) and I get an upgrade, the warranty is still the same, meaning that I had to pay 70 USD again if the rod broke.
So, why not pay a bit more and have a care-free warranty and a better rod on top of that.
Options:
1. G. Loomis E6X Casting Rod 7' Med Hvy 843C MBR
2. Avid Casting Rod 7' Med Hvy X Fast
3. Daiwa Zillion Worm/Jig Rod 7' Medium
4. Other options that you guys tell me

I do not think you understand something about the way the warranties work. All of the manufacturers have an initial warranty that covers rods if they have defects in them. So if you bought that Dobyns rod and it just broke in half almost right away (within the specified time) they would replace it free. After that or even during that if you broke it by slamming the car door on it, a bear ate half of it, they do not care how it breaks the replacement policy is for you to pay a specified amount based on the retail price. That cost, to you, covers their expense to make and supply you with another rod. Think of it this way if you buy a car and during the warranty period you maintain it correctly but the engine blows up at 10,000 miles, you expect their warranty will cover the repair. The factory will not pay for your engine to be repaired if you drove it with no oil in it. This is sorta the same. Dobyns Fury rods are good quality rods for an economical price. You can pay about half the price and get it replaced. Also check with a Dobyns dealer near you. Often you do not have to order it and ship it from the factory, the dealer may do it right in the store.
I have had two rods break in my lifetime. Both of them were G Loomis rods. I had to go to my local dealer and the store did the exchange. I do not blame G Loomis, they build quality rods, both times the rods broke because of something that happened while the rods were not in use but sitting on my boat's deck.
It sound like flipping the fish onto land caused it to break, perhaps it had been accidentally damaged by a quick hit on a boat deck or something else and today the graphite just let go under stress. If you liked the rod, its size, its action, and taper but would like a more sensitive rod then ask to pay the upgrade to a Sierra or Champion series. Get the same model rod in the higher end series. I did just that with one of my G Loomis's. I had a 6 foot SJR-721 IM6 that I loved. It broke, my fault not theirs, so I went to my local dealer and found the newer model. Unfortunately it had changed to an uplocking reel seat which i hated. I paid something like $50 for a replacement and $40 to upgrade to an IMX version. I am glad I did.
You say why not get a rod with a carefree warranty, the other rods will have the same type of warranty. Sorry. No free lunch.
By the way I have had several of the new Doyns Sierras in my hand, they are nice, so are the G Loomis E6 and the ST Croix, but do not expect any of the manufacturer's to give free rods away if a factory defect is not the cause of the breakage. If you believe the rod broke due to a manufacturer's defect, and you believe it is still under warranty you can call and make arrangement to ship it back in for inspection. I would not bother myself. Your choice of course

I will call them and see what they say. I think it was a defect of the rod. If they make me an offer to upgrade I will take it, otherwise I will look into:

I am not expecting a warranty to replace me a rod that I accidentally or purposely damaged. But I expect that warranty to give me a replacement of the rod (for now copay, as the Dobyns asks for).

If I could work out the upgrade I would go for either a Sierra SA703C or SA704C your choice. If I wanted to go a different direction I would go with a Avid AVC70MHF or a Avid X AXC70MHF which is closer to a SA 704C. Personally I like a split grip so it would be the Avid X for me. I had a chance to handle an E6 rod, several in fact, and for me I do not like the long full cork handle or the blank. G Loomis has made some of the best spinning rods I have ever handled. My wife and I own 7 total of them. I do not like many of the changes that have been made to them since the merger with Shimano. If you remember the cork and aluminum reel seats they used forever, well they have cheapened them so much they now have all plastic ones. The IMX rod I mentioned had their new plastic reel seat. The hood and lock rings were plastic also. Right from the beginning they would back off and I was afraid I would break them if I had to constantly tighten them. Finally I took my brand new $250 rod to a friend that custom builds rods. We decided to remove the entire cork handle, their plastic reel seat and the foregrip. All of that was replaced by an American Tackle Comfort reel seat and a Winn Grip split grip assembly. None of my G Loomis rods have ever felt that good before. I liked it so much I had my SJR 722 done the same way. In fact it still had my prefered stock metal reel seat. Now both are done as a split grip setup. Here is a before and after pic. So anyway I think G Loomis still builds nice blanks but I am not real keen on the rest of the components.

I am biased I admit. I consider the $100 to $250 range the most competitive rod market today, I believe that just a few years ago people like G Loomis stood out far ahead. I do not think they stopped building great rods I think companies like Dobyns, Powell, Irod and others offer very competitive rods ,maybe they caught up. Again I admit bias, but I really like Irods, Dobyns, Powell rods and certain St Croix. In the sub $250 category. I really like the Dobyns Sierra series, but I also think you should try to put an Irod Genesis II model IRG704C or IRG744C in your hand. These rod are light, very sensitive and feel good in my hand. They retail for $150. I also fish a Powell Max 683 CEF. It is the most versatile rod I own. I love both of my Powell rods, but they are the older model. I have not had the opportunity to test out a new Max3D. On this board several people have complained about a Max3D series rod breaking just like yours did. Again I do not know the real cause of their failures, but if I was spending my own cash based on my current stock I would order another one from them. Financially I can not afford rods like a NRX or St Croix top of the line rods, but I do carry 16 good quality rods in my rod box and my Dobyns, Powels, Irods and multiple G Loomis GL3 and IMX rods are in the group and I enjoy fishing them. Dobyns makes fine rods as mostly what I fish. I have a few Lew's Custom Lites. I broke one by backing my truck to far down the ramp and it Jamed into the tail gate, broke 3" off the tip. I inquired with Lew's customer service and told them the true story and with no questions asked, they had me to cut the model number section out of rod and mail it and a $20 check. Three weeks later had a new rod. So, if I where you call Dobyns and tell them what happened.

