New boat now new problems 2024

fishing user avatarlilbuddy reply :

I will try and make this short......

So I've been looking for a new "used" boat for a couple of months now and finally yesterday I brought one home. Its a 2010 Triton TR19 Pro.

Now that all being said I should be super happy....well now I have a major problem.

My old boat which was a single axle trailer. I could back it up to the garage, get it half way in and then do the rest by hand and get it into place.

Now I have a tandem axle trailer...and of course a much bigger boat. The boat barley fits in my garage and I was able to get it in yesterday when I got home but it took two grown men to get it done. So the big issue is how to swing a boat around with a tandem trailer?

At this point I feel like I made a huge mistake by buying this boat. I dont think I can move the boat around on my own like I could with my last one.....I'll need to be able to hook up at 4am and head to club tournaments...not sure what to do.

Here are some pics...

One in the sellers garage and the rest are how it's stored in my garage.

Please give me some ideas how I can move this boat on my own.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I have a tandem, and yeah, brute force.  Even if you have one of those trailer dollies, it's hard to swing it.  You can lay a flattened cardboard box under the tires can help.  The only other thing would be to put a hitch on a riding lawn tractor, to give you some power to move it.  That's pretty much what I settled on, since my oldest son has a few trailers, plus my two boats.

fishing user avatarJ._Bricker reply :

Congratulations on the new boat lilbuddy, it's a good looking ride. There are two ways I am aware of to solve this problem. A friend of mine has a 20ft boat and the same unique situation. He places teflon cutting boards on the garage floor behind the trailer tires, unhitches the trailer, then manually backs the boat up so the tires rest on the cutting boards. Since there is little friction due to using the teflon boards, he can spin the boat sideways as needed.

'The other option is a "vehicle positioning wheel dolly" which is how car dealerships move vehicles in their showrooms. Harbor Freight has them for $89.99.

Hope this is helpful. JB

fishing user avatarlilbuddy reply :

Thanks JB and Francho...

@JB I did see the trailer dolly at harbor freight.....I was wondering if that would work...the reviews I read it looked like it was for a light trailer ...this boat is far from light...

I can try the card board box idea Francho had and the cutting boards.

I go this rig for a great price and hate to get rid of it. I can if I have to and not lose any money. NADA is just under 28k and this one has hds 8 2nd gen in console, hds 5 at bow and in the pic you can see one pp....I got it for 23k....the point in me telling you this is that if I HAD to get rid of it I dont think I would lose money.

It drives like a champ...I drove it last sunday on the lake and even fished out of it. The seller was super nice guy...He has a new triton coming in so he had to get rid of this one. I got lucky and basically got it for his payoff.

fishing user avatarJ._Bricker reply :

lilbuddy, I glad you took a look at them because I wanted to give you an idea of what that opinion looked like. I'm sure they are rated differently regarding weight, and two of them is the expensive option. Teflon boards or cutting sheets are impervious to water and as my friend likes to remind me, were $3.00 bucks each. Look forward to hearing how this works out for you and what you decided, JB

I did a google search and I dont really see teflon cutting boards..I saw something on amazon but they were like $30 each...are you talking about the thin sheets? I think you can use them for cookie sheets as well?

fishing user avatarJ._Bricker reply :

Sorry, it's been a while since I had to buy a new cutting board, lol. I figured they'd be about half that. I gonna guess he uses the cookie sheets cause he knows they cost 3 bucks!

fishing user avatarboostr reply :

Don't get the dolly from Harbor Freight. I have it, and it is at it's max capacity pushing my 17.5 ft Stratos on a single axle trailer around.

I would spend the money and get 2 of those wheel dollies.

fishing user avatarBassB8Caster reply :

No one makes a little electric motored front back wheel? Seems like it would be a good seller. Maybe someone needs to invent one (I'm good with just 10% equity ; )

fishing user avatarlilbuddy reply :

After talking to my wife and the logistics of it all Im just going to sell it. I should be able to get what I paid.

I felt I couldnt pass up the deal but now Im having major buyers remorse and I just need it gone. This was supposed to be fun but its turned into a huge problem now.

Thanks for the advice and tips...best advice I had recently was when my wife said "this boat is too big and more than you need"....like most stubborn guys I ignored that advice. :-(

Lilbuddy, Sorry to hear about the new direction you've decided to go with this situation. If I may suggest, maybe try a couple of the aforementioned solutions before letting the boat go, I would hope the Mrs wouldn't begrudge you the opportunity. Good luck with your decision and good fishing, JB

fishing user avatarmoguy1973 reply :

For $40 more than the Harbor Freight ones (which I've heard don't have bearings in the castor wheels and bind under weight) you can get some better ones and a set of 4, one for each wheel.