You tried to use the rod to "flip" the fish on shore when it was almost landed? That doesn't sound like a rod defect to me, sounds like a landing defect causing the rod to break

If you like the rod, replace it.
I'd recommend a different landing method though. Perhaps a net.
Otherwise there may be further "warranty" replacements needed.

Every rod company will deem your carelessness of "flipping a 3.5# fish up onto the shore" as user error and neglect. It wasn't the rods fault or a defect that caused it to break. It was yours. The only warranty that used to exist that met your standards was Shimanos. That has now turned into a normal warranty because of people taking advantage of it for doing such things as, for example, shore flipping large fish.
Both the E6X and Avid will be large improvements over your current Fury. Having actually used the Sierra, it isn't a great improvement over the previous Savvy let alone the Fury. Component's are a little nicer but the blank behaves and feels similarly.
Both Dobyns and St. Croix have among the best customer service in the rod industry.

So, I have decided to upgrade either G.Loomis or the St. Croix.
Recommendations?
I would be using it with a Lew's Speed Spool 7.1:1.
I hope to build a very light and sensitive 'Jig-Worm-Light Spinnerbiat' Rod.

First I would put an Irod Genesis II IRG704C or an IRG744C in my hand. If I wanted to go to a ST Croix I would go for an Avid X AXC70MHF, It is pretty close in spec to your Dobyns. It is a split gripped cork handle rod. If you feel you want to go back to a full cork handle the an Avid would be your series.

Dobyn's has one of the best warranties out there. I've yet to try the new Sierras. Before, I wouldn't recommend upgrading to a Savvy, but if the Sierras are like people say, it'd be a good deal to move up. I come off as a rod snob here, but the furys and savvys were about the same level of not sensitive (haha). However, they make great moving bait rods, as they are light and balanced.

I have the E6X MBR843c (paired with a curado 200i PG) and really like the rod. its a great taper. I have not fished with a Dobyns though.

The comparable warranty offered by g.Loomis is more expensive than that of Dobyns and you don't have the luxury of taking it to your local dealer and getting your rod replaced.

I'd take a better look into the warranties offered from each manufacturer and you will clearly see Dobyns offers one of the most reasonable no questions asked warranty program.

So here are the models that I am considering.
What do you guys think? I am not sure if I should go for a MH or a M, Fast tip or extra fast tip.

Just from the specs and the warranty wise, I am tending to the St. Croix right now.
I really want to tread myself for a hard time at work in the last months and therefor would like to get a really sensitive and light quality Jig-Worm rod (that I would also use for Spinnerbaits and Jerkbaits).

I actually held the E6X and Avid back to back at my local Cabela's on Friday. The blank on the E6X is incredible. The taper is d**n near perfect and the weight + balance is phenomenal. With that said, the comfort of the full cork Avid is unmatched. You can't go wrong with either, but I would opt for the Avid because of St. Croix's exceptional customer service.

I am also planning to order the creme-de la creme rod to compare and see what more I would get for a 400 USD rod.
Any recommendation on what that reference rod could be?

ok, how do you like the handle on the st Croix? its a weird composite handle. no cork at all. at least they used to be. I didn't care for it in store, never fished with one though. I have only fished with a legend elite. not the extreme.

I kinda hope that I am not falling in love with a 400 USD rod. I would feel really bad to
1) spend that crazy kind of money on a single rod
2) would be super afraid to use the rod for my fishing (since I am for 99% a bankfisherman walking around and going through the woods)

So, a little update:
I received the rods today and tested them a bit in my living room.
In order to evaluate their sensitivity (feeling a slight bite on a Jig/Worm) I put my cellphone on the ground, put it on vibration and tapped with a jig on it.
Result:
Honestly I did not feel big of a difference between the 410 USD St.Croix Legend Extreme and the other rods.
Which is good and bad, since that does not really tell me if it is me (my cave hands are not sensitive enough), the test procedure, etc.
Also as it is once you have the rods in your hands, I am playing now with the idea to keep 2 of them (not the Legend Extrem, that one is going back (had also lots of scratches on it).

Interesting test but since you didn't feel either I'd say the test is invalid. A broom stick will feel the same. Come up with a test that you can actually tell one from the other. Just my 2 cents...

Unfortunately I do not. I have never tried to compare the sensetivity of one rod against another. I would love to hear an answer tho. We go on and on about the sensitivity of rods but no one has a way to measure it??

EXACTLY!
In regards to the rods:
I am keeping the G.Loomis. It is light and I can throw very light baits with it. Also it is made in US and has a good warranty.
In regards to the other rod that I want to keep for bigger Jigs, swimbaits and spinner baits:
Daiwa:
+ Looks pretty cool
+ Seems a bit more sturdy
+ a little bit thinner diameter
+ more sturdy real seat
- 19 USD more
- Made in China
- The surface material of the rod feel like sandpaper (might be a dirt catcher)
St. Croix:
+ Better warranty
+ Made in US
+ Micro Guides (for more precise casts)
- Feels less sturdy than the Daiwa for some reasons
- Optically just average
Anyone experience with one or both of theese rods?
What would you choose and why?