Powered trailer dollies are nice.....but a little expensive.

I would try 'teflon' idea....maybe those white plastic cutting boards you can get a Wal-Mart cheaply.

I would try some things and not be too quick to get rid of the boat.

This is just one guy's opinion...but no way I'd let that boat go this fast.  It's a great rig and you haven't spent much time looking for a solution to the problem.

Take a deep breath, step back from the edge and evaluate some of the solutions you've been presented with.

fishing user avatarfrosty reply :

Sorry, I'd add 3' onto the back of my garage before I let that one go! It would be a lot of work but pulling the front axle tires off would eliminate the problem with the tandems.

I wouldn't suggest that.  Some if not most trailers have a "rocker" mechanism between the front and rear axle that distributes the load equally between the two axles.  When the front wheel encounters a bump, the rocker exerts a downward pressure on the rear axle.  If it encounters a depression (pot hole), the rocker exerts a lifting force on the rear axle.

Remove a wheel, and that axle will drop to the ground.  If the axles do not have a rocker system, removing the wheels from one axle will cut the load capacity of the trailer in half, compromising safety.

I meant just to move it around for parking it, not driving down the road without them  I know it was silly, but I'd have a hard time selling that boat because of an issue with parking that can be solved.

My boat doesn't fit in the garage which I thought it would.  I parked it in the driveway, and got a good cover for it. I'll eventually build a carport or get one of those temporary garages.

I added a 2nd garage door on the back garage wall....opens into the backyard where I put a carport. Best thing I have done for my boat.

the carport has since had the 2nd side completed.

Looks great. To bad I can't do that, my boat would be parked in my neighbor's yard. I am thinking about building an extended car port attached to the front of my garage though. A place to put the boat and a place to work under if the weather is bad..

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Buy a single axial trailer for your boat and sell the double axial to the dealer. You don't need a double axial trailer unless you plan to travel 1,000's of miles cross country each year.

Tom

fishing user avatarFurther North reply :

That pass through is a pretty slick set-up!

I would have done the same (our "boat garage" is a detached 24 x 36 building) but to do that I would have had to cut down a bunch of trees.  Not worth it for the ability to pull through...and I would have lost a bunch of shelf storage.

fishing user avatarBamabassfan reply :

I am looking for a new boat and have a similar problem.  Found this should work perfectly for you and for a few hundred bucks. .https://www.trailervalet.com/shop/trailer-valet-trailer-dolly/

fishing user avatarLures'n'Liberty reply :

Trailer Dollies - Don't use them on even the slightest grade. Without brakes, your trailer can easily take off and run you over before rolling over the hill and getting all busted up. Don't ask how I know that.

Traysliding - google it. As a teenager, we used to put fast food trays under the back tires of a front wheel drive car, lock the e-brake, and slide it around all over. I'd imagine these trays would work just as well as the cutting boards mentioned throughout the thread, if not better, at a significantly lower cost.

Single Axle Conversion - This could be a big deal or it could be as simple as changing springs, depending on your trailer manufacturer. A little research could find you a leaf spring that bolts up from the front shackle to the rear, bypassing the center 2. If the trailer has brakes on one axle, you could probably re use it if it's rated to hold your boat. If I were in your predicament, I'd be comparing part numbers and diagrams of your trailer manufacturer's single axle model with the same weight capacity to see if this can be done with off the shelf parts or contacting the nearest authorized repair facility for your particular make of trailer before selling the boat.

I couldn't deal with that. I don't have a HOA where I live, but residents are still fought by the city on a lot of things like this. Last year I went through a huge ordeal when someone complained about my chickens and am really wondering what they'll do if they ever find out that the neatly landscaped little pond I have in my back yard serves double duty as a place to store live catfish bait!! My girlfriend thought she was getting Koi, she was a little surprised when I came home and threw in a bucket of bluegill.

Great boat at a great price, it is really too bad you can't hang on to it...but I absolutely get that it doesn't fit your life right now.

I've slotted myself into a place where I've got an eighteen and a half foot, 8 foot wide, aluminum hulled boat that has the multi-species hull of a regular Crestliner, but has the layout of a bass boat (big decks front and back, tons of storage below deck).

I don't need...or want...a 20 ft. boat with a huge motor that goes 70 MPH.  Those boats are a blast...a lot of fun...but not something I feel like would enhance my life at all.

There is more than one option out there for you that is similar, and will fit your life better, have fun finding it!

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

How do you winch the trailer out without anchoring a pulley in the middle of the garage?

The power Trailer Valet posted would be a good option and as I mentioned a single axial trailer. I owned several 29-19.5 bass boats with 200+hp engines on single axial trailers with no issues becuase I always have garage my boats.

fishing user avatarLures'n'Liberty reply :

Seeing the winch discussion (and not being sure what you drive), I'll ad an idea. You could also attach a pulley to the wall and mount a winch to your truck. They make a not so intrusive looking receiver hitch mounts front and rear or multi vehicle applications worth checking out as well.

TBH, I haven't figured out how to winch it out, so I kind of have to muscle it out.  It has taken me as little as 2 mins and as much as 5 or 6 mins to get the trailer out of the garage.  I've never used a pulley before, so this never even occurred to me until now.  Since my winch is mounted on the front of the left side of the garage, where would I want to install the pulley? Thank you for suggesting this btw, I'm over getting sweaty when taking it out of the garage.

This is an awesome idea.  I bought the AC powered winch to plug up in the garage, but if I had to do it all over again I'd get the DC one and mount it on the front of the truck instead.  To the OP, consider this method instead of mine bc this method will get you both in and out of the garage, and you'd have the winch available to use anywhere your truck is.

You may have answered your own question... (mount the pulley to a chain or yank strap and hook it to the truck, If you were extra creative and put a hook in the right place on the back of your tow rig, you could winch it right on the ball)

I was gonna mount a rod holder on my wall at an angle like 45° to the floor.  And that would allow storage.  But I have several large rods 2 14' surf cast rods and a 12' fly rod.

HOA where The OP lives prevents parking boats outside, must be inside the garage for storage. Hooking up the night before works if the OP can park his rig in front of his home, neighbors get upset getting near thier driveways.

Agree some excellent power chain drive trailer dollies have been suggested.

Rod storage is a seperate issue. My longer salt water rods are stored horizontal in sleeves on a closet type metal wire vinyl coated wall rack in my garage, holds about 15 rods without the reels.

And this is why I dont care how cheap a house is, I WILL NEVER LIVE IN AN HOA.  Too many Chiefs not enough indians.  And I always thought it funny how a group of other home owners can tell you HOW TO OWN YOUR PROPERTY.

The HOA are there for the to protect the values of the property. Most of us will never buy anything else as expensive as a home. I want to make sure when I go to sell that I can get as much as I can. If my neighbors don't take care of their homes it effects my property value the same way that if I don't keep my property up, the value of my home and my neighbors goes down. It can be a pain sometimes but I put a high value on what they do. I have a lot of money invested and I want to protect that investment.

I use my flathead rigs way too often to pull the reels every time I come home, storing them broken down isn't gonna cut it. I've got my 3, my girlfriend's 3, a fly rod and a noodle rod. The backup 10' rod is telescopic and works double duty as my broom handle, so it's pretty much always strapped to my backpack regardless of what tackle is inside. I know I'm WAY off topic and apologize to the OP and the mods, as it seems i go here pretty often, but here's an interesting situation. My garage is a 1 1/2 car and I use it often to repair a fleet of crappy vehicles and other things with small engines. I'm looking to build a big cabinet that will hang vertically, hold all my gear (roughly 25 combos at present with more to come I'm sure) that will keep it all safe from paint overspray and fold down into a handy little fishing work bench. Should be an interesting project, as I have recently scored a decent couch and loveseat for the garage man cave conversion, along with an HD TV projector and power 144" screen, a kick ass stereo, and a brandy spankin' new welder.

And this is why I dont care how cheap a house is, I WILL NEVER LIVE IN AN HOA.  Too many Chiefs not enough indians.  And I always thought it funny how a group of other home owners can tell you HOW TO OWN YOUR PROPERTY.

I agree, that is why I live in the middle of no where, and own all the land around me . My nearest neighbor is a half mile away

I also enjoy living in the middle of nowhere. Surrounded by summer homes and the home values around me dont really effect mine because of the uniqueness of my home its sure to maintain property value.

Don't laugh until you try it -put down some oil-dry or cat litter

Makes it a whole lot easier to pivot!
